Welcome. I hope this website will help you stay positive and realize that there is HOPE! Katie was diagnosed August 2001 with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. We were devasted. However she has proven to be a remarkable young girl and has become such an inspiration to us as well as many other children now fighting the battle. She has come a very long way and has crossed many hurdles that no little 4 year old should have to endure. We would like to Thank the Staff at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Toronto Sick Kids. A Special thank you to Nana, Poppa and all our Family and Friends. We appreciate all your support and Prayers and Thank you dearly for all you have done for us. Mike, Lisa, Rebecca, Jessica and Katie.
I would like to add this poem to Katie's website...I think it is just beautiful. It was written by the director at Katie's previous day care. It was presented to us on a plaque and it was the dedication to name the Toddler Room "Katie's Room" It was written by Joanne Saunders, Sept.5,2001. With input from Katie's teacher Pam.
KATIE AND THE MAJIC PURPLE SHOES
When Katie came to day care, She was so very shy, She didn't talk, Just learned to walk, And smiled with big brown eyes.
For a child must be very brave, Their journey is very long, The world is so very big, Their shoes so very small.
There came a magic bag of clothes, Much too big for kids, Dresses and skirts, Hats and purses, Unloved, Unwanted and not even missed.
Katie explored each item with care, Until she found her treasure, One pair of magic purple shoes, That would be hers forever.
For a child must be very brave, Their journey is very long, The world is so very big, Their shoes so very small.
Those purple shoes were like magic, On Katie's feet they traveled, They made her brave and not so shy, For singing, talking and laughing. They were there for "play dough" cakes, Sang " Happy Birthday" too, For painted pictures, rocking babies, And friendships all anew.
They were wet after water play, And worn as the butterflies hatched, They were there during hugs for teachers, For Katie and those purple shoes were the perfect match.
For a child must be very brave, Their journey is very long, The world is so very big, And their feet so very small.
Now Katie has a brand new challenge, Far from her familiar life, She'll need the strength of her family and friends, To help her through the strife.
And what will be found upon her feet To help her not to stray? But those magic pair of purple shoes, To keep her safe along the way.
For a child must be very brave, Their journey is so very long, The world is so very big, And the purple shoes, not so very small.
Thank You So Much Joanne for your kind words....and for dedicating the Toddler Room to Katie! May all the children who walk through those doors be as strong and happy as Katie is today.
Journal
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 1:18 PM CST Hello Everyone,
Katie’s test results from yesterday turned out to be GREAT! Her lungs are clean! NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE. There is scar tissue in her lungs due to the lung infection that she had.
As for her liver, she will need to have a repeat CT Scan in 2 months. They feel 95% + that it is not Neuroblastoma, the tumor board feels that it’s something called Hemangioma – angiogram. It’s more or less blood vessels that form together. The repeat scan in 2 months will hopefully confirm this. There is nothing dangerous about Hemangioma.
Yesterday was a very long day, not to mention it’s been quite a roller coaster for the past 6 weeks. We thank everyone for being there for us.
May you all be there in August to join us in celebrating Katie’s survival party! As we were walking out of CHEO yesterday we were both holding Katie’s hands and she said to us “ They picked me (as in needles) three times today for NOTHING”, “I’m fine”!
Thank you all once again.
Mike, Lisa, Rebecca, Jessica and Katie xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
