Nicole's Page of Hope
Welcome to Nicole's webpage. Nicole was first diagnosed with an "inoperable" brainstem tumor, technical name is a low-grade brainstem astrocytoma -- focal intrinsic tumor of the pontomedullary junction, when she was 3 1/2 on July 5th 1992. She is now 18 and the fight continues. The beast will not leave us alone ...

During our time as part of CaringBridge and the PBT Nicole and I have made many long distance friends, some are still with us while others have earned their wings. Caringbridge no longer allows us to link to other Caringbridge families but the names stay to honor the families and children.

Friday, December 21, 2007 7:32 AM CST Greetings ~
I have not posted in a very long time, not even sure if anyone even checks Nicole's page any longer. Last year at this time Nicole was in the hospital recovering from her 4th brain surgery. She did very well and was home by Christmas ... it was the best gift ever!
At that same time, as I was seeking emotional supoort and facing the possiblity of Nicole not making it until the surgery, there were some rude posts left in the guestbook. I felt like I had to defend myself to a stranger that did not know a thing about me or my family. It was energy that I did not have to spare and time that I did not have to waste. So, I decided that those who wanted updates and truly cared about Nicole could email me personally to find out how she is doing.
It has been a year. A year of healing. A year of change. Nicole's tumor has been stable, she is spending this Christmas with her Grandmother in OK. Her next MRI is in January. The surgery was hard on her but she has come back better than ever.
My relationship with my partner of 10 years did not survive the stress of Nicole's last battle. I tend to focus on Nicole and block out people when Nicole relapses. It has been the end of many friendships in the past 15 years. Only those who have been through it completely understand ... only those who have been through it can give the support a parent needs to help their child.
On a sidenote. I am creating a book of hypnosis scripts that can be used to help small children through tests and treatments ... as well as the parents. Children have wonderful imaginations and visualization can help take them out of the situation at hand and put them in the park or playing soccer, riding horses on a rainbow, wherever they feel safe. Pain can be shut off, fears can be taken away.
Blessed Solstice, Merry Christmas, Belated Happy Hanukkah and Kwanzaa ... Holiday Cheer and Happy New Year.
Sky, Nicole, and the girls.
