To My Child

Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and laugh when I feel like crying.

Just for this morning, I will let you choose what you want to wear, and smile and say how perfect it is.

Just for this morning, I am going to step over the laundry, and pick you up and take you to the park to play.

Just for this morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink, and let you teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together.

Just for this afternoon, I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off, and sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles.

Just for this afternoon, I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and whine for the ice cream truck, and I will buy you one if he comes by.

Just for this afternoon, I won't worry about what you are going to be when you grow up, or second guess every decision I have made where you are concerned.

Just for this afternoon, I will let you help me bake cookies, and I won't stand over you trying to fix them.

Just for this afternoon, I will take us to McDonald's and buy us both a Happy Meal so you can have both toys.

Just for this evening, I will hold you in my arms and tell you a story about how you were born and how much I love you.

Just for this evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get angry.

Just for this evening, I will let you stay up late while we sit on the porch and count all the stars.

Just for this evening, I will snuggle beside you for hours, and miss my favorite TV shows.

Just for this evening when I run my finger through your hair as you pray, I will simply be grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given.

I will think about the mothers and fathers who are searching for their missing children, the mothers and fathers who are visiting their children's graves instead of their bedrooms, and mothers and fathers who are in hospital rooms watching their children suffer senselessly, and screaming inside that they can't handle it anymore.

And when I kiss you good night I will hold you a little tighter, a little longer. It is then, that I will thank God for you, and ask him for nothing, except one more day.............

Samantha was thinking of you the other day as we were in Cincinnati on a fun visit at the hospital for a Christmas breakfast and did not have to see any doctors, at least not for work. It's hard coming up with different ways to say "I'm praying" when I sign guestbooks. Know that I am praying so for you! But what's more important is what this passage says. It's my very favorite passage. It says that the Holy Spirit Himself is praying for you! Oh what comfort these verses bring!

Hello Family. I hear everything is going well. (And I hear that big sis, Jess, is now 19!! Wow, that's ancient! ;-) I hope that you had a great time. I heard that Grandma made a cake. (And she wouldn't save me a piece either. :-(

Hi McKee family,

I've seen your entry on other people's sites and thought I would check in on Erin. How wonderful to know that things are going so well for all of you!

We too are very grateful for a good and gracious Lord who moved a mother to donate umbilical cord stem cells! Our son had a transplant in February 2005 for leukemia and has done incredibly well. We got to go home to Wisconsin on May 13th, so our paths never did cross at the RMH or the hospital.

We LOVE to hear about success stories and want you to know that there is a family in Wisconsin who is cheering you on and praying for lots and lots of sunny days ahead for you!

Hi Family. It was great to hear about your trip. It has been such a long time since I've been to Gatlinburg. A round of putt-putt sounds great. Good to hear that no one wrapped their putter around a tree (or windmill or large clown head with a gaping mouth or camel straddling a waterfall, etc.)

The weather in Germany is slightly better this morning. There are patches of blue sky visible, but they are still forecasting some snow. And it is cold!! My blood has thinned after living in Florida for almost 13 years. I am looking forward to flying back on Sunday.

Hi Family. Wow, what a treat! I made the news!! I feel like big stuff now. :-) Really though, I had a great time seeing everyone. Although I can kick myself for not finding an excuse to stop and see Jess as I passed through Wilmington on my way to Ohio State.

Wow! Uncle Kelly hit it right on the button. We always seem to think that our problems are the worst but there are so many people who are going through the same problems and disappointments and some people who have it worse than ours. I miss you all so much and wish we had met under different circumstances. Jared is still on his immune suppressants so no visits to the mall to see Santa. But that's ok because we visit the "Jimmy Fund" clinic in Boston once a week and last week we saw Tim Wakefield, a pitcher for the Red Sox. I guess being in the clinic once a week isn't so bad. I know that our wishes are the same and that is to have life back to normal. Erin looks so beautiful and I'm sure Katie is getting lots of calls from the boys at school. They are both great kids. Hello Family. I know that your Christmas this year didn't all go according to plan. You are not where you want to be at the moment. (And not where you should be.) You are away from home. (Far from home.) You don't have all the comforts that home usually provides. (Even with the Cartoon Network playing.) And you are surrounded by people that you may not know. (Some stranger than others.)

But it brings to mind a story of a baby I know. Actually born in a barn, not even a home or hospital. A pitiful place, really. The family was far from home, even so far that relatives or friends that they knew couldn't be there to help, or even stop in to say hello, or give a hug.

But both of you have something more in common. Both of you have a God in heaven that says, "Peace". "Peace on Earth, Good Will towards Men". God has never lost sight of that baby in the manger, and He has not and never will lose sight of Erin McKee and her family. God says, PEACE.

Jesus was only in that manger for one Christmas. He never was in there for his next one. And that is my prayer tonight, that although you may have had to go into the hospital today, next Christmas will be so much different. So much better. And no hospital.

Today we might find ourselves in unfamiliar surroundings, far from home, among strangers. But there is coming a day when all that is finished...

God bless you all, Kevin, Barb, Erin, Katie and Jess. Merry Christmas to you all. After all, Christ is the reason for the season.

Thrilled to read about Erin's clinci visit, and her appetite improving. I started to cry when I read about the bicycle ride on the walking path, what a picture that must have been Barb. (I can only imagine how hard it will be to return to work, but maybe look at this as being another huge step to things getting back to the way they were). Way to go Katie, how exciting eh!! Hope everybody enjoys the parade, and good luck to the team. This weekend is our Applefest weekend. Our town host this huge festival every year and tons of people come. There is lots of good stuff to eat (mostly apple themed), hayrides, face painting,arts and crafts, petting zoo, midway rides, huge parade (Katie can you come??), big beef barbecue, and the best candy apples ever. Erin does any of this make you hungry? We have one of our sons coming home, usually they both try to get back for this weekend, but Joey is in Yellowknife, NWT, which is too far away. Hello :) Just read journal, checking in and wanted to say hey! I wonder if eating 3 bigger more fattening meals a day would help rather than several small. Hmmm not sure but I have been told that eating small meals or healthy snacks all day long like every 2 hours, helps you lose weight (speeds up metabolism) but rather eating bigger meals stretched out for hours makes your body think it's starving and then it stores it? Eating dinner and then again before bedtime, yeah that will help gain. haha. All written very light hearted, hope and pray for healthy weight gain. Blessings and peace fall upon you and your home.

Hi McKees and Belatedly Welcome Home! Was so happy to log on and find that you're here in Bethel, in your own home, with your own dogs, yard, rooms, etc. God is so wonderfully good; He pours out his love without regard to how much He's already given!! Erin's checkup news is a great tonic as she's obviously moving in the right direction -- upwards. Glad Cincy is keeping close tabs on the EB virus; every health facility works a little differently but it's good to know they share the same concern as Minneapolis in wanting the best care for Erin. Looking forward to hearing that she's resumed her school work too as she'll feel more a part of "normal" life once again. My prayers continue for all of you that God will let each of you know in a special way just how much you are loved.

Greetings! Well, I guess this is it. You are heading home and not a moment too soon either. I am so proud of you Erin for going through everything you did like a "BIG" trooper. I would start packing also! We are looking forward to you being home again as a "complete" family. My heart aches that you were not able to see Katie off to school today. The best part is that Gil & Joyce have a joyful, memorable experience with Katie. I am sure they were flooded with memories of Kevin, Kelly & Chris first days of school.

Ryan started kindergarten today. In the last few weeks he has said he was NOT going to school. We went to open house on Monday and he wanted to make sure we were not staying. At least ten times he said "can we leave yet". But today he was ready. It was chilly this morning and he said "where is that bus, it's cold out here". When he got on the bus, he looked out the window at us. We couldn't see his mouth, just his eyes and his eyes were smiling. He was on the wrong bus home but he got home safely. Almost an hour after school was out. His only complaint of school was the recess wasn't long enough. LOL

Jessica started classes on Monday. She said she has a lot of work. It's wonderful to talk to her and and hear the excitement in her voice. She purchased her athletic training shirt today. She is coming home on Friday! Yeah . . . I miss her.

Hope this week goes as well as you are hoping and you get your release date! Your Grandma Hafer gave her regular update at church this week and we are all praying for you everyday and praising God for getting to witness your miraculous journey. It is good to hear that Jessica's first day of college went so well. I am hoping to get to go see her cheer at a game this fall. Maybe I'll even see you there! I have been busy getting my daughter off to school as well. My Cassie had her first day too and enjoyed her classes as well. It was a tough weekend of home sickness for my Cassie though - that can really pull at a mom's heart strings. Sometimes I really struggle with what God is trying to teach me in situations. I want to listen to Him but it's really hard to be sure you are interpretting His message correctly sometimes - especially when you are seeing your child suffer. I can only imagine how hard it was for you to listen as He guided you to Minneapolis. Your Faith & Journey provide strength for me as I am faced with my (very minor in comparison)challenges. We are glad to hear that things are improving daily for Erin and that she will hopefully be home soon. Barb you are right just coming home will make a big difference. As far as eating, it will come back on its own. I know how difficult it is to go without food for a long period of time and then trying to eat again. It's like you put the food in your mouth, but you are like a baby you don't know what to do with it. I know God is looking out for Erin and we have been praying for her regularly. I hope Katie's flight is good. She has more nerve than I because I have never flown in my life and wouldn't even think about doing it alone. Ashton is returning to college tomorrow and so we are experiencing the same feelings that you are with Jess. We sure are going to miss her. I have finished all my treatments and plan on returning to work part time next week. I am not sure how that will go as I experience some bone pain and fatigue daily, but God will provide. Please pray for me also as I return in a couple of weeks for another Catscan. We are praying that everything will look good. Like Erin, my blood counts are in the normal range and other blood work shows no cancer. Erin, hang in there you will be home soon in your own bed. What a difference that can make. Keeping you in our prayers, knowing that God will provide.

Hi Family. Sorry that I haven't written in a while, but I have been pulled in every direction between work, church and building the house. I still read your journal everyday, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think that my days are as exciting as yours are. Seeing Erin grow into a beautiful young lady, preparing to be baptized, and gaining her strength -- there isn't anything that I can say that would compare.

Tessa, Christa and Kenna are all back to school, and everything is going great this year. Christa is super busy, and Kenna is... well, she's still Kenna. ;-) She is going non-stop as usual. (She is the energizer bunny in the family.)

Oh, and I forgot to tell you about all the fish I caught when I went deep-sea fishing with our church mens group. Well, maybe I didn't. ;-o Actually everything that I caught was too small and had to throw back. But several in our group caught sharks and sea bass. One guy caught a beautiful 19 inch long red snapper, but had to throw it back because 20 inch is the minimum. (He wasn't happy, but he didn't lose his Christianity. ;-)

I hope that you have a super weekend. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am looking forward to that journal entry that says, "Going Home!"

Hey guys!!! I know how it feels to not have the internet. I turned in my computer to the school to get set up so I can get online in my dorm but I havent got it back yet. I came home tonight to go to Brett's football game. I will be heading back tonight though for practice at 10 in the morning. Last night was the first night with people in our hallway. It was a real experience. Random people just walking in my room, people screaming... I was pretty tired this morning. I took a nap as soon as I got home though so I feel better.

Greetings! SOOOOO glad to hear you are bouncing back yet again. You go girl!! I just want to add that everyone should not forget all the other children and their parents that are in need of speicial prayers tonight. It is so hard to understand what the families are truley going through unless you lived it yourself. Erin & Jessica are so much alike. Jessica would pass up cakes, cookies, etc. for fruit also. Although on occasion Jessica does enjoy marshmallow/cream cheese fruit dip with her fruit. Jessica also enjoys fruit smoothies. She received a smoothie maker last Christmas. Maybe Erin would like a smoothie?

Jessica came home last night. It was wonderful to have her! It's very comforting knowing she was sleeping in A/C in her own bed! She left early this morning. Her room mate Liz is moving in today and Liz is bringing the TV. College life will be much better.

Ryan had an x-ray of his sinuses this week and he has an infection. He was on antibiotics for his sinus while Jessica had strep throat (about 2 weeks ago). So now he will be on an antibiotic for 21 days. Hopefully this will take care of it. Ryan starts kindergarten on the 24th. He is not excited about it. Wow one child in college and one in kindergarten!

I pray the bone aspiration goes well and you are on your way home soon.

Sorry to hear Erin is struggling with having an appetite. The medicine is probably contributing. Grandma McKee will be able to get her to eat her strawberry cake when she is home! Ohh the comforts of home.

Jessica is moved into her dorm room. The building is very old with no A/C. The fleece blanket Jessica made and the valance that I made really brighten the dorm. She will enjoy College life much better when cheer camp (10 am - 7:45 PM each day) is over tomorrow, her roommate Liz moves in this weekend and the temperatures drop.

We really miss her! It actually hurts. I am glad she is only an hour away!

Dear McKees - How wonderful and humbling is the faith of a child. What a perfect way to celebrate her "homecoming," by planning a birthday baptism -- an outward sign of an inner work of grace and how "new" her life is now with a bright future ahead of her. I have been praying for you all. I know that it isn't easy staying longer, but I think you said it before, God is still watching over you. This whole episode led to the discovery of this EBV. And because you placed it in God's hands, He changed a cold into something good. And this EBV will be taken care of and will never become an issue. Awesome!

The weather here in Florida is hot and humid. (That means normal for summer weather.) We are planning to close on our house on August 30th (Christa's birthday). They are installing our carpeting now, and the back patio is being poured. Things are moving, but not yet finished. We will move from the apartment (that we thought we would only be in for a few months, not a year) on Saturday September 3rd (Tessa's birthday). We are so looking forward to getting out of that apartment.

Sorry that you all had such a hard . . . terrifing week. Thank God that Erin was diagnosed early. As an adult it would be so hard to experience what she has at eight! What a strong child! I am sure that Erin is feeding off of her parents strength and faith. We all are.

As far as Jessica . . . I can not believe that she is moving into her dorm on Saturday. I have shed a few tears this week. My Mom and I were talking and as hard as it will be for us to not have her at home it will be much harder for Jessica to be away from her family and of course Brett and the challenges of college life. I believe she is excited about this new journey.

I just returned from a 2 1/2 week visit to Bethel/Cincinnati and as far as the weather is concerned, you have not been missing a thing!!! As I'm sure your families have been keeping you up-to-date, the weather was in the high 90's, 65% humidity making it a heat index of 110 degrees! Living so close to the beach her in LA I'm certainly not used to that kind of heat!

Dear McKees - What a gamut of emotions you've run today from believing the fever is under control to learning that Erin has an infection which left untreated could cause a whole host of problems. Fortunately there is something that can be used to fight the EBV infection, and you're in the right place for treatment as the BMT staff are very experienced in dealing with the unexpected. I know that it isn't the best to return to the hospital, but I see this as an opportunity to take Erin's new blood cells out on the test track. Under doctor's scrutiny, Erin has her first cold after her re-birthday. It is amazing to think that her system is going through some of these things for the first time (as far as her blood marrow goes). And if she is going to have a cold, it is God's grace that you all have one of the best medical centers in the world there to take her temperature. :-)

Hi Family. I'm praying Erin's prayer tonight that the fever will go away for good, and that you all will be discharged by Monday morning. I think that pretty well says that.

I know you all will again come out of all this on top. Any cold that tries to come on Erin will only get kicked. Stay strong and know that everyone is praying for you.

Hello McKees. I have been a delegate at District Assembly this week so I have not been able to check on Erin and the family until this morning. I am sorry you are having a little bump but being cautious is the best thing even if it means 48 hrs. back in the hospital. I am looking forward to reading how quickly Erin is back out of the hospital and back to the RMH and best of all on her way home to Bethel. I was priviledged to be at our Pastor's ordination service last night. It was wonderful. I counted over 80 people from our church present. I pray that your family will continue to feel God's arms wrapped snuggly and lovingly arournd you. We love you and look forward to the day when you are back in your pew on the left side down front.

I'm glad they admitted Erin tonight just to be on the safe side. You don't want anything to get out of hand. Hi McKees. I'm late in reading yesterday's journal entry so am just now catching up on all your GOOD NEWS! PRAISE GOD FOR HIS GOODNESS!! This journey you're on keeps reminding me of the song about a tapestry --- you know the one where we see only the jumble of the back side of the picture. When we finally take our hands off and let God work, we begin to see the beautiful picture He's painting of our lives. No, I don't believe He deliberately sent Erin's illness -- that is just something that happened because we live in an imperfect and sinful world. I do believe -- and your journal confirms it -- that He cares deeply about His children and that He's been with you all each step of the way. Hold on tight to His hand and to each other -- He won't be the One to let go first and, in fact, He's got "super glue" on his fingers to make sure you're all held safely. I'll be praying for continued good reports on Erin's numbers, for all the children and families who have become part of your "extended family" there in MN, and for God to continually surround you all (including Jess, of course) with His love in such a way that you'll feel Him every minute of every day.

WOW! your counts are really great! i am so happy and relieved that you get to come home soon! i can't wait till you and katie get to come over and spend the day with me! i am praying that everything goes well (which it will) at your next visit with dr. wagner. this week at the fair has been very hott! monday and tuesday were the worst nights! it was terrible because it was really, really, really hott then!!!! after the sun went down both nights turned out to be a really great nights! there was really bad traffic last night on the fair grounds! i don't know if i'll ever be going back on dimolishion durby night again!

WOW - I loved reading the posting this morning. My heart felt like it would burst as the tears streamed down my face. Erin you did it! Excellent job! Kevin I remember you saying when Erin was first diagnosed that you prayed hard and that you truly had a feeling of peace. That Erin would be okay. It would not be easy but she would okay. You had a different look in your eyes. A look of heartache as a parent but a strength from your faith in God that you knew and all of us that spoke with you believe also that Erin would be fine. You are all so blessed. Praise God!

Kevin - Thank you for being such a wonderful pillar of faith, strength and love to Jessica and a good friend to me.

Hi Family. It sounded like your meeting with Dr. Wagner was awesome. And the news that you will be going home soon is even better. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

I haven't written recently because I have been in a training course for the last couple days. But I have been reading the updates whenever I could. You all are in my thoughts and prayers many times during the day. And honestly, it is not all about Erin's results (which are great), but because of the next phase of life you are all entering. In Matthew 10:8, it says "...freely ye have received, freely give". I can already see how you are giving to the other families there. And it won't be a hard thing, because in Matthew 12:34, Jesus says "...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks". And right now, God is filling your hearts with His love and compassion for others who are going through the same things that you have and are going through. It is something that naturally flows out of you. God's perfect work.

No, God didn't put this burden on you to make you a servant, to force you to do His will. But He has given you an opportunity to cast off the harsh yoke of sickness and disease of this present world, and take on His yoke. Why? So you can learn of Him and have peace, for His yoke is easy (Matthew 11:29). That is your testimony.

Well, I must get to work. Too much catch-up to do, but I will talk to you later this weekend.

Hey Dad, Barb, Katie and Erin, WOW what an awesome day yesterday. I'm so proud of you Er-Bear. Just think if you guys got to leave on the 12th and drove home really fast, maybe you could help me move in to my dorm on the 13th! I remember my first visit to see you Erin, we made a plan that you would recovery really quickly so you could come home early and get to see me before I left for College. You've sure pulled through on that deal. Maybe at you're visit next week, Dr. Wagner will just tell you to leave and we'll have a whole week to spend together before I move in. I just wanted to say that you are a remarkable little sister and I am so proud of how far you have come. Katie, I know I can't leave you out, You're great too I love you. Of course, I love you too Dad and Barb. I was so happy reading the journal this morning. I'm sure you guys are ready to break down the doors to come home. but, you better start packing now and rent another truck to bring all your goodies home!!!

I also want to thank everyone for the prayers for my back. Hopefully with the physical therapy it will recover fast and I will be good as new...

well, I'm very happy that your clinic visit went so well last night. I love you guys very much. I'll talk to you later...
