Just thinking about you and Connor today. Five years....! Today another angel gained his wings from AML....only 6 years old. Like Alexa, he fought the fight....had two bone marrow transplants! God just needed another angel in his realm. You are never far from our thoughts and always in our prayers.

Dana,

I doubt if you will remember me at all but I remember you. We met in 2006 by chance actually. My newborn son had just been diagnosed with Cancer and was undergoing Chemo. Alexa was in for one of her many rounds of that horrible stuff! By chance the floor was full and we ended up sharing a room! I remember beautiful Alexa sneaking a peek at the "adorable baby" everytime she had to use the restroom or went out of the room for a while.

Three years ago today I was devastated to see that she had went to Heven in the Daily Journal. As I read the paper today I saw the memorial that you guys had printed for her and again the memories came flooding back. Please take pride in knowing that just for that short time that she was in our lives she made an impression! I also remember how kind you were seeing that I was alone volunteering to keep an eye on my lil guy if I needed to go get a bite to eat , shower or just needed a few mins to gather my thoughts!

I also wanted to let you know that the little adorable baby that Alexa loved peeking at ... well he is now a 3 year old rowdy pre-schooler! He is now in remission and doing things the Docs said he would never do! I know Alexa is still peeking down on him and keeping him safe and for that I am grateful. I will make sure that when he is older he knows of Alexa and how sweet she was.

Thank you so much for these wonderful memories. Our heart goes out to you and your family and we will keep you in our prayers.

Nearly 3 years have passed since Alexa joined the choirs of angels. I am sure she is enjoying every minute in His presence. As I am also sure that you miss her as much today as you did when she left her earthly home on 9/29/2006. So much has changed and yet nothing has changed--just this past week we lost a friend, 46 years young, to cancer and had two other friends diagnosed--one was told to go home and make the most of the time she has left--maybe six weeks and the other was told it was "caught" early enough that the doctors think they can help him. Wishing you peace and pink skies.

How lucky can you be not to any child with cancer!!! There are so many families who have lost a child to this epidemic of childhood cancers and there are so many more who have children fighting so many different kinds of cancer. All of these families need our prayers each and everyday. That is why you are always in our thoughts and prayers everyday. I know that God is holding all of you in the palm of His hand! God bless everyone and maybe one day in the future all of us can say we don't know any child fighting cancer--wouldn't that be wonderful!!

You don't know who I am, nor do I know you. I ran across your story in my search to sign up again for St. Baldrick's again. As me and my kids go each year, people ask who are you supporting. Our response is the same, we do not know any children with Cancer, which is why we are doing it. I tell them why wait until you know someone, when you can make a difference now. This year we will be shaving our heads for your beautiful daughter and your family. I just prayed and asked God for blessings in your family. Thank you for your courage, it means more than you know.

I hope that you are all finding meaningful ways to enjoy the blessings of this holy season. Every time I drive past your house and see a glowing pink sunset overhead I think of Alexa and her passion for all things in life. I didn't know her well...just watched as she walked her puppy or played with the kids in the Ladds' backyard, but she definitely "glowed" with joy and peace, even at that young age. Your pink flowers were absolutely gorgeous this summer! Alexa was surely delighted at their abundant beauty, even in a year of floods and destruction all around us. Here's hoping Chris has found a rewarding new job and you are all settling into your new "normal" life again with peace and grace. You're always in my prayers...

October 3rd and 4th brought us to Franklin for the IHSAA Girls Golf State Championship, and after Friday's round we had to go to pick up a prescription for Taylor. Some of the streets were closed because of a festival, so Steve asked a sheriff for directions to CVS. He was very helpful and told us to just follow him. As it turns out, we were taken right by the cemetery, so we stopped and said hello to Alexa. Strange how things work out. Last year Ashtyn saw the balloons and Uncle Stan, this year we got to visit Alexa. Take care and know you are thought of more than you could possibly know.

Hello Chris,Dana and Connor, I think of you often and how your doing. Infinity thoughts of Alexa! She lit up the gym everytime she was there with that glowing smile. I used to tease her and Connor about their smiles. I would tell Alexa, I bet we could turn the lights off because of the glow from her and Connor's smiles. Alexa would just give me that smile and giggle. She was very precious to me. It was such an honor to know her and teach her. My heart and prayers go out to your family.

So good to see an update from you. I love hearing how you're doing. Our wedding anniversary is Sept. 29, and
I always have Alexa close to my heart on that date. As you were writing about "remember whens" I remembered when I was helping her with her makeup when she was in the school production of "Annie." She was so excited to be in the play.

Happy belated birthday to Chris. I should remember it because it's so close to Robbie's....but I'm getting old.

Hello! I just wanted to say hi to you guys and let you know we're all still thinking about you every day. I just found out Dana will be attending my fraternity's fundraising dinner for Riley next week at Butler. I can't wait to see you again, as this will give my brothers a chance to put a face with the name of someone who I have talked about as one of the strongest people I have ever met. Take care, see you soon.

The Riley Foundation--What a perfect career for you! Sometimes wonderful blessings can come from tragedy, and I'm sure you're helping a lot of children and families get through the tough times you've known so well. After losing her daughter to cancer (at Riley) in 1994, my sister-in-law was inspired to go back to school and become an RN. She had never found a career that she felt so committed to, and she loves it. Alexa's spirit is surely with you every day, keeping you strong as you watch other families live through the days of hope, pain, and grief you came to call "normal." Now you have a "new normal," and all those that were touched by Alexa and her loving family still pray for you and wish you all of God's bountiful grace.

I am the new Community Outreach Coordinator for FCSC and saw the link of the school's website. My mother recently died of liver/Ovarian cancer and although she was not my child, she was close, close family and I empathize with your great loss.It was hard to see the pain she endured, but amazing to see her strength in attitude when the going got tough. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. I feel my mother's presence during stressful times and some interesting things have happened to let me know she is in Heaven and still alive, just at the next level :o) I am sure your daughter is there, too. God bless you all.

Dana and Family,
I hope 2008 brings you many blessings and proves to be a better year. The first year of "firsts" are now over and I am sure you can breathe a little sigh of relief about that. I still hear about you Dana from Jenny (my friend who I tried to get into PartyLite when I was in it) and everyday I am still truly amazed by you. You are such an inspiration and everytime Brian and I hear the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" we think of Conference and Lexi. That truly was a special event and we are so blessed and priveleged to have been a part of it. Thank you so much for being such the inspiration that you are. God will truly bless you as He already has!! Keep up your great spirit and perhaps one of these days I will tag along with Jenny and come see you. :) Have a wonderful and blessed day.

We keep a picture of Lexi on our refrigerator, it is the one from the benefit concert flyer. I keep it there to remind myself and my family how precious life is and how lucky we are to have each other, also it touches my heart everytime I see her smiling face. No one is promised tomorrow, but if we trust in God we will see one another in Heaven again one day. I did not get the privilege of meeting Lexi personally but she touch my life just the same. Lessons in Life

By Regina Brett

To celebrate growing older,
I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.
It is the most requested column I've ever written.
My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here's an update:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.

17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.

18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple

24. The most important sex organ is the brain

25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone, everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young

37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.

38. Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

42. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

43. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

45. The best is yet to come.

46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

48. If you don't ask, you don't get.

49. Yield.

50. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Your story has touched my life, I don't understand why I feel so strongly. But I do. I have visited this page hundreds of times just to see how all of you are doing. My daugther reminds me of your daughter. She is only 6, full of blonde hair and giggles. She also is a very gentle soul, very spiritual, she has an understanding beyond her years. . She has prayed with me for Alexa and your family. We lost our yorkie one year ago and Madison said it would be good for Alexa to have a little dog in heaven. I just thought that was so sweet. Your family has touched so many. May God truly bless you for all the lives you have touched.

It is The Feast of Angels. The day of the Epiphany, a day much like Christmas/Thanksgiving overseas. Do some research on the net and you will see some amazing facts about this day. It is also my wedding anniversary. The year I discovered this fact/ of the holiday was our 11th anniversary and it was 2006 the week of Sept 29th. Hello,
It was not too long ago that I heard the news of Alexa. My heart broke and I only wish I had made this posting sooner. I used to be in charge of a philanthropy called TRIKE at Butler University. One year we asked for a quote from a child to put on our shirts. "We get to eat lots of Spaghetti-O's" said by Alexa was used on the shirts.

It was an honor to present our check at the Riley Telethon with Alexa and family with us and to this day it is one of my fondest memories and I feel so blessed to have met Alexa.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you continously and may God be with you always.

God Bless,

Dana, In Sunday School last week, our leader asked the question "When has someone else's personal faith helped to make your faith stronger?" Even though I've never met you personally, I immediately told of the inspiration that your blog provided for me and many, many others during the most difficult days of your life. Your unwavering faith and ever-growing service and love for others helped me to put my own daily struggles into perspective. I miss your wonderful entries, but I hope that this means you have moved forward in your lives and are enjoying the peace that you find in your pink skies. We lost our 4-year-old niece to cancer at Riley thirteen years ago. Her birthdays and homecoming days are still bittersweet for the entire family, but life has gone on. I continue to pray for your healing and thank God for the wonderful gift of your faith...a faith you weren't afraid to share with others. May God's grace continue to shine upon all three of you as you continue your journey in faith and move one day closer to your reunion with dear Alexa. May God Bless all your days as you have blessed so many others.

Dearest Shank Family,
You have been so strongly on my mind as we all approach the anniversary of Alexa's homecoming into the arms of our Lord Jesus. For most of us, it seems hard to believe she has been back home in the arms of our Lord for a year already; yet for you, I am sure it seems like an eternity.
I just want you to know, Dana, Chris, and Connor you will forever live in my heart and my prayers shall never cease for you. Thank you for your witness and the love you shared with all of us.

Hi, Dana and all of Alexa's family. I came here from Henry's site and just wanted to extend my condolences on the loss of your beautiful princess. I know the days ahead will be hard for you all, but I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you approach the one-year milestone date.

It's been just over 3 months since our daughter earned her wings; sometimes it seems like 3 years and sometimes 3 days.

Read this and thought of you. Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.
Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, "I love you and I wish you enough".
The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom".
They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?".
Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking,
but why is this a forever good-bye?".
"I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be
for my funeral," she said.
"When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?".
She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone". She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more. "When we said , 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them". Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory.
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude
bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.
She then began to cry and walked away.

I WISH ALL OF YOU ENOUGH!!

Hello Dear Family,
Please know I have not forgotten you and my prayers continue to ask God to help you get through each day, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. Be patient with yourselves, it has been such a short time since Lexi left for her heavenily home. Be patient my friends, keep your faith, keep your love for one another and find joy in Connor's journey of life. I wish I could do something to ease the pain you must feel but I am helpless so I continue to pray that Lexi's journey which taught so many of us to hold tight to Jesus will continue as you find peace and comfort by supporting others as they walk with their child toward 'pink skies'. God hold you tight and steadfast.

I have this saying that is taped on my desk - it reads:
GOD PROMISES A SAFE LANDING, NOT A CALM PASSAGE. IF GOD BRINGS YOU TO IT, HE WILL BRING YOU THROUGH IT.
As I read it I thought of you all.
In my daily walks for exercise, I pass through the cemetery were Alexa's lays to rest. When I saw that her new head stone was put on her grave I just paused to take it all in, my tears that roll down my face shows just how much your little girl touched so many of us. Dana and Chris you have a lot to be proud of and God knows that you miss her so very much.

Eight months have now passed since Alexa left this world for her place in the glory of God. I hope there is some peace in your lives. Prayers continue for you from around the world. I hope the following brings you some comfort.
"To All Parents"

By Edgar A. Guest
"I'll lend you for a little time a,child of mine," He said,
"For you to love the while She lives...and mourn when She's dead;
It may be six or seven years, or twenty-two or three...
But will you...till I call her back, take care of her for me?
She'll bring her charms to gladden you; and shall her stay be brief,
You'll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief."
"I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there, I want this child to learn;
I've looked the wide world over, in my search for a teacher true,
And from the throngs that crowd life's lane...I have selected you.
Now you will give her all your love, nor think the labor vain?
Not hate me when I come to call to take her back again?
"I fancied that I heard you say, 'Dear Lord, Thy will be done!'
For all the joy thy child shall bring, The risk of grief we'll run...
We'll shelter her with tenderness, we'll love her while we may,
And for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for her...much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the grief that comes...and try to understand!!!

Shank family,
thinking of you each day as we continue our journey. Your story provides that cautionary tale that no one else seems to realize but those who have endured childhood leukemia - that it remains always out there and "remission" is not a cure. But, your story provides me so much more as well - an example of how to live, love, and embrace the will of God. Thank you all, and know that you remain in our thoughts and prayers always. Every beautiful sunset reminds us of your princess, and to embrace our prince.

Hello Precious Family,
It's been a while since I have told you of my prayers for all of you. Even though I have been silent, my prayers have so many times daily been sent to God. I think about you all so often during my days and wonder how you all are doing. I pray God is still giving you strength and you have not lost sight of Him. I know Lexi wants you to keep your eyes focused on God because when you focus on Him, you focus upon Lexi and the joy she is experiencing living life eternally with her Lord, whom you taught her to know and love while here on earth. May God Bless you and hold you tightly in His arms and give you pink skies.

God bless and keep all of you in His loving care. Hoping that your lives are filled with peace and pink skies.

With Love From Heaven

Last night I came to you in a dream
and although you didn't want it to end,
we had to part once more.

Will you do something for me?

When sleep finds you tonight and we meet
again in a place where life is so unreal;
know that we are truly together in spirit.
Forget the nonsence of happenings around
us and just feel my presence.

Understand that it is only my body that has died,
not me, not my soul, who I am.
I am with you, watching over you, guiding you.

I am alive...

I realize that it's not the same, the fact that you
are not able to reach out and touch me, hold me,
even kiss me like you once had, and for you, I
wish I could change all that... but I can't.

You see, for me nothing has changed between us,
but the fact that you no longer hear me the way
you use to, you no longer see me or feel me in a
way that you're familiar. My love for you hasn't
changed, but what has is my understanding of
life and self.

It's so beautiful here... I am happy and at peace.
It's more then you could ever dream. If you could
only feel how serene it all is.

Imagine for a moment standing in a sea of tall green grass surrounded by wild flowers dancing with a breeze, trees towering lazily above you swaying gently back
and forth while reaching upward toward a brilliant
blue sky. Imagine the sun so warm, so soft its touch,
so full of love filling you completely as you are one
with all that is and ever has been.

I feel no pain... I am happy and I know that I
am home.

Please do not be sad for me and know that I am
only... but a breath away.

With Love,
From Heaven

Just to let you know that we are thinking about you and praying for you. Hope you are all doing well. Here is a poem I heard recently and thought it might bring you some comfort.
Safely Home
by Unknown

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still;
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.

There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth--
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Good morning precious family,
Just want you to know, I saw Lexi dancing in the beautiful pink clouds over the Pacific ocean last night and was reminded of her journey and your continued journey as you approach Lexi's earthly birthday next week. What a blessing to know of the feelings of joy of the day Lexi was born here on earth as well as the 10 years of earthly life she was given. God tells us, our reason on earth is to come to know Jesus as our Lord and Savior and lead others to Jesus and then to celebrate our heavenly birth through a life well done. Lexi will be dancing in heaven over the joy of having the incredible earthly life to lead so many to Christ. I pray you keep this focus and God leads you to continue Lexi's journey of leading others to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God be with you and continue to bless you in His strange but miraculous ways.

I just want you to know that Alexa is definitely in a great place!! There is a very tense situation going on in our family currently--actually, many families are involved. We are all praying for each other and supporting one another, but the situation was at a stalemate, I prayed to Alexa and asked her to intervene for us--less than an hour later we had wonderful news and the situation is moving forward with a very positive outcome!!! There are lots of people that are in heaven that I pray to and for and I know they are looking out for all of us left behind!! I pray for all of you everyday and I know God is holding you in the palm of His hand!

I am a friend of Tim and Susan Fisher's and heard about Alexa last fall after she had passed away. After losing my father in 2005 from a 6 month course of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, I began to run to work through my grief. I have found so many of my blessings as I find my dad in my running and it allows my focus to be on those who are still journeying with terminal illness. I recently made a committment to be a member of Team in Training, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and I will participate in the One America 500 Mini-Marathon event in May, 2007. While composing my letter of committment and request for support to family and friends, I received an email from Susan (who wasn't aware of my goal yet) with your web-site. I wondered then why the email would have come at a time when I was so focused on those who had been afflicted with the disesase the society supports but found that taking the time then to visit Alexa and hear her story gave me the inspiration to find the words to complete my letter. This will be my first endurance event and while my goal is to cross the finish line, my priority is to be a member of a team that races for a cure and fights for a life one mile at a time. I will dedicated and honor Alexa in my training and completion of this event and mentioned her as one of my honorees in my letter. I was most touched by your journal entry for Jan. 1, 2007. As I ran a few weeks ago at a place where I find peace and feel my dad's presence, I was inspired and saw him in the "snow angel" that had been created on the track where I run. Every time I crossed the finish line, she was there, frozen in time. I totally understand how you celebrate Alexa in the gentle breeze, the moving clouds and the stillness of the starlight. Every rainbow reminds me of my father's love and the eternal joy to come. Thank you for sharing the angel of love you were given. Her purpose here on this earth, brief as it was, co

Hi, I just got my copy of Lexi Danced and have been listening to it today and it is so special. I know Lexi is not only dancing in heaven but teaching all the angels some very special dances as well. I love the picture of Lexi on the inside of the album, it seems as though she is saying, it's okay.
Love to all of you as I know the days ahead to Lexi's birthday will be yet another journey in your book but please know you are being held strongly in prayer.

A friend sent me the following link to a video report that was on CNN - it is an amazing story of a twelve year old girl who is an amazing artist. She believes the visions that she paints are sent to her from God. She talks about how beautiful heaven is - with wonderful colors that we cannot even imagine. I thought this story might bring some comfort - to think what beauty is surrounding Alexa.

Happy Birthday, Dana! I did not know it was your birthday until I saw the journal posting for today from another friend.

To: Chris, Dana, Connor and Stan Clark and team...thank you for letting us to be part of your family. When I was contacted last April (2006) in order to schedule Luke Austin Daugherty and Amanda Shelly/Clay Daugherty to perform at the May, 2006, fundraiser at the Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, IN...little did I/we know that it would connect us with amazing life-long friendships.

Lexi's memory lives on through all the people she touched while she was living and she continues to touch hearts every day. Her Spirit lives on...she will continue to change lives and save souls through her example of God's love.

Luke's song about Lexi ("Lexi Danced")is climbing the Indieheaven radio charts...it started at #183 on Jan.8th and it is #94 today...I am sure it will reach #1 and get national radio play. For anyone interested, go to www.indieheaven.com/artists/luke and there is information there on how to listen and vote for this song. This is one of the ways to help keep her memory alive.

I have her picture in my home office and I look at her every day. I pray for you daily.

Love, Bella Louisa (Luke and Clay's Mom)

I'm quite confident that Alexa found yet another new friend in heaven this past weekend. Our dear pastor, Rev. Wayne Markward, passed away last Friday and went to live among the angels. Pastor Wayne was a jolly soul that absolutely adored children. He had a practical joke and a one-liner for every occasion, so I'm sure that he and Alexa have hit it off and are giggling together already! If they make halos and wings to fit short, stout, bald angels, then our beloved Pastor Wayne is surely dancing among the Heavenly Host with your precious Lexi today. Smile and know that she is still being loved...as are you.

I JUST FOUND THIS AND THOUGHT OF YOU!!

Make the wind to blow upon my face
that I may feel my child's sweet breath.
Make your hand to touch upon my breast
that I may feel my child's warm body.
Make your lips to whisper in my ear
that I may hear the sound of my child's
voice.
Make your eyes to lay upon my sorrow
that I may remember my child's face.
Make your angels to sing for me
that I may hear my child's laughter.
Make your heavens to shine bright above
that I may hold onto my child's love.
Make the sun to lighten up this darkness
that I may be at peace.

So good to hear from you. Spend as much time with Alexa as you need to spend with her--that will most likely be the rest of your lives. My resolve for 2007 is to never forget those in pain and pray daily for all of you. You have made it over a great many hurdles--I know the "big" one is yet to come--Alexa's birthday. I also have learned your strength and know you will get over that hurdle, too. I think of you often and pray for you daily along with so many others who do the same. Three months have now passed since Alexa became an Angel. For most of us, the time has flown by--fall is such a busy time of the year, getting ready for all of the holidays. I am sure you can tell us just how many days, hours, minutes and seconds have passed since Alexa joined the realms of glory. So many people are still praying for you and hoping that you feel the love of God in your lives. I was with my nephew this morning as the sun rose over the horizon and he noted how "pink" the sky was and commmented that the angels always paint the sky pink when they are happy!! Great insight for 5 year old!!! As 2006 draws to a close, we wish you pink skies and peace in 2007.

I know she is so proud to be your daughter and your sister. My prayer is that God may continue to abundantly show you His love.
With much love, Nancie

Merry Christmas, my special family,
I pray you found many joyous moments among the tears which I am sure were also there.
We spent Christmas in Arizona where the sunset on Christmas Day was a radiant Lexi sky. Every shade of pink was filling the sky.
God Bless you and hold you tight.

I wrote this poem in 1994 and read it at our Christmas Eve candlelight service in honor of our niece, Kristen, who lost her battle with cancer at Riley on October 12, 1994, at the age of 4. I'd like to rededicate it this Christmas to Alexa. Wishing you all a blessed Christmas, filled with Christ's healing love.

The Angels’ Song

I believe that every time a singer lifts his voice
to Jesus Christ in victory, the Angel Choirs rejoice.

And every time a baby cries with its first breath of air
The angels sing a lullaby for children everywhere.

I believe that every time a tear of grief is shed
an angel's soothing melody upon our hearts is spread.

And every time a loved one's lost and gone to live above
there's one more angel voice to spread the song of Jesus' love.

I believe that every time an encouraging word is spoken
one more note is added to the angels' strains unbroken.

And every time a gift is given in pure, unselfish love,
a joyful noise rings out that fills the heavens above.

I believe that every time a lost soul finds his way
The angels sing sweet guidance to lead him day by day.

And every time we put our foolish, earthly wants aside
and choose instead God's wiser path, the angels' song's revived.

For the original song of love and praise rang out in all its glory
that silent night in Bethlehem to sing creations' story.

That night the angel chorus sang out to all mankind
"Peace on earth, good will to men" – Let love on earth abide.

Abide it did, in Jesus' life, and in His death was blessed.
That love lives on in each of us each time we give our best.

And every time the angels sing, their heavenly song is sent
to God above in glorious praise for all His love has meant.

For each of us has power to add to that refrain
and send our own thanksgiving till Jesus comes again.

Every time we open our hearts and let God's love pour out
we're showing Him His precious gift was not received without
our most sincere and heartfelt thanks for everything we have –
It all began that Christmas morn – God gave the best He had.

Our sacrifices day by day do not go unseen
for every time we give our best, an Angel Choir sings.

Being a part of the Partylite family has had so many blessings in my life. Little did I know a beautiful young girl named Alexa would have such an impact. I think about your family weekly but this time of year is more precious and special than ever before. For one my life has completely changed through God's plans and what Partylite has offered me. Listening to "Light a Candle" and holding my 7 year old daughter I broke out in tears thinking of Alexa and your beautiful family. How I cherish each loving moment more in honor of your daughter. When I lost my 16 year old step sister to a brain aneurysm I always told myself I would do the things she would have done and stepped out of my comfort zone because at least I had the choice to do so. Now I hold my 4 beautiful girls even closer because I have the chance to do so.
I also saddened by your loss but amazed by your courage I am blessed to share that my best friend K.C. is on the year anniversary of her discovery of breast cancer. I remember being in fear that I would lose a dear friend but I continued to have faith in that God had a plan in her life. A year later she has endured treatments, a double masectomy only to do over $8000 in sales , sponsor 5 people, earn the Summit and become a unit leader. Boy did He have a plan for her. I am grateful to be a part of such wonderful company .. not just Partylite .. but shining lights like your family that stand as a beacon in the dark for those of us who strain to see, struggle to not give up, and seek the strength to continue on . Thank you for sharing your lives and struggles with all of us. It has touched so many lives. Please take the gift of grace and peace with you this holiday season . With great love

FOR ALL THE 'LITTLEST ANGELS' THAT HAVE GONE TO HEAVEN IN 2006.
"THE LITTLEST ANGEL" A Short Story Especially For
Our Littlest Angels
Once upon a time... Oh, many, many years ago as time is calculated by men--but which was only Yesterday in the Celestial Calendar of Heaven--there was, in Paradise, a most miserable, thoroughly unhappy, and utterly dejected cherub who was known throughout Heaven as The Littlest Angel.
He was exactly four years, six months, five days, seven hours and forty-two minutes of age when he presented himself to the venerable Gate-Keeper and waited for admittance to the Glorious Kingdom of God.
Standing defiantly, with his short brown legs wide apart, the Littlest Angel tried to pretend that he wasn't at all impressed by such Unearthly Splendour, and that he wasn't at all afraid. But his lower lip trembled, and a tear disgraced him by making a new furrow down his already tear-streaked face--coming to a precipitous halt at the very tip end of his small freckled nose.
But that wasn't all. While the kindly Gate-Keeper was entering the name in his great Book, the Littlest Angel, having left home as usual without a handkerchief, endeavoured to hide the tell-tale evidence by sniffing.' A most unangelic sound which so unnerved the good Gate-Keeper that he did something he had never done before in all Eternity. He blotted the page!
From that moment on, the Heavenly Peace was never quite the same, and the Littlest Angel soon became the despair of all the Heavenly Host. His shrill, ear-splitting whistle resounded at all hours through the Golden Streets. It startled the Patriarch Prophets and disturbed their meditations. Yes, and on top of that, he inevitably and vociferously sang off-key at the singing practice of the Heavenly Choir, spoiling its ethereal effect. And, being so small that it seemed to take him just twice as long as anyone else to get to nightly prayers, the Littlest Angel always arrived late, and always knocked everyone's wings askew as he darted into his place.
Although these flaws in behaviour might have been overlooked, the general appearance of the Littlest Angel was even more disreputable than his deportment. It was first whispered among the Seraphim and Cherubim, and then said aloud among the Angels and Archangels, that he didn't even look like an angel!
And they were all quite correct. He didn't. His halo was permanently tarnished where he held onto it with one hot little chubby hand when he ran, and he was always running. Furthermore, even when he stood very still, it never behaved like a halo should. It was always slipping down over his right eye.
Yes, and it must be here recorded that his wings were neither useful nor ornamental. All Paradise held its breath when the Littlest Angel perched himself like an unhappy fledgling sparrow on the very edge of a gilded cloud and prepared to take off. He would teeter this way--and that way--but, after much coaxing and a few false starts, he would shut both of his eyes, hold his freckled nose, count up to three hundred and three, and then hurl himself s 1 o w 1 y into space! However, owing to the regrettable fact that he always forgot to move his wings, the Littlest Angel always fell head over halo! It was also reported and never denied, that whenever he was nervous, which was most of the time, he bit his wing-tips!
Now, anyone can easily understand why the Littlest Angel would, soon or late, have to be disciplined. And so, on an Eternal Day of an Eternal Month in the Year Eternal, he was directed to present his small self before an Angel of the Peace.
The Littlest Angel combed his hair, dusted his wings and scrambled into an almost clean robe, and then, with a heavy heart, trudged his way to the place of judgment. He tried to postpone the dreaded ordeal by loitering along the Street of The Guardian Angels, pausing a few timeless moments to minutely pursue the long list of new arrivals, although all Heaven knew he couldn't read a word. And he idled more than several immortal moments to carefully examine a display of aureate harps, although everyone in the Celestial City knew he couldn't tell a crotchet from a semiquaver. But at length and at last he slowly approached a doorway which was surmounted by a pair of golden scales, signifying that Heavenly Justice was dispensed within. To the Littlest Angel's great surprise, he heard a merry voice, singing!
The Littlest Angel removed his halo and breathed upon it heavily, then polished it upon his robe, a procedure which added nothing to that garment's already untidy appearance, and then t i p - t o e d in!
The Singer, who was known as the Understanding Angel, looked down at the small culprit, and the Littlest Angel instantly tried to make himself invisible by the ingenious process of withdrawing his head into the collar of his robe, very much like a snapping turtle. At that, the Singer laughed, a jolly, heartwarming sound, and said, "Oh! So you're the one who's been making Heaven so un' heavenly! Come here, Cherub, and tell me all about it!" The Littlest Angel ventured a furtive look from beneath his robe. First one eye. And then the other eye.
Suddenly, almost before he knew it, he was perched on the lap of the Understanding Angel, and was explaining how very difficult it was for a boy who suddenly finds himself transformed into an angel. Yes, and no matter what the Archangels said, he'd only swung once. Well, twice. Oh, all right, then, he'd swung three times on the Golden Gates. But that was just for something to do!
That was the whole trouble. There wasn't anything for a small angel to do. And he was very homesick. Oh, not that Paradise wasn't beautiful! But the Earth was beautiful, too! Wasn't it created by God, Himself? Why, there were trees to climb, and brooks to fish, and caves to play at pirate chief, the swimming hole, and sun, and rain, and dark, and dawn, and thick brown dust, so soft and warm beneath your feet!
The Understanding Angel smiled, and in his eyes was a long forgotten memory of another small boy in a long ago. Then he asked the Littlest Angel what would make him most happy in Paradise. The Cherub thought for a moment, and whispered in his ear.
And then, in all those timeless days that followed, everyone wondered at the great change in the Littlest Angel, for, among all the cherubs in God's Kingdom, he was the most happy. His conduct was above the slightest reproach. His appearance was all that the most fastidious could wish for. And on excursions to Elysian Fields, it could be said, and truly said, that he flew like an angel!
Then it came to pass that Jesus, the Son of God, was to be born of Mary, of Bethlehem, of Judea. And as the glorious tidings spread through Paradise, all the angels rejoiced and their voices were lifted to herald the Miracle of Miracles, the coming of the Christ Child.
The Angels and Archangels, the Seraphim and Cherubim, the Gate-Keeper, the Wingmaker, yes, and even the Halosmith put aside their usual tasks to prepare their gifts for the Blessed Infant. All but the Littlest Angel. He sat himself down on the top-most step of the Golden Stairs and anxiously waited for inspiration.
What could he give that would be most acceptable to the Son of God? At one time', he dreamed of composing a lyric hymn of adoration. But the Littlest Angel was woefully wanting in musical talent. Then he grew tremendously excited over writing a prayer! A prayer that would live forever in the hearts of men, because it would be the first prayer ever to be heard by the Christ Child. But the Littlest Angel was lamentably lacking in literary skill. "What, oh what, could a small angel give that would please the Holy Infant?"
The time of the Miracle was very close at hand when the Littlest Angel at last decided on his gift. Then, on that Day of Days, he proudly brought it from its hiding place behind a cloud, and humbly, with downcast eyes, placed it before the Throne of God. It was only a small, rough, unsightly box, but inside were all those wonderful things that even a Child of God would treasure!
A small, rough, unsightly box, lying among all those other glorious gifts from all the Angels of Paradise! Gifts of such rare and radiant splendour and breathless beauty that Heaven and all the Universe were lighted by the mere reflection of their glory! And when the Littlest Angel saw this, he suddenly knew that his gift to God's Child was irreverent, and he devoutly wished he might reclaim his shabby gift. It was ugly. It was worthless. If only he could hide it away from the sight of God before it was even noticed!
But it was too late! The Hand of God moved slowly over all that bright array of shining gifts, then paused, then dropped, then came to rest on the lowly gift of the Littlest Angel! The Littlest Angel trembled as the box was opened, and there, before the Eyes of God and all His Heavenly Host, was what he offered to the Christ Child.
And what was his gift to the Blessed Infant? Well, there was a butterfly with golden wings, captured one bright summer day on the high hills above Jerusalem, and a sky-blue egg from a bird's nest in the olive tree that stood to shade his mother's kitchen door. Yes, and two white stones, found on a muddy river bank, where he and his friends had played like small brown beavers, and, at the bottom of the box, a limp, tooth-marked leather strap, once worn as a collar by his mongrel dog, who had died as he had lived, in absolute love and infinite devotion.
The Littlest Angel wept hot, bitter tears, for now he knew that instead of honouring the Son of God, he had been most blasphemous. Why had he ever thought the box was so wonderful? Why had he dreamed that such utterly useless things would be loved by the Blessed Infant? In frantic terror, he turned to run and hide from the Divine Wrath of the Heavenly Father, but he stumbled and fell, and with a horrified wail and clatter of halo, rolled in a ball of consummate misery to the very foot of the Heavenly Throne!
There was an ominous and dreadful silence in the Celesti'al City, a silence complete and undisturbed save for the heart-broken sobbing of the Littlest Angel.
Then, suddenly, The Voice of God, like Divine Music, rose and swelled through Paradise! And the Voice of God spoke, saying, "Of all the gifts of all the angels, I find that this small box pleases Me most. Its contents are of the Earth and of men, and My Son is born to be King of both. These are the things My Son, too, will know and love and cherish and then, regretful, will leave behind Him when His task is done. I accept this gift in the Name of the Child, Jesus, born of Mary this night in Bethlehem."
There was a breathless pause, and then the rough, unsightly box of the Littlest Angel began to glow with a bright, unearthly light, then the light became a lustrous flame, and the flame became a radiant brilliance that blinded the eyes of all the angels!
None but the Littlest Angel saw it rise from its place before the Throne of God. And he, and only he, watched it arch the firmament to stand and shed its clear, white, beckoning light over a Stable where a Child was Born.
There it shone on that Night of Miracles, and its light was reflected down the centuries deep in the heart of all mankind. Yet, earthly eyes, blinded, too, by its splendour, could never know that the lowly gift of the littlest Angel was what all men would call forever

I know how you are feeling for I lost my Alex 9 months ago. I didn't even want to put up the tree this year but I knew Alex would of not wanted that for his little brother. I remember Alexa at Riley's her room was always so beautiful. I just wanted you to know I was thinking of your family and you won't be alone this Christmas.

Hi Chris, Dana and Connor -- I can honestly say a day does not go by that I don't wonder how you are doing? I am sorry I haven't called or even dropped a note. We do continue to pray for your family EVERY SINGLE NIGHT -- our kids each pray for something different, but we know will always give you strength to get through the day. Chris, mom has said she sees you at church. I am going to call one of these days. I hope it is okay to call during the day. Dana, you are an AMAZING woman. I know you are being lifted up in prayer and God is giving you your strength, but I read your notes and am always astonished at the way you always end up encouraging US to be better. Dana you have the ability to write that book or go on a mission trip. Your testimony would forever change the lives of those you have the privilege of sharing your story with. I love the idea of your annual tradition with Acts of Kindness or Honor. I hope you have a merry CHRISTmas! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE IN OUR PRAYERS! Love to you all, Darci Cohoon and family

Alexa has been on my mind all day today. I keep seeing her soul touching smile. I will never forget the impact she had on many people at National Conference. She truely was an Angel here on Earth. I am so thankful I had the pleasure of meeting her, if only for a brief moment. She touched my life forever. Maybe it's because I am awaiting the results of some tests my son had done, I am hoping her smile is letting me know it's all going to be ok. Thank you so much Dana, Chris and Conner for sharing your ANGEL with each of us!! *BIG HUGS*

Is it just me, or does there seem to be an awful lot of pink in the sky these days? I see it in the morning on my way to work; I see it in the beautiful sunsets in the evenings. The first time I noticed it was a few days after Lexi walked through the pearly gates and onto the streets of gold. Coincidence? I don't think so!

Hello Special Family,
We had our Reality Regional today and did an ACS raffle in honor of Alexa. We raise $300 which we will send to PL to be a loving memorial to Alexa and in honor of you, her loving and faithful family. You have taugh so many of us how love is sometimes not fair but to hang on and know that God does love us and has a perfect plan for our lives. You three are so very special and to think we have all come to know you through our little angel, Alexa, and you courageous faith. To know you, is to know the Lord, for you have shown what it means to walk in faith and to endure through faith. Thank you so much. I pray God will not take a long time to show you why His plan was to take Alexa home at such a young age. Regardless of whether it is today, next week, next year or years from now, I know you will continue to walk in the path of the Lord and because of you, many of us will have, through your example, a pillar when tough times come our way. Your sharing of your faith over the years is a gift few have the courage to give. Bless you.

It's so good to hear that you're moving forward with new traditions both in honor of Alexa and for Connor's future. It's great to hear the faith, the joy, and the hope back in your "voice" as you write. You should definitely consider writing that book! You have so much to share...and you have already shared so much with so many people through your journey of faith and family devotion. Keep on keepin' on through this difficult time. Your Lord will not forsake you. You are truly good and faithful servants of His word. Your home was dark at Halloween. How wonderful it is to see it lit up joyously again for Christmas!! Bless you all! We, too, say a little prayer every time we drive past.

Dana,
God has already shown you your purpose in life with all that you and family are going through. You have taught me to be a better Christian and a stronger prayer warrior. I thank God more now than ever for all that he has given me and for health. I never prayed for health. I assumed it. Your strength, though you probably don't feel it has picked many of us up and made us think. Think about the big picture. Think about life and family and the goodness to help others. I look forward to visiting Lexi's grave sit to show Natalie the pink Christmas tree. She'll love it too. Merry Christmas and God bless you.

Dear Shank Family,
I have never know exactly what to say. It would be nice if I had the exact words to help take your pain away, but I've never been good with that. I have followed the website ever since Lexi got sick, and I have thought about your family many times hoping that you would always get good news. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I am amazed by your strength. Dana, As a mother I have tried to put myself in your position, and I can't imagine how you have survived the loss of a child. I thank the Lord every day that I have not had to face the turmoil that your family has been through. I know God has a purpose for Lexi. She's probably teaching the angels to dance. I saw Connor last night at the band bowling party. He is such a kind, handsome, wonderful young man, and I truly enjoyed having him in music and choir here at Creekside last year. It was so nice to talk to him for a brief time. Please know that I think about your family often, and I hope you have many happy days together. Merry Christmas, and if their is anything I can do for you all, please let me know. Linda Greenwell

Dana, Chris, and Connor -

Please know that you all continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. I can not begin to imagine the ache in your hearts. And while this doesn't ease the pain you are feeling right this moment, try to find solace in knowing..."We have to carry the cross before we can wear the crown". You guys have been carrying it for awhile, so there will be great reward for you at the end of the journey. I am sure tomorrow will be a difficult day, and I am sure there will be tears. But somehow through those tears, also share some laughter. I am sure that is what Lexi would want for all of you.

Sunday, the sermon was on the secret of thanksgiving ("Learn the Secret"), being able to give thanks through one's own suffering (Philippians 4:10-14). I sat in our beautiful church (TCC) and thought of all of you, being thankful for the life of Alexa yet suffering the pain of her loss. Thank you for saving your journey. I give thanks and prayers for all of you this Thanksgiving.

I am sure you have counted the minutes, hours, days, weeks and now months since Alexa returned home to her place in heaven--just wanted you to know prayers are continuing around the world for all of you as we enter this holiday season--rest assured no one has forgotten you and the burden you bear. Somehow, I hope you are able to make it through Thanksgiving and find some joy and happiness in your celebration. Know that Alexa is looking down on you and she is still with you in spirit. I saw a beautiful pink sky again this morning and my thoughts went immediately to Lexi and your family. As you share your first Thanksgiving without your princess, rest assured that many, many people will be holding you up in prayer as they gather this weekend. Hold on to the faith that has sustained you this far in your journey; God said he would never forsake or leave us.

We love you!

We continue to have your family in our prayers and for God's Holy Spirit to bring you peace, comfort, and joy particularly as you celebrate the "firsts" Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring, all the holidays and the anniversary of her death in September. In your darkest, loneliest moments, when you call out for help...isn't it amazing how many people are still listening? And most importantly, your Lord is ALWAYS listening. Your journey of faith and love spoke in a magical way to so many people in this world of dysfunctional families and fast-paced mania. You made all of us slow down and think about what..and who...really matters and that we're really not in control of it all. I know you're probably feeling pretty out of control right now and wishing you could hit the "rewind" button and relive some precious days all over again. But we don't get that chance in this life. One day we'll understand all that. For now, we just have to trust that someone bigger than us is in control of it all and that if we trust Him to lead us, we'll head down the path He has planned out for us. We can't know why Lexi's path was so short and why yours must include all this sadness. You've certainly had your share of tragedies in your life, Chris. Surely they've been intended to make you the strong, kind husband and father you've grown into. Hold fast to God's right hand and know that He loves you and won't give you more than you can handle...though sometimes He'll sure push you to the limit. We're still praying for you all every day....Please keep writing....we care.

Dear Chris, Dana and Connor, Hang in there--life will get better. Your pain will ease. You will never forget Alexa. For so many days, weeks, months and years all of your energy was concentrated on Alexa, now concentrate on yourselves awhile. All I can say is trust God. His plan isn't always ours. He will see you through your pain--life will be good again. I have put out an emergency prayer request for all of you. God is holding you in the palm of His hands. Don't give up--maybe a few days away from reality will help all of you--go some place you have never been before, do something new--change the pace of your everyday life. I wish I had a magic wand to make all of your pain go away. All healing comes from pain. So many people love you and are praying for you. Celebrate your lives with one another. God bless and keep you.

Dearest Shank Family,
My journey took me to Monterey, CA this past weekend. I love going to Monterey as it is my speical time of year where I am able to have peace and quiet by myself and with God. There is a special beach area there where I love to go and spend time talking to God. It was a special time this year, for as I came upon my favorite beach with the waves violently breaking from the calm of the ocean, I looked into the clouds of the sky and behold I saw a "Lexie sky". It was radiantly pink and new. Where there had been dark thunder clouds it was now beautiful rays of pink with bright sunshine peeking through. I thought of all of you, how the dark clouds and the violent crashing of the waves have been upon you. Then as I watched and pondered more, I realized the "Lexie sky" was holding Alexa's promise that everything was going to be okay and you are not alone from Alexa, for like God's promise, she is with you always. "Lexie's sky" will forever remind us of all, you and she have given to so many of our lives. You have all shown us that in Christ there is hope and though at times the waves may crash upon us, there will come the calm again. Though there may be clouds of darkness, the Son will radiate through and provide us the "Lexie Sky" of hope.
Life is forever changing and I can not begin to know your pain or the fear of how to make it through each new day, but I do know you will come through the crashing waves and onto the calm of the shore because your faith is strong and Jesus is your saviour.
Rest, cry, and mourn, it's okay. You have all been through so much. It's okay, but always recall when the sky is at it darkest, there will be a "Lexie Sky" awaiting you.
I wish I could help you in some way, Lord knows, I don't even personally know you, but I feel like you are family. Please know, like so many whose heart you have touched, I am here for you in prayer and thought.
I pray God will open new doors of ministry for you, for we all need you now. Chris, it was so wonderful to look on the website and see your message and to still feel so much a part of your lives that you were crying for prayerful help. Thank you for still wanting all of us in your lives. Alexa is not gone, her journey has just taken her to a different area of our life.
God Bless and hold you all steadfast in love and faith.

How I wish I could take your pain and sorrow away. The power of prayer is the answer and please know you are in my prayers every evening. It is easy to stay strong, but remember Ashtyn's poem? I LOVE THIS POEM. I THINK THE DASH IN ALEXA'S LIFE PROBABLY SAYS MORE THAN MANY OF THOSE WHO LIVE TO AN OLD AGE.

THE DASH
I read of a reverend who stood to speak
at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the date
on her tombstone
from the beginning... to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the date with tears
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth, and
now only those who loved her know
what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
the cars, the house, the cash.
What matters is how we lived and loved
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard,
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
You could be at "dash mid-range"

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel, and
be less quick to anger,
show appreciation more
and love the people in our life like
we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
more often wear a smile
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash...
would you be pleased with the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

WE KNOW THAT THERE MUST BE A GREAT VOID IN YOUR LIFE--MISSING ALEXA MORE THAN MOST OF US CAN IMAGINE--OUR PRAYERS WILL CONTINUE FOR YOU NOW AND FOR ALWAYS.

YOUR FRIEND IN JESUS

Dear Shank family, There are so many people continuing to pray for you and for your healing. It is hard to believe that a month has passed already since Alexa joined the ranks of angels in heaven. Today I see her in the clear blue sky and the beautiful fall foliage. She is smiling at us at every turn in our lives. A week...now a month...then a year shall pass...and you shall find your way through the "normalness" of life. Life will find a new way, a different way than you have known for so long. Don't feel guilt in enjoying life's pleasures and joys. God wants you to be happy and Alexa would surely want you to be happy and move on with your lives. Live every day with love, peace, faith, and joy in your hearts! We continue to pray for you and thank you for taking us along with you on your journey of faith. More were touched by it than you will ever know. May God bless and keep you all.

THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE POEMS AND HAS BROUGHT ME PEACE. I HOPE ALL OF YOU FIND SOME COMFORT IN THESE WORDS.
The Rose Still Grows Beyond The Wall

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God's free light:
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice length,
And unfolded itself on the other side.
The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before.
And it lost itself in beauties new.
Breathing its fragrance more and more.
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
And make our courage faint or fall?
Nay, let us faith and hope receive,
The rose still grows beyond the wall.
Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore.
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forevermore.

This is beautiful! Try not to cry.
She jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: "How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?" The surgeon said, "I'm sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn't make it." Sally said, "Why do little children get cancer? Doesn't God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?" The surgeon asked, "Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he's transported to the university."> Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. "Would you like a lock of his hair?" the nurse asked. Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy's hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. The mother said, "It was Jimmy's idea to donate his body to the University for Study. He said it might help somebody else. "I said no at first, but Jimmy
said, 'Mom, I won't be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom." She went on, "My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of someone else. Always wanting to help others if he could." Sally walked out of Children's Mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy's belongings on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy's belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son's room. She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them. She lay down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep. It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Lying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The
Letter said:
"Dear Mom, I know you're going to miss me; but don't think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just 'cause I'm not around to say "I Love You". I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won't be so lonely, that's okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn't like the same things us boys do. You'll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know. Don't be sad thinking about me. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will
take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn't look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God's knee
and talk to Him, like I was somebody important.
That's when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn't allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him 'Where was He when I needed him?' "God
said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I've written except you. To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn't that cool? I have to give God His pen back now. He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I'm sure the food will be great. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don't hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. I'm glad because I couldn't stand that pain anymore and God couldn't stand to see me hurt so much, either. That's when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me. The Angel said I was a Special Delivery! How about that?
Signed with Love from God, Jesus & Me.

Chris, Dana & Connor,
I would like to start by saying the concert/benefit for Alexa was beautiful and I was overwhelmed with all the love in the room. I never had the opportunity to personally meet Alexa but from reading her journal and hearing all the stories from her family and friends she was just as I imaged an angel would be. What a very special heart and soul she had. Dana, I introduced myself to you at the dinner Friday night, I am Jessica VanVleet's mom and the "trach" baby's (Macy) mamaw. Alexa has been and still is a big inspiration to our family. Alexa met Macy one day and later when shopping thought about the "trach" baby and bought her an outfit. We were touched that even with all she was going through that Alexa was concerned about another special child. Your are so lucky to have spent 10 years with such an ANGEL. Some people can live their whole life and never have the opportunity to be touched by such a wonderful person and family and I am glad that we have had that opportunity. Always remember all the fun times you had with your little princess and know that you will see her again in the heavens above. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and your family.

Dear Shank Family,
I remember meeting Alexa one evening for a PartyLite meeting at your house. I was in awe. She seemed like a regular kid, but I knew she was special. She had a glow about her then. I'll always believe she has been an angel all along. As I have followed her journey through this illness, I have grown up a little. I have learned to be a better parent and a better wife. I have become a better friend and a better daughter. I have prayed so much more in the last 3 years since hearing of Alexa than I have in my whole life. Alexa has brought that out of me. My Faith in God has become stronger because I know that He will only give us as much as we can handle.
I did not feel I should attend the service for two reasons. One was that I didn't know if anyone could attend, and two because it happend to be on my birthday. I came Monday evening, I hugged you Dana, I cried tears of joy and sadness for your family. I saw the beautiful picture montage and laughed at the funny ones and shed tears for the ones that were sad. I saw your princess lying in that beautiful display of flowers and memories. She was glowing. I saw her spirit in everthing around her.

I am know that so many people will be so sorry for your loss. I am too. But I am much happier for the life you have shared with that beautiful girl, and relieved that the stress and heartache of seeing your princess in pain is finaly over. You are so lucky to have shared 10 years with your daughter. I know Alexa is watching over everyone who has ever cared about her and her family. I would like to think of her as an angel on my side too. She will always be smiling in my heart. God has taken her in and given her real wings. I know she is more than beautiful. She is a Princess in God's house now. The highest honor anyone could be given.

May God bless and keep you in His hands. For He holds Alexa up. She will shine on all of us until one day we celebrate together in Heaven.

My love and prayers will continue for Alexa will never be forgotten. She will be a memory that each of us will hold close. Thank you for your inspiration and for giving life to Alexa. She has made me a better person too.

I think Alexa was up bright and early this morning playing in the clouds painting them a beautiful pink color! As I was running this morning at practice I looked up at the sky at the end of my workout and the color of the clouds caught my eye, what a beautiful pink the sky was! I commented to one of my fellow teammates, "Alexa must be busy decorating!!!" I continue to keep you all in my thoughts and prayers!

I know your pain and sorrow is deep, but I do know that time will begin to lessen your pain and sorrow. I also know that you will never forget Alexa--she will be forever in your heart and mind. Keep watching for her "signs" in your life. She will be there everyday watching over you. She will never leave you. I pray for acceptance and for joy for all of you for having had Alexa in your midst. God sends His Angels to bring messages of Hope and Promise. He sent Alexa to join the world in prayer. I will pray for you always. God is now holding all of you in His arms--feel His love and compassion.

Dana, Chris & Connor~I have started to type a message a couple different times but could never finish it, I don't know if I'm saying the right thing, but then I started really thinking, what IS the right thing to say, so I'm just going to say what I feel, from my heart. Alexa's cellebration was amazing. That beautiful angel lying there with the light from the morning sun casting down through the stained glass window on her was just another sign from Lexi, like the pink sky that has been appearing so often. I often catch myself humming or singing "I Hope You Dance" and thinking of Lexi, dancing in the clouds, in her white dress, and there is no doubt in my mind, and my heart, that she is doing exactly that, dancing, with laughter on her lips, in her eyes and in her heart. We are all here as gifts from God, He let us borrow Lexi for 10 1/2 wonderful years, and like Stan said at the cellebration, Lexi did more in that short period, than most people do in 80 years, and she touched and impacted thousands of lives in her short but amazing journey, what an amazing young lady she was! I can only hope that I can take a little bit of what Lexi has taught me, and put it to use in my day to day life, to live life like Lexi would, to treat others like Lexi would, to see things like Lexi would. THANK YOU, for coming into my life almost 10 years ago Dana, and for becoming the other half of the "dynamic duo", and for letting me watch Alexa grow from a baby, into such a beautiful princess, and then get her wings and fly, she IS truely a beautiful soul and an angel. I whispered the same thing to all 3 of you before I left the cellebration, I hope you think of that each day and remember to do it. I love you guys and I'll see you soon.

Dear Shank Family,
Words can not express the depth of my grief I feel for you and your earthly loss of Alexa. Nor can words express the excitment I feel for Alexa and her new life in Heaven. I pray you will be able to focus on visualizing Alexa in her heavenly home, a home without pain or sadness. We are so bound by our earthly life that the pain of sadness prevails in the loss of our loved ones. How comforting and wonderful it is to know Alexa is not sad for leaving her earthly home and family for we are assured through God's Word there is no sadness in heaven, only joy. My prayers will continue for all of you as eventually your tears of sadness will turn into tears of joy. Recall all the fun and wonderful times with Alexa not with sadness of missing her but rather with joy of having been able to share these times together. Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us. I shall miss walking the daily journey with you but please know, you are being upheld in prayer daily by thousands. Thank you for your courage and your faith and may God bless you with even greater courage and faith as you walk through the new paths God has planned for you. God Bless you all.
Oh by the way, when I went to get a ballon to release during the time of Alexa's service, I picked a pink one as I shall never see or think of pink without thinking of Alexa. I know her service must have been a beautiful tribute to her life and all of your faith. I am so thankful your family came into my life.

Words can not express our sincere sympathy to you in the passing of Alexa. When words are not enough, we believe prayer is. So, please know that our prayers are with your whole family!

We had the pleasure of meeting you last year at Riley when our 18 year old daughter, BreAnne, was there for treatment of her leukemia. What a breath of fresh air you both were as you walked the hallways, passing out gifts to all the kids in the unit!

Although the grief of not having Alexa with you is overwhelming, what a time to CELEBRATE her wonderful life and the fact that she is dancing without pain!

May God hold you closely in His arms and may you take comfort in the fact that one day, you will be reunited with your sweet princess!

“…where God gets angels…”

Somewhere tonight a little girl lies sleeping in her bed, with her parents just nearby. The little girl is tired, her body drained of strength, but her beauty radiates from her. At her age, she is like a spring morning, filled with promise, of things wondrous and unseen. And, although she is just beginning to blossom, a beautiful rose, she has begun to wither. She has been sick for nearly half of her short life, and while she is fighter she is in a battle she cannot win.

As her mommy and daddy watch her, they pray she is dreaming the dreams little girls should dream; of fields of flowers, of puppy dogs and kittens, of dancing and playing, of being a princess. Things she has loved, and things she will never know. They pray that she is not thinking of the last few years or months, of fighting a monster she can neither see nor understand, of taking pills and shots with names that she cannot pronounce. Terrible things a child should never know.

In her few years she has been loved by many, and she has touched countless more. Her smile has warmed the heart of all those who have seen her, and she has been an inspiration to all that have heard her story. She is all things sweet and cherished. Throughout all the sickness and pain, she has never asked “why?” She is innocent and brave, and undeserving of this fate.

As her breathes begin to falter, and the light that is the princess begins to fade, her mommy and daddy hold each other a little tighter, knowing the pain will soon be gone, but so too will their little girl. And as the light goes out, they shed more tears to join the countless ones they have shed before.

“Daddy, is that where God gets angels from?”, the little boys asks. “Yes, son. That is where God gets his angels, from princesses like that little girl.” “Will she be an angel daddy?” Holding his son just a little tighter, the father sighs, “She already is son, she already is.”

May God bless you at this sorrowful time. Alexa and her story witnessed to a lot of people. As a mother myself I can only imagine the grief. She is God's special little angel now and what a better place that makes heaven now.
Peace be with you and yours,

Have you ever had one of those moments that takes your breath away? You see something so beautiful, and so peaceful, there are no words to describe? My cousin wrote the other day about the pink sky at sunrise. Yesterday as I was driving over the bridge near Province Park, toward the police station, I looked over just seconds after all the pink balloons were released. It was a sight I will not soon forget. The sky was dotted with pink balloons, there was a green rolling hill, lots of trees, and a white casket surrounded by people whose lives were so deeply touched by this beautiful child.

Chris and Dana - your devotion to God, to Connor, and to each other is truly inspiring. I hope you will continue to keep up the journal. Our caring and concern for you and your family does not end with Lexi's passing.

Dana, Chris and Conner,
I struggled to find the right words to convey my sorrow on Monday at church. I know this is deeper than I
can imagine but I also know the promises of our Lord God
Almighty. Rev21:3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "Look, the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the old world and it's evils are gone forever. Praise God for the gift of sweet Alexa. Your reunion will be soon. Love- Michele Ruhl-Forth

I also saw Alexa perform at the national Partylite conference where she performed "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head". I cried and smiled trough the entire performance! I bet it would be staggering to know just how many tears of joy and smiles she brought to this world! Im sure she will do the same with her Lord in Heaven!

Dana, Chris and Connor - The service yesterday was truly a celebration of Life of your beautiful Alexa and Uncle Stan verbalized so much of what Alexi was to all of us. She is an angel who has blessed our lives for 10 years and now is watching over us as she shares her joy with those in heaven. There is a previous entry referring to the Stars in the evening sky as openings from our loved ones sharing light..I too, will be looking for the newest, brighest pink glow Star in the sky, it will be Lexi's Star! Our prayers are continue to be with all of you.

I wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am sorry I could not be at the service. I also lost my son 5 years ago and it just brings up too much emotion. The good thing is that you will cherish all those good times too and know you did all you could. Friend of your mother.

To know Alexa is to love Alexa. From the first day Alexa walked into my kindergarten classroom, I was charmed by her bubbly personality and her beautiful smile.
She has entertained me, amazed me, and won my heart entirely over the last four years. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of her life. Alexa, so bright, inquisitive, and wise beyond her years, will always have a special place in my heart.
You made everyday life a celebration and I have learned so much from all of you. What a wonderful little girl, and what a wonderful family!
God Bless You All!
You are always in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Mrs. D.

SLOW DANCE
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,"Hi"
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over

I hope we all have time to hear the music as Alexa did!!!!
