Hi!
Reading about Bella's adventures gives me such hope for the future! Our daughter Anisa will be turning 4 this week and was dx with HS 3 years ago. Her life has been relatively incident free despite the diagnosis. Just wantes to say thank you for such a positive outlook.

God Bless.

Hi! I follow a lot of children with Hurlers syndrome. My daughter Amrah was diagnosed 5 years ago now, she will be 6 in September and was very interested when I read that Bella had lost her molars at a young age. Amrah has lost 2 in the past week and your story sounds very familiar. So glad to here your princess is well. God Bless you and your beautiful baby girl..

karen, hey. I havent seen you in forever. I did see Trista about 3 summers ago and she had told me a little about Isabella. Beautiful name by the way, it fits her perfect. Shes going to look like her mommy! She already does. I dont even know where to start. I would have to say you are my hero. You and your husband are very strong. If you made it through all of that your marriage will be a breeze. I saw your pics on myspace and you looked amazing on your wedding day. Congratulations. I have a 19 month old boy, Aidan and I cant even begin to imagine what i would do. He had stitches once and i cried. You are a strong woman and I know all those strong qualities will be passed on to your daughter. I wil put her in my prayers. I read through all of the journal entries and she has come along way. It is very good to read. I can just imagine you singing and dancing with her. hopefully she gets a voice like you too! Anyway, i thought i would let you know i am thinking of you and your family and praying all goes well. Take care. love you.

This is the first time we have visited your site. Isabella is beautiful and an inspiration to us all. Our daughter Kaylee was diagnosed with MPS-1, and underwent a cord-blood transplant at Duke Nov.2005. Kaylee is 22 months old now. We are still in NC, but will be returning to our home in California in May. We will continue to follow Isabella's progress. She is absolutely precious.

Hi guys. Was thrilled to hear all the awesome news from Trista the other night. While she was telling me the conversation between her and KAren right after surgery I TOO began to cry as she described Bella not having to wear the body cast. What a relief, not only for Bella but for ma and pa. I was so worried about that. Having to watch your child suffer and struggle is sheer hell. I am praying for u all daily and hope to get over to see you as soon as you get home and start accepting visitors. SOOOO THRILLED for you all. Love yaz.

I don't know if Dr. Schwender told you this or not but there are a few Hurler chilren all coming in sometime in May for back surgery. Aaron is one of them. Aaron is actually having surgery on his scoliosis and not his kyphosis. His kyphosis is still okay. Well even though it won't be under the best of circumstances maybe we will be able to meet each other!!!

Hello Boo E n Karen,
iv been thinkin bout this post for while now because when you are around boo for so long you just can't stop smiling! Everytime i come back home from work she is the first one to greet me with her HIIIII! I'm sure when we were all little growing up we all had heros..they could be our parents or athletes..well i would say that little boo is my hero now..This little gem has been through soo much in her 1 and half years that it makes our complaints seem so small. Boo has taken all the challenges in stride...she still has the energy to be Bellazilla in bart's room with his games and nee nees ( candy canes) :D and im sure that she will take this challenge in stride as well.

HI I am not sure if you remember us but we lived at the RMH at the same time( we are from Louisiana, Marshall had the transplant but Amelia is our 3 year old who was there most often)But it seems now that Marshall has the same thing as your Bella---Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. We were told that this only happens to 10 to 15% of patients who have BMTs aren't we lucky :*( I have followed your story for a while now and when the doctor came to me and told me what he had a light bulb went off in my head and I thought I have heard of this before.......From one parent who know the struggles that you face..Know that we will keep your little star in our prayers as well as the rest of you!!!

Hi guys,
I was so glad to see your update. One gets worried when there is no news for to long. I am sooo sorry to hear of your car accident. You were just jealous of all the attention given to Bella weren't you. HEHEHEHEHE
Also wanted to let you know that actually, the IVIG, is to BOOST her immune system. It is an infusion of antibodies spun off of donated blood (it takes about 500 pints of blood to make one dose of IVIG!!). It will replace immunoglobulins that she has yet to make due to the transplant. The immunoglobulins fight things like viruses and bacterial infections, each one has a specific job to do. By giving her donated ones, she is getting a dose of anitbodies that have been developed against many of the current and common germs that can make Bella very sick. I have 2 kids that have gotten these infusions (actually, my oldest is still getting them, 4 years later). Hope that helps, and I hope it helps with her platlets!!

Bella you are on your way home!(yippie!!) Grams just felt you could do it,you are so brave and strong, and a child of God for sure, which brings to mine Grams will write you something.
You are the roses in life's bouquet
Filling our hearts with joy each day,
And when trials and troubles come our way,
They bring us comfort as we pray.
We are the daffodils,bright-yellow tones;
They bring us laughter and cheer us on,
Changing our sadness into a happy song.
We are the liacs, fragrant and sweet-
A gift from God to make life complete.
He knew we'd need someone by your side
To share His love, as in Him we abide.
Roses and lilacs and daffodils-
They help to weather life's troubles and ills.
Everyone can laugh with or cry with you...
Thank God for you that's kind and true.

Baby proofing! What a wonderful job! I think it is perfectly normal to check out your new neice. I'm surprised they haven't done testing. I find myself even checking non relitives children. We had a little boy who was very sick in our church and some of his features sent red lights off in my heart. I found my self checking his corneas to reassure myself that he was ok. I am sure this paranoia is just a side effect of what we have been through. Think how safe all the babies will be that grow up near us! Keep up the good work Isabella

Hi! (WELCOME HOME)
Well like I said,Bella went to her bedroom and sure enough
the Care A Bears went on the floor.LOL but whats so great is to see her walk and crawl and getting around well enough to do so.It so heart warming just to hold her, play with her,but the worst was leaving, she wanted to go with and started to let us know it too, started to fuss, cry so had to leave on that note.(:( But will be there tomorrow, and Grams will bring some goodies for Mommy and BellaBoo.Love to you Bella and keep up the good progress and you will make history. love Grams see you tomorrow.

TO BELIEVE is to know that every day
is a new beginning.
It is to trust that miracles happen,
and dreams really do come true.

To believe is to see angels dancing among the clouds,
to know the wonder of a stardust sky
and the wisdom of the man in the moon.

To believe is to know the value of a nurturing heart,
the innocence of a child's eyes
and the beauty of an aging hand,
for it is through their teachings we learn to love.

To believe is to find the strength
and courage that lies within us when it is time
to pick up the pieces and begin again.

To believe is to know we are not alone,
that life is a gift
and this is our time to cherish it.

To believe is to know that wonderful surprises
are just waiting to happen,
and all our hopes and dreams are within reach.

"If only we believe."

My thoughts and prayers remain with you all as Bella-B continues to recover at home. You have many thanks to give during this season of Thanksgiving. May God continue to protect and watch over you all!!

It was great getting to see you all
Friday. Boo, you are such a treasure!
Thanks for being such a special little
girl! Thanks for the smiles!

“My heart is smiling”

My heart is smiling today
As Faith has come such a long, long way.
God only knows what she’s been through
And the roads yet traveled to feel brand new.

My heart is smiling today you see
Because Faith fought her way back to be.
I held her little hand in mine,
Seems as if it’d been such a long, long time.

My heart is smiling today I know
All outward signs would tell you so.
It’s an internal grin that shines right through
And Faith its there because of you!

My heart is smiling today, its great
Boo gave me a chance to renew my faith.
If doubt I had about Gods’ grace
It’s gone right now because of Faith.

So thank you Boo for this big smile
And the faith you gave to last the while
Thank you Bella for lighting the way
And the smile on my heart that’s there to stay

Good Morning Boo and Kids! First, if I offended anyone by my last entry, I'm sorry. I have nothing but love and admiration for those souls caught up in a life of dealing with Hurlers. Anyone who knows me at all would never JUMP to such a conclusion. Love and prayers to all!

I know that life at RMDH is tough on people.
Being around all the sickness and dispair that
arises from your situation would be enough to test
even the strongest of faith. Why is this happening to
me and the ones I love? I can't answer that for you kids.
But I'll leave you with something to think about.
Mari always wondered what I did with my poems, well I
share them with the people I love and those who love
me back. This one just might fit the times. For better or
worse.

Sitting in Faith

Sitting here alone I wonder,
What would the children do
If the ones sent to protect them
Where afraid like me and you

Sitting here I ponder
The scary world around
That every day seems worsened
By the ever shifting sound.

The sound of people crying
Over things they can not change.
The sound of people weeping
As they find themselves to blame.

Then I sit here bravely knowing
That the things we can not change
Are the things God does to test us
That make us human beings.

So I’d tell my loving children
Not to sweat the little stuff
But to instill in their own children
Faith in God’s enough!

I had originally planned to visit as many caringbridge sites as possible, and leave some encouraging words, prior to my daughters passing. Unfortunately her passing came sooner than we had expected, but longer than any of her doctors expected.

Another angel takes flight.

My daughter Pam had a brain tumor and was fighting the fight since November 4th, 2002, after the birth of her daughter (Casey Morgan). My youngest daughter, Karen, set up a caringbridge website for Pam. Karen's friends mother shared a prayer with us, that I would like to share with you and Bella. It's called DON'T QUIT:
Don't Quit -
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit - Rest if you must, but do not quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor's cup. And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.(Just call on Jesus).

I would also like to share a saying that was on the card my wife Diane picked out, and we bought for Pam:

If you were a star
That wasn’t expected back
In the universe
For a thousand years,
I’d wait.

If you were the sky
And everyone went inside
When you got sad
And started to rain,
I’d stay.

And if you were a peach
And the world decided to get rid of all peaches,
I’d pick you up,
Put you in my pocket…

AND KEEP YOU…. FOREVER..

Prayers have scientifically been proven to work.

REMEMBER NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT. You are in our prayers. GOD bless you all.

Imaginase! A Wall that likes to eat. Whoda thunk it?
Hang in there Bella Boo and we'll all see you by Xmas.
I have faith in that. Not much happening at the club over thanksgiving, so Granpa will more than likely get to see you for a couple of days. I miss you all so much! I'll make sure and see if Brady can come with me so he can see you too. I know he misses his little sister a lot!
My thanks to everyone for their prayers for my little sister Mary Beth. She's out of ICU and in a regular room. Thats a miracle in my book and your prayers had a hand in it.

What Really Matters To Children

What really matters to children
You can see in an infectious smile.
You can hear in a child’s laughter
As they learn and play the while.

What really matters to children
Are the deeds that a father does
For the son or daughter given
By our Lord almighty above.

What really matters to children
Are the rules and guidelines set
To protect our precious loved ones
From the strangers yet unmet.

What really matters to children
Is unconditional love
Given freely by their parents,
Motivated only by real love.

But what matters most to our children
Is knowing without a doubt
That the arms that hold them tender
Will be there all throughout!

Good Morning to you all. It was good to see Everett and Brady this weekend. I get such a kick out of him. Its funny how some kids just make an impression on you that makes them more special. Im so glad to hear Bella is doing good. I cant even imagine what you are going through. With all of my past health problems I was always so thankful it was Me and not my kids going through it. I remember people always telling me God only gives you as much as you can handle and that would make me soooooo angry. At the time it seemed like I was way beyond what I could "handle". But its been almost 14 years now and I did handle it. Someday you will be able to look back and find some good things that happened. Keep up the love for her AND each other, if you can make it through this you can conquer the world!!!! We love you all, THE P's

Sorry I missed your message E!

TO MY GRANDDAUGHTER
I'm looking at a miracle,
God sent to bring us pleasure;
Another chapter in life's book,
Bringing joy beyond all measure.
There's nothing like a grandchild,
Especially a little girl;
She wraps your heart with heartstrings,
And captivates your world.
She dances into your very soul,
All ruffles, dollies and lace;
You melt into a puddle,
With one look from that little face.
She wraps you 'round her finger,
And plays with you like a toy;
But that's the reason God gave her,
To bring her grandparents joy.
This heritage of our heritage,
This blessing all giggles and fun;
Was sent by God as a special gift,
Our precious little one.

Allison Chambers Coxsey

Take care and Godspeed! Love Dad

Hello sweet Bella! Your mommy's story reminded me of our friend...Marybeth had cancer of her leg and most of her calf is "cut out"...she often gets stares from people...she said she does not mind when children look as they are indeed curious and will even ask her and she explains to them why her leg is like that....but one time they were at the beach and these people kept staring at her leg...she held it up and said "SHARK BITE"!...that ended the stares!

Hope each day continues to improve for you! xxxooo

I'm pretty sure that Bella Boo knows how many people she has enlightened with her smile. Children are so very perceptive. She can tell by the looks returned to her how much joy she brings to others. I know in my heart that she can see the love that the two of you have for her just by the smiles you give her and the love that is so evident in your eyes when she looks into your souls.
Thanks for the new pictures! Take care and Godspeed!!!!

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile,A kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment,or the smallest act of caring, all have the potential to turn a life around. When Everett left me a picture of Bella this past weekend, he left me Bellas beautiful smile. Every time I look at that smile I can't help but bust out into one of my own. What power her smile has, to fill an old mans heart with such joy. Thank you and Godspeed. Love, Dad

Hi Bella and Karen,Everett
Just sending you a recipe for a Happy Day

1-cup of friendly words
2-cups of understanding
4-heaping tablespoons of time
A pinch of warm personality
A dash of humor
Mix well and serve generous portions
You never gain weight just Love
Taste and see that the Lord is good.

This is a good prayer to keep on hand
Lord, give me patience when wee hands
Tug at me with their small demands.
Keep my lips from hasty replies.
Let not weariness,confusion,or noise
Obsure my vision of life's fleeting joys.
There is only one thing more exciting than becoming a Grandmother... becoming a Great-Grandmother.And holding a great-grandchild like you makes getting old worthwhile. The Lord has done great things for you and we are filled with joy.Thank be to all the prayers and God Bless all the helping hands that prayed for dear sweet Bella. We LOVE YOU.
Keep up the good work. God Bless All

Bella-B
This morning when I wakened
And saw the sun above,
I softly said, "Good morning, Lord,
Bless everyone I love."
And right away I thought of you
And said a loving prayer,
That He would bless you special
And keep you free from care.
I thought of all the happiness
A day could hold in store,
I wished it all for you because
No one deserves it more.

Love you!

What great news! This is Joseph's MoM. We got back from Laramie late last night and the first thing I did was check in on Bella. I check this site daily but haven't written but I thought I let you know Trista looks radiant and healthy...not quite the fat tummy Grandma is expecting yet. But we did try to help out the cause by feeding her well and filling up the refrigerator. She is missing her family and wishing she could be with all of you. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Bella, I am not sure what happened to my comments, I was typing, so I hope it doesn't appear twice. You don't know me,I am on your Aunt's Home and Garden loop. I just wanted you to know, that God still does miracles. At my church, I have seen a man healed of MS, and my husband was healed of a non-union broken leg he suffered with for four years! The bible says By his stripes we are healed, I believe God can touch your little body and make you well. Mom and Dad, pray together over your precious baby as she sleeps each night, God answers prayer! You will also be in my prayers! Sincerely, Kristen Nelson

Justing checking in. I just showed Riley Bella on the computer....he was so cute, saying baby Bella and blowing kisses! And wanting to see more pictures of Bella! Those are some great pictures. Have a quiet weekend and be glad that she has the fever in the hospital and not when you are out...I am sure the nurses and aides have told you that! Keep your spirits up!

Hi Bella and family,
This is my first time signing your guestbook, but I have checked in on your journal from time to time. I am glad Bella is enjoying her "halltime". Hope you get to leave soon, but patience I know is sometimes hard to come by. Your desciption of Bella's surprise fever seemed a little familiar. Could she be having a reaction to one of her meds. My youngest son had the weirdest reaction to the use of tylenol for his fevers. After the first regular dose, I had to half the next dose and subsequent doses or his temp would go up. He would not feel anymore hotter, but the thermometer read higher. Since Bella was going in the hall, happy, not lethargic, and then suddenly her temp was higher I just wonder if there is a pattern with her taking her meds. Take Care and I hope you get answers soon.

Don't rush getting out, I know as bad as you want out, be patient with the release. Sorry for the disappointment of going back before her surgery until she fell asleep. You must have had a nurse that didn't know. The anesthesiologist always asked me to go back and he told the nurse.....make sure they tell the nurse if in the case she needs to go to surgery again. Hang in there you are still doing a wonderful job.

Dear Karen and Everett...Happy Sunday! This is Sylvia from PA and I found your site through Hannah and Madeline Ritter's page. Wanted to let you know our family will be praying for your little Isabella...what a beautiful name!

Our prayer for your this evening ~

Thank you Lord for Karen, Everett, Brady and Bella. Thank you for being with them through this very trying time. We ask that you protect them. Keep Bella free from all germs during this incubation period. Any "little boy" germs Brady may bring with him, we know that You will miraculously keep them outside Bella's room, as You know how important it is for Bella to have that special time with her big brother. Send your Guardian Angels to this beautiful family. Let them feel the angels wings wrapped around them keeping them safe. Allow them to feel Your comforting warmth and love to get them through each coming day. Amen.

Love, Sylvia

Just checking in, the fevers are terrible, but they also mean that the cells could be starting to engraft!!!!! Nolan ran 102-107 for about eight or nine days straight as he started to engraft, we also had a bad case of the mucositis. We will be praying that Bella is engrafting well and the fevers will go away. Love, The Ramsey's

Hi-When I read that you call your beautiful daughter Bellaboo, I knew I had to write. My nickname was Boo for at least the first 6 years of my life and to this day my mom sometimes refers to me as "AnnieBoo." I also had dark hair and eyes (although the hair is lighter now as I have aged and need to cover the gray-ha ha!) Another similarity is that I too loved my food!! It sounds as if your little girl is truly wonderful and I hope and pray that she is soon healthy and enjoying life. Stay strong and I will check in on your very special "Bellaboo" from time to time to see how she is progressing!

Hi, I got your address from Mighty-Max's page. Our son, Riley - four years old, is one year post his second transplant for Hurlers. Both were in Minnapolis last year. I recommend the tube, Riley had both the NJ and NG during his transplants. I know the tube isn't pretty and not what you want on your beautiful little girl's face, but you get used to it, after all, at least she is getting the food that she needs. Riley didn't eat for about four months. We used it from July to June for meds...he was way to smart for taking them orally as he would spit them out or lick his tongue on something. With the tube, we knew he got all the meds. After we took it out, it took people a while to realize it was gone. I will add you guys to our prayer list and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Keep your faith and all will be fine. I wish you the best during this journey and remember "He lead you to it, He will see you through it."

Congratulations Bella, let the goodtimes roll, we will be praying for a smooth ride from here on out. It can be pretty scary sometimes but know Jesus is right there with you at every turn. Regarding the NG tube, Nolan had one for the first few days for some oral meds, then he pulled it out right before the transplant. Once he was on TPN they nixed the tube, and he did not eat another bit until two weeks after we were out of the hospital, but the TPN was enough he did not lose any weight while on TPN. Personaly I did not like the NG tube. Nolan did have one again while in PICU, but not for feeding. Anyway hope that helps. Remember you always have a choice in what they are doing to Bella you are her voice and if you do not agree with something you can say something.

Hi! My Bella had an NG tube put in around the same time as your Bella and it didn't bother her too much after a while. And they do help with oral meds that tastes bad. My only concern would be that it can be a pathway for infection once her counts drop off. I would just make sure that they remove it if she continues to eat well or picks up on her calories. I would ask them to remove it if it proves unnecessary. And those are my two cents!

Just checking in on Bella, ATG was rough one for Nolan, that was his first time to throw up also, He would throw up and then continue to play, I don't think they know they are supposed to feel bad. Even when the engraftment hit, Nolan still smiled and played with 107 temprature. I pray Bella can rest easy and still keep smiling. \

Hello Isabella,

My family and I got met your daddy briefly in the hallway of 4A last week and then were introduced to your web-site by the Ciacciarelli family. I also was transplanted in Minnesota for Hurler Syndrome -- almost three years ago!

You are a real cutie pie and doing such a wonderful job with this transplant business! Hang in there with that nasty ATG ... it is yucky stuff, but once it gets through your system you'll feel as good as new! Keep up the good work and know you are in wonderful hands with all of the nurses and doctors up there on the unit.

Hi guys, just checking in again. I'm sorry to hear that Bella has a fever. I'm saying extra prayers tonight that it will soon go away. I really miss holding her. I enjoyed my time with Bella at the park when you guys were playing volleyball. What a joy she is. Hang in there and give her an extra kiss and hug from me. Sleep tight.

You know, in the little time I had to get to know you all, I instantly fell in love with Bella. How anybody could not, I would never know. To see how adorable it was when I saw you, Karen, leave Bella for just a short couple of hours (so you and Everette could have dinner together) and watching you run back into the room before leaving as many times as possible with any excuse ever heard of, just to say 'good-bye' and 'I love you!' one more time. You are such a great mother! No wonder Bella is so strong!! You guys are great and I wish you the best! You will stay in my prayers!

Hi Bella, this is the Ramsey's, our son Nolan has Hurler also and we are day 109 from transplant here at Duke. Nolan had a few complications but is doing great now and we anticipate going home around August 8th. We will be following your progress and praying that the Lord will keep you safe.

We heard about Isabella from Max's website. Glad to hear she's doing okay with Chemo, that hopefully means she'll have easy sailing through transplant.

Hi my name is Cathy Peters. I just heard about your family through Max's webpage. I was amazed to read of your daughter- my daughter's name was Isobel (Scottish spelling) and we also called her Bella. Sadly, our Bella passed away on April 10 from complications of her BMT for Hurler's. I will follow your story and pray for you guys and a successful transplant.

Karen, Everett, and Bella,
We'll be meeting little Bella soon enough on the unit, but it was great to meet her Daddy today. Our son Max is here at the Ronald McDonald House too, and is only two weeks or so behind your little beauty for transplant. Here's to the best of health for both kids, and we hope that they become fast friends. Let us know if there is anything we can do.

Lots of love,

Mike, Margaret, Grace, and Max Ciacciarelli <http://www.mighty-max.com>

Everett, Karen, Bella and Brady. I just want you all to know that you have all my love and suport. For those of you that don't know. Everett and I have been more then just best friends for that past 10 years. He's been more like a brother to me. Someone I would give my life if it would save or help his in anyway. Bella is the most beautiful little girl I've seen since my daughter was born. She has all the best parts of Karen and Everett in her. She will not only make it through this, but be the toughest little chika in the whole world. So for all those who read this. Just keep this family in your heart, minds and prayers. As for Everett, Karen and family. They know the have my love. John Sigmund
