Atlanta, GA - Monday, May 16, 2011 11:50 AM CDT
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

I pray that you will have a time of peace. May God give you all the comfort that you need during this time.

I will continue to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

I updated Jake's classmates today on his struggle. Without me saying a word - one after the other of his peers came to tell me how they were praying. I looked around and saw some heads bowed and arms folded. It swelled my heart. Jake is soooo loved. He has always been such a great ... great gift. I am boldly praying for a miracle; however, more than that, as the medicine and the ICU and you all and Jake fight, I pray for you to feel God's peace, the rest he offers, and His amazing love. You are an awesome family and it is reflected in how you share the experience with all - and in the wonderful son you helped to create and who has made such an impact on all of us. Love and continued prayers to all of you - especially you Jake ... you know we love you!

Our son, Ben, our two Labradors and I got Cancer around the same time. I found toxic levels of ARSENIC, MANGANESE & IRON in our drinking water. The STATE tells people to test SPIGOT water. The demon was in the water heater sediment, but comes thru the SPIGOT when water is churned up. Now, lots of people are checking their water heater sediment, since they can not get to their well tank sediment. STATE of GA says that over 27% of water tested has some ARSENIC in it. Over 7% had TOXIC LEVELS OF ARSENIC. Over 16% of water in GA tested for URANIUM had TOXIC LEVELS. People have Cancer relapses because they keep drinking the TOXIC WATER. Please read my son's website www.caringbridge.org/visit/benmcmahan and please ask me to be your facebook friend. Janet McMahan My picture is of me surfing. Ag & Enviro Svcs who told Ext Agents about the TOXIC WATER FINDINGS said they did not want to alarm the public... My husband, Dr Howard McMahan and I think they are OBLIGATED to WARN THE PUBLIC. Don't hesitate to call my office if you do not understand something. 229-468-9903 May God Bless JAKE and ALL That You Love!!! We were at Memorial Sloan Kettering as well... Praying for your family and knowing that God is in control. Jake, as well as the rest of your family, have had such strength and determination thru these 10 years and you have all been an inspiration for those of us looking in from the outside. These words were told to my mother during her cancer battle and I've never forgotten them and I hope that they can give you the comfort that they gave to her and to us -- "Never forget in the valley what you have learned at the mountain top". Hang in there Jake--look back up at that mountain. Prayers and comfort to your family.

hurry up & then wait. that's the way it goes. things move fast there. you have to stay on top of ways to get where you need to be test-wise. sometimes it takes some creativity. you are no stranger to finding a way & coming up with an alternative. the only thing that sucks there is that it is research based so you have to "make the cut" or you're out. it can be very frustrating at times. from a research stand point it makes sense, but as a parent...there is nothing that makes sense about why there is nothing available to help your sick child. hang in there. praying for lower liver enzymes. you all remain in my prayers.

Wow, you guys have been through the wringer lately. Goodness... I'm glad Jake is back to school. I can't believe you guys are starting school so early. What a blessing that he came through all of this and is back at it. What a true fighter he is. My hero!!

I hope you get the support from the doctors in Atlanta that you need. That ego thing is absolutely ridiculous and should have nothing to do with the care of Jake. I would stomp him if he gave me attitude! Good luck and hopefully a beat-down is not necessary! haha

Looks like Trent and Canon just missed you all. They are at Sloan this week. They hit the Yankees/Red Sox game today at the new stadium, which was exciting (except for the loss part). Keep in touch. I know it is hard and things are busy. I will watch for more Miller updates!

hey jake, you are probably wondering who in the world I am haha. But I am Payne Alderman's sister; your brother Luke is one of Payne's teammates on the LHS baseball team. Anyways, my dad just informed me of your condition, and I know we don't know each other but that doesn't stop me from praying for you. I pray that God watches over you through everything you're going through and I pray that he installs strength in you to overcome the obstacles coming your way. You obviously have so much strength because you've delt with this for so long. I know this is a risky disease but I believe that God is working with you instead of against you. Working to make you an example of how prayer can work, and with faith, and strength (and yeah medicine obviously helps lol), you can get through this. I want to also thank your dad too, he helped my brother get a scholarship at SCAD. Despite everything your family is going through, your dad was selfless enough to help out someone else. God be with you and prayers coming your way. Your strength and fight is admirable and respectable.
Take Care,

Jake: We've never met, but God lets us know you through our prayers for you and your family. You are such an inspiration to all of us. Your incredible strength and will power remind us that God has a plan for you and everyone. You help us remember how precious life is, how much we should appreciate our families and friends, and that life really is eternal for those who accept God's will and blessings and plans. Your Dad Lee is my friend, and I am proud to know him. He recently did such a great and unselfish thing for my son Payne, who plays on the Lowndes baseball team with Luke. Your Dad helped Payne get a chance to play college baseball, and for that we are so grateful. To Lee and family: We thank God for Jake, you and your family. We pray that Jake will fulfill God's will and plans. We know God hears our prayers, and He will provide for Jake and your family as y'all continue to fight this battle. May the incredible power of His strength, comfort and blessing pour over Jake and your family. We don't know when or how, but God's miracle is coming for Jake -- of that there is no doubt.

Hey Jake - I know that I'm just your "mushy" old teacher, but ... you are just so missed! I miss hearing the stories of your adventures. You are like Indiana Jones or something ... the way you face each obstacle and fly over it or crash through it or bulldoze it over. Gosh, I know you have to be tired ... just don't forget that the hero always gets the gold and the girl and the glory in the end - even if he has to do a lot of "sequels" to get there. Tell Mom and Dad or Luke to let me know if we can do anything or send you anything - I'd love an e mail sometime if you get a chance - ya know ... practice your writing. LOL When testing calms down ... hope to see some of you all at the ballpark. Lots and Lots of thoughts and prayers to you and the family.

Lee, Kim & Jake - I do not know if I have ever posted on your guestbook or not, but I have been following your journey for a very long time now. My son was diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 10, and someone told me about Jake shortly after that time. Obviously, we gravitate toward other "older" NB patients, as their cases are so incredibly different from the younger ones. I also know Beth & Jack White very well; we are St. Jude patients and Beth reached out to me very early in Sam's treatment. She has been a rock for me ever since. I just wanted to tell you that I'm praying the MIBG therapy worked a miracle for you. I have a feeling we will be headed that direction ourselves at some point down the road, although our doctor is not a huge fan of MIBG treatment. Sam has never been NED (it's been 3 1/2 years since his diagnosis) but we've been fortunate that his disease is slow growing and we've been able to control it with lower toxicity drugs. However, this past week we learned that the drug he has been on for the past several months has stopped working and he has 2 tumors that are growing. The most worrisome one is behind his sternum, just to the right of the center of his chest, and is touching the pulmonary artery. We must get control of this one immediately to prevent problems, so we have an appt on Thursday (1/21) with our radiation oncologist. He thinks that he can hit it with radiation so we're hopeful. Otherwise I was pushing for MIBG therapy ASAP. Please keep us in your prayers - Jake is an inspiration to me!

I am an old friend of Rhonda Hicks. She and I met in high school(maybe even jr. high).I joined her group to hear updates on your progress and hope and pray this finds you in good spirits and well.
I have never personally experienced the trial you are facing. I feel so deeply for your parents having had a child of my own with something only God could manage. I more than applaude you all in your efforts to get the message out on research dollars & what we as soilders of Christ should do for each other. I'm behind,...no, beside you all the way.

Hi Jake, The last time I saw you I think you were four years old. I knew your mom way back when in high school. She and I were in the same homeroom and we had a very eccentric homeroom teacher. Her name was Mrs. Dunne and she was very entertaining(ask your mom about her). Your mom was very sweet in high school and a great friend. She and I used to get a hall pass from Mrs. Dunne almost every day so that we could go buy Recess Peanut Butter Cups from one of the coaches. I hope that you have a really cool homeroom teacher like your mom and I had!

Lee, you are right, this sucks. I hate cancer too! I am glad that you and Kim will be there together. It seems almost a miracle that this "marker" is on the rise after all the treatment that should keep it down. Should it remain so ... Jake the kid that has told me about his fight for life (his words), will use whatever ammunition he can. Goliath may be huge and have a lot of armor and many weapons (and scare the heck out of us) ... but little David took him down with a sling shot and a stone. Jake and you are not in this alone ... pick up the sling shot and leave the rest to the One who has already won. Whatever course you choose ... I am soooo praying ... they say love heals and believe me Jake is so loved by so many - especially this humbled teacher.

Hey Jake,
I am an old friend of your Dad's. We grew up from 1st grade all the way through high school.
Your dad was a warrior on the football field, and he tells me that you are as much of a fighter as he was. Your Grandfather was an inspiration to all of us that he ministered to as our chaplain.
Dude, I know that times can be hard, just know that there are people all over the country that are praying for your complete recovery.
The Lord tells us that when two or more are gathered in his name, there he shall be also. Jesus is with us and with you, and we believe that he can heal your body.
I look forward to meeting you someday when you all come to North Georgia but until then, just know that we have you in our hearts, thoughts, and our prayers.

I'm the teacher and you teach me more than I do you. Speaking of which ... as always, I need you back!!! The other students ask about you everyday, and we all went to this website and checked out your new picture and to find out how you are. It was amazing ... I heard three kids say, "I'm praying!" and more saying wow, "Jake is strong!" ... You are an inspiration to us all. I know that may not be so great to hear right now ... but, think about it as you continue the battle! We miss you ... I hear it every day ... over and over. I bet while I was out nobody said that much. Ha ... Hang in there!

Hey Jake! I found your website finally. I love the pictures! It's been a rough week without you at school ... I know everyone misses you. You wouldn't believe the lesson we had today - it was all about football. We just started it and so far it's pretty fun. I could really use your input though. Today everyone asked me when you would be back. You keep the laughter going!I worked the football game again tonight and we won ... of course. You know we are number two in the nation!!I think our new student moved again. We are pretty sure he won't be returning. I think we could have really helped him ... don't you? Coach stopped by at the football game and asked about you! He looks forward to you returning. You were soooo awesome on that basketball court. You make a great manager too. Next year we will really be ready.Know that we are all thinking about you. You are thinking about us right?? Ha ... The cafeteria crew asked about you. YOU KNOW WE MISS YOU THERE!! Double Ha ...
