Thank you all for your prayers, gifts, and help over the past few years. We -My parents, little brother Lenny and I-cannot thank you enough for everything that has been done for Lenny since he was diagnosed. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

My dad, Lenny, passed away today, Sunday August 9th, 2009. He was 48 years of age.

He lived a long, full life, and loved all those who came to him. I'm positive that he would've made friends with Grumpy the dwarf if it was possible. He was a major cheerleader in mine and my brother's major endeavors, from hockey to violin, from speech team and commencement speaking to hanging with friends and good family members during daylight hours (and a few obscene hours, like midnight movies at the the theater), and from school to freetime in and out of school.

He was a coach, a leader, a father, a friend, a brother, an uncle, a husband, a son, and many other titles besides. He cheered at all the sporting events, hockey, lacrosse, and Special Olympics activities as well. He lived life with flair, and tried to live it to its capacity. I can still remember him as the man who "hung the moon, and scattered the stars," as Mr. Fix-It, the guy his daughter thought could fix anything and everything. He could sing Franki Valli, and Van Morrison better than any of those American Idols, and gave Journey, Rod Stewart, and The Styx a run for their money everytime he started singing one of their songs.

He was the man with a sense of humour, with all sorts of funny stories of his high school and college careers. Even in his sickness, he managed to make someone crack a smile on their face, even if their day was dark and cloudy, and that not even a small ray of sunshine could cut through the darkness.

I will always remember his willing smile, his twinkling eyes, his sense of humour, and his bellowing laugh, something that could possibly be heard for miles and miles. Not to mention his homemade lasagna, which could whip the butt of Cossetta's any day, in my opinion. He gave so much to those he knew and loved, and expected nothing in return. I have a feeling that he long ago earned his wings, and now flies over to the moon, singing "Brown-Eyed Girl," and even "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I doubt that there will ever be another person as welcoming, friendly and fun-loving as Lenny Weiss, my father.

~Maggie Weiss, Daughter~

Very busy week....Lenny went into the hospital on early Friday morning with significant pain and nausea. He is home now and managing the symptoms more successfully.
My mother Joan Donohue, died on early Saturday morning. She lived with Parkinsons Disease for over 25 years and managed the disease pretty well. She had a significant struggle in the past 3 months and knowing now she is resting it still is very sad. Funeral arrangements are pending the first week in August.

Friday, July 3, 2009 1:30 PM CDT

We visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn, to see if there are any clinical trials that Lenny is a candidate for. At this time, they do not have anything for him and so they will “keep him on the list” for any trials that open.

Lenny started an oral chemo at the end of June. He takes this for two weeks and then one week off and repeats the cycle. There is no cure for this cancer and so we are balancing time with quality of life.

We are looking forward to celebrating the Marriage of Lenny’s cousin Bethany Konopinski at the end of July. Bethany’s Mother is Lenny’s Aunt AND her Dad is Lenny’s cousin (on the Weiss side). So there will be lots of relatives from both sides of his family as we celebrate with Bethany and her Groom Anthony.

We are so proud of Maggie who graduated from Hastings High School this spring, We had the honour of being the parents of a commencement speaker! She did a beautiful job and is looking forward to school in the fall at St Catherine University in St Paul.

Please, call Lenny or stop by. He loves visitors and if he is not up for it, he will let you know….
Love, Tara

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 7:26 AM CST

Lenny has finished chemo last week and Monday he started receiving Aredia. This is to treat bone metasases, as I understand this helps to "fortify" the bones due to the chemo that potentially will compromise the bones. This drug is administered once a month through the portal where he received the chemo.

Test results show that the chemo did what they expected it to do. He will be monitored monthly and we hope that the "cancer keeps quiet".

Lenny will return to work this week part time. Check out the previous journal entries and please leave a message in the guest book. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by or call.

Love,
Tara, Lenny, Maggie and Lenny Jr.

Lenny's Dad.....Grandpa Lenny died on Wednesday January 21. We certainly did not expect this, he was preparing to go to work when he had a heart attack.

We honored him on 1-28-09 at St Josephs Church in Miesville along with many friends & family including his two brothers Joe & Bob and His Nephew Chris Weiss from New Jersey. And his cousin Lenny Bruner & his wife Dixie from Ohio. We will miss him.

Saturday, January 31, 2009 9:16 AM CST

Greetings and wishes for the best to you in 2009! We have so much to be grateful for and we have cherished the season… here is an update of the Weiss family in 2008.

Maggie & Lenny have had a very successful school year so far, both keeping on the honor role and keeping busy with extra curricular activities.

Maggie plays violin in the Hastings High School Concertino Orchestra, sings in the choir and continues working on the school newspaper. She has applied to college and will soon make a final decision about where she will go to school next year. After Christmas vacation, Maggie starts practice for the Hastings speech team as team captain & training with the Girls Lacrosse team starts in March.

Lenny Jr. is playing in the nets for the Hastings Bantam hockey team and has a good record! This fall he began preparation for his Confirmation and started High School, He is enjoying this and is doing well. After hockey season ends (I am not sure it really ever ends) he plans to try-out for the Hastings Tennis team and looking forward to Drivers Ed next summer…Yikes.

On March 8, 2008 a group of friends along with the Hastings Hockey Boosters had a fundraiser/celebration for Lenny. We are so grateful to all of you who came to support our family as we finished the second chemotherapy treatment for Lenny. Over 500 people came to this event, which was just amazing. Lenny’s Dad and his brother along with his family were there. All of my siblings, their spouses, and most of my nieces and nephews were with us, as well as many of my cousins and aunts. My Mom and Dad, (Joan & Larry Donohue) also came to this event.

This was the last outing my Dad had. After Lenny finished his treatment and returned to work, I was able to spend more time with my Dad in the end of life care for him. This was a very fulfilling experience. In talking to my Dad, he was amazed at the support we have here in Hastings and he found comfort in this. My Dad peacefully slept away on April 15, I miss him.

In July we had a great trip out east to visit Lenny’s family and friends. We brought Lenny’s Dad, Grampa Lenny. The first day we arrived we met with the Landino Family at Kathleen & Eddie’s house, it was fun for Maggie & Lenny Jr - Jr to meet their cousins! We spent time in Bloomingdale and Butler where Lenny grew up & went to school. We spent a few days at the Jersey Shore where he played in the summers of his teen years, plus a day at Lake Hopatcong, several parties and picnics. We had a fabulous Weiss family reunion in the Catskill Mountains in upstate NY where Grampa Lenny spent many summers and Lenny spent time fishing and hunting in his youth. Not to mention that we had a perfect day for a trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island!

We were so fortunate to have the great host of many relatives and friends to make this a great vacation. My kids learned more about their father and his youth (maybe more than they needed to know). Grampa Lenny was able to spend some extra time with his brothers, Joe & Bob Weiss.

When we returned home, we received news that Lenny’s cancer had returned and he started another 6 months of Chemotherapy treatment. The treatment is quite aggressive, but it appears to be doing what they’d hoped to quiet the cancer cells and to stop new cancer cell growth. We are pleased with this progress and treatment should be done in February. We try to keep regular updates on the Caring Bridge website. Check back for further updates and progress.

Last summer we did spend some time at the lake, swimming, fishing and recreating. See the song written by Lenny Jr, one day while out on the boat!

If you are in the neighborhood…stop by and
Best wishes in 2009.

Love, Lenny, Tara, Lenny & Maggie Weiss

Week 17 - Long treatment week

Lenny is beginning to recover from this most recent treatment. We have 4 more rounds remaining!

The results from a PET scan last week showed nothing new. No new growth. As I understand it, this confirms that the treatment is doing what it is intended to do which is to reduce the amount of cancer cells and stop new cancer cell growth.

Looking forward to better days......

Drop Lenny a line or give him a call!

Love, Tara, Maggie & Lenny

Lenny was disconnected today...he is feeling tired and sick. Keeping a low profile.

Lenny is planning to watch Lenny Jr play hockey this weekend which is probably all he will be up to...

Other than a hockey game We'll be around this weekend. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

Love, Lenny, Tara & kids...

Week 10 - Short treatment week

Lenny is feeling good today...he has a rash which is a reaction to the Erbotux. He is working today.

Lennys Co-worker Jodi drove Lenny to his appointment last week to have the chemo disconnected. She was courious enough to go watch the disconnect. Now I have a witness to how the women there all LOVE Lenny. They take good care of him.....and so do all of you!

We'll be around this weekend doing yardwork and watching hockey. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

Love, Lenny, Tara & kids...

Week 9 - long treatment week

Lenny had a CAT scan last week and we received news that things look good. The chemo seems to be "quieting" the cell growth. This is what we hoped for.

Lenny is watching a ball game right now and dozing in & out of sleep. He really enjoys hearing from everyone. I am still amazed at all the women who still keep in touch with Lenny.........How did he get away? How did I get so lucky!

Give him a call or leave a note....he really does love to hear from you!

Love, Tara, Lenny, Maggie & Lenny Jr.

Week 7 Long treatment week....

Lenny is tired and pretty sick today. The chemo is removed tomorrow (Wednesday) and we look forward to him feeling better by the weekend.

He had hoped to go home (to New Jersey) for Brad's memorial, but he doesn't think being on a plane with the effect of the chemo is a good idea.

He will look forward to seeing people by Thursday or Friday. If he is sleeping he turns off the phone so don't worry about waking him up!

Love,

Tara, Maggie & Lenny Jr...

Monday, September 22, 2008 12:28 AM CDT

Week 6 - short treatment week.

I just brought Lenny home from his treament today. He is sleeping now and should be feeling better this afternoon. On the even weeks he has one drug administered and seems to tolerate this pretty well.

Give him a call or send a note....

Week 5 full treatnment this week.

Lenny finsihed the treatment today and seems to be managing the nausea better this week. He is resting well tonight and talking about what sounds good to eat on SUNDAY....not sure if he thinks he won't feel up to eating until then.

He loves your calls & notes....
Thanks,

Tara, Maggie & Lenny Jr.

Thursday, September 11, 2008 3:34 PM CDT

Week 4 of treatment

Lenny has Chemo every week. The odd weeks ie. weeks 1, 2, 5 etc he has the full treatment over 3 days. He comes home with a small pump that administers the chemo. He has been quite sick during the first two full treatment week.

This week he received the one drug which makes him tired, dopey and gives him a rash from his waist to the top of his head. He has managed this rash pretty well with a prescription ointment.

He is feeling pretty good today and went to work. He will probably be tired! Please give him a call or drop a note....he loves to hear from you!

Love,
Tara, Maggie & Lenny Jr.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 4:38 PM CDT

Lenny started chemo last Tuesday (8-19-08) and had a reaction to the new drug....by the time I talked to him, he had received a good dose of morphine to manage the pain & bring his Blood pressure down. He was happy & lovin everyone!

He was quite sick last week until Sunday from the chemo. Yesterday he had the dose of only the new chemo drug...he responded fine and seems to be feeling pretty good today.

Hello NJ!

We are enjoying a whirlwind vacation in Lenny's hometown of Bloomingdale, NJ.

We arrived Saturday evening and met the Landino's (Lenny's Mothers' family) for a traditional "Macaroni & Gravey with meatballs dinner"....translation: spagetti, meatballs and sauce. It was delicious. We are reminded of what a great cook Lenny's Mom was!

Sunday we toured Ellis Island for 3 hours......then on to the Statue of Liberty. Very interesting! .....We met Hans & Louise Schmidt for dinner....Hans is Grampa Lenny's long time co-worker with the Teamsters. Grampa Len & Hans worked 3rd shift for many years through the company changes when they both retired from Yellow Freight. What good friends they are!

Monday we Met Steve & Rae Smolen & their kids at their farm and then went boating at Lake Hopatcong with Bobby Soules & his family and BBQ at Patty (Soules) & Jimmy Jewitt's house on the lake. A bit of sunburn & very tired! What fun we had.

Tuesday Grampa Lenny went with his Brother Bob Weiss to his house and we packed up & went to the Jersey Shore...Lenny always had great stories of the fun they had...now we know why. It was sunny & hot. We had so much fun playing in the ocean!

Wednesday afternoon after more fun at the beach...we met Lenny's Aunt & Uncles...Joyce & Bill and Marianne & Joey along with Grampa Lenny, Bethany & Joey Albert. We enjoyed a relaxing Seaside Dinner at Bahrs looking over the Atlantic, NJ bay...very nice.

Thursday Lenny is off to play golf somewhere in Sussex county....he got picked up this morning and he could not be in better spirits.

Friday - Sunday we will head to the Catskill Mountains where we will see most of the Weiss Family including 2 Uncles & their families. About 50 will be at the family reunion there.

Sunday Craig and Julie our gracious hosts...will be hosting yet another gathering. We fly home Monday...

Hope to see you all soon!

Tara, Lenny, Maggie & Lenny Jr...

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 1.00 PM CDT

Lenny's chemo sessions our over. Thank Goodness. The PET Scans have been comming back very good. Lenny just has to go in once a month for bone infusions to help his bones get stronger.
Dr. Toonen told us that there is no visible evidence of tumors and that we will monitor Lenny regularly. He will have a PET scan in July and every 3 months after.
So, this will be "managed" kind of like you would manage a cronic disease, although this is not a cronic disease.

We will do our part, with your help by living life to the fullest, prayer, excercise, good attitude, healthy food, positive outlook.

We had so much fun on Saturday. A reflection of Lenny and all those who love him. What a wonderful Man he is...

See you around town,

Lenny started the 4th round of chemo yesterday. He was sleeping when I left the house this morning. He slept well last night so I think he has the nausea managed.

Last night our power went out & thanks to Brian Siebenaler he had the problem diagnosed very quickly. It seems that there is a break in the line from the electrical pole to the house....underground. Neuman Electric will be able to identify where the break is get electricity fully restored today.

Last week we were cutting grass when Roger Otto pulled up with his Son (who has a lawn & snow removal service) and the mowing equipment. What usually takes us several hours.....these guys had done in about 15 minutes.....well maybe it was 45 minutes!

We really appreciate your help! We appreciate everything...rides, prayers, etc

Thanks........

Things have moved fast!

Lenny finished the first round of chemo yesterday and is feeling much better today. It seems that the treatment was quite caustic for him and he did not sleep well until last night.

Treatment includes some of the same drugs as last time which include:
5-FU
Camptosar
Leucorvorin
A new drug to his regiment - Avastin which is for the cancer on his bones and
Aridea which is like Fosomax given to women for osteoporosis....in liquid form which is more direct & effective in preserving bone mass.

Dr. Toonen told us this cancer is Metastatic Colorectal cancer. It is not curable so they try to control it. Data shows that people with this type of cancer respond to treatment
for 16 - 24 months.

So they will give Lenny 12 treatments administered every other week. After 4 treatments, they will do another PET scan to see if this treatment is working or if the cancer is progressing.

Dr. Toonen told us that this is the front line treatment for this cancer.

We will keep you updated.
Lots of love,

Tara, Lenny, Maggie & Little Lenny

This late summer Lenny started having symptoms similar to what he had experienced prior to his colon cancer diagnosis. He has had alot of tests with varied findings and a PET scan last week showed spots on his pelvis, spine and polyps on the spleen & abdomen.

The results from the biopsy done on Friday confirmed that the spots are colon cancer.

Lenny will have the portal reinstalled into his chest on Thursday morning and the chemo will begin on Monday Sept 24.

He will have a similar treatment regimen as three years ago. The chemo will be administered every other week for 6 months.

We will keep you updated with more information when we know more

Hello -

This late summer Lenny started having symptoms similar to what he had experienced prior to his colon cancer diagnosis. He has had alot of tests with varied findings and a PET scan last week showed spots on his pelvis, spine and polyps on the spleen & abdomen.

Lenny will have a biopsy on friday morning (today) to determine if these are colon cancer, kidney cancer or there is a possibility it could be nothing. Lenny's Oncologist Dr. Toonen thinks this is possibly the colon cancer.

We do not know anything further, we should have results from this biopsy on Tuesday. Once they know what these "spots" are, a treatment plan will be prescribed.

We will keep you updated..........

Lenny is still at United Hospital and on clear liquid diet. For as long as I have known Lenny he has never had difficulty passing gas......until now. He can't have solid food until he has gas & cannot be discharged until he has regular food. He will probably be mad that I shared this much info!

So, give him a call or stop by if you are downtown in the neighborhood.....on the way to the Wild game? He is at United hospital room 2646 phone(651)241-7446.

We have not received the pathology results yet. Tara

Lenny had surgery today to remove the kidney on the left side and Dr. Todd Brandt said things went well. When I saw Lenny after surgery he was quite uncomfortable but I left him in good hands with the staff at United Hospital.

He needs to rest tonight & tomorrow and should be ready to start walking on Thursday. I will keep an update of how things are on Thursday and when he would like to hear from you.

Thanks for your prayers and support.

Tara

Good news!

After many tests and several assesments, the consenses is to leave the small tumor on Lenny's kidney alone. Dr. Todd Brandt the Urologist, Dr. Tim Toonen, Oncologist and Dr. Brian Sweeney, the Surgeon believe that is ok to leave the tumor because there have been no changes in over a year.

Lenny will continue to be monitored with CT scans & other screening proceedures for the next 5 years. The portal which was installed in Lennys chest to administer chemotherapy will be removed Thursday May 12.

All of our prayers are working……we couldn’t have done this without everything you all have done.

Lenny is planning a celebration of sorts, sometime in July. Keep an eye on this site for further details…Thanks so much.

Love,
Tara

Thursday, April 14, 2005 11:00 AM CDT

So far everything is going ok. I have been back to work full time since the end of December. I will have surgery to remove the tumor on my kidney in May. We will know more at the end of April, after further tests. I will be in the hospital for 3 -4 days and home for 6 weeks after surgery.

I still have numbness in my fingertips and feet and the
shock I get in my feet every time I bend my head is going away slowly, these are side affects of chemo. Other than that we are keeping busy. Tara is taking good care of me and working full time, preparing for Fall campaign for the United Way of Hastings.

Lenny is playing on 2 hockey teams. A Showcase Peewee B team and he is practicing with a Triple A team as their 2nd goalie. He tried out for traveling baseball but it looks like he didn't make it this year so he'll play "in house" baseball instead which starts at the beginning of June. This will probably work better anyway since I'll be
laid up this summer. Hockey is his first love anyway, must not be his fathers' son. Hockey ends in May and then begins again in July. He starts middle school next fall.

Maggie just finished her Special Olympic (SO) basketball season. SO track and field just started and SO golf starts later this summer. She has a violin duet this spring and she continues taking lessons every week. She also sings in the choir at school. She sang the National Anthem with no music at State Special Olympic Basketball opening ceremionies and did a terrific job. She doesn't take after her Dad either. Maggie will start high school next fall.

I just want to thank all of you for your prayers and wishes. They have kept me going and staying strong. It's been a long road and I still have a little bit to go yet. If you are ever out this way in Minnesota drop in we love company.

Take care and thanks again. You will never know how much it has helped.

Thursday, February 3, 2005 8:30 PM CST

Today we met with Dr. Todd D. Brandt about the tumor on Lenny's Kidney. The tumor has not grown since last march which is good news, but it needs to be removed. At this time, Dr. Brandt has recommended that we wait until Lenny has recovered further from the chemo. He said the tumor can be "lopped off" from the kidney because it is still small enough. He said we want to keep the kidney....in case Lenny ever needs further chemo....its good to have two kidneys.
Typically, this proceedure could be done Lapriscopically however, the colon surgery was quite invasive and caused trauma or scar tissue so they have to remove the tumor surgically and of course the recovery is longer.
So for now....Lenny is in recovery mode and is lookibg forward to participating in YOGA classes with the women at work! We need to whip him into shape!

Give him a call or drop a note......He may even show you his scar!

Wednesday, January 19, 2005 6:03 PM CST

Today, the chemo was unplugged for the last time! Lenny is very relieved to be done. He is feeling sick and is very tired. He keeps going.....he insisted on bringing Lenny (leonardo) to hockey tonight. I think he knows he will feel lousey regardless of what he is doing so he goes out to help pass the time. He is encouraged knowing that he will soon begin to feel better and that this treatment is done.

In Febrary he will have another CT scan and will have further assesment of the kidney. They will determine what course of treatment if any, is needed.

He is very positive. Give him a call or send him a note.....he is ready to celebrate this victory!

Thanks for everything.....
Love,
Tara

My Dad the Man
By Maggie Weiss

I did my character sketch on my Dad. He is a great guy. He looks short and big-bellied, but he has the mind of the smartest person in the world.
My Dad does things and works like no other Dad I know. He has an eastern accent because he was born, and grew up in New Jersey. He likes to sit a lot, but stands most of the time. He likes to stand more than sit. My Dad has nice manners. He is real polite. He is so polite that I think he was Henry the VIII in past life. Most of the time, he’s at home so he acts like a Dad, but when he’s at work or coaching a sport, he acts like Mr. Weiss, and Coach Lenny. Other people love the way he acts and what a nice man he is, but I’m the one that really loves him. He is a great Dad and when he is busy I just leave him be.
Of course he is a great Dad, in my opinion the best Dad around. He’s sweet, kind, gentle, smart and fun, but he is the only thing that I love the most, my Dad, the best guy ever!!

Monday Morning - Lenny begins the 11th of 12 treatments! The end is in sight! Lenny feels good and has recovered from the last treatment. The hardest part of going for treatment now is that he knows that he will be sick in a day or two.

He has learned to "manage" the treatment and he knows when to sleep. Drop him a note or give him a call.

Thanks again for all your support, I don't know what we would do without all of it.

Check out the photos......and leave a message...

Lenny is back to work! He came home very tired on Monday but he has learned to rest when he needs to. He has learned to "manage" the chemo....so he knows when to rest. He is anxious to be done.
He was so happy to hear from so many over Christmas week. Calls from around the country and....the cockpit, the police car.........He loves to hear from you guys! Thanks.

Merry Christmas friends & family:

Lenny finished the 10th chemo treatment and has two more to go. He is ready to be done! He was pretty sick after this treatment, but he is “managing” well. He knows his limitations and rests when he needs to.

Last night we celebrated Christmas Mass with Lennys family at St Josephs church in Miesville. Afterward we had the traditional Italian meatballs & gravey and Lasagna at Grampa Lenny’s house, along with Lenny’s brother Bob & his wife Dawn. The kids enjoyed playing with their cousin James…he is at a fun age where he likes to play with the kids and…..he gets into stuff!

Lenny & I woke this morning to the rumblings of the kids thumping down the stairs at 5:30 a.m. We tried to convince Maggie & Lenny that 7:00 would be more appropriate time to get up….it was a good idea but they couldn’t wait!

We are off to my brother Mike’s house for more Christmas celebrating. The kids plan to go sliding with their cousins….we’ll see what the snow conditions are.

We have many traditions and so much to be thankful for. Two years ago Maggie wrote a poem that we keep with our Christmas memorabilia. This is very precious and pretty timeless. We decided to share this with you, with permission from the author.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Love,
Tara, Lenny, Maggie & (Little Little) Lenny

I Remember…
By Maggie Weiss

Christmas is about when Jesus was born.
We celebrate His birthday
By participating at church and family gatherings.
This is a time of giving.

I remember the sounds of the songs at church
and the crunch, crunch of the snow.
I remember the multicolored lights on the house and tree
and the red stockings on the fireplace.

I remember the scent of peppermint candles
The sweet smell of the ham
The strong aroma of coffee
And the salty smell of the shrimp.

I remember when many of my relatives
would all sit together for dinner.
It gets pretty crowded
but I don’t really mind.

I remember on Christmas Eve visiting Pop Pop
talking, eating and opening gifts.
On Christmas day Santa would come
And hand out the gifts wrapped in shiny paper.

I remember two years ago I got an American Girl doll
Named Molly McIntyre.
Last Christmas I got new outfits for Molly.
One was a lime green dress with a red jacket and matching hat.

I remember a funny song “Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer”.
My favorite song is “The Little Drummer Boy”.
My brother, Lenny and I will introduce a new tradition this year
A voice and violin duet to Jungle Bells.

I remember Uncle Tom with his practical jokes.
He always makes me laugh.
Uncle Mike always says, “Hey, Maggie-do! How ya’ doin’?”
And Uncle Bob calls me Maggie-do’s!

I remember my cousin, Bobby from St. Paul.
He’s more like a friend than a cousin.
Bobby lets me borrow his books.
We both love to read and talk about what we’ve read.

I wish that my mom could have a solid gold necklace for Christmas.
I wish my dad had a workshop in the basement.
I wish my brother had a hundred video games.
I wish to be first in line for the next Harry Potter book.

This wish is from me to the world.
So simple, yet it’s true.
It’s the only thing I need.
I wish for world peace.

Lenny started the 10th treatment Monday morning. Just as anyone who knows Lenny....He continues to keep a positive attitude.

Already he is not feeling very good and he hopes to rest so he can enjoy the Christmas season. I believe the activities will help to pass the tme while he is not feeling well.

Stop by or give him a call.....he appreciates hearing from you!

Merry Christmas...
Love,
Tara, Maggie & Lenny

Lenny is down to three remaining treatments. Each treatment he gets sick earlier and it lingers abit longer. He is VERY anxious to be done!
We are very fortunate to have so many who have helped us along the way.

Check out the photos of Lenny’s Co-workers from Dakota County & friends as they helped out this summer.

I must apologize for delay in getting photos on this site. I think I can only put three on at a time…..so check back for more!

Tara

Monday, December 6, 2004 3:43 PM CST

Lenny started the last of the four remaining treatments. He is very anxious to be done with treatment and get back to normal. He remains healthy....all blood counts, etc are good....So he is told to continue doing what he is doing. The pattern continues....He starts treatment today and already is feeling tired & abit sick. So he will lay low and keep warm.

He sure appreciates hearing from everyone! Give him a call, drop a note or stop by. He still checks this site regularly! Don't worry about waking him....if he is sleeping he doesn't answer the phone.

Thanks again.......

Tara

Saturday, December 4, 2004 9:57 AM CST

Lenny had a CAT scan yesterday to look at the tumor on his kidney. There has been no changes in the tumor and that is good news....

Thursday, December 2, 2004 9:39 AM CST

Yes....Lenny does hide when he is not feeling well!

He is feeling better today and is at work. Tomorrow he has a CAT Scan to look at his kidney. He has a tumor on one of his kidneys that the Doctor has been monitoring. In February when we are finished with chemo, they will determine the best treatment plan for this tumor.

I will let you know what tomorrow brings......

Thanks for checking!

Saturday, November 27, 2004 1:33 PM CST

We have so much to be grateful for!

Thanksgiving was celebrated at Grampa Lennys house along with Lenny's Brother & Family & several of the Donohue's. We had a nice day & the kids always enjoy being with their cousins.

Lenny is 2/3 through his treatments. He was sick on Thanksgiving but seemed to enjoy the company. The pattern continues with each chemo treatment, He seems to get sick a little sooner in the process and seems to take longer to recover. He is worn out and anxious to be done with treatment!

Give a call or stop by.....It helps to pass the time.

Love,
Tara

Thursday, November 18, 2004 1:10 PM CST

Lenny had a colonoscopy yesterday and Dr. Sweeney, the surgeon said things looked healthy. It is funny to see the Doctor get excited about the proceedure.....he would point out things on the monitor & say "Lenny, doesn't that look great....look at..." Of course Lenny was more interested in being done with the exam.
Now we get ready for the "good" weekend. Lenny will be feeling good & I am sure out & about. Give a call or stop by...he would love to hear from you or see you!
Thanks,
Tara

Monday, November 15, 2004 6:08 PM CST

We have been having some technical difficulties with our home computer and I have had some difficulty updating the page.....including adding photos!

Lenny seems to be more worn out after chemo. He was pretty sick on Thursday and Friday and it took longer for him to "bounce back" over the weekend.

He gets quite tired at any outing. Thankfully the weather is cooperating so he does get out more than we thought he would .....keep calling & e-mailing him. It helps to keep his spirits up.

Thanks.........Tara

Sunday, October 24, 2004 8:44 PM CDT

Lenny starts round 6 of chemo tomorrow, half way through treatment! We enjoyed the long weekend (no school on Thursday & Friday in MN) Lenny & the kids helped me on Friday with a United Way of Hastings project, I couldn’t have finished it without their help!

We are busy with the start of Lenny’s (Lenny III) hockey season. The weather has been pretty good which makes it easier for Lenny (Lenny Jr) to tolerate the treatment and he can get out to watch practices & games.

And YES that was Maggie Weiss on the 10:00 news on Tuesday night! Maggie was invited to be a “Host Athlete” at the Special Olympics Minnesota draft party. This is a big fundraising event that Special Olympics Minnesota has every fall with a host of Minnesota professional athletes. Maggie “mingled” with Mike Tice, Tony Oliva, Amos McGee, Al Numan, Ricky Young and Michael Bennett as well as some of her friends she has met in competition over the years. She had a great time!

The kids busy schedules help to keep Lenny occupied. He is very proud of their accomplishments and has been a big influence in their activities.

We are planning a bonfire on Sat Oct 30th. If you are in the neighborhood stop by! Thanks for your continued support…………photos coming soon!

Tara

Yo-yo-yo, whatsup? Everything’s fine as usual. Lenny (Dad) is starting up on his 7TH round of chemotherapy, and you guessed it, the end is now in sight!!!!!! Only 5 more to go, and we’re done!!

This is for all you Harry Potter fans on this website: The 3RD movie is coming out on video and DVD November 23RD, 2004!!! Mark your calendars, and get one ASAP or else put it on your X-mas list.

Thank you for helping us clean up our yard. It makes Lenny feel at ease, knowing that his yard is ready for winter. He is also really excited about Thanksgiving at Grandpa Len’s house. He hopes you can all come!!!!!!!!!!

Please be sure to sign the guest book. It’s real fun to see all your comments in it.

We hope that everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving. Gobble, gobble.

Maggie (Not to be confused with the one who is married)

Lenny is currently in round 7 of chemo and struggles with the typical symptoms that we have experienced. He remains quite positive and now is counting weeks until we are done with treatments.

On Sunday we heard a testament of faith from a friend (and “Hastings Sharks” parent) who recently finished a very difficult treatment for lymphoma. It is encouraging to know someone who has beat the odds. His illness strengthened his faith and his faith carried him through illness, treatment and recovery. Thanks Gary for sharing your personal story.

Lenny is enjoying the calls & e-mails from many friends from around the country. Those old girlfriends keep coming out of the woodwork…..they send him cookies, recipes and hand knit scarves……….He is lovin’ it! This is a great scarf! Can I order one? Oh and the endless supply of Ring Dings….

There have been several occasions when I have had to send him out of ear of the children as he reminisces about his youth……………….There are some things they do not need to know about (and I don’t want to know anymore things).

Lenny’s co-workers came and raked leaves last Friday. It was a beautiful day and Lenny was feeling good so he was able to help and enjoyed seeing everyone. Thanks for your help.

Thursday, October 14, 2004 7:24 AM CDT

Here it is 3:30 am and I’ve been up since 2:00. This chemo stuff keeps me awake at night. I’ll be up now until Maggie gets up at 6:00 for school.

Hi everyone, first I would like to thank all of you who have sent prayers and blessings either by phone, email, cards or visits. They have really given me hope. Also, a big thank you to all of you who have helped out by sending food, gifts, helped financially, and the landscape crew who landscaped and cleaned up my yard. Truthfully it’s been very hard dealing with this. Everybody who I talk or see say “boy Len (Little Lenny) you look great” but on the inside it’s not that terrific. I have nausea, insomnia, tired, have tingling in fingers & toes and burning sensation in my figures and throat whenever I touch or drink anything cold. I don’t wish this on my worst enemy. I’m worried about work, family (the Crab-o-meter) and winter etc. But by the good graces of God and all of your prayers and blessings I will make it through this.

Stop by, call or email but if you do stop by just don’t look at the messy house sometimes I don’t get to my mister mom duties on time.

Thanks again and hope to here from all of you. Don’t forget to pass on this web site.
Lenny (Little Lenny)

Tuesday, October 12, 2004 7:25 AM CDT

Lenny started the 5th chemo treatment yesterday. He was up most of the night last and there is nothing that we can do for him. We just keep him warm. He will be able to sleep today and will return to Mn Oncology to get today’s treatment and they will reload the pump which will administer the drugs for another 22 hours.

Lenny had a CAT scan on Friday Oct 8. to monitor the tumor on his kidney. The scan showed no changes to the tumor. They will continue to monitor this tumor and address treatment after He recovers from the chemo next spring.

The children, in a loving way, refer to the CRAB-O-METER during treatment week. So the meter is beginning to rise, hopefully rest and encouragement will keep the meter at bay.

This is a poem that my cousin Katie made reference to in her entry in the guestbook. This is a poem that my Dad had at his office and I think there was a copy of it hanging in the kitchen at home. Enjoy - Tara

DON'T QUIT

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow.
You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out - The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell just how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit-
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit

This website has provoked so much correspondence through the website, phone calls, email and visits to the house.
I find it interesting how many remodeling jobs we have become aware of.
How many of my relatives explain their relationship to us…….
How many are up at the wee hours of the day
How many of us are effected by cancer.
What a small world it is.
All the offers for help.
How many pray……..
The power of prayer……the number of prayer chains we are included in….
All the high school contacts……let us know the outcome of the Butler game this weekend…….
College contacts….Wally is in the seminary….you party animal….how did that happen?...Cindie & Bill are married & have two beautiful red haired children! Julie has two blond haired children…Marv…doesn’t have children….yet.
Every time I come home, Lenny is on the phone with a woman I have never heard about before or he is having lunch with the girls from work…..I am not sure if I should come home for lunch or not?
Julie do you really think your children could turn this place more up-side-down than it is now?
And to clarify......WHO is Big Lenny & WHO is Little Lenny? I am not sure, But I am pretty sure WHO "Little Little Lenny" is.
Thanks for the notes, calls and visits. It really keeps Lenny’s spirits going…..Please continue.
Thanks,
Tara

Lenny completed the fourth round of chemotherapy this week and is feeling pretty down & out. He is tired and needs to rest.

The Chemotherapy Lenny is receiving includes oxaliplatin (OXAL), irinotecan (CPT-11), 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (CF). He is receiving 12 treatments over a 24 week period.

There are several side effects from the treatment including insomnia and tingling in fingers & toes. He has not lost his hair at this point. Another side effect is a burning sensation to anything that he touches that is cold. The first two days of treatment he cannot drink anything cold and he wears gloves to touch anything refrigerated. These side effects seem to be more apparent with each treatment.

Two weeks ago during Lenny’s 3rd treatment he rode to his treatment with a friend, Ann Siebenaler who completed her final treatment for breast cancer. We are very excited to see Ann move to the next stage of recovery from her cancer. Ann has been a great role model for us, and a unique support to Lenny as they have shared their experiences with each other.

Please leave a note in the guest book and call when you have a chance. Lenny enjoys receiving calls & mail from everyone. If you are I the neighborhood, stop by! Watch for photos in the photo album later this week.

Love, Tara
