Karl's courage and spirit should be an inspiration to us all. I am Sue Hoeflinger's sister and been fortunate to have had her share many KARL stories over the years.

Kathy, Karl and Chink,

Tommy wanted to be able to say a few words, especially to Karl, but didn't quite know what to say? It's tough being a young person who is having great difficulty understanding what is happening to his friend, and why? We talk about you often and want you to know that you are constantly in our thoughts and prayers.

Peace be with you,
Always

Kathy, Karl and Chink!
You all are amazing! We say prayers outloud each night and we pray daily for your strength, hope and courage. We also pray for the tumor's disappearance! Karl is getting back to some normalcy and it looks like it suits! I'm sorry that we didn't make it to his play. Looks like everyone had a ball...reminds me of our old Girl Scout days...Jonny Appleseed, Jonah and the Whale and Pippi Longstocking. Josie used to be in the Junior League "Players" as I remember, so that's where Karl gets his genes for this, huh? Thanks for the Christmas card. I know I can count on you all to have a great holiday. You'll stay in our prayers and I hope to get a New Year's walk in with you, Kathy! Love, JOY

Hi Kathy,
I am new to Karl's site. I met your friend Martha at our school's book fair. Martha asked me a simple question---do you work outside of the home?---and that led to my telling her about my daughter that was diagnosed with a brain tumor (medulloblastoma) in Nov., 2003. SHe, in turn, told me about Karl. So here I am.
I was so pleased to read that his last MRI was stable. I know so well the angst that comes with this diagnosis, as well as the blessings of the wonderful world of people that buoy us up when we are down.
If you have interest in keeping in touch with another BT mom, please feel free to email me.
I wish you a wonderful holiday season and great health in the new year (and beyond.)

Hi Karl, Kathy and Chink-

I just caught up on your progress and am so happy everything is going well. I'm glad you had fun at CFS (after the danger passed :-) ). I don't know if you heard, but we have moved south of town (out of the district) and M.E. will be going to CFS in the fall. She's sorry to leave her friends at Phillips, but excited too. It's my alma mater, so I'm really excited! Anyway, we think of you every time we drive by Humphries Nursery. Have fun fencing and stay on your bike from now on!

What wonderful news for the new year!! It is obvious that Karl is a very special young man. I use "man" deliberately. I admire his ability and willingness to "keep on chugging." I also admire and respect the love and support which you have shown to and for him. Hello Kathy, Chink and Belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY KARL!
I am pleased that I tuned in here just in time to send you birthday wishes. Its springlike today with crocus, daffodil, and star magnolia blossoms opening to the warmth of our sun but I have heard that a snowstorm is predicted for tomorrow! How can we expect ourselves and others to be consistent when even Nature is inconsistent? The one thing we can rely on is that life is constantly changing, and thankfully, we are too. Sometimes change is easy and sometimes its real, real hard...that's when I cry OR I decide that I need to go to Santeetlah! Change there seems slower, quieter and I feel safe in the lap of our Mother Earth. I hope that you'll return to our cabin this summer. Actually, I hope we'll be celebrating the 4th of July there this summer with the basement bedrooms completed. Its hard to believe that we started to enclose the basement last April, on a warm day like this one, that turned into a late April blizzard. That blizzard began the spring rains which metamorphized into summer thunderstorms and then, hurricane downpours which made a H U G E muddy mess! Keep your fingers crossed that this year will be mild-mannered, on all of us, and that we'll all have a chance to enjoy Santeetlah, ah, ah :) one day soon.
Be strong, Maryska

Karl,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Karl, I hope you have a wonderful birthday day and a good year. I pray that you will have a full recovery, and that every day you will get stronger and have more energy to do the things that you enjoy. Your name has been lifted up in prayer to Jesus. "I will be with you always." Mathew 28:20

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all three of you as you go through the ups and downs of the disease. I know that Karl is a real inspiration and joy to you both. I also know that it takes real strength and courage to "be there" for a child with a very serious illness. If I can ever help in any way other than prayer which I and our church have done frequently, please let me know. Chink, you know I am sitting on a ton of leave, so --if you need any--please let me know. Best Wishes

I love the picture of Karl on the ski tube relaxing at the lake. We are so glad that he is able to continue to read and work on the computer (as I fumble along!) Dear Kathy, Karl, and Chink: This is so great to read, because in day to day we can't really talk about
these things much, but we have been wondering. We pray at
every meal for Karl and others we know who are battling cancer. Matthew LOVED doing the editorial cartoons for Mr. Z. and we enjoyed it too. Funny how it is now 4 years later, and an election year to boot! Glad things are going well for him in the class, there also seems to be a nice group of
kids in his class, too. Also we are so glad to see him looking so good. We will keep checking and please let us know any way we can help. Now that we seemed to have worked through the nasty viruses and things we have had over the past month or so, Sam hopes to have Karl over again when possible!
