My barely 2 year old nephew was diagnosed last month with a rare childhood cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. This has been very devastating to our family and is very heartbreaking. You can't feel how much pain it is unless it happens to you.
Unfortunately, there isn't much attention in Childhood Cancers since most of them are rare cancers. In effect, there isn't much studies and research done for their cure.
I signed the petition "Cure Childhood Cancer - Another Inconvenient Truth". I'm asking you to sign this petition to help us reach our goal of 1,000,000 signatures. I care deeply about this cause, and I hope you will support our efforts. Thank you!

Cure Childhood Cancer - Another Inconvenient Truth
Target:
News media (e.g. 20/20, Dateline, 60 Min.) - we need to tell our story!
Sponsored by:
CureSearch & Texas Children's Hospital

RAISE AWARENESS & FUNDING FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER
Childhood Cancer Facts

- Childhood cancer is the #1 killer disease of our children, more than from asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies, and pediatric AIDS combined

- 1 in 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20
- Each year 3,000 children die, and 35-40,000 are in treatment

- The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) federal budget was $4.6 billion. Of that, breast cancer received 12%, prostate cancer received 7%, and all 12 major groups of pediatric cancers combined received less than 3%

OBJECTIVE - RAISE AWARENESS

-Deliver signatures to ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and Fox and challenge every prime time, investigative or news media to produce a special devoted solely to childhood cancer.

- The show will RAISE AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEM and show how special these kids are. Show how they face fear, pain, boredom and the unknown, many times for years on end. They may live or die, yet each will forever impact those around them in ways beyond their years.

You can make a difference. You can help. Please sign.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and uplifting story. Ty is a miracle. It is reassuring to meet people who have had the same things occur and have lived despite what people say or think. We are lucky this tumor burst too. She would've died and we wouldn't have known why. I am lucky in many ways. We aren't done fighting. This tumor is fighting back because of the anaplasia. I guess it makes it a "smart" tumor and it adapts well to the chemo attacks. But we are going to get it out soon! Did Ty have trouble walking at all? She has some gait problems now and perhaps a little balance problems. Did he lose any of his organs? Well...thank god for your victory against this! You have a handsome young man and you must be very proud of him!

My friend Jennifer gave me a copy of Michael's and his family journal.God bless you and your children always. I can only say that your journal was/is all too familiar to me. My husband, Curtis and I have experienced an amazing journey to GOD...I know that I could have not gotten through the last four months without God's amazing grace and love. I can only wish that we would have recognized that we truly needed God to guide us a long time a long time ago. I did not keep a journal, only memories that I will never forget.....I woud like to share our journey... My son Dylan is wanting me right now to do something for him.

A giraffe looks in my window
At the same time everyday,
He just appears with silly ears,
When I turn on the light to play.

I tell him the things I do at two
While he munches and crunches the leaves,
That are so very tasty too,
From the tippy tops of the trees.

One night he didn’t look so good,
His eyes were filled with pain.
I asked him, "What is the problem, the food?"
He said, "I must explain!"

"My knees are hurting pretty bad
And my long neck is so sore.
I really do like our talks,
But I can't take much more!
If you do a favor for me,
I know how my pain will be free.

CAN YOU MOVE UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR!!!

Hi Audra, I knew that Ty had been through so much. But I didn't know his story of diagnosis. WOW, thank you for sharing that. I don't know why, we as Mom's dwell on anniversaries like this. I think that is why I dread this time of year as well. Even though it took us two years to get a diagnosis, I feel like since diagnosis we have been through hell. Some of that hell is getting better. FINALLY. But there is no hell like watching your child suffer, to be reduced to skin and bones and see them age emotionally before your very eyes. I don't think that those who have never been through it can really, and truly understand what kind of hell that is. To watch your child cling to life. No, Lauren hasn't been on the brink of death physically, but she has looked at me and told me if she didn't have the family she does that life wouldn't be worth living.
I think that going through things like this in life is a type of trauma that most have no concept of how to live through. That is why it is sooo very important for those of us to have a clue to keep in touch and love eachother through the pain and the worry that is so exclusive to only things similar to these.
I know we don't know eachother well but I love you and your family and pray for Ty often and not to mention the peace you deserve.
Love,
Bridget

Hi Audra!
Wow, look at how handsome those two boys are. No wonder they are short chick magnets! They are just going to grow up and be big chick magnets someday. I pray his scans turn out well. I just know they will. We go to Shands in a week. I feel it almost pointless because well...what can they do? We will travel a really long way for refills. There are no new treatments for Juvenile Fibromyalgia. There are no cures. She will always hurt. She will always have pain. What can we do? But, this time at least we can show off to her doctor how much weight she has gained. We are up to almost seventy pounds! And when you think that in March when she got her feeding tube she was 48 at a week shy of being 11 years old. That is quite an accomplishment and we haven't done a tube feeding in a month and she is still gaining well. I am very thankful. Her hypermobility is better because of the extra weight, she has muscle holding in her spine now. You can't really ask for more can you? (Except a cure that is....) But, I am so glad to see you all had a good time. I will have to call Camp Boggy and see if they have a rheumatology family weekend and see if we can all go. That would be really awesome for three of us.
Love,

Hi Audra,
I am glad to see that your little man had such a good time at camp Boggy. Lauren gets to go August 7th. She is going to miss a week of school to go but since her diagnosis she and I have both CRAVED for her to be with kids just like her and it is so important. So she will miss a week of school and she needs this. So she will go. And that is that. :) I want to invite you and your family to the benefit for Lauren and our family. It is July 29th. The details are on our caring bridge site. You can email me with the details. I might call you tomorrow at the office with the details. It depends greatly on how well I am feeling. I am praying for a clean check up with Dr. Gowda. I hope all is well.

Hello Audra,
Thanks for updating, it was so good to read how things are going. :) I am glad for the most part things are going ok. I am sure that Dr. Bufo's face was a classic "huh". I love that man and respect him like no other surgeon.
I swear if either one of my kids needs anything that he is capable of doing I will drive for days to have him do it if it isn't an emergent procedure.
I am glad to see that Ty is doing so well other than that.
I understand what you mean about coming here to gain support from others going through similar things. I am not a mom to a child with cancer but I cannot imagine that it would be worse than what I go through with Lauren except that what she has doesn't really have a threat of killing her. (It just makes you wish you were dead.) And in Lauren's case there is no cure for what she has. She has been treated for two years and she hasn't "grown out of it" so she probably won't. But, I don't know if that is really better? No, your child's life may not be taken by the disease but possibly by the hell the disease causes. Hard to explain. I didn't get to come in the office yesterday. I ended up hauling Nathan off to the pediatrician for this third sinus/ear infection in the past six weeks. :(
Well, I hope all continues to be well.
Stop by and see Lauren's page when you can, I am much better at updating lately than in the past. www.caringbridge.org/visit/laurenetto
BTW, I lurk still as well. It is too hard when you get attached to these people and pray for them so vehemently to just let go and no longer support and pray. Also, the coward who wrote in her page will get their just rewards I truly believe that.

Dear Audra,
I haven't visited in a little while and didn't know that Ty-Michael had been having trouble with his stomach, with headaches and the lump on his neck. I'm so sorry that there always seem to be issues. Glad the surgery went well, and hope the biopsy showed no "C." Praying for good answers and resolution to all these issues and that the pain will stop.

Hi Audra,
I hope that Ty-Michael's surgery went well today. While you were praying for him I had Lauren at Dr. Adams office in Boca getting her gtube site cauterized. We were doing a weigh in and he says she is slowly gaining the weight she needs to gain. He said her face looks better and I updated him that I had to buy new clothes for her yesterday so that they were big enough around. I haven't ever done that in her entire life. I am in great need of updating my caring bridge site. I think I will do that tonight. It is so strange that we circled around the same circles you and I for so long and met in an insurance office. LOL I just checked cam's page for the first time since around the hurricane. I was devastated. I was with Michelle and Erik and had talked to Dr. Bufo before he was diagnosed the day he was diagnosed. I always couldn't believe how brave they were. They were so strong when I would have been freaking out.
I know my Lauren doesn't have cancer. I thank God that the disease she is afflicted with doesn't have the chance of killing her. But watching your beautiful child pace the floor in pain and cry and nothing touches it is another kind of hell all in its own.
I will have Lauren pray tonight for Ty-Michael's biopsies. Feel strong in the fact I will pray as well.
I hope this finds him feeling ok after the surgery and resting peacefully.

Hip hop, hippety hop
My “Easter Bunny” went off to the shop,
He bought me an egg and lots of chocs
And packed them into a cardboard box.
Then he wrapped it with paper and shiny string
It really was such a pretty thing.
Disaster struck when I opened the door-
He slid across the parquet floor,
He went round the corner and past the stairs
And finished up in a pile of chairs.
Of the Easter goodies not a trace,
he’d thrown them into my fireplace!
So a warning before you go opening doors
Make sure your “Bunny” has non-slip paws!

Happy Easter

With lots of love,

Everyone at Post Pals

His story offers hope to all kids with this cancer and how I wish that all of them could be survivors like him. God Bless You -- I know that he already has. Hope your Thanksgiving and the Holidays are wonderful.

Not true. You aren't the only one to read your journal. I'm so happy to hear about long term survivors. My Orville didn't make it, but each day and with each child they are getting closer to a cure. I just have to keep telling myself that. God bless, and give him a hug for me.

Sorry it took me so long to sign....It is Bridget. My phone line went down again...thanks to Wilma. Your words about when you used to cry and ask why??why? why?.... That is where I am at now. Why? Why do children suffer. There is no cure for my baby. Not even an effective treatment that lets her live any semblance of a normal life. People see her on "good" days and can't even believe she is sick. People tell me that if I just imagine her well in my prayers enough God will make it happen. I have always believed that this will be HER testimony to the grace of God. But will it be because she still loves with her whole heart even though this much pain would cause any true, loving, and pure heart to hate everyone? I pray that isn't the case but that He will free her from this prison of pain and agony. Every single muscle spasm she has I am ravaged by anger, hatred, sadness, fear and overwhelming love and compassion for my sweet, beautiful child. I am angry that this happened to her. I hate this disease and what it has done to this childs life. Overwhelming sadness because I long for healing. I want her well. I want her safe and to never have to worry about doing the things she loves or mundane things without worrying her neck will dislocate, someone will bump her and she will die or be paralyzed for life. This sucks too. I thought about starting a club for fibromyalgia but everyone would be too debilitated to show up for the meetings. LOL Sad thats funny.... Thanks for letting me vent....Thanks for visiting my caring bridge page. Love, Bridget PS...Thanks God for bringing us together.

Dear Audra, My name is Jean Johnson and I am on Rhabdokids list. I wanted to tell you that a few months ago someone figured out my password and was using my email to send out junk mail. AOL locked down our account and we all had to change our passwords. I am not sure what or who sent the email that got onto the Rhabdokids list but I thought I might share that with you. You might want to change your password. I follow Ty-Micheal and his story is an inspiration for Kameron and myself. Thank you for the updates. Congratulations on 5 years in remission. We hope to one day be there too.

Well hello there guys!!! Audra, I am so glad you have the link on the bottom of your email; sometimes I take for granted other pages and rely on word of mouth about how life is going for some of my friends...Ty Michael, you are huge! What a handsome guy you are. Major bummer about the ankle. So sorry-sounds like you are a very busy guy that is for sure. You are keeping your Mom young that is for sure too. Just wanted to drop over and say hello. Have a safe, fun, and spooky Halloween! Peace to you all, Love-Kathy

A: Winnie the Pooh!

Hi Ty-Michael! I found you via Zachary's guestbook. I hope you don't mind. I read the journal entry for May 22nd and the first journal entry. I got so mad reading about the fight with the bigger kid! Then I was surprised and upset to read about the tumor. Then I was relieved to read that you've been doing well. Now I'm exhausted! :) Keep being healthy!

Hi there. I came across your site from Maxies...and was of course drawn right in . I lost my Ty in 2001, and at that time had known of no other Ty's. Now, when I saw Ty Michael's site, I just had to visit.
You know, I can fully understand the pain you are feeling, the woes you have, and the crosses you bear since your son was saved by his treatment. The only solution I have for you is this...
It was not your fault that he got sick, it is not your fault he got better, and it's not your fault that kids like Maxie and Jake are not recovering. God has a plan, and that plan including Ty getting better. End of story.
The worrying about other kids is normal, but you can't let it turn back on you, making you feel guilty. Turn those feelings over to God, tell him to take care of them because you can't seem to do it alone. Let him help you, and know that God has a plan...all the time, everyday, every night...God has a plan.
Best wishes for you and your Ty, I hope that belly ache is nothing!

Audra,
I've always wondered why we had to wait for test results too. I honestly think that cancer etc has just become second nature to doctors. They deal with it all the time & sometimes forget that we don't. They deal with "patients" we're dealing with our babies. I was a thorn in Ryan's doctors side when I needed to be, and having Kaiser Health, that was pretty often. I don't know if it helped the medical situation, but it made me feel better. (I might add that it was only 1 doctor who I had a problem with...unfortunately he was the head oncologist..
the rest were great!) I truly hope that the news is good & the wait is brief. I'm here if you need to talk.

Love,
Pat

Hi,

I just happened to see your site on Zachary's and thought I would stop by and congratulate you. That is fantastic news about your remission....We have added you to our ever growing prayer list and will say a prayer for you every day. We discovered Protocel right after our little girl was diagnosed and given only a couple of months to live. Modern medicine could do nothing except prolong it a few months, they said. You should see her, she is doing absolutely FANTASTIC.

We'll stop back by and say hi every now and then. You have a GREAT day tomorrow and have fun playing football.

Oh man Mom I am with you on the loss of Anthony & Jalen. Sent me into a tailspin, cant even begin to imagine the familes involved. Its unreal. I pray you will find out what is going on. My friends daughter had kind of similar symptoms but she turned out to have not only the parvovirus but also 3 gallstones.... I just hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

I am praying for you today that the scans will go well. I am not sure about Father's Day. It probably is a no go because I have just not been feeling well so I am trying to lay low. It completely depends on how I am feeling. I pray that dear Michael will be able to have a great summer and you too! You both seem so energetic. It would be awesome if these kids were transparent or if a doctor just lived in the house with all those neat little machines! You learn a lot about everyone when you drop by and read their pages so lurking is okay. You get to know a lot about a person by listening or in this case reading. Love, Tracy

Just checking in to see any new news. Keeping Ty-Michael in our prayers.
The only way to win this and have no other parent go through what we all have been through is for a 100% cure rate to ALL childhood cancers. God I pray so hard for that one as well. I also pray that we will never have to attend another funeral again......been to way to many this year.
Hang in there. Know we are all thinking of Ty and his family.
Much Peace Prayers Love and HOPE for a cure for ALL childhood cancers

Hi to all - I want to go to camp with Alex - Wow, that sounds like so much fun!!! Audra, I have no advice to give you on Ty, other than my 3 children seem to have the same "syndrome"! So when you find a cure, please let me know! (lol) Personally, I wouldn't change a thing. If he has a big heart, I'd say you've done everything just right. ********'He's My Son'********
--by Christian recording artist--Mark Schultz

I'm down on my knees again tonight
I'm hoping this prayer will turn out right
See there is a boy that needs your help
I've done all that I can do myself,
His Mother is tired
I'm sure you can understand
Each night as he sleeps
She goes in to hold his hand,
And she TRIES not to cry
As the tears fill her eyes

Can you hear me?
Am I getting through tonight?
Can you see him?
Can you make him feel all right?
If you can hear me,
Let me take his place somehow
See, he's not just anyone,
He's my son.

Sometimes late at night I watch him sleep
I dream of the boy he'd like to be
I try to be strong and see him through
But God knows, who he needs right now is You.
Let him grow old
Live life without this fear
What would I be
Living without him here???
He's so tired and he's scared
Let him know that you're there.......

WE LOVE YOU TY-MICHAEL

Hey Audra, a friendly hello is the best thing to say. I, like Scott can not put it in to words but "it sucks" is one of them. I am connected with a number of other parents around the world (via cyber space)who have lost children to cancer and many of them feel that there are no words but a simple "I am sorry for your loss and know that I care" is always appropriate. This does not ask anything more from us (parents who have lost children)but lets us know you are thinking of us and you care.
Thanks for letting us know that you care and it was good to see all of you at Mitchell Mania.
PS who would ever thought we would meet again like this (after Scott shot the story with Ty!)

I haven't been sleeping a lot lately also. It is hard to forget where we were not too long ago. Hello Ty Michael, Alex, Audra and Tim

Well it looks as though the Buc’s are on there way to the Super Bowl. I’m a Raiders fan now. I’m the fan of any team playing the Buc’s. Hey, I said it before, I’m honest, don’t hold it against me Tim! I’m just jealous, it’s because the Vikings are watching it from the comforts of there very own living room. I’m praying that God will continue to keep you all in the palm of his hand.

Dear Ty Michael, Alex, Audra and Tim,

First things first. Tim, I'm a Viking fan and always will be. So with that said I could never ever cheer for the Buc's, sorry. Its because they were in our division for so long that I developed an attitude towards them. Anyway honesty is the best way to start a friendship! Audra, keep counting your blessings and praise God for all he has done for Ty and the family. After walking through the fire and persevering he equipped you with an understanding we all may have not ever had seen before. Hope we see you in church this week. Hey, I think the boy's need to have something to care for themselves, like a dog or even a cat, hint! Keeping you in our pasture of prayers.

Hi! I'm Michele Finck, mom to Ryan who is 8 years old and was diagnosed in Jan 1999 with ALL Leukemia. He just finished his 3 years of chemo in March 2002. Now we are trying to adjust to a "normal" life. It is scary. I read your journal entries and I feel like I am speaking. Your fears and thoughts are so similar to mine (and many others I am sure). I don't think we ever get over the day our lives were turned upside down by the words "childhood cancer". I am still numb when I hear those words. I had my first son (Tyler Michael) on Jan 21, 1991 and we found out he had a heart disease that was fatal. He only lived for 5 days and it was devastating. Ryan was diagnosed on Tyler's 8th birthday on Jan 21, 1999. Ryan is doing wonderful and has overcome so many odds. I believe his brother in heaven has his hand on him. Even though Ryan is cancer free at the moment.....the fear is still there. Every day, all the time. It's like a monster that is sleeping and could wake at any moment. I better stop or I'll take up a whole page! If you'd like to learn more about my son Ryan, you can visit him at his webpage!

Hello Ty Michael, Alex, Audra and Tim,
Sorry I haven't been by for a while. I'm sure you understand though. Family reunions are always fun. Get to see all those little nieces and nephews that seem to grow faster than the weeds in our gardens! "Bear" was a great suggestion but it's a little "girl". Ryon is leaning towards (see his own entry to his guestbook)Maggie. Come on Audra, my wife has allergies and we have 1 dog, 1 coming and 2 cats. Stop making excuses and get the boys a nice "little" dog. They'd love ya even more for it!

Keeping you guys in our thoughts and prayers...

Dear Schmidts, How we rejoice with you and Ty's good health. His success is so good to see...we pray it continues for an entire normal life.......you all seem to be handling it very well.......glad to see tour posting on the Rhabdo site.......God has blessed Ty and for some very good reasons....
Our daughter Alison was used by the Lord while not recovering from her rhabdo and went to be with her Lord on 10/20 02......I'm not fully sure why I am writing as you are one of the few sites I have visited, but maybe God led me here tonight.......Again our best to the Schmidts and especially Ty.......If you would like to visit Alison's website go to www.novestachurch.org and click on her picture...like the story on your site it is remarkable how many 100's she influenced over this past year and I'm sure Ty has been a incredible inspiration to many others also.....God bless all you Schmidts...the Emmerts in Cass City, MI

Hello Ty Michael & Co.
I hope Santa made it safely to Hobe Sound and your Christmas was a memorable one! We finally got home from
the hospital around 6:00 pm Christmas Eve. Of course this did not leave any time to finish shopping for some we
had not bought anything for yet. I still needed to run to get all the new meds at Walgreens and Florida IV was making
a much needed delivery also. We were just happy to be together! We couldn’t make service tonight, going on Sunday
instead. Hope you guys had a chance to make it. Is everyone over with the flu? Keep us posted & let us know how Christmas went.

Peace, Joy & Love being sent your way. Have A Safe & Happy New Year!

Hello Ty-Michael, Alex, Audra and Tim,

Ahh, the sweet sounds of brothers fighting. Sounds like my household, never a dull moment. I could tell from the very moment we met you have a special gift. That there was a goodness and kindness about you, and your entire family. Glad to hear your ridding yourself (heart) of a lot of emotions. I dropped a lot of baggage at the front door too one day! Yes there is to much commercialism at Christmas. But it also happens the whole year through! We just don’t see it as clearly. I would suggest getting to Church at least 30 minutes early. Service starts at 5:00, we will be seated by 4:30. I expect to see a large crowd. I’ll email you my number again or send me yours. We can discuss our strategy. I have to pick up Dolores & Ryon tonight at midnight from WPB airport. Ryon had his check-up visit at Duke today. In closing I’m leaving a few verses from Philippians 3:7-14 that have been inspirational to me. Hope this helps in your walk back into FAITH with the Lord. Faith is a key part of it all!

Peace, Love and Joy to you & your family....

I once thought all these things were so very important, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I may have Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own goodness or my ability to obey God's law, but I trust Christ to save me. For God's way of making us right with himself depends on faith. As a result, I can really know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I can learn what it means to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that, somehow, I can experience the resurrection from the dead!

Pressing toward the Goal

I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection! But I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and wants me to be. No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.

We were very happy to see you all at the Christmas party tonight. I thought I’d stop by and
drop this picture off for you and everyone else to see. It’s difficult for me to tell who’s who. But since
you’re the mother and father it shouldn’t be a problem.

Stop by and see some more pictures at Ryonspage

Giving Thanks

In these fragile times when we are reminded of the value of laughter, the danger of hatred and what it means to be a hero, we cry a little harder, but we kiss a little longer and we learn to count our miracles every day as they run off to school, call us from the office and when they come home again.

We are thankful for the favors of neighbors and the community to which they lend, and how it reminds us that we are all a part of something bigger than our homes.

These uncertain times help us to appreciate how much we have struggled to make it to today, and how thankful we are to live in a land which provides, protects and allows us to prosper if we so choose. And these are the days when we cast aside rhetoric for action, nationalism for globalism and hatred for human kindness.

Dear Audra, Tymichael and family,
It was a pleasure to meet you yesterday. I wish it could have been under better circumstances. Thanks for sharing Ty's story with me. I read you site today and that filled me in quite a bit. He's been through sooooo much! He looks great in his pic on the photo page! I was in awe of The Charlton's strength the past two days and of course, throughout this whole ordeal. God truly carried them through this. Well I will add Ty to my prayers...that he will remain in remission for ever and ever. Have a great and Happy Thanksgiving. Dolores & Joe Rommel and family.

Dear T-M,
We pray for all the kids and parents fighting cancer and ask God to cure them and give them peace and strenth. i know he is giving that to you through faith. You are a warrior! Everything the doctors learn about how your body is fighting cancer will help some other child. One day there will be a cure for this ( maybe tomorrow ? ) and it will have come about because of a brave boy named Ty-michael.
On my knees, Blake Wagner ( Noelle`s dad )
PS I believe Nellie is in heaven helping other kids be strong to battle this, she makes me proud.
