Hello Doreen, saw this today and wanted to enligthen you:
Psalm 121 A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD watches over you—
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Doreen. So glad to see your post. I am going to call Lou and get your phone number again and give you a call. Hope you don't mind. I am in Florida right now spending a week with my parents. My energy level is outstanding. Still moaning like I am 100 yrs old when I get in and out of cars or up off the couch. Have aches and pains especially in my joints. If this is all I have to suffer with I am greatful. Not sure if I have osteoarthritis or if the "almost 50" has caught up with me. I can live with tylenol and motrin. Hope you improve each day and get more strength back. Summer is coming and I know when you can get out in your yard and putts around you will perk up. Just stay out of the dirt girlie. Will be calling you when I get home. Take care. Love ya Pam

Doreen. I remember how much work the daily bath can be. I often think of that when showering now and how much energy I have when Im done. And how great it is to not have a line to worry about. Not sure if you still have your Hickman catheter. It will get better. So glad you are back online. Take care. Keeping you in prayer. Pam

Doreen,
I hope you are feeling better as each day moves on. I was talking to Judy Moyer this evening and she shared this website with me. WOW...you have been down a long tough road. In a short period of time, you'll look back at his and rejoice it's all behind you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi Doreen .. I am so happy for you ! Your (and Margy's) updates to keep everyone informed was so helpful .. and as I think about you being on the "final approach" in August .. I now realize that you truly have "touched down" (yes .. I had labeled touch down as "100% recovery" .. and while you are not at 100% .. you are on your way). You have endured the turbulence though your positive attitude, built in drive, physical strength, and spiritual beliefs and have now "overcome". I'm very proud of you and extremely happy for you ! Always continue to keep the faith .. and always keep looking toward the Future.

Sincerely .. your "happy" friend .. with thoughts and prayers always,

Ed ...

Doreen. Im so excited for you. Nothing like home and your own bed. So glad you are making progress everyday. Hope you can get ahold of a computer at home and keep us all updated. When people ask what they can do for you, make sure you tell them and let them. Dont try to be super woman! Just putting together something to eat or do a load of wash can wipe you out. Take it easy, but not too easy. So happy for you. Take care. Pam

Congratualtions. Great news. Your enthusiasm shows in your writing style. And "good" news about your fall, now you have functioning platelets and whites so it wasn't worse. Remember, Mayo offers wheelchairs. Great job, both of you. Did you see that Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul and Mary) is planning a reunion concert after an unrelated BMT for her leukemia? Hi Doreen,
I thought these stinking cords were supposed to be less GVHD. Well, I am glad you are recovering. Mia had a rough go for a while as well (not quite as bad as you), but she is recovering as well. I hope you are able to enjoy Thanksgiving. Mia is on a lactose free diet, so makes it kindof limited. But oh well, we are greatful.

Hooray and congratulations! Is a chocolate diet bad news? Could be worse. Enjoy it while you can. Now you know why we survivors appreciate life so much, and don't worry about the little things. Thanksgiving becomes one of our most important holidays. Yup, we've got a lot to be grateful for. Love & stuff.

Doreen and Margy. Thanks Margie for being there for Doreen during this difficult time in her life. Doreen you are in my prayers daily. Im so glad to hear things will be finally moving forward. Im sure that it must be discouraging to have taken one step forward and two back. Please look at the big picture. Im sure many times you have thought about how good you felt before this and wonder if it has been all worth while. It has Doreen. AFter you get your strenth back you will have a future of hopefully being disease free and not being dependent on transfusions and constant dr's office visits. Im not sure where you are with your job but if you have to find another one, you will. I have lost my job at the hospital of 32yrs. Not that I cant go back in 6 months, but will be at the bottom of seniority and time off. Thats ok. So much to be thankful for. How are you doing financially? Maybe your church, or work can do a few fund raisers to help you to get back on your feet. I tried to email you but your email address must have been associated with your work, so I couldnt leave you a phone number. I will try and call you again, just dont want to bug you. Just to let you know, Mia is having some gvhd of the gut and skin. Both stage 3. She has started treatment. We pray this will work for here. Sorry I have been so long winded. Hope you start to get stronger each day! Love ya Pam

Doreen. So good to hear an update on you. So happy the gvh is under control. Don't be discouraged on how long it will take to gain your strengh back. One day at a time. Praise God that the bmb showed no MDS/leukemia. This road has been a bit longer than you had anticipated but you must be encouraged that its moving in the right direction. Give me a call anytime. Hey everyone. Talked with Doreen on the phone today. She is being treated for gvhd of her gut and lower intestinal track. Having no pain in her belly and the diarrhea has subsided. They are still trying new drugs to treat the intestinal track such as horse and rabbit serum. Her lungs, liver and kidneys are GREAT and she is 100% engrafed with her new stem cells! Still on total nutrition in her IV and not taking any food in, as to let the intestinal track heal. Those four walls are starting to close in on her. Please pray they release her soon and she gets to go home and not to an apartment. She really thinks this would boost her overall mood. Unable to make journal entrys at this time as she does not have use of a computer. Have a great day, Pam

Doreen. So glad Margie posted yesterday. I was getting ready to call your room and talk with you personally! LOL Thanks Margie. Boy Doreen. Margie has a lot of spunk. I can tell. That is just who you need there with you making sure all those health professionals dot their i's and cross their t's. As a nurse you know it never hurts to have one more check point. So glad you are engrafted. Hows the counts? So sorry to hear you got the dreaded gut gvhd. Hoping they get ahold of this and you respond well to treatment. Cant say you didnt get enough gvhd to clean up any stray blasts, or myleodysplastic cells. Love it if we could all hear how your doing every couple of days. WE all worry so much about you. Doreen. Sorry to hear you had to be re-admitted so soon after transplant. But, that is where you want to be to get that gvh under control. That is why they stress that you let them know early so they can get a hold of it. How you doin? Try and drop me a line in my mail if you get a chance. My Mom emailed me today and said "Doreen has not posted in a few days. Hope she is not still in the hospital". She follows your journal too. Hope you continue to get better. Doreen. Im so glad Margie posted and you are doing great. I know you dont feel great, but doing as well as expected. The nausea for me lasted about 90days post transplant. I was taking 3-0.5mg of ativan everyday. Its no wonder I was so tired. The fatigue can last along time too. Take as many meds as needed to keep the nausea in check so you can eat and drink. Where is your skin GVH? I had it just on my chest..kinda in a V shape. They never did biopsy it but steroid cream made it go away. Take one day at a time. It takes a while to heal what that chemo does to your stomach. Love ya Pam

Doreen. Im so excited you are finally home and most importantly your counts are rising. How is your appetite? Remember everything will taste weird for quite a while but do your best to eat and drink. Keep a close eye for gvh and any slight sign make sure you let the docs know so they can catch it early. You are on your way now. Enjoy the apartment. Isnt it great not to be awaken non stop and have to drag the IV pole around! Take care...love ya Pam

Doreen,
Glad to see that you are progressing. I know that the IV pole can be a real pain. Ask your doctor if it would be possible to use a backpack pump instead. I used one for several months. It gave me easy mobility, up and down stairs as well as outside a bit, and made me feel less of an invalid. God bless you and know that many are praying for you.

Doreen. I am so glad you are showing signs of engrafement! I have been worried about you. How did your bone marrow biopsy turn out? Show some action going on in the marrow? Im so glad you are going to be allowed to get up and walk. It will do alot for recovery. When I was in we had group support meetings every Monday. That was also quite helpful. Met so many other transplant patients and their family. Good luck. Keeping you in prayer.

Doreen. It must be about +25? From what Kristy and Mia said..it takes a while longer for stem cells to engraft. I know you had trouble after induction. You just have to be difficult, dont you? LOL. Anyway, glad you posted yesterday. I worry and pray for you every day. Keep strong and positive. I know those 4 walls can make you crazy. Just got out of hospital and was in 5 days. Never left the room. Brought back bad (but good) memories. I was back on the transplant floor. Seeing all the old nurses made it feel and little too much like home. Glad to have them back when I needed them. Im doing great. Going to slow down and be a little more cautious with fast food and going out to stores. As I told Tex, you only have to slap me once. Take care, Pam

Doreen. So glad you posted. Have been so worried about you. Seems if I remember correctly, you had trouble getting your counts up after your induction? But then you didnt get stem cells either. Praying you will engraft soon and be feeling much better. Glad they are giving you TPN. Keep the faith. In my prayers daily. Im in the hospital right now with infection. Doing good though. Hope to go home on Friday. Take care.

Lots of protein and they do taste good. Put them on lots of ice. Hang it there. You are doing great. Beware of those mouth sores. Are you counts taking a dive yet. Hi Doreen .. it's great to keep getting your updates .. and I'm happy that we have been "staying in touch". Now .. you are "poised" .. and set for the "final" approach to the runway .. that is labeled "100% recovery". Yes .. you can encounter some turbulence prior to touchdown .. but your ongoing positive attitude, built in drive, physical strength, and spiritual beliefs will ensure a safe landing. Always Keep the Faith .. and keep looking toward the Future .. it's there !!

OK, Just checked and you are there!!! Been around Dinkytown today? And where the students hang out? Before long, I hope and pray you can hang out there too!! You can be a student too if you want too -- Maybe even ride in on the Harley!! You can show them what you can do!!
I just have this great security feeling that God is going to take care of you!!!!!!!!!!! I can't but HE CAN! What He has done is my husband's life is MORE THAN A MIRACLE. What He has done for others, He can do for you!
My Mother had a heart attack in 1999, at the point of death. When I got to the hospital, I told her, You are going to be allright but you have got to be tuff. Honey, tuff, she was!! Women know they have to be tuff!! I am glad your son and brother are with you. I wish there was something I could do to help you but I do know one thing, I can pray for you and that I am doing.

Doreen. Hey. Before you know it you will have this under your belt. Sometimes that fear of the unknown is worse than anything you may have to battle. Email me with the type of conditioning chemo. If you are getting busulfan I want to let you know that I didnt have any problems with that. If you are getting cytoxin, you most likely will get kinda sick with that, but its only for two days. Expect headache and nausea/vomiting. I also had bad jaw pain but thats what they have those good drugs for. LOL You may get tingling or numbness around your mouth...I just had the jaw pain. Dont want to scare you but want you to know what to expect so you know its normal and will stop when the chemo stops. You go into the hospital on Tues and I have my 100 day bmb that day. I believe that a girl named Mia will also go into the hosptial for cord blood transplant that day. You two can celebrate together. If you dont have her web site let me know and I will send it to you. Will keep you in my prayers. Its all ultimatly in Gods hands. Your life is all planned out already so try not to worry. Will continue to pray for you for strengh and endurance and peace. Love ya

Doreen. That kinda aggravates me when you said they only gave you 1/2 of the red blood cells you needed. I guess they have never had low hgb and how bad you can feel with it. That one day I went in and needed both blood and platelets and they only had time for platelets, I ended up in ER, feeling like I was going to lose conciousness. My hgb had dropped to 5.3. I have never felt so bad throughout this process till then. Glad you got your tests out of the way and now we wait for results. Nerve racking isnt it. Keep strong. It will be over before you know it. Doreen. Im so glad you are gonna get this transplant underway. The fear of the unknown is so much worse than the transplant itself. I can hardly believe that I have already done this. I have been so blessed with not getting any major complications. Tex talked about survivors guilt. I have that sometimes. Seems silly but I do. I continue to pray that you will have a easy time with this and complete healing. Good luck with the tests coming up. Had my 100 day muga today and will have bmb Aug 9th and pulmonary functin tests on Aug 8th. Can't believe that 100 days is almost here. Keep that journal updated as me and so many others check it daily. Feel so bad for Julie. I wish someone would enter something. AT least the step mother has commented on the LLS bulletin board. Doreen. Don't get discouraged when your counts get way up and you feel real good and you have to think of doing this all over. I know I did. I felt so good when we took that cruise...felt kinda sadistic allowing myself to be taken down again, but thats just the way it has to be...How you handling the bald head! LOL. Mine is as slippery as it can be. Did you get a wig? When I wear mine and put on my make-up you would never know I was sick. The doctor walks in and wants to know which one of us is the patient! LOL Went to Ann Arbor today. All but chromosome studies back on bmb....In the DnA studies the result studies stated the presence of donor cells only. whoo hoo. Anyway. Hope you are having a good day. Doreen, I have tried so hard to get messages to you over the past too many days, and my computer or me are just dumb, or a combination of both. Now that you have a shaved head I want to tell you what a friend did when she lost her hair.(Maybe this is a repeat - I have no idea.) Anyway, she had her chemo and instead of buying wigs or turbans, she put a fake tatto on the back of her head! The guys with shaved heads (the style for many men these days) gave her a thumbs up when she walked on the beach with her husband. Problems can always be solved with a sense of humor. You have to have one. I'm a friend of your goofy sister and her husband. Prayers still coming your way, Maggie & Dick

Auntie Doreen, So happy to see that you are focusing on having a Positive Mental Attitude about all of this. All of your journaling has really made me focus on everything that I have available to me...everytime you write about wishing for the sun, wanting to stand in the rain, the trees, the flowers...I find myself breathing in deeper, looking around me, looking above me and really absorbing all I have in my surroundings. It is true, you don't realize what you have until you can't have it for awhile... Soon it will all be in your hands again, and day after day you will love life all the more because of this journey. I am glad Margy is with you. She is a second mother to me, and I love her dearly so give her a kiss for me! ~ Thinking of you always, Melissa

Hi Doreen -
Debbie said you were wondering about our friend Dale's leukemia and the miracle pill he is on. He has a leukemia called Chronic myelogenous leukemia. The drug that Mayo has put him on is GleeVec. He is having luck with it, which is wonderful, as he is too old for a transplant. So at least you have that going for you right now. I am sure it is very hard, but I know how strong-willed you are and you WILL make it through this. Keep thinking positive.

Dale's drugs cost him $5000/month, so that is a really big burden for him and his wife. They just recently retired and live up here near us between Bemidji and Grand Rapids. About 6 hours from Rochester.

Well, Doreen, I will keep you in my prayers and know that God has a plan for you. Just keep trusting Him, because His plan is the "perfect" plan for all of us.

I hope you have a blessed Mother's Day with your beautiful son, Mark!! God Bless!!

COURAGE: the attitude of facing & dealing with anything dangerous, difficult, or painful instead of withdrawing from it.
PATIENCE: perseverance in performing a task: the will to endure.
HOPE: a feeling that what is wanted will happen.

These are traits I know you possess....let's throw them all together and get this thing!! They don't call me the "wicked witch" for nothing. xoxox

Well Doreen you are on your way. Hope your Hickman didnt hurt too bad. You will be surprised how much your platelets will go up with just one transfusion. I would go from 7000 to 59,000. What is your chemo order?? I think you will be surprised on how well you tolerate it. In my prayers

Hi Doreen.... I just want to wish you all the strength and stamina as you start your treatment. Keep your sights on the end goal and remember that you have LOTS of friends and family behind you on this. We are all saying lots of prayers and have nothing but positive thoughts flowing on your behalf. I just got back from a month in Texas with my Dad, so I was not able to visit before your big appointment. However, I will make up for that once you feel up to having a bit of company. Again, lots of strength and hope. Robyn

Hi Doreen, just wanted to say .. Thank You for keeping everyone one so informed .. you have done an awesome job of that ! As you begin this stage of your treatments, I just wanted to say again that you have been doing so well in keeping a positive attitude, which as you know, is very important. Now it's time to place special focus on your ultimate destination (100% recovery). The bumpy road you will be on for a while, is a path that will get you there, to once again realize that smooth highway that you can walk on .. drive your car .. or cruise that Harley :-)! Take care .. as you have great friends and family for support, that have you in their thoughts and prayers .. big time ! Good Luck young lady !

Hey Doreen. So chemo starts Monday. Good. Lets get this going. Its weird that your blasts are only 6% and it effects your platelet production. Be prepared for ALL your counts to drop. You will have to be transfused with Red cells and platelets before its over. Just be as careful as possible when the counts are down that you dont catch an infection like I did. Who knows how I got it. It could have been a hang nail. Even that can cause infection when your immune system is so compromised. But it is so cool once they clear out your blasts how your bone marrow kicks in and starts to produce normal cells on its own. Mine is there now, but we are destroying it as we speak. Anyway. You will probably get "induction" meds..7 days of ara-c and 3 days of daunarubicin (big red). I did not have any sickness from any of it and you probably wont either. I just got the rash on 6th day. Good luck. Keep us posted. So far I have not been sick and slept like a baby last night. I think I just had the first night jitters! Love ya Pam

As I am here in Texas with my Dad, my thoughts and prayers go out to you... Everything I read from your journal and your friends comments confirms my feelings... you can beat this.... You are going into this all with a healthy mindset and attitude... I wish you nothing but TONS of fighting power as you start through this whole process. Just never lose sight of the end goal... That alone will help you through all the tough times.

Hi Doreen. I pray God's hand be upon you each day all day long. Tho your body is hurting and your mind is swirling with thoughts & fears, know that your in your spirit is where faith, hope, love, and peace live and your spirit tells your mind, ministers to your mind, these things to not only help you endure, to get thru, but to strengthen you. These are called trials of faith, not of our choosing of course, but to grow in faith in Him.
HOLD FAST, HOLD ON! WE NEED YOU!
Love you, Greg
