I came across your website today, Caleb, and I read the whole thing. I don't have a sick child....I do have 5 healthy ones...and all of your journal entries touched my heart deeply. I sat here reading, and cried and cried, and was reminded that we should not take the little things for granted. What a difficult, yet amazing journey you have had. It sounds like you have touched countless lives! And that you will continue to do so. You have touched mine, and I don't even know you. But what I have read today in your journal will be transformed into more appreciation in my life, more patience, more joy, more love. That will have an affect on those around me, and will be spread to those around them and so on and so on....who knows how many lives it might change! God bless you and your family.....How fortunate I was to have come across your site today.

Caleb,
As I think of you, I think of a strong, courageous and happy little boy who will grow up to be a wonderfully, strong and loving man.
Our life experiences are what make us who we are as a person...I hope you will look back and know that you are a stronger person because of the cancer you have overcome. Our prayers are always with you and you are always on our minds... We are so glad to have met your parents and to have "you" and your family in our lives. What a blessing it is!
Continue to move forward and enjoy life for all the great pleasures it can offer! Be sure to take things one day at a time, reflect and don't forget to take the time out to smell the roses, watch the butterflies and lay in some nice green grass while you watch the clouds go by.

We LOVE You!!

Our Blessings,

Dear Caleb,
I remember the time that you became sick, your daddy had just come back from Iraq. I thought that the worry time was over and that I wouldn't have to pray unceasingly but I was reminded that you should do that no matter what, when you became sick. There are always people and situations that need prayer. I am glad that you are better and able to climb high mountains and jump broad streams but more importantly to jump on your new trampoline and give great big bear hugs. I will always love you Grandmommy.

Hi Caleb ~ I will never forget the day that your Daddy called to tell me that your health was challenged. I knew that you were a tough little cowboy, but boy have you shown all of us how tough you really are. Your whole family has given us all a good lesson on how to "cowboy up." I hope that you all know how much you are loved by so many.

Dear Caleb,My name is Terri and you use to live across the street from me and would come over and play with my granddaughter Meagan. We had alot of fun with arts and crafts. Thanks to you I have learned to put my petty problems aside and focus on what really matters. When I would come over to visit I would feel my heart break to see you in pain but before I would leave you always had a smile and I would think to myself would I ever be that brave ? I will continue to keep you in my prayers and continue to thank God for prayers answered. You are awesome !!!!!!

Caleb and family,

I remember back to that snowy day in February when I came over to play with your sister in the snow. Who knew then what was in store for all of you. No matter what obstacle life threw at you all, as a team and family you met the challenge head on. You are all stronger than ever and deserve nothing but happiness. Take what you have learned and use that strength to help someone else. You are a brave little boy that has the magic to touch lives and hearts. I will never forget the walks, days in the park, and playtime we spent together with Abby. I loved each and every minute the two of you made me laugh and smile. Take care of each other!

Hi Caleb-
We didn't know you when you were sick, only since you've been well. And we can't imagine not having you in our lives...you're one of Connor's best friends. You are such a happy kid, so full of life and energy that had your mother not told me, we never would have guessed that over the past 2 years you have endured more pain and anguish than most people do in a lifetime. But you did it! You beat the cancer! Thank you for being so strong and tough. We are so blessed to know you!

Howdy Caleb! I'm sure that you've forgotten me by now, and nothing could make me happier than that. You deserve to be away from hospitals for a long time. The nurses and doctors haven't forgotten you, though. We will remember your spunk and charm. I'll never be able to look at Spiderman again without thinking of Caleb Smith. I hope the next time our paths cross is when I'm voting for you for president or watching you accept the Nobel prize for curing cancer. Go and do great things.

Caleb and family, I just read your last journal entry. Once again, I am touched by the power of your Mom and the power in what she writes. When we first heard of your illness, we did not know you. But we instantly engaged to help. We could not bear to think how much was ahead for you and your family during this illness. We continued to pray and watch out for you in our own way. I feel for those friends your Mom said turned a cheek, they lost so much not seeing and feeling the power inside of you and your family. I remember watching you with the Redskins, your bright smile while you were held by amazing athletes that cared and were touched by you. Your story is not over, it has just begun. As you get older remember how your family was behind you. You have awesome parents, they deserve your love always, even during those trying teen years!!
We are all better people for knowing you and those special parents of yours.
All our love, Christa, Dale and Rachael

Hi, Caleb! I'm sure you don't remember me, but I knew you when you were a little tiny dude...eating crayons on the floor of your mom's classroom. I've been reading your story for the past two years and I am so happy that you are well and happy and playing like a little cowboy in Texas!! Your mother is an incredible person...(I'm sure you know this!)and she has given a lot of her friends and co-workers the gift of sharing in your triumph. Thank you both for sharing your story...Oh...and an early 'Happy Birthday' to you!

Stephanie and Family,
There are not enough words to tell you how proud I am to have known you. Your family conquered a giant and came out on the otherside whole! Life hands out many obstacles and all of us learn from the experiences of others. I walked away having a stronger sense of family and friendships. The strength you and your family shared with those of us around you was heartfelt. Caleb's happy smiles, bright rosy cheeks and cute little cowboy attire brings smiles to my face. Wishing each of you a very joyous long life! Thank you for allowing me to share in this part of your life.

Stephanie - Your children are beautiful. You probably don't remember me, I lived down the street from you in Bedford military housing. Your mom and dad still send Christmas cards and this is how I got the website for Caleb. My daughters are Melissa and Amy. You used to hang out with Melissa. Well she is the mother of one year old twins and she has a 13 year old. Amy is mother to three and her husband is stationed in Germany. I recently moved from Las Vegas, Nevada to Tampa, Florida. It was a job transfer. I just wanted to say hello and if your parents have e-mail, please let me know.

Dear Grandson,
Lola and I haven't written too much in this guest book, but I thought with the holidays and all coming it was time to say a few words.
If there were ever a gift, for us, that would top any gift ever given, it would be your recovery.
Man, I thought I was tough until I saw you do battle with this Burkett’s guy. We are so, so, proud of you, words can't express it.
I knew with all the support from Abby and your Mom & Dad, along with family and friends and the staff at John's Hopkins you were in good hands.
I don't have much more to say Cowboy, except have a merry Christmas and hope you have many, many, Wonderful New Years to come!

Love you with all our heart,
Lola and Jadgi

Dear Stephanie,

Thank you for the kind note you left to Chase in his guestbook. I just wanted you to know that having the opportunity to follow Caleb's "journey" through treatment was so helpful as we faced the unknown on our end. Caleb is obviously a brave and remarkable boy, and knowing how well he has done helped calm our many fears!

I think it's amazing that a simple search for "burkitt's" on the LLS board led me to his site. Life is just full of amazing coincidences, huh? :)

We will keep Caleb in our prayers that he continues to stay healthy and grow strong.

We are so blessed and thankful for your willingness to share and express something so private and emotional. Your journey as parents has touched us and sharing your experiences has opened my eyes to things I might have missed as I rush through everyday life... it has made me be a better Mommy. So..thank you!
We love you all...

Hi,
We were so glad that Caleb is now cancer free. You are a truly wonderful family. We are keeping you all in our prayers.
Uncle Al joined us for the 4th of July. He contributed a terrific meat sauce to the menu. In fact, we liked it so much we begged him to join us and bring it to the Miller Family Picnic this Saturday. He said all he did was follow Aunt Dottie's recipe. Well, he did a good job.
Love to everyone,

Children are amazing little beings. They keep us on our toes even if they are only three years old. We often do not give them credit for the things that they understand. I wish you could be my 4th grade teacher, you were so good to me. Thank you for all you've taught me. I will NEVER forget you! Even though we are in the military too and I have to more often, you will always be my favorite teacher and I learned more in the few months we were together than in my 9 years of life. I will hold you forever (and Caleb) in my mind! I love you Mrs. Smith and I prayed hard for you EVERYDAY, I cried for you every night when I went to bed and my Mom and Dad always tell me I have a closeness with God like nothing they have ever seen. Caleb, I am very happy to know that you are getting stronger and healthier. You are amazingly brave and a true Super Hero. So much love has been circling around you since you got sick. And all that love, I believe, has helped you get better (with a lot of help from your doctors and nurses). What you don't know yet, but will one day, is that all the love that has been sent to you has been a special gift to your family and friends too. You, young man, are the source of all that love. Hi Caleb,
Hope you had a good day. We swam in our pool and tried to do some yard work. The pool was alot more fun.
I told you Hayden loves spiderman too...well just recently his new favorite is Batman! He has a little bat man utility belt and mask. I'm gonna let him be batman for Halloween and make his daddy dress as Robin. He will be 3 in August. Maybe if you make it down to Virginia beach we could have superhero convention!

Stephanie,
Isn't it funny how were scared to pieces to have the chemo flowing into to them....but more scared when it's gone. It's like the safety net has been yanked away! Someone told me I would be worried about her until I'm old and gray and I said "no I'll be worried about her until she's old and gray!" Just recently we had a scare with petichiae. The school nurse called me. I freaked out. Called our clinic and they said they thought it was ok. Just take her to the lab tomorrow. I said " No thanks, I'll go today!!!!" Luckily everything was fine. We will have to have a platelet coagulatory (study) in 2 months but we are staying positive it will come back fine. Remember, during this whole time you've had to stay strong and focused. Now your mind has time to wander...stay strong. I have heard from another Burkitt patient and our oncologist that with Burkitts the longer your out of treatment, usually the first year, the risk of relapse reduces significantly. I know that probably doesn't help you alot right now but eventually it will. The treatment has ended but the emotional rollercoaster is still going.
Just remember to take care of yourself! Whew...sorry so long winded : ). It just us "Burkitts" people are few and far between...so I feel bonded to you guys. Take care.

Hi Caleb,
Your Mommy came by Lindsey's site. She had ALL with Burkitts Leukemia. We are always so happy to hear someone is finished with chemo and doing well. Your are so cute. We love spiderman too. Lindsey's daddy has collected spidey stuff since he was a kid. I hope your having some nice weather and enjoying being outside. Ther will be so many wonderful things to do.
Take care.
Lisa and Lindsey

Steph,
I read through your journal. Aren't our kids amazing! The whole time Lindsey was in treatment I thought it was horrible. But one day I had and ephinany. We couldn't control her getting cancer but the experience made us better people and the kindness, genorousity, love, and support we were shown from friends family and strangers was truly amazing. We have made lifelong friends from our clinic the LLS and other places.

As for ending treatment...wow it was almost scarier than treatment. Big freakout moments!! First fever, first bruise....ughh! But once you know it just "normal" kids stuff you'll feel so grateful!! I will never feel safe and secure but I try to keep it in a place I can control it.

Good Morning Smith family: Praise the Lord that you all are at home. The saying "There's no place like home" really does have a true meaning. Wouldn't it be great if we could all have that pair of "ruby slippers" in our closet? I pray that Caleb continues to have his UP days and can benefit from the healing of being home and running and jumping and just being Caleb. Being outside is such good medicine for those lil ones. I pray the weather stays good so he can be outside and able to play with Abby and his friends. I was praying the other night and then this thought came to my mind. Caleb has been such a healthy lil guy before all this happened, that is a good thing. If he had been a sickly child, this would be so much harder on him, but as he stated: I'm Winning, I'm Winning. His spirit and zest is going to beat this thing. He is going to continue to get all those bad webs out of his tummy. He is a fighter and he will have a story to tell when he gets older. He is a leader and he is sharing and teaching everyone who comes across his path. There was just a little kink but things are getting all straight now. I pray for nothing but happy days for each of you but as my little friend, Mattie, would say Remember to play after each storm. Peace and Happiness and loads of love and playtime for all. God Bless and continue to hold each of you in his loving arms. Love, Jan

Dear Josh, Stephanie, Abby and Precious Caleb:
Well today is the magical day ...your last Chemo treatment. How wonderful today is! I pray for all to go well and much happiness for you all. It's now a new part of this journey to start and may you be blessed and I know you will get through this next phase as well as you have the first part of the journey. You have shared so much with so many. You've taught others the value of family, friends, and what the power of love can do. Just keep your faith in one another and with God and continue to just take things a day at a time. Don't be concerned with yesterday for that is over, dont be concerned with tomorrow because that's a day away and just believe in Today, the present because that is such a wonderful gift/present from God. He has great things in store for all of you! Be happy, Enjoy today and know the Smith family has a beautiful future just waiting for them ahead. Embrace the wonderful moment today when you walk out of that hospital knowing how far you have come thus far. Everyone is clapping and are walking out of those doors with you in spirit. God Bless you.

Dear Stephanie & Josh:

Your journal on Caleb's progress has been so inspiring to me. Not only has your faith and trust spoken to my heart but also your love for one another as a family. Fortunately for me, I never had to face such heartache raising my son, (I question if I could have endured it), but after reading your beautiful letter Josh, I realized how easy it is to take things for granted and to miss out on the everyday blessings that come our way. You and your family are so very special and have been such an inspiration to me. Our prayers are with you all.

Hi Stephanie & Josh...You are both truly amazing. STEPH, you are not having negative thoughts. You are a very strong person and if I were to ever go through anything like this, I hope I would be as strong as you are. A former neighbor's son was diagnosised with leukemia when he was just 4 yrs old. He will be 12 this fall. They too, experienced many bumps along the way. I know his mom also had similar thoughts. It's a natural way to think and be able to try and accept all that is going on. You are such an amazing MOM!!!
JOSH...WOW!!! What an impressive story. I had tears while I was reading it. I too use to sing to Corbin when he would have MAJOR meltdowns. My aunt thought I was nuts, but it worked. You are an incredible DAD!!! You are both doing a terrific job. Keep up the good work. Love Sandy

ONE WISH

If I could have only one wish this is what it would be
For Caleb to be well and the Dr's would find a cure
I would love to see him be the lil three year old
little boy that he was meant to be
The Chemo would be no more
and instead he would be running, laughing,
and having the time of his life
Instead of the drives to John Hopkin's he would be
crossing the Bay Bridge and on his way to
Ocean City
So many things that I pray for
But I know in God's timing this will all be a reality
So until then, I will continue to vision of what
I would love to see
Caleb to be cancer free and just a lil guy of 3

Stephanie...Who are we to judge you? We sit here in our homes with simple life challenges while you experience one of the most challenging experiences of all. Having never been "in your shoes" I have no right to judge. You have so much to confront each day it is only normal to expect that some days will be worse than others just as some will be better than others. I have nothing but admiration for all that you are doing. You are most certainly a special mom and a special person. Thank you for trusting your feelings with those of us on the outside looking in. My only hope is that you know many of us care about you and your family. We are here to lean on when you need some strength. Sending hugs all around! See you on Wednesday. Love, Zetta
Zetta Hart <dollyzee@comcast.net>
Severna Park, MD USA - Friday, May 13, 2005 2:55 PM CDT
Oh Stephy, how could anyone judge you for those feelings? Everyone always says expect the worst, hope for the best. That's just what you're doing. You are right for thinking on a day by day basis, sometimes moment by moment. Just try to keep your thoughts to now and not to tomorrow. I once read something to the effect: Only God is 3 tenses, was, is, and will be. People should not worry about the was or the will be, because that is not the state you're in. Rely on God NOW, not then, NOW, not later. He will take care of it all.
Stay strong. All of you. I pray this EVERY time I pray for you. God will always be there to give you strength when you don't have it on your own.
PS, feel free to report your negative feelings here. I know it's disheartening for all of us as well as you, but you have to vent sometime, and it's better to let us know when you're most depressed so you can get the correct support from us. I'm sure we'll ALL write you every encouraging word we can, specially when we think you might be down. Love you guys so very much!

Dear Stephanie: I feel what you shared is straight from your heart, please know that those who come here would never judge you... for we all know that God is the only person who can judge us. Also, this is a place where you can share your thoughts, feelings, for we are all here for you and Josh. This is a safe place for you. I learned something that I would like to share: Your feelings are yours - 100%, they are neither right or wrong, because they are yours. Once I learned that lesson, my life became so much better. In times of great trials for me, it was God and those who loved and supported me that brought me through and one day I saw the light again. Please know I truly care for you and I am here for you and your family 24/7/ I pray for you all daily. God Bless, Love, Jan

Dear Caleb & Family, You are all in our prayers every day. It is nice to know that you all have so much emotional support to get thru it all, so much outpouring of love and caring. Stephanie, you are greatly missed from your third graders! Thanks so much for stopping in often and giving them updates on Caleb. It has meant a lot to them (Kevin tells me every time when you have visited...and what you have said). Lots of love from us..to you and your family.

Dear Josh, Stephanie: One of my favorite sayings that I've held close to my heart through the years is: Without friends, Life would be like a garden without flowers. It is such a blessing to sit back and learn through this Caring Bridge Site how many friends are there for your special family. This site is named perfectly, "Caring"... For God has provided "who and when " he would place those special people for you. I also like the word "Bridge" because I love the song "Bridge over troubled water"... you have to start the path at the beginning and walk over the to the other side. Your journey will bring you many blessings, families get closer, your faith grows and all along seeds are being planted and at the end is a beautiful garden. Caleb will have such an amazing story to share and he will become a beacon of HOPE to others. Stephanie you are such a "Teacher'... you are helping other Moms and Dads going through the very same thing you are. I want to wish you a very Happy Mother's Day. You are an awesome Mom with so much love for your family. It is such an honor knowing you.
Caleb: Hey lil' man, I hope you get to feeling better real soon. You will be home before you know it and you have a special surprise waiting just for you. Your big sister, Abby, is waiting for you to get home so she can play with you. I was with your Daddy yesterday and you should have heard some of the wonderful plans he has that he wants to do with you in his Father/Son time. It's really going to be fun. And the family things he has in store for all of you. Makes me want to be little again! It's a week today since you had that outpouring of love at your Fundraiser. See, time does go by quickly, before you know it, you will be having your last chemo. Just keep hope and positive thoughts flowing. Remember to play after each storm....
"It is good to have difficulties settled by faith before they are unsettled by feelings." From Springs in the Valley by Mrs. C. Cowman
Have a wonderful weekend Smith family. God Bless, Hugs, Jan

I MET AN ANGEL TODAY
Have you ever met an angel and feel how blessed you are?
I did today and Caleb is his name
He may be only three years old but what a special
lil guy he is
He has a smile that just won't quit
It just warms your heart to be in his presence
He has a special way of getting you in his "web"
His laughter makes you grin from ear to ear
So much love you feel the minute you walk in the door
Your life will never be the same once you've met
Caleb Smith!
He's such a Soldier just like his Dad
How proud I am to have been able to meet
Abby, Stephanie and Josh and that special lil Angel, Caleb
How can I ever thank you for letting me spend time
with you today
I will never forget a minute
for I've filed the visit in my Memory File
Caleb sure possesses more powers than Spiderman
and all the rest
For he is an Angel right here on earth!
I know one thing and I hope you know it too
I'm so blessed that God has given someone as special
as you in my life!

Hi Caleb, Abby, Stephanie and Josh:
WOW what an honor it was to finally get to meet you today. I am so blessed that God has put our paths together. I just fell in love with you. You are such a sweet, awesome family. Caleb is just adorable and his smile just lights up the room. Abby is beautiful, inside and out. I had so much fun and I love Caleb's laughter. I felt the Lord's spirit there so strong. I know, in my heart, he is holding Caleb in his loving arms. You are so loved. I know you probably don't see the blessings of this journey, but I know, in time, God will reveal them to you. Caleb is a vessel of God and he is going to touch so many lives. I mean, gosh, he's touched mine in a big way already. Know I am here for you anytime day or night. I want to share my experience, strength and hope with you. Please let Caleb Spiderman's Mom loves him and hopes to see him soon. :)

Dear Abby, Stephanie, and Josh,
Abby, your mom and dad are so proud of you. I heard what a wonderful big sister you are being. Caleb is lucky to have a sister and friend like you. Jack says "hi!"

Stephanie and Josh,
You two are wonderful parents. It is amazing, that when given the oppurtinity, parents can reach even further into their hearts and find even more love, patience, and resilience. I commend both of you. This experience is different for everyone, but as I told Caleb, I believe in time, he will forget most of what has happened to him. I do have memories, but I don't look back very often. I look at what I have now and think to myself that it was worth it. If I had not gotten cancer, I would have not have moved from FL to MD. I would not have met my husband and I would not have had Jack (and 100 other things). Bottom line, I would not have been as happy as I am right now. I am always taken aback by how many miracles came out of my tragedy. It sounds like you have already been given the gift of seeing life more clearly. It also doesn't hurt that you have a sense of humor! You are in our prayers. Sincerely, Kim

Dear Caleb,
Jack and I are still praying for you every night! I am so impressed with how well you are doing. I am proud of you and Jack is proud of you too. Jack says he misses you and he wants to play Spiderman with you soon. I had a sickness like you when I was 25 years old. It was really hard for me to take all that medicine but I am glad I did. Now that I'm all better, I barely remember being sick. I know it is hard for you now, but as you grow up, you will forget all this yucky stuff. Angels are watching over you and protecting you Caleb! Keep up the amazing work! Love, Mrs. Kim and Jack Lucado

What absolutely precious children! I have never seen two kids who are more beautiful! I know I have not talked to you (josh and Steph) in some time but I am always kept up to date from Barb! I have been praying for your family and especially for Caleb! I am glad that Josh is home safe and that the two of you can face this challenging time together! I pray that through God's grace he will wrap His arms around and comfort each of you while you endure this difficult time! I volunteer for Make A Wish and can truly tell you these children are the ones who can humble us as they have such an unbelievable spirit, a never ending will and such a gracious understanding and acceptance of their situation that they end up teaching us lessons instead of the other way around! I will keep praying for you all and I know that God will bless your family!

Dear Josh, Stephanie. Abby & Caleb.
When I "adopted" Josh's unit in Iraq little did I know that this little soldier would become the subject of lot of my prayers, thoughts and daily conversation also. The bravery must run in the genes. I will continue to pray for you and your family. He's in Gods hands just like Josh was when on his dangerous missions in Iraq. This little soldier has a mission he has to complete and he will with prayer, family & friends support and God.
The heart breaking and helpless feelings we have about him being so sick is, he has to go through this, himself. We can only support and comfort, try to make things as normal as possible. We cannot bear his pain, only comfort him. We cannot take into our bodys this diease to battle it ourself, We can only do what is within our power and pray God give us the strength to do what we must.
This little boy like his daddy is so brave, and he will be home soon, playing in the yard with his hummer and big sister, God bless you all.

You know the first time you called with the "perils of Caleb". I did not know what to say, even as a grandmother who loves her grandson. As a parent we face lots of trials with our children but none as terrifying as life threaten-ing issues can be. I am glad that God chose to put the two of you together. It is obvious that he knew that you would need one another for the strength to get through all the days ahead. I hope that this will draw you closer together as a family and that your family will be a witness to others in their time of need. Love, Mom
