Dear Kathy and Family,
Thank you for the privilege of allowing Jason and I to spend time with all of you and especially with Donnie as his life on this earth was coming to an end. I will have the memory of him waking up when he heard my voice and giving me a smile. I am also very comforted to know that he and Jim are together again telling each other goofy stories, telling blond jokes, and seeing all the friends and family that have gone before them. God was good to both Don and Jim to allow them peaceful, beautiful deaths. We would do well to wish we could all be so blessed.

We will be in your lives to help fill the void that you will all feel with Don's loss. We love all of you and couldn't have made it this far without all of you.

Don's and Jim's friendship was a model that we could all put into practice. They trusted each other without question, they inspired each other to do greater things, they truly liked each other, they laughed together (even if the joke wasn't funny to the rest of us), they consoled each other in any loss they experienced, and they accepted each other without question. They were brothers in every sense of the word. The only thing that kept that from being true is they didn't have the same mother or father!

We have been blessed to have Donnie in our lives. He won't ever be far away and know he will help Jim look out for all of us.

We're here always.

Love, Ginni and Jason Doyle

She was fortunate to have fine examples of writing to show me.The tears are from her & I, but I know she & Don are having a great conversation in St Paul Heaven. They are both so happy.

So deeply sorry to hear about Mr. Boxmeyer's passing. I knew him only through his columns, which were often hilarious, sometimes poignant and always wonderful. As a transplant to the east side of the river, his columns helped me understand why St. Paul is such a special town and they helped me become a committed fan of St. Paul.

His passing is especially sad because we lose a voice who really knew and loved the town he wrote about. We'll never see another like him.

As I write this I have tears running down my cheeks. The tears are for the sadness I feel over Don's death. They are also for everyone who knew Don and will miss him. Finally, the tears are for the gratefulness I feel for having known Don. It has been a blessing. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Between your own tears and laughter, know that Don made an impact on this world that reaches beyond anything that could be imagined. He is loved and will be missed.

Dear Kathy and family-
We were so sorry to hear that Don passed away yesterday. He fought the brave fight and is now in a happy place. We only got to meet him a few times, but he left a big impression on our lives and I will ALWAYs remember his written description of my son, Kyle - "he has enough energy to light a small city". He wrote that about him in a story he did on Kyle's liver transplant a few years ago. I think that is also true about Don - the energy, passion and drive he put behind every story he wrote. He touched many lives and the world is a better place for the time he spent here.

Please know that your family is in our thoughts and prayers and may you find strength knowing Don is at peace. Gods' blessings on you all.

Don "no news is good news" hope this is true for you also. I was just wondering about you. I follow your writing in the paper and wonder if you know what kind of impact you have had on the community for all that you have written? Your disease and transplant has given you a deeper sense of who you are I believe. You could always write and life had meaning but now it also has a deep purpose.Never stop sharing. Aimee

Don; haven't checked on you for a while. I hope you are recovering well. Those are some great hunting photos. You are looking so much better than when we first met before transplant. This current issue must seem like a very small bump in the long rough road you have traveled this last year or two. Just a note to let you know Kim, the widow of my donor is coming to our house tonight for a visit. Monday will be 37 months for me and all is very good. Kim is in town from Grand Forks to shop for a wedding. She will remarry on July 23rd and we will be there despite the fact that it is the last day of the World Games in Canada. It is also the weekend of my wife's 40th Class reunion. Take care and may God bless you richly.

Don I am so happy for you and your family. I was the nurse supervisor who visited you at odd hours when we were both awake and on the watch at United. First congradulations, second thank you for signing the copies of your book for me last Xmas. They were a big hit for the Gille brothers who lived near the Cathedral as young guys. It gave them a return to memories long since lost, people they knew and people they had forgotten about. Third I am also a patient as well as a nuse waiting for a heart transplant. I am no longer on "the watch". If you have any ideas or suggestions to help pass the time, and collect oneself on a day to day basis, please feel free to advise me. This is new and uncharted territory for this nurse. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Aimee

I would like to thank everyone that came to the blood drive on Tuesday, October 26th. It was again very successful, we had fifty three people that were able to donate blood. ONE donation could help as many as THREE LIVES. That comes to ONE HUNDRED AND THREE LIVES, that sure is a gift of life. I am having the THIRD blood drive on Tuesday, February 1st. Again, it will be held at our church, First Lutheran 463 Maria St. Paul, Mn. Please, call me 651/773-0690 or email me and sign up to give this wonderful gift of life. I would love to sign up newcomers, and we have a lot of FUN at our blood drives, just ask Kathy and the rest of our family. Remember, we have a wonderful gift, we have DON with us. Don And Kathy and Family; This is again AWESOME!!! to see that you have connected with your donor family and then to see posts from them!! I surely hope that you can make it on Sunday to the Team Upper Midwest Celebration. You were a great encouragement to us all and you are welcome to be there! At the Support Group Meeting Bill shared his first response from his Donor's daughter after 5 years since transplant. He had written a while ago but didn't hear anything. Then he sent a card during the Transplant Games and got this reply! I hope you are really enjoying yourself after a considerable time of suffering. Don, I am so glad to know that you are back home and getting stronger. I talked with Linda tonight about the blood drive. When I asked about your progress she encouraged me to write to you here. I knew you when you and I were 5. We were in Ms. Hemminghaus' Kdg. at Adams School together. I recall the day someone checked our heads for lice. My Mother had fixed my hair in French braids that day. The lice-checker undid those braids completely and I went home looking as if I had put my finger in an electrical socket. My memories of you were of our teacher touching each of us with her long pointer giving us permission to get up from our rest period and roll up our rugs. You and I were "tapped" last one day because we had talked when we supposed to be resting.

Don, I wish you continued good health and good luck with the walleyes!

P.S. It wasn't me who had the lice that day!!

It's that guy from TV last Saturday. It was AWESOME!!! Kim had her two boys and her parents along. The family is from Grand Forks, North Dakota and they are terrific. We hit it off just as Kim said in the interview "just like meeting family" and that is what we are for sure. Kim and the boys are members of "TEAM UPPER MIDWEST" and will be marching in with me at the Opening Ceremony on Wed. July 28th at the Metrodome(ALL ARE INVITED AND THERE IS NO CHARGE).

It is wonderful to hear you are back home. That will make a huge difference. It did for me! We even discussed that very issue yesterday at the support group meeting. Take care!

Love Ya!!!

Don & Family,
6 years ago this past May 21st, my wife donated one of her kidneys to me. A few weeks later you wrote a story in the Pioneer Press about the transplant, I still have it on my computer and I re-read it at least once every few weeks. Shortly after the story appeared, my wife and I recieved calls from two different women that had also just donated kidneys to there husbands. Both of their husbands had just gone home from the hospital and were having some problems. They were very grateful for your article, because it put them in touch with us and we were able to help them with some of their questions and concerns. The storys that you have written over the years have had a way of touching people like I have ever seen before, and I am looking forward to reading more from you. We wish you and your family all the best in your recovery and we will keep you in our prayers.
God Bless you.

Dear Don - Hello from the northwoods from Rudy. Up here recovering from prostrate proceedure. Sister Patti and I drove up here yesterday in the motor home. Weather is cool; loons are shivering. Thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery. Warmest regards. P.S. Met a guy at Monroe meeting last week; he said you won the role of Mr. Torkelson in high school play because Mrs. Mahood liked you best. How's that for your past catching up with you! When you're home, perhaps we can do lunch on the East Side. Talk with you later....Rudy.

Don & Kathy;
Glen again. Your strength and endurance through an extremely difficult time has been phenomenal! I am reminded of things that we so soon forget as we move on. Certainly, the good times are what we wish to remember. Your constant recognition of the donor family is impressive. I have the very same position and feelings.

I have had the honor of finding out who my donor was and making contact with the family. We have communicated through LifeSource and then revealed identities. Letters emails and even a phone conversation have been awesome but we are at the next stage which is meeting.

We are both registered to participate in the 2004 U.S. Transplant Games at the University the last week in July. A team fundraiser is scheduled for this Saturday at Tuttle's Bowling Alley in Hopkins from 2:00-7:00 PM. Kare 11 is broadcasting their 9:00-10:00 AM show from the alley and we will be meeting my donor family for the first time - live on the show as I understand it.

Keep up the good work at rehab with the goal of getting back home. Believe me, that is "THE BIG STEP" and it helps in moving on.

Take Care, through prayer. God IS IN THIS!!!

Bob is now recovering from prostate surgery but wants you to know that lunch is on him -- at the Downtowner or DiGidios -- when you are up to it. Don, I heard of your situation from a fellow Monroe alumni. As Yogi said, it was Deja Vu all over again for me. I had liver surgery at UCLA in May, 2003. They took out 80% of my liver, which began to fail so I had a liver transplant June 13, 2003. I was in UCLA for about two months and know exactly whatyou have went through and I am as gratefull to my donor as you are of yours. Did they tell you that you have a new bithday now? The day you got the organs. Your original birthday is for most of you but not all. Anyway, hang in there. Believe me it gets better. I'm playing golf regularly and things are pretty much back to normal. Just remember to take you meds and watch out for infections. Best of luck,
Bob, Monroe, class of 58.

Hi Don and Kathy, What a great Home Page. It is great to see you coming along so well Don. I see you got out for a while and just in time for the good weather. You didn't miss anything on the fishing opener this year unless you like sitting in the rain. Hope the weather keeps up for your return to the lakes and rivers.
Best Wishes,

Hi. This is Becky Marine. I met you, Kathy, and your family the night of Don's transplant, as my brother, Rick received a heart transplant that same night. I have tried to find you from time to time when at the hospital and only found you that once the first week. I have thought about you so often and wondered how to contact you and then I saw the newspaper article from yesterday. I have kept you and your family in my thoughts and prayers and will continue to do so. It sure is an interesting journey, isn't it? My brother has had his ups and downs, but he is home, with 24 hour care. I will be bringing him up to the U of M next Thursday, June 3rd, and will be there most of the day, so perhaps we could meet if you are around and things are going ok.
I could go on and on, but best not for now. I want to thank you so much for being so kind to me that night of May 4th. I did not feel alone, because of you. Bless you!
Perhaps one day your husband and my brother will meet. He now knows about Don, and made some comment about the two of them being related. :)
Once again, I sincerely thank you and will keep you, Don, and your family in my prayers.

Dear Don, Kathy and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Cannot help but think back to the first we met when you two were a young married couple living in an apartment on Westminster (I believe) and you bought insurance from me. Don, you are the first and maybe the only person that I knew first hand who had spent time on Antarctica. Kathy, I remember that you are a Carle and I remember how strong your family ties are. You are wonderful people. I am still selling insurance (old habits are hard to break) and I now live on the Eastside after 40 plus years in White Bear Lake. Don, you write such wonderful human interest stories. You are now the story. I know that is not what you want. Fight your way to good health. I am betting on you.

Dear Boxmeyer family: On Monday a friend told me about this most recent chapter in Don's life and about this wonderful web site. After reading all of the journal entries, looking at the pictures (I especially loved the picture of Don and Perry in the fishing boat), and the entries from so many people whose lives have been touched by Don, I am overwhelmed by many emotions. I feel your hopefulness, your anxiety, your gratitude, and the deep love you have for each other. You are all in my thoughts and my prayers. I will add your names to our church prayer line. I pray that you feel the love and energy surrounding you by all those who are praying for you. Reading your "trivia" comments on the journal entries brought back so many memories of the stories Perry would share with me about all his great times with Don and all of the Boxmeyers. This week we are celebrating the lives of three very special people: tonight and tomorrow many will gather to celebrate the life of dear Don DelFiaco; Friday will be the anniversary of Perry's death; ... and every day we can celebrate the gift of the life of Don Boxmeyer, and his presence here with us today, as he does his best to celebrate the gift of new life that has been given to him. Don and Kathy, you have always given so much to all those around you, now it is your turn to be the receivers, to let others support you, celebrate you, and surround you with love. Thank you for touching my life and especially for supporting me when Perry died. I am typing this message using Perry's computer, so I especially feel that he is with us, cheering Don on every step of the way toward full recovery! May God bless you and bring you healing and peace. Love,
Terry Guindon <tguindon@comcast.net>

Dear Boxmeyers: On Monday a friend told me about this most recent chapter of Don's life story. I just finished reading all of your journal entries, looking at the pictures (I especially love the picture of Don and Perry in the fishing boat), and the number of entries from so many people whose lives have been touched by Don. I know that if Perry was still with us physically, he would be right by your side. I know he is with you in spirit and is doing all he can to help Don and all of you through this experience. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I will add Don and family to our prayer line at church. I pray that you are all strengthened and comforted by the network of people who I am sure are praying for you at this moment and sending Don healing energy. Reading the "trivia" comments on your entries has brought back precious memories of the many stories that Perry would share with me. This week we are celebrating the lives of three very special people - tonight and tomorrow many people will gather to celebrate the life of Don DelFiaco, dear friend of your family and of Perry's; Friday will mark the second anniversary of Perry's death, another dear friend ... and every day we can celebrate the gift of Don Boxmeyer and celebrate the fact that he is here with us doing everything he can to celebrate the gift of new life that has been given to him. Don and Kathy, you have given so much to so many people over the years, it's now your turn to be the receivers, to let people love you, be with you, and care for you. Thank you for touching my life and especially for the support you gave me when Perry died. Bless all of you. Thank you for taking the time to keep all of us updated on how Don is doing. Love,

Uncle Don, I know the doctors and nurses are giving you the best care possible and doing everything they can do to help you recover. Knowing how much my aunt, Big Kathy, loves you and has been by your side, I extend my prayers and support to her from a distance. I want my cousins, Chris, Diana and Erik, to know she really needs more support than you at this point in time. I'm coming back to town this summer and am going to check up on the support they've given to "Big" Kathy.
All my love, "Little" Kathy

Hi Kathy & Don, My third try at actually getting a note written and sent to you! Don, we are anxious to have you back 100%, out there trolling for big wally on one of the lakes, or rocking away idle hours on our deck "at the lake" Your courage, stamina and determination are absolutely outstanding! We will be around to see you as soon as you are up to it. Your Crosslake buds asked about you....Ken, Sharon, Pat O and Ralph (remember him from the campfire at our place?)are all thinking about you and wishing you the best. Kathy, you are amazing! You've handled the strain of this ordeal like no one else could. And still doing nice things, bearing gifts, concerned for others. Can't wait til we can make snow angels again, this time in the sand! All the best, Sue & Dewey

...the news has been ever encouraging. You definitely will always hold a ranking position in my Society for Junk Yard Dogs! We never quit.

I got to spend a little time to CBox this weekend. We were talking about how you might be wanting to see a bit faster process for recovery.

Now's the time to focus on healing. You've survived the hardest part...waiting for your new parts. The recovery process may be rigorous for you, but the payoff will be priceless for all.

You are truly one of the great storytellers of my time anyway. I look forward to the next time we get to share one amigo.

My name is Marisa and Don did a story about me back in 1988 while I was waiting for a liver transplant at Fairview University. I was born with a liver disease called bilary atresia and received my liver transplant on 5/1/88. I was pretty sick back then. The liver transplant restored my health and i've been doing great ever since!

I just heard from a friend, that Don got a liver/kidney transplant. All the docs and nurses at Fairview are AWESOME! Ann K. is a great coordinator!
Know that there is LIFE after transplant.
Hope the recovery continues on the right path.

Don and Kathy; It was a great honor to be invited to stop by for a quick visit to encourage you after our Liver Transplant Support Group Meeting. I hope that we didn't contribute too much to your agitation. Thanks Kathy for inviting us. We wanted you to see into your future. Two of the three of us have signed up to participate in the "2004 U.S. Transplant Games" which are sited right here in Minneapolis for the last week in July. We do it to encourage the donations that were required to save our lives and yours, as well as to show that we are healthy enough to compete athletically. The timing and matching for transplants are nothing short of Miraculous. I will be praying for your continued recovery. Looking forward to visiting again in the future. We are having the Support Group Summer Picnic the day after the Games(August 1st) and hope you can be well enough to stop by. Take care. We're praying.

Boxie: It's Thursday, the 13th of May, and not a very nice day if you look out your window, provided they issued one when you were enrolled in that medical prison. Anyway, the skies are slate gray and urinating occasionally on us honest folk. The temp at this writing is a mere 44 degrees, so stay tucked between the sheets by all means. The Minnesota fishing opener, as you know, is this weekend but my personal opener will not be until the third week of June. When that time arrives, I will boogie on up to Ely and drown worms, minnows and other bait with my cousin. We usually have reasonable luck.
YOU SHOULD KNOW that Sam Swartz of copy desk fame is ensconed in that same hall of misery as you. Sam had part of his lung removed Monday. He has cancer not only in his lung, but in his bones as well. They are gonna work on the lung problem first, then work on the other problem.
You likely are not aware that Don Wyatt "resigned" as executive editor of the Duluth News-Tribune. Resigned is in quotes to denote that there is widespread doubt on whether that is appropriate terminology.
Not much new over at my place in Beautiful Bloomington. My BW (beautiful wife) and I are slowly weeding out some trash in preparation of putting our palace on the market. We hope to find a one-story shack not too far away so we no longer will have to contend with the omnipresent stairs of our split-foyer.
Keep 'em on their toes, buddy. Soon as it is permissible, I shall stroll on over and use my stellar humor to test the state of your recovery.
Even though I will not be fishing this weekend, I will uncap a tall, cold, foamy and silky brew and sip a toast or two to your rapid and complete recovery.

Hi Don, Kathy, and family,
I very accidently ran in to Stan Turner about a week and a half ago and found out all that has been going on in your lives. Although I said accidently ran in to Stan, I fully believe that it was not an accident that it happened. I believe that it was set up by a higher power so I would be able to add my prayers for Don's full recovery. I want you to know how appreciative I am Kathy that you were so thoughtful to have Diana call me when all of you have so much more to think about. I have now read all the updates on Don's condition and am so impressed by the wonderful pieces of humor that are included. It brings back many memories for me of Don's fantastic sense of humor. I look forward to reconnecting our friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Don even though you are going to miss opening of fishing season this weekend, your fishing pole is waiting for your hot little hands to torment all those fish in the lake very soon!

All of us -- and by that I mean not just his family and friends, but all who read the Pioneer Press -- need him back in top form.

Jim and I are praying continually for a speedy recovery for you, Don. We are rejoicing that you were able to get the "new parts" you needed. We hope we can make it to Minnesota this year and see you. You should see our daughter, Sarah. She is taller than all of us at age 14. She dearly loves Minnesota since we visited back in 2001. She did a report on it that year and won 1st prize in the Academic Fair. Love to everybody, See you soon. CB

H1 Don and Kathy!

Glad to hear every bit of good news! It is so sweet that we live in this day of media and medical advances. Some days (as watching the horrible things going on with the U.S. in Iraq - we wonder about the media) are diamonds and some are stones. Sounds like your diamond days are coming!

We want to let you know that we know about this opportunity to communicate with you through Dewey. He is probably there with you every day!

Our love, prayers, thoughts, and wishes for more time "Up North" with the two of you (and the kids and dogs) are expressed between us every day!

If we can do anything to help, let us know.

Seriously, we hope you are feeling better and looking forward to spending some time out here fishing casually, the Montana way. Hello to Don, Kathy, Eric, Chris and all other family members!

Some of you will remember me as being called Bobbie Boldt...I've gone back to using my maiden name -- just to confuse all the Hockey boys who call my son Brad "Friend".

Brad sent me the website, allowing me send you my best wishes and to say I'll make many prayers for all of you while Don recovers from surgery. Thanks Brad for keeping me in the loop.

In a 'previous life', I was sitting where Kathy sits now, as wife to a survivor of a very seriously ill husband. I empathize with you all, having many stories of my own.

Hang in there folks...every day brings new events...funny, sad, and amazing. Each day is a journey to be treasured. God Bless You All.

Oh, thank God. Don has been in our prayers for so long, but especially in the last couple of days. I don't know how many times I stopped what I was doing to murmur a prayer for Don's body to remain strong, his blood pressure to rise, give his doctors clarity and foresight and comfort the family and friends of the donor.

Thank God, thank God, thank God!
