Eileen,
That poem brought tears to my eyes. I know how hard it must be for you to wish Mary could talk and do things like "normal kids" do. I often wish that of Kylie too. But then I think of poor Caroline, and the little girl who lives down the street from us. She was born with a severe brain injury and has little brain function. She has a feeding tube, can't sit up, hold up her head or even acknowledge the fact that some one is talking to her. I cheer every thing that Mary and Kylie can do. They are still with us on this earth and bring such joy and happiness to so many people. They don't know that they are any different than any one else and they are so happy to be alive and love and accept everyone they meet with open arms and a smile on their face.

Mary -
I'm sorry your EEG was so stressful, but I'm glad it was only a short one and you had a quick seizure for them. Hopefully the Vigabatrin will get rid of those seizures that are trying to interrupt your fantastic progress. We're so proud of you - 13/15 pictures! Woohoo!!! Can't wait to hear more about all the great things you're doing! Hope you had a good time trick-or-treating last night.

Jim & Eileen - Thank you for sharing 'Making Lemonade' - no words, other than that permanent smile and charm of Mary's will never dwindle. After 14 years, Ethan still lights up every room. :)

Hello Hable's,
Happy Halloween to you and your sweet Mary. I loved the essay Jim wrote. As a family with another child with TS I can honestly say many of the same things. Kylie also has a profound effect on people. God has made them to be remarkable, happy children, with so much love in their hearts. They do bring out the best in people. Thanks to you both for all of the work you do on behalf of the TS Alliance. Hopefully someday a cure will be found so no other child has to suffer like Kylie and Mary.

Hello Eileen and Mary! I just stopped by to see how your summer is going. It sounds like it is a busy time!! I am relieved and thankful to hear that Mary is OK after being thrown off of the horse! What a scary thing for her...and her grandparent's. As the old saying goes, I hope she is able to "get right back up" there without any fear.

Hi Eileen,
I am so sad thinking about the Beechers and poor Jess. I also feel sad for Maria and you and the other moms of the 7940 group. You are an amazing group of women who are dealing with so much. I hope you continue to support each other and help each other through these difficult times. It just hits so close to home when a child dies from a seizure. We want to think it couldn't happen to us, but then are reminded it can happen to anyone. I pray this doesn't happen to anyone else in your group. If it does, I know you will be there to support each other. Hope Mary is doing okay.

Hi Jim and Eileen
I don't know why I don't sign your guestbook more...I check it often. Ok...I do know...I'm too lazy =) I'm signingg today for a couple of reasons. We got Ian a jogging stroller last year. I agree..it's huge. His holds up to 150lbs, which is good since he is at 60lbs already. We used the stroller all last summer and love it!!! You'll love yours too. I'm amazed at the details of the stroller like shocks on the wheels. I thought it was going to be big and heavy but it's tons easier to push than a regular stroller. I bet yours is a lot like ours. The other reason is that we are wanting to get Ian to see Dr. Lee. Carol (bless her heart) said to just call the clinic and tell them Ian is with the clinic without walls and they'll schedule us. Of course, that didn't happen. I remembered reading a while back that you went through the same run around getting the appt. Take care!!!

Just read your most recent entry and I noticed that the daycare child-adult ratio must be 1 to 6. Be glad you don't live in South Dakota! The ratio here for 3 and 4 year olds is 1 to 10. That's right! One adult for every 10 children! I pray that things will settle down for Mary and she will have all good days. Many prayers from South Dakota!

Happy New Year to all of you. I can't believe how Mary has grown. I'm at Sarah's and saw this page in her favorites and thought I would take a moment to say hi to you and tell you how beautiful Mary is. It's hard to believe how long it's been since we've seen you. Isn't that a blessing? There was a time I thought the unit was home. Jessi is doing so well I can't hardly believe that she has gone through what she has gone through. May all the kids become stable and stay that way. Have a blessed new year and know that you are all in my prayers and I think of you often.

Hi Eileen, Jim and Mary,
Thanks so much for all of the love, care and support you have given Neil and Maria these past few months. The visits and phone calls have meant so much to Maria. Every time I see Mary, I can see her making so many strides. She is also so sweet. I don't want Kylie to go through the pain of surgery, but if that is the only way to help her, we will have to let them do it. Again, thanks so much, you are good people.

We will put you and your sweet little girl on our prayer list. It is so sad that these children have to go through this - they are all so sweet and innocent. The pictures of Mary are so cute, cherish every moment with her.

Hi Eileen,
I agree that is very unfair for these poor kids to have those nasty seizures and TS. Although it makes us feel bad, it doesn't seem to make the kids upset ( at least not Kylie) she usually is fine right away. I do believe that God has a plan for each of us and our children. I believe the TS kids are angels on earth teaching people to love and accept them for who they are, and appreciate each special things they can do. Their parents are also special people who care so much for them. I am glad God gave them to you who can handle them and not some drug seeking, bar scene parent who couldn't care less about their kids. Mary, Kylie, Jessi, and the rest of the TS kids I have met have some amazing parents who show us Gods love each day in the way they care for their children. Keep your faith and keep loving that sweet Mary with all your heart. Who knows what her future will hold. She has an amazing spirit and is so lucky to have you and Jim for parents. It's okay to feel sad and angry from time to time but all you can do is take each day at a time and do your best. Stay strong.

Hi Eileen and Jim,
It must be so disappointing to see Mary having seizures once again. I think about you guys often and read your web page. Did you know there is a pedal trike that has a handle on the back? It allows the parent to push the bike without bending over and killing their backs. I'm not sure who makes it but it should be at Toys-R-Us or Target. That way Mary could pedal and you can stroll along behind her. Take care of yourselves and stay in touch.

Dear Jim and Eileen,
My name is Karen Ueland and I met your sister at the meeting for the walk for TSC. My beautiful 6 month old grand-daughter was just diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis in February and was just released from Children's epilespy unit today after a week stay. She sounds alot like your Mary with a similar story. They are having trouble controlling the seizures and my daughter is so sad and depressed. Our whole world has been turned upside down. It is nice to hear that Mary is doing well. I hope surgery could be an option for Kylie. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't mind writing my daughter, it would be helpful to hear from someone in her shoes. Her caring bridge site is www.caringbridge.com/mn/kylie. She is such a sweetheart as I can see your Mary is.
Thanks,

WHOHOOOOO! Way to go Mary! Love to see when a TS kid is seizure free! It warms my heart and gives me hope that the great miracle drug will continue to help her, Arianna and the many others that are on it right now. Too bad the FDA doesnt see what we see right? BTW, can you let me know about who you use in Amsterdam? Are they cheaper then Canada? How quickly do they ship?
Take care :) We will check on you again soon

What a great smile, Mary! We were so happy that Gramma shelton wrote and told us to check your web site for a new picture and an up-date. Last week we pulled up this site to show your Great Auntie Eileen Harrison all of this information but nothing was new. We will have to get her over here now and have her read the wonderful letter your mom wrote and see your smiling face. She will be very happy. Stay warm. It is very nice in PS and when Gramma and Grampa Shelton come down here I am sure they will bring pictures for all of us. Take good care of your wonderful dad and mom. Love to all of you. Miss Mary, you need to take it easy now (I know that's hard at your age) but you are wearing out Mom and Dad a little. Snuggle up with your kitty and enjoy the Christmas lights. Sorry to hear about your recent trip back to the hospital and glad you made it home for dad to watch the Packers. (Our Patriots got trounced last night) Be well, rest up as you have a VERY BIG day this coming weekend. As many people will tell you when you are older, you are all the present they wanted this year (even more so than the year you were born) so, Christmas morning, put a pretty bow on your head and smile like you never have before. You are one special little girl.

Dear llittle Marybella,
Your ol' Grammy Judy had just a wonderful time visiting you yesterday. I'm glad your Mom had to go to the store so I could baby sit you for a little while. You are such a good cuddler in the rocking chair. We had a good time reading your Christmas books, didn't we? And that silly ol' Chippy cat of yours made sure he got in on the story too, didn't he? You really surprised me when you showed me how you manage to negotiate across the floor on two legs and one arm. You go, Girl!!! I'll bet as soon as you are fully recovered from your surgery, you'll be chasing those cats around the house again. I had lots of fun with you, dear little Mary, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again at Aunt Amy's for Christmas brunch. Grandpa told me today that he just can't wait until you are able to come over and stay overnight like your cousins do. Neither can I. But 'til then, you just keep getting better and better. There are still lots and lots of people who are praying for you. I love you so much it makes me shiver. Love you, Marybella! Your ol' Grammy Judy

Just read the touching letter from Jim, and I do have to say it reduced me to tears. Good thing I am all alone in the office, or others would think I am nuts.
Mary, keep up the great work, truly firsthand I know how hard it is, but you have taken strength from your family and the will of curiosity from within to keep "reaching for those stars", and Mary, KEEP REACHING!.... Every corner you turn is one that several months ago was not a current thought in your parents heads.
Such a scary time, but as soon as your mom and dad saw your sweet smile, I am certain they realized you were always there, just redirected to somewhere else. Remember that every time you take three strides ahead, you will also fall back one at some point, so keep your head into the wind and forge ahead, for we all know there are many wonderful people pulling for you and cheering each and every step, gesture, word and especially every milestone you achieve. Your scar will be less noticable in awhile, as mine is, but you will always know it's there. I now refer to both of mine as "2 free face lifts", and don't think about them too often. Mary, you don't realize it yet either, but what you did by having surgery also enables the doctors and nurses who worked with you to more fully understand the disease you have also, thereby you are assisting with other children to come. Love your doctor with all your heart as she is an angel in disguise, and give all the hugs you can to both mom and dad until you make them cry. You are their best Christmas present this year for sure. Keep up the great work, and keep your spirits soaring. REACH FOR THOSE STARS.......

Dear Loveable Mary,
TODAY'S YOUR MOMMIE'S BIRTHDAY, HURRAH, HURRAH!
I know being home with you must be the best birthday present she could get this year. She told me you are trying hard to get around with your "wobbly arm" and I know you'll get it all figured out in due time. You are a strong and courageous little girl. For now, though, just enjoy being in your house with your favorite toys and your kitties and your Mom and Dad. I'll bet Daddy is playing Christmas songs on the piano for you. Dear Mary and Jim and Eileen,
It was so GOOOOOOD to see all of you yesterday. (And it's so good to be over the flu so I could again be there). And were we surprised to see Mary without her "turban". Mary, I swear you have gotten two inches longer since I last saw you just before THanksgiving. I'm sorry you weren't too perky while we were there but when little girls have a fever, sometimes they just feel crumby. But your Daddy told me that the fever was gone by this morning and I'm so glad to hear that. Wasn't it nice, Mary, that Mom and Dad's friends, John and Trish, came to visit just before we got there? Grampa and I thought it was a really good idea that they all went for lunch at Cossettas'. WE GOT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH YOU AND WE DIDN'T HAVE TO SHARE YOU. You are so cuddly to hold and read books to and sing songs to. We did a good job with Jingle Bells, didn't we? And you are great on the tambourine!!!! Grampa was thrilled that you opted to look at the Packer Game on TV while he was watching it (instead of reading the book with me). Even when you don't feel well, you are the sweetest little Marybella in the whole wide world and you will always tickle my heart. I love you so much. You are a very special little girl and have been an amazing inspiration to all of us whose lives you touch. Pretty soon you will be going home to sleep in your own bed and play with Chippy and Sophia. And before we know it you will be chasing them up the stairs again. Grampa and I are still saying prayers for you so you get better quickly and can come and visit us again. I have a new bubble blower and big batch of bubbles that I'm saving just for that day. Jim and Eileen, we are looking forward to your coming over and maybe taking time to go get a good massage from the lady with the magic hands and Mary and I can fill the house with bubbles. Dad and I are in awe of all three of you and how you have handled this leg of your life's journey. I thank God for all of you. GROUP HUG!!! Love, Mom/Judy/Grammy

Good morning beautiful Mary, Mom and Dad, I read your Daddy's report this morning Mary and it brought back again the terrible day everyone went through. Your Aunt Jenny kept me updated throughout the day but I wish I had been able to be there to give you a kiss. Our world is bright again because you are done with surgery and it went so well. I was a bit surprised that your Daddy wondered that he and your Mommy had the kind of strength to go through all this because I think the fact that they decided to go ahead with this for you took the most amazing amount of strength of all. How you are loved and God blessed you with such a wonderful Mommy and Daddy, and we are all blessed to have you in our lives. I love you to bits and will never stop praying as you continue to get well and beyond. All my love, Aunt Eileen

Mary, Eileen, & Jim,
I remember how much I looked forward to reading the greetings in the caringbridge guestbook when Kaylee was in the hospital. It seemed to make the hospital stay a little more pleasant. Please know that our prayers continue for you & your family through this very difficult time. Just remember, "this too will soon pass"!! Mary, you have taught us all more than you can ever know about love, strength, hope, faith, and the power of prayer! God be with you...

Jim and Eileen,
I understand Mary didn't have her test Tuesday after I left. I know you have to be bummed out about it but keep the faith. Everything does or doesn't happen for a reason and we can only hope that it was a good reason. Dad and I are both praying that the docs and all their "helpers" will be able to finish Mary's tests in time for Monday's surgery. I was going to call this afternoon but thought better of it in case you were all in the middle of changing dressings or better yet, testing. You can call me if you feel like it. I miss Mary a lot and when I think of her it tickles my heart. She is such an angel and a real trooper. Just like her parents. Eileen, do take care and remember...your goofy mother-in-law reminds you to...TAKE DEEP BREATHS!!!! I love you all, Judy/Mom........Bill, too

Oh! The "Egg Lady" sends the whole family's good wishes to all of you. They have been praying for Mary's recovery.

Hello Jim, Eileen and Mary:
You all are in our thoughts every day and we want to thank you for keeping us updated by this website because even though we can't be there in person for you we can read the journal entries and send our thoughts and prayers back to you this way.
By me even being in the medical field, really nothing can make you prepared for things like this. The pictures really hit your heart and make Jon & I better understand what Mary and you as an entire family must be going thru. We want you to know that we will always be there for you guys, we would like to come visit so if you can let us know if there is anything we can bring....
We can only imagine how much support you have received but just one more little reminder that we love you all! Hope everyone has a Happy Thanxsgiving! (maybe we'll bring some leftover chicken gizzards:)
Hope to see you soon,

Good morning beautiful Mary, Mom and Dad. Just wanted to say hi and that I love you and am thinking about you. Grandma Kate told me Mary that you slept 12 hours in her arms last night. For your Grandma I bet that was the best present in the world except for when you are finally home again and chasing Tommy around the house. I love you all and my prayers are always with you. Jim, Eileen & Mary,
Wanted to wish you an early "Happy Thanksgiving" as we're leaving town tomorrow. When we go back home to WI we share your website and stories with our families, so you have more families praying for your speedy recovery then you know, which is a good thing. You are constantly in our prayers & thoughts. We look forward to looking at the new photos you share with us each day & reading your journal. Eileen-Glad to hear that you was able to sneak away for a night, I know what it's like to set in the hospital looking at the walls, watching someone you love so much but nothing you can do for them. We seen the sunshine in days, must have been after Mary smiled for her first time since surgery. Mary-you are our sunshine! Keep the great updates coming, and we look forward to Mary's full recovery and seeing here again soon :-) God bless you all!

Hello my little Marybella! When Grampa and I left you last night at the hospital, you looked like a little angel with a beautiful puffy white turban on your head...fast asleep in Daddy's arms. Once in a while, you opened your beautiful blue eyes, looked around, and smiled at everyone and went back to sleep. Yesterday was a really crumby day for you but Grampa and I hope today will be a little better. You are an amazing little girl with all those wires coming out of your head and the TV camera aimed at you all the time. Grown-ups would have a hard time dealing with that, but you are so brave, you make all of us proud of you. We love you so much and will come to see you again when you are feeling like looking at other people. Now it's important that you have your Mommy and Daddy with you. And of course, Grandma Kate who takes such good care of you. Lots of people are praying many prayers for you. Your special angel is watching over you, too. The pictures of Mary after her surgery were so sad. What trials that little girl has already gone through. She is lucky to have such loving parents....and such a wonderful supportive family. Hi Jim, Eileen and Mary. Just wanted to let you know we're all praying for you. I'm amazed at how good Mary looks even with her turban. Doesn't look like much swelling. Something that occurred to me when I was looking at the pictures. If Mary doesn't have lots of IV's and the hospital says it's o.k. bring her own pajamas to wear. It's more comforting and gives them more privacy. Amanda always likes to wear her own as soon as she can after surgery. Addie and Amanda are anxious to see how their cousin Mary is doing.

Just wanted to let you guys know that you are all in our thoughts as Mary goes through surgery. She is an absolute doll, and only the best is in store for her. Hi little one. Just wanted to come and say hi and tell you Im sending lots of prayers and thoughts your way :) Mom and Dad, TS is just a sucky thing to have, no matter what way you try to look at it, but Ive found that when you look into your childs eyes wondering what to do, wondering if you are doing the right thing, hopeing this will be what helps your child, their pure love and innocence brings peace and you almost just have to know that things will be ok. Our daughters are different as far as how Ts has effected them except the seizure aspect and because of her heart surgery right now she isnt a surgical canidate~but know all of your extended TS family is right there w/ you in this journey. Take care

Hi Mary,
You may not remember me but I worked with Daddy at his work. You came to Daddy's work a few times and I met you. When I worked there and was having a sad day, I would go into Daddy's office and sit down in the scolding chair. Your Daddy would reassure me that everything would be okay and to just hang in there. (Daddy's can do that you know.)While sitting there I would look around the room at the hundreds of photos with this beautiful smiling face looking back at me. The face was yours little Mary, and you know I never left his room feeling sad. You are truly the light of Mommy's and Daddy's life. You also make my day whenever I see your smiling face. We all love you mary and are praying for your quick recovery.

Tell mom that I miss e:mailing her with work, but I am sure it is the last thing on her mind right now. You are a great inspiration to many people in your life. Keep up the spirits. Hello dearest little Mary, a couple of years ago when you were but a little baby my husband, my mother and father and myself came and prayed with you and your mom and dad. We were neighbors of Steve and Jacquie Cavanagh. I have since fasted and prayed for you many a days. That the Lord would uphold you and set you free from your seizures. "But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. MALACHI 4:2" There is healing in the wings of Jesus. We will not cease to pray for your healing and restoration.
