Hello Swimmer Family,
This is Brandon Elams mom Anita. I'm sure you guys had a great time meeting Lance Armstrong and being their for the Ride for the Roses event. When we went back in Oct 2005 we had a great time. He is a really great guy. When Brandon relasped in Sept 06 Lance called him the day we found out to let him know to keep fighting and gave him his # if he nver needed to tlak. I just thought that was so nice. Scott we got your email from awhile ago, but it has been very crazy with doctor and hospital visits. I'm sure you understand. We would like to know more info and if Brandon is up to it we would love to be apart of the event.
Thanks,
Anita Elam

Wow, I just read your page, and that is awesome that you got to ride with Lance Armstrong!!!

Also noticed that Nikki signed too. And when I read your page I thought about her having the same cancer. I also know Tara who was treated at CMC with that type.

My daughter Abby is a survivor. She was 4 months old when diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, and she will be 5 one month from today. She is cancer free. Woo Hoo!!!!!!!

Looks like you are doing good. I have seen a lot of sadness in the past few years, and it is always so great to see a SURVIVOR. My best to you and your family.

Hi Mason,
I just heard about what you've been going through and wanted to wish you continued strength and wellness. I don't know if you'll remember me from Huntington either, Sherry(front desk). After seeing you here, I'm not surprised you've come through this on top. You smile and friendly attitude was appreciated by all here at HLC, and I'm sure that attitude helped you through a lot of your recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope we get to see you again in the future!

Hey Mason,
Not sure if you remember me or not but wanted to let you know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers (as well as others at HLC). I seldom worked with you while at the center but saw you in passing many times. I am thrilled to learn that the surgery and treatment are going well. Keep the determined attitude ! ! Stop by and see us and show off the new car.

Hey Mason! My name is Ryan Dawson and I am here signing your guestbook, very proud of your accomplishments and bravery. I was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma cancer in January of '97, when I was 13 years old. I did chemotheraphy for a year, with multiple surgeries in between. I am proud to be here today, as a 21 year old cancer survior, and tell you that everything is okay. The most important thing to remember when going through something like this is that your friends and family love you and support you, no matter what. The thing that got me through it was the support from family and friends. My doctors were pretty fun, too! You will have a completely new outlook on life a few years down the road from all of this. You learn to cherish life, because the Lord has given you another chance to make something of yourself. Keep your head high, always trust family and friends (for they will always be there to listen), and don't be afraid to go after whatever you want. Enjoy your new car, man! And feel free to call or e-mail me anytime. God bless...

The message in the TBE newsletter embraced all that is special about you, your family and this community. It also led me back to this website, where I learned about your helping another family at Christmas. I loved seeing the pictures, too; you're the best-looking family in Charlotte, by far. Matt and I wish you continued success in your incredible achievements--and be careful in that car!

My husband is a cancer survivor of over 30 years and he keeps up with your progress. Hang in there, I know it is rough but you are tough and you will beat this thing. Good luck, your are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hey Kiddo!
We put in your name during open prayer at church on Sunday and were delighted when we heard someone else pray for you too! Charlie and Cooper pray for you at night and wonder when you'll baby sit for them again and play dentist. Be sure to bring some yellow kitchen gloves with you! We love you!

Hey Mason, my name is Dan Krusch, although you do not know me very well, I can still remember you. You used to go to the JCC Sunday school a few years back. I never really knew you that well and we never hung out that much, I still remember you going to the JCC. A few months ago I was at services and I heard your name called for the Mourners Kaddish. When I heard your name called, I knew that it was very familiar. I didn't think it was the same Mason that I knew awhile back. A few months later, I heard that you had cancer, but fought it. Wow. What a blessing it is that you are doing well these days. Hey man, live strong, be strong. Seeya later.

Please allow me to introduce myself to you. I'm an acquaintance of a friend of a friend of someone who said they met Scott or someone like him at a party "some time ago".
Seeing as how I really feel I know you and how intiment(sp?) I am with your family....well.....at least your Mom (can't you see the similarities when you look in the mirror,"son"?) I thought I'd send best wishes your way from my way. This in no way means that my sincerity is lost because I don't know who you are or have never met you....am I rambling?? I think so....no way! WAY!
So hey, hope to see you someday. My love to your sisters....uh....you DO have some sisters, don't you?? Well, how 'bout brothers? Brother? Dog? Friends???

Mason,
Hi, there. The Overcash family (and lots of other folks!) are out hear thinking about you and your family. Its really great to read the web site and see that things are progressing. One of these days, we'll have to compare knee and cancer surgery scars. With all the prayers from our loved ones and the expert medical care we can get here in Charlotte (not to mention a fighting attitude of our own) I was able to recover from both cancer and knee replacement surgery. You are following in that same path. Don't let up, pal. Fight like hell, help the Drs. do their thing and continue to live life to the fullest. It may be hard to understand now, but, when this is all over, you will one day realize that going through all of this will make one very special person - a person who will have a better perspective on life, be more determined, yet more compasionate than most and a person who sees and lives life in the fullest. Its really a blessing. God has his plans for all of us. He must have really big plans for you. I'm looking forward to seeing you continue to grow up and make your mark on the world.

Mason, I will be praying for you and especially next Thursday during your surgery. My son Andrew was diagnosed with ALL February 6th 2004. He is only 5 and I agree with you that the disease picked on the wrong body. Hang tough and know that GOD only selects a special few to fight this fight. Andrew is in remission and doing great as I pray that you will achieve as well in the near future. I spoke to your grandad today and he said that you were going to school - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!. After watching Andrew deal with his chemo I was more impressed with Sam Mills and Mark Fields attending work in the NFL. Stay focused and strong.

We are thinking of you daily. Diana is wanting to swim with you again, I think she has a crush on you. Keep your head up, my dear, your spirit and extended family will see your brave heart through all the dark. Trust that there is light, and that it will come. People keep telling me we never get more than we can handle. Bullshit. We get what we get, but it is how we handle it that shows who we are. Bad things do happen to good people, but good people rise above. I know you can. You are so loved.

Dear Mr. Swimmer,
Its Meghan Patrick just to let you know.  Well i just wanted to let you know that it was very kind of you and Mrs. Swimmer to let us stop by today.  It meant so much for me.  I wasn't sure i was going to be able to handle it but after being with all of you it just felt like it used to.  Mason was a pleasure to be around with and i had a lot of fun.  If there is anything i can do to help, please let me know.  i hope i will be able to stop by more often.  Thanks again, I am thinking about Mason all the time and praying every night.  If you need anything, call my cell.
Love,

Meghan,
You don't ever have to thank Carola or me for 'allowing' you to be with Mason. We feel so much joy & gratitude that you (and some of your friends) care for him to the degree that you do. We understand that many people want to do more but find it difficult to know exactly what (and when). It's a tricky situation and an unpredictable schedule but we're all going to adjust to it and see him through. Knowing that you will help is comforting and positively therapeutic. It's good for you to "get over" your awkward feelings about seeing your friend in a compromised state. I know it's not so easy. But ultimately, it's good for both parties. Tell your friends how easy Mas is and accepting and appreciative he is about seeing and being seen by his friends. Obviously, there will be days where he won't be up to visits, but we'll arrange them for you when appropriate.
You've got a good heart, Meghan and your concern and prayers are appreciated. Keep it up.
Love, Scott

You have a great spirit, and a huge support system. You are also very cute, especially with the bald head! I hope the nurses are treating you ok (I'm half-way through nursing school). Hello Mason,
As I was reading your story, I realized we have a lot in common.I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease three months before I graduated from college. I was 21 and I felt like it was the worst timing imaginable. After I thought about it, there really never is a good time to have cancer. It was my senior year and while everyone was out partying, I was in my apartment making sure I recieved enough rest. I began chemo immediately and it lasted for 6 months, followed by radiation for one month. Halfway through someone lent me Lance's book and I finished it within three days. I couldn't put it down, his journey and his thoughts were very similar to mine. Toward the end of this year it will be three years that I have been in remission and four since I was diagnosed. With the help of my professors I graduated with my class. My plans were pushed back a little, but I seem to be back on track and feeling better than ever. Keep up your faith and hope! Throughout this time you realize who your true friends are. You'll be in my thoughts.

Hi Mason,
I don't know if you remember me or not but I met you at Christmas. I am Ed and Mike LaRocque's sister Caroline. I am the one that was overseas last year with my National Guard unit in Iraq and Kuwait. I hope that you are keeping you spirits up. One thing that helped us get through some hard times was being able to read letters from all over. Words of encouragement are great even if you don't know the person sending them. My daughter, Megan, and I will keep you in our prayers. If there is anything that we can do to help you or your family please let us know. With the quote that was written on the front page of this, you are obviously a survivor. Good luck and keep smiling!!

As a child of a cancer survivor, the disease is constantly on my mind, hoping and waiting for the magical fifth-year day when all is well. And as a cyclist who just completed a 100-mile ride, Lance is the only sports or entertainment figure that I consider a hero. But the best thing is: he is a regular person, just like you. I was reading the story on ESPN on Lance Armstrong and I happened on your story. I am reminded of a saying I saw written on the road on L'Alpe d'Huez in this years tour. Mason,

I was reading about Lance Armstrong on the ESPN website when I came across your story and I just wanted to offer more encouragement for you. So, I hope you will remember, when times are tough, as Lance has said, "Never lose faith in yourself. Believe in yourself, believe in the medicine, believe in your doctors, believe in your family and friends who love you and are praying for you every day. Stay positive. Keep fighting. Be motivated even by small results."

Use every resource available to help you. Friends, family, and faith. Rely on your spiritual, physical, and mental strength. Your mind is a very powerful tool. Take time every day to visualize the cancer getting smaller and visualize yourself actually kicking cancer out of your body. Cancer is tough, but cancer doesn't stand a chance against you. You are tougher! Like you said, "Cancer picked the wrong f###ing body." You are a fighter and you have a GREAT spirit. You can do it; you will do it!! You are a great inspiration, too, just like Lance.

Hi Mason,
It was great to see you today. You look great and I can see improvements everyday. Hopefully you will get to go home tomorrow. I emailed your dad the web site for the Bike Race in Charlotte on Aug 8, 2004. I am going to order a bunch of the bracelets and we can pass them out at the race. You are a true fighter. Keep up the great work. You are in my thoughts and prayers daily.

Hi Mason,
You don't know me but my name is Donna Bowers. I am Lacy's mom and we are in in Room 7926. Lacy and I have been checking your website this week. She thinks you are so cute! Your sweet Mom gave Lacy two of the beautiful hats that she knitted. She is so talented! Tell your Dad thanks for the sweet message that he left for Lacy on her website. Just wanted you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Hope you are feeling better and get to go home soon.

Hi Mason, though I don't know you well, I know your family and am all too familiar with what you all are going through right now. Rely on your family to keep you strong (they will), pray when you don't think it will have any effect (it will) and take comfort in all your friends and friends of family who are praying for you all over the globe. The best part of all of this, is that when it's over, you will truly know how to live! You are in our thoughts and prayers daily, Debbie Fitts

Mason - It has been such a long time since we have seen each other, and I wanted to let you know that over time the heart only grows fonder of those that touch it. My father just indicated that you have this amazing website, so here are some thoughts to encourage you to put this where it belongs - GONE FOREVER! Obstacles are things we can go over, around, under or through! You are and always have been a winner - and here you will be as well. As your former babysitter you must do what I say - Get Well! Fight this! Be strong! Stay Positive! You are going to need to babysit my children one day. Our thoughts, support and prayers are with you and your family.

Dearest Mason

Traveling from Panama to El Salvador I had plenty of airport time to think about you before I would visit a friend of many years Jorge Bahaia. A man of position and wealth he started as a poor immigrant from Lebanon who made his way to El Salvador hoping to go on further to the States.

Jorge is 80 now but never misses a days work. In a most competitive environment, he performs making decisions on issues that embrace many millions of dollars and high risk. When in need of relaxation he permits himself to indulge in his favorite past time, baseball and with maxim illusion, he fly's to Los Angeles 6 or 7 times a season to see the Dodgers play at home.

I spoke to him of your passion and showed him your photo he said " do not to worry, you will be seeing the Dodgers play at 80 and will take your grandchildren to the game to buy them hot-dogs peanuts and crackerjacks." For my part I can only add that I am thinking of you on this Friday afternoon and close in wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and great peace of mind.

Affectionately your friend Steven Kropp

Hey Mason,
It's Amy Robison again, Kirk's wife. He said he got to see you last night and that you look great. He can't believe how strong all of you are. It is although a less than desirable situation, one that not only all of your will grow from but the people around you. It is these times that make us stop and look around at what is truly important and the path we want to take in our lives. I believe that you are gonna bounce back with avengence and be good as new with more strength than you will be able to grasp even then. I don't know why we have to go through these hard trials in our lives; perhaps it is to remind us how insignificant we truly are, or to remind us how truly strong we can be, but you will walk away from this with grace and strength and I can't wait for you to experience that day and every day that follows....

Mason,
Has anyone told you ( of course the honey girls have beaten me to this!!!!) that you have a perfect head shape? No lumps, no bumps - you look too cool!

Seriously, I pray for you at night before I fall asleep, and I always send you love and warmth and strength.

And then there is Anna. She worked for me parttime all during her highschool years. She was not only cute as a model, smart and friendly, but she was part of a national champion cheerleading squad. Oh well, I thought, that's like looking cute in a short tutu and smiling prettily. I couldn't have been more off! When I saw her perform, I realized that she was a tough, top fit athlete! Wow, impressive - they flew through the air, built tall, human pyramids - you get the picture!

One day she told me that she had to go to the doctor for some follow-up scan. That's when she shared with me that she had beaten bone cancer only a year and a helf ago. I was floored - she looked so great and had this kick-a-- attitude! An amazing girl then, and today, she has long graduated from college and is still fit as all!

Mason, you will be so much stronger and wiser for all the tough and painful moments you are living through right now. You are never alone! So many of us think about you and pray for you! Believe it!

Deine Elli

Mason, I'm sorry to hear you have bumped into a little stumbling block on your journey through this life but let me tell you not a day goes by that someone doesn't call the office asking about your progress. Being a "chip" off the old block, as they say, I know you will whip this thing and you can in some way help another kid someday get down this same path with love and compassion. You have wonderful parents that love you and a brother that thinks the world of you too. Keep your chin up and whip this thing. You are in my prayers and will continue to be so until we see this thing through.

It is so hard to find the right words to say when I am still in such disbelief. Kirk and I were so very shocked when we heard the news, but we immediately let go of any doubts knowing what a strong person Mason is and the loving family that surrounds him. God will hold you in his hands Mason, I have complete faith in your determination to beat this thing. My mother had cancer twice and I don't know what it feels like to have to deal with this type of cancer, but as a family member looking in, I know how hard it is to watch someone you love so dearly go through this. Please know that if there is anything that Kirk and I can do, please let us know we are here for all of you! Our love and prayers always,

We have a bed with your name on it, and we expect to see you here next summer. Take care and we will see you soon.

Hello friends and family.
Thank you for checking in on Mason and for all of your good wishes.
Mas was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) 6-16-2004 and went through his first session of chemo this week.
It is isolated to his upper right tibia (below his knee).
It's been estimated to take approx. 10 months of treatments & surgery (in September).
He's home for a couple of weeks now, then more treatments.
The prayer vibe is strong and we know that it works.
Write him here to send laughter & cheer.
We know Mason will come through this like a champ.

Love, Carola, Scott & Toby
