Maya,
What a surprise to see on the Tri-Family List that you have a daughter with T-18. I'm so glad that you answered the call to people from Minnesota to respond. I love to keep up on the CaringBridge pages for my trisomy friends so thank you for including that in your post.
I do watch WCCO news all the time, so I have seen you reporting. Now, I'm making an extra effort to get to know you.
You have a darling, precious little girl!
Thanks again,

I love the pic of Mieko on her tricycle. She looks so happy! Morgan has a tricycle, too. He pedals it really hard (likes to go fast), but he won't hold on and he doesn't look where he is going.

Have a good time at the state fair. Try to stay cool. It's not that easy these days. It is too bad it will take so long for Mieko to get her new wheelchair, but you will like it. Can't wait to see pics of her first day of preschool.

Hello. A friend of mine directed me to your web site and I have read in part what you have been going thru with your precious daughter. I have personal knowledge of Trisomy 18, as well as other genetic disorders and am expecially interested in helping ALL children!

I work with people who endorse what is called complementary medecine...that is using natural, healthy substances along with medical. In many cases, healing is accelerated and/or drug amounts reduced. We have found out that glyconutrients (supplements based on the science of GLYCOGIOLOGY) are especially beneficial for genetic problems. We are helping three Trisomy children right now and are in touch with a doctor doing research using glyconutrients.

The human body needs certain substances, expecially for immunity, as found in breast milk, that are not abundant in the average diet. When simply adding what is needed, the body is better able to function as the Creator intended.

I realidy offer information to anyone...whether ill or interested in prevention....at NO OBLIGATION. I can send by email or 'snail' mail! Please check out the information at www.glycoinformation and my web page at www.mannapages.com/oneabbott. Or feel free to call me at 402-254-7202.

I personally use glyconutrients myself as well as our children and 10 grandchildren! For more technical information and journal articles, see www.glycoscience.org. Blessings, Linda

Wow she looks so great so cute in her little dress. When they do the scope ask if taking out her adenoids and uvula will help, a few years ago kayden was doing the same thing and we new he had sleep apnea but we did not know how bad till he too was needing o2 in the day so they did a sleep study at stpaul, because they have a sleep lab there and it is more accurate then what Minneapolis had to offer any way it showed 91 eppisodes a hour while asleep wow that's is allot. so they removed his adenoids and uvula and now the only time he has any signs of apneia are when he is sick other wise its so low they dont even consider it to be a problem. just a idea hers could be something way different but thought i would through something else at you to ask about. hope all goes well.
love ya all and think of you often.

My name is Marla. Our daughter was recently diagnosed with trisomy 6p. Maizie is nine years old. We adopted her at birth and have been struggling to find an answer all this time. Reading your journal reminded me so much of our daughter's health issues. She has been in the hopsital many times for lung infections, asthma and dehydration. Please vist my blog at www.marlabaltes.blogspot.com to read more about our story. Maizie was diagnosed with almost everything other than a genetic disorder. I feel sad we did not force testing earlier. Her seizures were not diagnosed until she was six despite going to four neurologists. I am touched with your story and hope you continue to share your daughter's challenges and triumphs. I only recently began sharing ours and really wish I would have started a long time ago.

Well i finally found your sight,im glad she is home now i called when we came down for our sleep study and you had left the day before. I pray everyone stays healthy now and no more hospital stays.
Kayden had ammonia 2 weeks ago but did very well thank god. i got a call today from the sleep Dr and he said kaydens study went very well, he said it is a time to celebrate as he has no real showing of apnea, now 3 years ago he had 90 an hour, but they removed the adenoids and uvula, we only had them retest him due to the 2 spells of stop breathing he did on us a month ago. I guess this proves my theory on i think he aspirated and choked. Praise the lord for no apnea and pray he continues to do well health wise no more spells we pray. His tummy muscles are getting so strong he just goes from laying to sitting in a second and he is now using a electric wheelchair how fun that is he knows that when he pushes the joystick it makes him go go go, now we need to practice on driving it, this will take some time but he loves it. His walking all depends on him some days he will take many many steps and others only a few he is stubborn and he too will shake his head when he has had enough of what ever we are doing. he is working on losing his 4th tooth freaky considering his airway but i'm trying to watch close so i can pull it out last one i found him chewing on it. The Dr knocked them loose last year during surgery and the 2 first came out about 3 months ago and have made the one around loose so yep soon he will be toothless i tell him.ha ha. well i hope to talk to you soon, we need to get these two together as it seams they are the two active and on the go.
always, Marta

Dear Shawn and Maya,
I just learned today of Mieko and her incredible perseverence to overcome many great challenges. As a mother of 3, a grandmother of 8, and a "teacher" of 22,000, I can only speculate about the great challenges that the two of you face together.

Know that all three of you are now on my prayer list. God will not let me forget to pray for all of you.

With sincere care and support,

Dear Maya,
You have a beautiful little girl, and you and your family's strength and courage is admirable and inspiring. Although I can't imagine the extent of what you've gone through, I do have some understanding, because when he was 9 months old, we found out my son Gavin (born 12/14/04)had an arachnoid cyst in his brain and hydrocephalus. Since then he had to have two carniotomies and finally had a shunt put in to drain the fluids from his brain into his tummy. He'll have the shunt the rest of his life, but he is doing fabulously now. However, I remember so clearly all those days and nights in the hospital by his crib (I was actually in the crib with him some of the times!). I hope I get to see you again soon, and meet Meiko - she's a little angel. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Maya,

Ed and I can't tell you how often we think of you and your family and how often Mieko is included in our prayers. She is a remarkable girl which one would only guess she would be with such remarkable parents. I can't begin to imagine how challenging this journey has been but I also know incredibly rewarding each day is. A reminder for all of us to value each day and take nothing for granted. Please know you will remain in our prayers.... Ed and Kathy Heil

HI MAYA!

I've just visited your page again, and viewed all the pictures of Mieko, she's so lovely! My little girl has Trisomy 21 (standard Down syndrome), and in my opinion, these are the most precious children in this world! With odds that stand against them from the beginning, it's particularly wonderful to see them overcome the hurdles that everyday life throws their way.

The best to you and your family, and I hope to meet Mieko at the reunion picnic (that is, assuming you're going) and give her a biiiiiig hug!!! :o)

See you soon!

Mieko ~
I am SO glad to see that you are doing so well and having a wonderful summer!! I always knew that everything would work out for you and I pray you have best life possible. I know you already have the right parent's to bring that to pass.

Mr. Johnson ~
By far my favorite teacher EVER! i Hope u still remember me.. LOL. Anywho I haven't stopped by this page in a while so I thought I would. I took a year off of school to work at Marshall Fields to save money (mostly bc I was afraid to start COLLEGE already) But you were right, it was a pretty dumb idea, I am glad however that I didn't get sucked into that North Hennepin habbit everyone else seems to be in. Nevertheless I can't wait to be back in school. I'll be leaving for Mississippi this August to go to Tougaloo College. You might not be familiar with it, it's a private school so it's rather small. Well I've rambled enough. Have a great day!! and tell your wife I said hello!

Dear Maya,
I was very glad to hear that the botox is working so well for Mieko! Sounds like you are staying very busy with P.T. and ballroom dancing (what fun). I hope you can find the time to bring Mieko over for a visit, we keep our pool at 82 but can bump it up for Miekos visit. I think she may also enjoy our basset hounds Otis is 9 and Jasper is 5.

I was so glad to hear that you have been feeling good. It is wonderful to hear your pulling yourself up. Summer in Minnesota is the best part of a kids life! I hope you have a wonderful time at the lake this weekend!! Don’t forget your water shoes, sunscreen & bug spray.
You are such a precious little angel!
Keep Smiling!

Dear Maya,
Sounds like you have been busy as ever with doctor appointments & PT! Mieko looked like such a big girl in her new gait trainer. It sounds like you have a wonderful weekend planned, sand between the toes and water temps will be a big change for Mieko. Please know that you are very welcome to a play date at my house anytime!

Dear Mieko,
You look like such a big girl in the pool. You have a very pretty swimming suit!
Wish the swallowing was going better for you. The baby birds on my porch and in my lilacs aren’t having any problems swallowing, they keep their mommies very busy.
You are such a precious little angel!
Keep Smiling!
God Bless!

Dear Maya,
Mieko looks so relaxed in the swimming pool pictures! I think it would take a ton of pressure off her hips and spine. The buoyancy of water is one of those special little miracles from God.
I was sorry to hear that things didn’t go so good with the speech therapist and the swallowing, maybe something that would dissolve like cotton candy or ice-cream (neither of which are healthy) but may get her started on the right track.
I keep you all in my prayers!
God Bless you all!

Mieko,

I’ve looked at your picture, Mieko, and can tell that you are a beautiful young girl who is going to grow into a woman full of grace and truth. I pray that God will keep His hand upon you and use you for all He created you for.

Never forget that you are made in the image of God and have a dignity and beauty that is unaffected by the circumstances of your life. Your parents have a wonderful testimony as to how you came into this world; and I dare to believe that the time will come when you yourself will have a wonderful testimony.

God bless you, dear Mieko.

Dear Mieko,
The picture of you in the snow is absolutely adorable! You look so happy and care free!
The picture of you with your mommy and daddy is also wonderful! A keepsake for sure.
I hope you adjust well to your new brace; it looks like it weighs as much as you. It will all be worth it in the long run. It sounds like you and your mommy and daddy are having a good time at your baby ballroom dancing class.
I hope you have a Wonderful, Peaceful Christmas and enjoy all that this magical season has to offer.
Keep Smiling!
God Bless!

Dear Maya,
It must be incredible hard to watch all the struggles that your little princess has to endure. Hopefully they can do something with her new back brace to make it more workable for her. You don’t need the skills she has already acquired to start going backwards. Hope that all the snow we’ve received hasn’t caused any cancellations for all her doctor appointments. I would be nice to get through them before the holidays.
I hope you and your family have a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year!
I keep you all in my prayers!
God bless you all!

Mieko's smile must light up the room. What a sweetie. Maya I know your heart just melts whenever she smiles at you. How could it not? Having someone so very wonderful who only needs you to be there to be happy. Isn't that just the best feeling? I check this site every few days, looking forward to another photo of Mieko. She makes me grin every time and your journal tells me of such strength and love (hers and yours). You and Shawn are obviously wonderful parents. You are in my thoughts. Thank you for sharing your beautiful daughter with those of us who are too far to watch her grow in person.

Dear Maya,
I was glad to hear you all had an enjoyable time at the fair. I guess I’m with Mieko when it comes to the vantage point at the fair, (think about the differences.)
Backpack- moving objects, bright lights & maybe a breeze
Stroller- thighs, butts & maybe some dust.
Mieko is a unique little girl, she is her own person. Her personality and physical exceptions make her who she is. I believe that Love can help make a lot of exceptions in unique cases like Miekos. It is so easy to tell that Mieko is a very loved little girl!
Keep up the good work! Many prayers for continuing progress!

Hope you get a chance to see all the baby animals; they are all so sweet, just like you. You are the most precious little girl!

Dear Maya,
Hope your all getting some rest; all the changes with Mieko must take its toll. With any luck at all the Hewson brace will only be a short-term thing. I believe back in the olden days (25 years ago) they double diapered babies that had this condition.
Hope you all have a wonderful time at the state fair & the rest of summer!
I keep you all in my prayers!

Hi guys,

I've been checking in on Mieko's site since the story ran and just wanted to say hi! What a miracle child she is! My daughter was born with a rare genetic syndrome (even more rare than T-18, it has only occurred 4 times in the world). When I was pregnant, my doctor discovered multiple birth defects and she thought it was Trisomy 18, giving an automatic death sentence. I want to show her Mieko's web site now so she can see that trisomy 18 babies live - and THRIVE!

I wanted to share that my daughter also had subluxation of the hips, or bilateral developmental displasia of the hips, and she was in a body cast for 6 weeks and has been in a hewson brace for almost 4 months now. She used to wear it 24 hours a day and now we're just down to nights (whewww!). She tolerates the brace pretty well and I hope Mieko does well with it too!

Congratulations on being such wonderful, loving parents and for providing a rich and nurturing environment for Mieko to grow in. I keep you all in my prayers!

Dear Mekio,
You are a beaufiful little girl! You look like such a big girl standing up by yourself. I love your little bare feet in your current pictures:)

Dear Maya,
So glad to hear Mekios therapies are including mobilization, I think all babies go through a stage of frustration before they can get around on there own.
Have they started Mekio on the anti-seizure wean yet? Or made any other prescription changes? Some of those prescriptions can be life altering (emotionally.)

What a beautiful story! On 5/16/05 my sister gave birth to a full-term/full Trisomy 18 baby boy. They named him Noah Nisan(meaning miracle). He only lived 3 days. He was a beautiful baby boy, and such a blessing to our family. My sister recieved the shocking news in her 6th month of pregnancy. We were in such pain, like you the doctors gave them no hope for a live birth. Little Noah had other plans though. It was such a joy to meet him. We miss him so. Your story will bring hope to so many people who have decided to carry to term. May God Bless and keep you all!

What a beautiful little girl you have! As I was watching TV a couple of days ago I saw the previews for your upcoming news story. Right away I new I had to watch that story but I wasn't sure exactly why. Well, now I know. We had a baby boy born 13 years ago with T18. He lived for only 28 days. We also have 4 other kids. Three are healthy but our baby Luke who was born last November spent 3 months in the NICU at Fairview with many problems, including reflux and g-tube feedings and respiratory issues and apnea requiring monitoring and oxygen. Luke also has a caring bridge website. It's www.caringbridge.org/mn/lukejoseph. Our son Brandon who had T18 has a website also. It's http://remembering_brandon.tripod.com. I just wanted to let you know how much Mieko's story touched me. It sometimes helps me to know that we're not alone with all of our problems. I'm so happy that Mieko has been such a success story and that she's bringing you so much joy. She really is beautiful!

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful, uplifting story about your little girl. Your courage and positive attitudes were very helpful to my wife and I as we also have a special needs child. Maya and Shawn, Thank you so much for sharing your story with Mieko. We became familiar with your story on the Trisomy 18 Support Website. Our son Colm was born a week after Mieko, but unfortunatley, he was stillborn. We are so appreciative that you shared your story, as it is so important the people understand that a diagnosis such as T18 is not always terminal, and that these wonderful babies such as your daughter (and our son) can bless our lives. We pray that she continues her wonderful, miraculous journey.

Shawn, I knew you had a child with a genetic disorder, but I had no idea as to what the severity of it was. I did a quick journal history and could relate to a lot of the same issues. I love all of our therapists and doctors, but it is exhausting having to see them as much as we do. Constantly making medical decisions can be overwhelming. If you ever need to talk, e-mail me. I've been doing this for 6 years now.

I took a leave for the remainder of the year. Things were starting to fall apart for Wyatt and I couldn't keep going on 4 hours of sleep.

Maya, It was so great to see you Friday night. We have been praying for Mieko since we found out you were pregnant and that you had some serious issues. I am so glad to finally see pictures of her. I can't thank you enough for your openess and sensitivity for my friend Kathleen. I have passed along your name and information for her to do with what she feels comfortable. Thank you for opening your heart to her. We will continue to pray for you and your family.
