Hi. Just read the last update and wanted to sign in. I remember when I would look at so many caringbridge pages regularly. I am glad we are able to post and read less and less now. At one time it seemed like I would never want to stop. Hope Doug and all of you are doing well. The holidays will be here before we know it. Time marches on. Take care.

Hi Debbi! My name is Heidi, I am Matthew Blake's Aunt,Doug Armstrong's cousin. First let me thank you so much for contacting us and second I am so excited that your son has done so well!!!I would love to be able to share information with you and keep in touch! This is very overwhelming and a little surreal for all of us right now,but we know God has a perfect plan and are trusting Him to take care of Matthew. I am having trouble getting onto your son Doug's site or maybe the classic site is not set up the same to browse around in?
My email is hfiore1530@yahoo.com if you could help me with that. Thank you again for getting in touch with us it is encouraging to know that there is hope, a survivor that has been where we are now!! I look forward to hearing from you and may God send you and your family many extra blessings for the kindness you have already shared with our family!!

Dear Debbi and Nick,
Wish we could just 'be there' to put our arms around you.
So glad that the Lord isn't limited by miles and that HIS ARMS are securely wrapped around you. What comfort! We are praying for Doug (for all of you). This is our special prayer for Doug ...
Doug, praying today that Almighty God, your Creator and Healer, will give you victory, strength, rest, and peace and the satisfying joy of being in His care.
We love you!

Just another message to say "hang in there"... and more importantly, that God is still on His throne, in charge! I really like that picture of God, in His goodness, taking care of all the details, seeing it all, and not missing anything while I wait for His direction. I'm praying for y'all as you're in this period of waiting again -- and growing.

Well, you're getting to the bottom of it but that doesn't really make it any easier. I can totally understand how you must be feeling and how Doug is frustrated. It's a fine line to balance on right now. I'll be praying for clarity for all of you as you help Doug recover from this latest setback. I feel so bad for the poor guy. ((((HUGS))))

Dougyman, want you to know that we are prayin for ya and believing the Lord to be your perfect Peace! Just listened to a talk by Louie Giglio about John 16:33 (Message)"I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]" Hope this speaks to your heart my man...drink deeply from the well of His word!! Love you man, Brooke

Hi Debbi: Thanks so much for the update. I will be praying for you and your family. Shirley Baldwin is here in NY right now. Pat Macy just arrived today to visit her sister. The three of us will be having brunch tomorrow. Shirley leaves in the afternoon and then I go to Indiana on Saturday for 10 days. I hope to see Aunt Nina while I am there. I am still tired from the Shingles but that is nothing in comparison to what you are going through. God bless you. We know that God is not going to give us more than we can handle. Love, Anita

Hey Debbi!

Thanks for sharing this! Our sons got to be good friends this summer (Cale and Robby), and I asked Cale whether he had heard about Doug's situation. He hadn't at that point, but after I mentioned it I think he did ask Robby about it. You see, as you may know, Cale was on the continent of pediatric cancer, the country of lymphoma and the city of Hodgkin's. Everything you wrote about we can relate to....except Doug's brain cancer part was even more serious. Thanks for sharing these words. Those of us who have gone through this need to hear from others....and this was a great encouragement!

Glad to hear Doug is doing so well!

Debbi,
My son was diagnosed with medullo 5 years ago as well. It looks like we started a little over a month after you guys (6/26/04) and finished treatment about a month later than you (7/06/05).
I just read your most recent update and absolutely love your analogy of the "cancer planet" - with a pediatric continent, brain tumor country and medullo state or city. The medullo could probably be a state with the cities being metastatic or anaplastic, etc.
Your update just hit so close to home that I just had to sign your guestbook. Not sure when or if I have signed before, but have definitely kept track of Doug over the years.
My son, Jimmy, was only 5 1/2 at diagnosis and is now 10 1/2. We definitely have late effects that we are dealing with, but in general life is good!
I love the picture of Doug with his brothers;-) And thanks again for the perfect analogy.

Thanks for sharing these words, Deb. They resonate in my heart and remind me of why it's so important to connect with other families during our clinic visits and local events. There is a shared sorrow and increased joy in the journey, this journey that none of us chose...but that IT chose us.
Thanks for calling yesterday. It was just what I needed...

Hi Debbi,
I just read your entry. Very, very, VERY good description of pediatric cancer and what Doug, Kevin and all of us family members went through. I will be reading this again. Hope things are good for Doug. Kevin is so glad school is almost over, 1 more week for 8th grade and middle school! We are almost to summer here in MN. Still mostly cool, but we've had some glimpses of the real deal. Take care.

Hy Doug! My name is Tamara. I hope that you are ok now. I never had cancer but I was in coma in 2003. for one, one and a half month. I had a car accident ( well I was on motocycle) and I broke with my skull windshield. I am ok now, finishing faculty for a pre-school teacher. In the time of car accident I was 16.
I`m a Catholic (ok my family is) but then I started to search for sommeting, because God was so far away. I found Christ and I`m happy! Full of peace, love, calm and I want to talk to other people about Christ about His love.

i really hope that you are now happy, stay in Christ because He is our LORD!

I wrote to you on Facebook, but thought I should leave a message here. Five years is a big deal--congratulations! But it certainly brings back a lot of bad memories as well. As someone from the same "continent" but different "country" we understand as much as we can understand. Please know that we love and care about you. Thanks for the insightful and deeply heartfelt post.

Hey Doug,

I know Mrs. Lee just posted, but I have to add my bit too: Cool photos!!! I especially love the composition of the Dustin skateboard photo.

Maybe you should set up a Snapfish or Ofoto or SmugMug site (there's a million different photo sites) so we can see more of your pictures.

Hi Debbi!
Thanks for signing into Will's page. We're heading down to FL soon for his MAW trip. I'm excited just to have 6 consecutive family days, let alone all the splendor of Disney...
It was good to read your update and hear how your life is going. Wow. 10,000 a pop for an MRI. That's amazing. I don't really know how we're staying above water in this area...lots of debt and charging things. We're just climbing out of being in survival mode to trying to evaluate family life, finances, etc...it's not a pretty picture.
Somehow it will work out though, it always does.

I still check the blog occasionally to see how you all are doing, and I love reading your updates. If you remember, I had a roommate that went through cancer, Kristin Woodard (I think Nick was the one who told her about the caringbridge site). Hey there, thought I would check this out since it has been on my Favorites list for quite awhile. Glad to hear that aside from a few hopefully soon to pass and minor helath issues everything seems okay.

Hope Doug's tests all come out with flying colors and I predict Nick's blood pressure calms down after the NFL Draft.

Who would have thunk the Pack would play in the NFC Championship game? Guess we need to be satisfied with that, for now anyway!!

So checking this is easier at 11pm nursing a baby than picking up the phone to call. I'm sorry, but it's the best I can do right now. We LOVED the Christmas picture of you guys! Glad you have the FL sunshine. I, too, thank God for the sunshine many a day. Miss you and pray for you often. Erik emailed Nick for his AWANA homework and was fascinated with the responses Nick sent. So cool to see his eyes light up when he told me the story of Nick sharing the Gospel with Tim Ryan. Of course Doug then told Erik that Nick and Tim shared the Gospel with him...I think it was more than Erik could comprehend LOL.

Hi Debbi,
I read the book. I really liked it. I'm trying to get Kate to read it but she thinks she's too old and it looks boring...can't convince her once she's made up her mind, she's very strong willed. Anyway, I too had a good cry reading it. Thanks for telling me about it.

Debbi,
It was great to see your entries in our guestbook. I'm so happy for Doug's good health, happiness, and independence. 2 years! It's kind of amazing how far away it all seems even though it isn't. We are just over a year so I imagine 2 years seems far, far away at times. Kevin's summer will be pretty low key. He tried to keep up with so many things last year but things got kind of hard and he has slowed way down ever since. We do plan to go up to our trailer at the resort as much as possible and Kevin hopes to catch tons of fish. We are just very glad school is about to be done. So ready. I'm working summer school for the first time though so my vacation won't be as free. But the summer school schedule will be pretty easy so it will be a break anyway. Kate plans to go to the Sonshine festival this summer and Switchfoot will be there this year. I'm tempted to go too, just might.

Congrats to Rich on his graduation. We'll be doing that next year with Kate...can't believe it. Busy times ahead.

Keep in touch.
Deb

Deb, Doug and I were just looking at the pictures and when we saw the pic of Rich, I exclaimed, "It's Mr. Ree!" Doug said he looks just like he did when he was 5...Don't tell him we said that LOL. Much has gone on w/you guys over the past few years...and a BIG thing today w/Rich's graduation. Wish we could have been there for that milestone. And the OT milestone...well there's always the boys weddings we can look forward to attending...some day far, far away ;-)

Oh my. You can't imagine...no I guess you can, the idea of being a cancer survivor and being off treatment, attending events and doing SURVIVOR laps, volunteering at MAW events...these are the things my dreams are made of lately. I fantasize of having this all behind us. Thanks for updating, posting about what life looks like so far off treatment and providing us with some HOPE. I know it's not easy, but gosh, it's got to be better than the intensive treatment we're currently in.
Much love and many hugs,
Angie

Hello-
Just saw your update this morning. 3 year survivor! Hope and pray the exams go well, then Doug can rest, rest, rest. I'm glad Doug found such a good friend in Hannah, that has to help so much. Congrats for the graduate...busy, exciting times at your house. Hard to believe we'll have a graduate next year here. We have a month of school left here but it will go fast. Kevin is so ready. Good to read your news. Debbi, email some time okay.

Happy belated birthday, you guys! Glad to hear you had fun...is it actually possible for a group of boys to have TOO many chicken wings?! I don't think so.
Your family is such an encouraging influence in the lives of so many people. Look, even the newspaper recognizes that! To our favorite teen survivor/warrior and his 3 terrific super sibs...mom & dad...WE'RE HUGE FANS of y'all!

Enjoyed the article, a reminder to keep praying for you and your entire family, and another reason to celebrate all that God has done in the midst of suffering. Tyler had a pool party Easter weekend to celebrate his birthday. He's been playing saxaphone in our church praise & worship band and got selected for All-State Jazz Band. We just got several inches of snow which is making Matt frustrated since it is spring golf season for college. Hard to find a white little ball in white snow! Excited for Richie's graduation and next adventure. Hugs to all from the Prideys.

I had written something witty early this morning...I guess I clicked the wrong place, b/c I don't see it entered. How could I forget that today was the twins birthday...it was my atm pin number for YEARS!!! So was Richey's for that matter ;-) What an amazing thing to know that 17 years ago we were up all night, many nights praying for those preemie twins...and again up all night, many nights praying for Dougie a few years ago... I've been reminded so many times that God has no doubt had His hand on those boys. All the sicknesses, flying leaps off the stairs, oreos in the toaster, crawling after cheerios thrown on the floor for a few moments peace (do you remember that one?!), all the 'twin-isms that are STILL a part of my and Doug's vocabularies. Boys, we pray that the two of you will continue to remember that God has His hand on your lives. That HE has great and mighty plans for you, that you don't even know. That He longs to be your first priority. That He'd shout from the rooftops how much He loves you, if you'd let Him. We pray for you. We look forward to watching you develop into young men over the next 17 years. And I don't even want to THINK how old that makes me!
Love,
Dej

HAPPY 17TH BIRTHDAY DOUG AND DUSTIN!

In many ways it seems like yesterday your parents found out that they were having twins...then you came...early. I remember being up in the middle of the night praying for your little body...and doing it again a couple of years ago. My, how the Lord has had HIS hand on your life! I pray you don't forget His care for you these 17 years and that you continue to walk in His ways.

And Dustin, the Lord has plans for you, too. He must, after all of your antics growing up...the oreos in the toaster come to mind ;-) I pray that you will know His will for you and that you would follow that plan.

We're so glad we've known you these past 17 years...just think what we get to see over the next 17 years...oh my, how old I'll be!
Love,
Dej

Hi Debbi,
I spoke with you on the phone about a year ago. I have a daughter who had Medulloblastoma at about the same time as Doug - she is also doing well, praise God! She was interested in emailing Doug, but I have lost yours or his email. If he is interested in hearing from another 16 year old who has been down the same road give us a shout - Hannah would love to talk to him. I'm waiting for the puppies to be born. I'm glad you are in remission! You have been thru a lot for a young man! I was diagnosed in March with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). No treatment for me at this time. I'm in the watch and wait period. I'll only require chemo if/when I get sick. In the meantime I just have to be careful and take care of myself! That was so thoughtful of you! Hope you had a nice 4th of July weekend. We had perfect weather and Kevin enjoyed the lake. Last summer there was no way he could go in the lake. Thankful for all the little things that we used to take for granted. I hope Doug is feeling great and enjoying this summer.

Was thinking about all of you DeColas and thought I would go to your website to see how things are going. I was glad to see that a year after Doug's treatment finished, he is in 100% remission. Count me along with so many as being a big fan of all of you.

Your friend,
Joe

Hi everyone! We just got back yesterday from our week away. It was a nice time for the 4 of us and we had good friends come and visit from Seattle. I realized many times last week how blessed we are that Kevin is doing so much better this summer than last. Looking back and remembering the hard times helps sweeten the present and brings hope in perspective again. I still worry over so many things all the time but I also try to see the good as much as possible. Your Father's day celebration sounds so beautiful and very touching. I know that meant more than all the material gifts a dad could ever receive. Priceless!! Sorry to hear Debbi had to have that test...hope you are feeling better now. Harper is so adorable. Happy days to all of you.

Hi Doug! my name is Vedran.
I read your story couple of days ago in the Worldwide Challenge and I couldn't not contact you.
I wanted to share my story with you:
When I was 17 Iwas diagnosed leuchemia limfoblastic bla bla
and I had to go to a hospital promptly. I did not know what was going on, I taught i'll get out in a couple of days. also, at that time, I did not know God or anything about Lord Jesus. I never believed Him, never heard clearly the joyfull news. I was the lord of my life and no one else. But after a periods of chemoteraphies I was afraid.
I am not the writer of my life, I could've been dead- I thought. My life and behaviour nevertheless became even worse. I cursed more, I acted and responded badly to people especially my close ones, family, friends.. ''Accidently'' I heard a joyfull news from a guy on academy and after a while in so-called 'Sunday Night cafe' that some christians organised their testimonies and they gave me a New testament that I started to read.
And those words of love mercy and forgiveness made me turn to Jesus and speak. I gave my life to Jesus thet night with tears and with laughs at the same time, crying out of sorrow cause I've left Him and smiling back cause He brought me back.
Now I'm 4. Actually I'm 25 but it's been 4 years since I was born :)
There were ups and downs in these 4 years, but I'm so happy cause those ups and downs made me grow more in my relationship with Christ.
I'm happy that I am alive and I think that my sickness was something that made me start thinking about life and afterlife.. And I know Jesus was with me all the way although I was not with Him but it was a path I had to take that lead me to Him.
I wanted to share this with you cause I felt a connection and joy reading your story cause we are colleges, brothers in Christ and His 'pirates'!
Stay in your relationship with Jesus, be persevearant and strong, humble and loveing.
You have a wonderfull dog. I'm sorry i don't know his name. My dog looks just like yours. His name is Kaizer, and I found him on the beach 6 years ago. I'll try to send you a photo of him..

We are very happy for Doug. God bless him. We are also very happy for Robby and his baseball accomplishments. By the way, the pictures are very nice, too.

Nick,
thanks for helping and coaching Martin and the Champion REDS!
