Dear Steve, Becky, Sarah and Nathan,

Hello again, haven't visited you for a few years but have often thought of you, (I looked for you a few times on the internet but didn't manage to find you). I was wondering how you were all doing. I was hoping hard that Princess Groovy Chick was doing ok!! I moved house five years ago and somehow during that time I managed to lose touch. I am so happy, delighted to see that Sarah is in good health and doing well, also doing so well at school!!! Congratulations groovy chick! I love reading your writings! I adore the photo's of you all, Sarah has grown up into a very beautiful young woman!
I don't know if you will remember me, I live in France and once Becky, you kindly sent me some of your CD's which I really like very much and appreciated your kindness. I'm still in France but live in Alsace now, on the border with Germany and Switzerland.
I hope you will still update now and again, I'm glad it doesn't have to be every day any more!

All my best wishes for Sarah and the rest of you too, take care, Bless you
With love
Angela

Nine years on the 9th--wow! wonderful! We have been a part of this since those 9 years began. It has been great watching Sarah grow into a lovely "teen-age Princess" and enjoying all the different pictures. Thanks for letting us be a part of your family. God bless.

Not sure anyone checks the comments on this site any longer, but I thought I'd stop by here today. It seems the appropriate venue to say HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Princess Groovy Chick. Nine years and counting!! How awesome!

Haven't been here in quite a while as I go to the "Blog" instead. So glad there are no stories as in the past here. God is sooooo good! Like the sixteen picture--think I might remember when that one was taken. Thanks again, Sarah, for allowing us to be part of your 16th birthday. It will always be one of our special memories as well as the first time we met you and your parents at Duke I believe in Feb. 2007. Take care and God bless. Love you!!

Dropping in to say I still think of you.. it has been a while but here I am!! Glad all is well and i am looking forward to reading the blog and seeing pictures of your gorgeous family.. My most memorable story.. probably not a story at all but it is the image you portray... One of a loving mother and happy family. That is what I remember most. You have the light of your children in your posts and I love feeling your love through your words.. Your undying dedication to your children and the admiration you hold for them is amazing.. Keep it up Mrs. Smith, you are a wonderful mother... God bless all of you..

My favorite(s) is when Sarah would go to the hospital with her Dad (and Mom) to visit parishioners who were battling cancer, and that she would offer her own prayer for them. Always supportive, always encouraging!!

My favorite memory isn't an entry on the site (although you did recap it later). I'll never forget getting to meet you in person, and sharing a meal. You, Steve, and Sarah were so gracious (and adventurous) to meet several Atlanta folks in a little restaurant in my neighborhood. I remember Steve sharing his olives with my kiddo, the laughter, the wonderful feeling of breaking bread with old friends even though we'd just met in person. And the awe of seeing this sweet miracle child in person, experiencing her grace.

Wow! This is a tough one. A favorite, I think it would be impossible to pick. While some of your writings are sad, they are part of this amazing journey your family has been through. The laughter, the tears, and the most important; Sarah is healthy and thriving! Beating the odds, doing well in school, enjoying life, and being one of the top students in her class. But, one photo that sticks out in my mind, is the one of Sarah among all of the cards she received for her birthday many years ago. There is something about the pure innocence of that photo that makes me smile even typing about it here. I have learned so much about your family, faith, life and gratitude by reading your words and following Sarah's (the Smith Family as we all know cancer affects the whole family) Journey. I have gotten to know you personally, outside the BLOG and for that I am grateful. Many Blessings to your family! Love you guys!

It's difficult to pick a favorite out of all the entries I've read and enjoyed here...kind of like picking a favorite child, you know? :) However, I will say that, when Sarah started high school, it was the exact same week that my daughter (who is my youngest) started high school and a very emotional time for me. I remember thinking how Becky had the extra layer of emotion given Sarah's medical history and wondering how on earth she made it through that time. I'm so happy for Sarah and feel blessed to be able to follow the Smith family adventures at Smithellaneous.

Becky, I cannot come up with any special time - they are ALL special. I think the two greatest are when I got to meet you and Sarah at Baptist Hospital and then several months later when you and Sarah came to my home.

Hmmm..... very good question Becky been here around 2006.

1) When Sarah had her 11 birthday the 'Sarah gets her own zipcode' and all her birthday card.

2) Sarah's 13 birthday (I think it was that one) I remember founding that entry very touching.
3) The one with the pink hat. Where you had found it agian and Sarah wore it agian.
4)When you were about to leave your former home and Sarah 'hugged'' the house.

Hard to believe it has been 9 years since you were first diagnosed, but the Lord has brought you and your family through thick and thin with this cancer, your mom's copd and cancer - cancer removed from Nate and your dad - WOW, He has really been with the entire family. It's exciting to hear from you at times and hear what is going on in your life whether in school or your daily life. So glad to hear you had been doing well in school, and hope you are enjoying your summer. God's blessings to you and your family.

Dear Sarah:

Wow...has it been a long time...I highly doubt you remember me at all, but just in case... Remember, pre-cancer, when your family traveled to a small town in Wisconsin and lived there for a while in a trailer? We were best friends back then... my mom [Pamela Kyle, Arden and Glenna Adamson's daugter] sent me a link to your blog, and the first thing I thought of was the very last day I saw you... the day we exchanged dress up clothes :] You gave me a pair of white, glittery fairy wings, and I gave you a pair of black velvet shoes that had small jewels sewn onto the toes. We decided that I would keep the purse that matched those shoes so that we could have "friendship clothes" and remember each other forever. I highly doubt you still have those shoes, but I still have that tiny purse somewhere...and it makes me smile every time I look at it :] So glad to hear that you're doing so well. God bless, and best wishes from Indiana:

Hi Sarah,
My name is Danette Baker and I have been following your site for many years. Can't remember exactly how many. I know I didn't know of you when you had your bone marrow transplant but I do remember the relapse in 2006 :( I have never had cancer but my own disability includes many of the medical things you have been through. Pain is pain is pain and the diagnosis really doesn't matter all that much. :) Once your mom started Smithellaneous I began reading over there daily and transferring over to Sarah's spot from time to time. I want to congratulate you on your 9th survivor anniversary. 10 years ago I went through a medical emergency that saw me released from the hospital 2 months later with a trach, chronic pain, and the need for full time nursing care. I remember so clearly the first time I woke up in ICU and began to put the pieces together of what had just happened and how my life had changed I realized so clearly that God had spared me for a reason known only to Him and now my responsibility was to find that reason as much as I could (because I know I will never know the full story this side of heaven) and fulfill it. This past May, May 8th, marked my 10th anniversary and it has been amazing what has occurred over those 10 years. Many people were surprised that I wanted to celebrate this day (and I still haven't found exactly the way I want that to happen), because it changed my life in so many ways but I know I must, not because it is an obligation but a joy. I love reading your site because your family is much like mine in so many ways. I have a wonderful brother who has a heart so much like Nathan and both my parents are my strongest supporters just like yours with my mom being with me every second of every hour that I am in the hospital either inpatient or out. We need to complete our family with a little dog similar to Snowy and as we choose a breed I find myself a little particle to Maltese. I think the hardest thing I have had to deal with in the last 6 months or so is the fact that my ability to think and "be intellectual" has really gone down because of the heavy pain meds I am on. Because this is something that can't be seen when someone looks at me I am not even sure how many people realize this has become a part of my life. So when I read of your academic achievement I to become excited because I know how daunting that has been for you over the last year or so. I appreciate so much your mom's blog and her sharing her family with the world. Thanks for putting up with all the pictures :) You are a blessing to me!

Nine years...more than half your life...spent as a survivor. What a blessing. What a gift. What a special young lady who has weathered many storms only to have found lasting sunshine.

May all your days be richly blessed with love, with health, with a bright and shiny purpose that fuels your future. What I love best about you is your example of not dwelling on the past, but always looking toward the future with clarity, vision, and focus.

You will do special things in this life, with this life. And you will be an integral part of a future filled with hope and promise.

Easter Reflections

With OUR EYES we see
The beauty of Easter
As the earth awakens once more.

With OUR EARS we hear
The birds sing sweetly
To tell us spring again is here.

With OUR HANDS we pick
The golden daffodils
And the fragrant hyacinths.

But only with OUR HEARTS
Can we feel the MIRACLE of GOD'S LOVE
Which redeems all men.

And only with OUR SOUL
Can we make our 'pilgrimage to God'
And inherit His Easter Gift of ETERNAL LIFE.

by Helen Steiner Rice

Have a wonderful Easter and know that you are surrounded with love and prayers always.

Just got done listening to "Doin' my Daddy Thing" - Steve's solo on one of their cd's. It is so precious. Folks, if you don't have any of Becky and Steve's cd's, you are really missing out on a blessing. What great music and many of the songs, Becky wrote. They were at our church in MN when Sarah was about 2-3 years old and have enjoyed their music for these many years. May the Lord continue to strengthen Sarah and Becky's bodies, Steve as he ministers the Word, meet their financial needs and be with Nathan in his studies and as he desires to let the Lord lead him.

Well, I think I'm caught up in my reading past entries on this site. I still love the way you write about Sarah, sharing her successes and her triumphs over cancer-related issues. She is a walking testament to God's faithfulness, mercy and grace. I am confident that her purpose in life will be well defined and very important. As for what she will be when she grows up...well, I suspect she will be whatever her heart desires. Narrowing that down to one thing may be the only "problem" she has!

Without a single, teensy doubt in my mind, I know you will cherish, and do cherish, every second of Sarah's life and Nathan's and Meagan's and every person you love. I wish every parent in the world could read a site like this or any other because if there is only one thing, and there are many more, that I have very selfishly taken from all the hurt and pain and suffering that too many have endured during their cancer journey is - every minute, every request, every car trip, every disturbed moment of sleep, every laugh and every tear with your child is a gift and never think there is anything else more important than that moment because we, who have healthy children, are blessed beyond words. My heart aches for all who do not have this privilege and pleasure. May Sarah continue to be here for as many years as my mother - 99 years yesterday - we celebrated.

May God Bless your angel, you are so lucky to share your love with your daughter i lost my son on June 29, 2009 he was 11 years old, he had a very agressive tumor he fought for his life he never gave up, and its true every day i pass through the school he used to go i can see him walking to his classroom and i tell God how lucky those parents are to be able to do this, parents sometimes don't realize that those moments are precious i remember when i dropped my son at school i would wait to see him walking i wanted to remember those days for ever, it breaks my hearth to tell u this cause my life is not the same ther's an empty space in my hearth that nothing and nobody can fill I miss my angel Christian so much you are so blessed to be able to hold, kiss, and love your daughter may God Bless You and Sarah and enjoy every second of her life.

Excellent post and fabulous gentle reminder! Thank you! We have just this year with our oldest starting middle school, and there are many times when I think about how "rough" teenage years can be, but that is worldly views, and they don't have to be our views. Instead, we can have a wonderful time with our soon to be teenager, and embrace what is to come instead of not looking forward to it.

Thanks again for sharing your heart.

Wow. This is exactly what I need to hear. We've been having such a challenging time with our daughter's behavioral challenges lately and I've been so very weary and worn out. However, your perspective has blessed and encouraged me to focus on my gratitude of having her as my daughter and finally getting to be a mom!
Thanks again,
Jenna Hoff

A late Happy 8th being free from the big "C." What a wonderful blog that was/is going to be used for teaching. Your story regarding Sarah has done so much for others, and in that writing, without realizing, you will continue to help others along the way. May the Lord continue to use the entire family through this experience.
