Hi Jeremy and Missy,

I hope you were successful in transitioning your home care program to the adult side. The transitions involved as you becoem a young adult are quite a challenge (even in terms of identifying adult physicians that are knowledgeable). Trust you're enjoying the beauty of the snow covered mountains. My girls hope to visit the Boulder area this fall. Have a great day.

We huddle by the fire on this bitter cold night,
Enjoying hot cocoa by the warm fire light.

While the smells of a feast fill this rickety old shack,
Icy winds whistle as they dance through the cracks.
Surrounded with blankets, sweet carols we sing,
Happily awaiting what this Christmas will bring.

You won't find any presents 'neath our skimpy tree.
Ornaments are hand-made and so is our wreath.
Under limp mistletoe, mom gives dad a kiss,

Atmosphere of joy and love

Merry Christmas to all of you.
Everyone here at our house is thinking of you.
Remember Christ loves you, no matter your worth.
Revel in the illuminating joy of His birth.
Your love is the only gift He'll ever ask.

Celebrate His life and in His light you'll bask.
Holiday giving and the spread of good cheer,
Really is something we could keep up all year.
Imagine a world where it was Christmas each day,
Sounds hard to do, but it could be that way.
This is our Christmas wish for all of you tonight--
May His warmth surround you like a blanket of light.
All your wishes be granted with His blessings of love,
Sent special delivery from the Angels above.

I am glad the respiratory equipment went smoothly-I hope the infusion switch goes just as smoothly. A question on the vent alarms-is it high pressure? I have a lot of resistance because of tight contractures so we have to set my high alarm much higher than RTs like. There is quite a bit of troubleshooting in the beginning but once you find what works for you it smooths out. A thought on the oxygen-I don't have hypertension but I have always been cautioned not to use oxygen by itself because of my weak diaphragm-oxygen depresses the desire to breathe deeply and when someone has weak breathing muscles oxygen can have a negating affect. I hope each day gets better!

I am glad to see an update. I kept checking and checking. Getting the right amount of humidity is important with a trach. It bipasses the warmth & moisture of your nose. I have heard that in dry, cold places like Colorado it is especially difficult. I avoid saline like the plague, though. Do you have HMEs/artificial noses? Those help trap the moisture. Also be sure to get a humidifier with the vent otherwise it can hurt and be irritating. It appears from the picture that Jeremy has a Shiley. Secretions tend to stick to those more making it harder to breathe...I use the skin balm every day around my gj tube. I also pack the hole with Aquacell and use a cut pad instead of gauze. That's my magical formula for healthy skin...I hope the new company is better and you can get settled into the trach routine.

Hi Jeremy and Missy... I just wanted to stop in and let you know that I'm praying for you all and hoping that the road ahead begins to smooth out. Sounds like you are having some pretty normal reaction to the trach and vent. Just like other stoma's it will hurt and ooze until it is well healed. Don't hesitate to ask for some pain meds and even some relaxants to get through the initial suctionings and changes. Soon enough it will become second nature just like all the other crazy medical stuff you have to put up with. In the meantime know I've got a number of prayer lists praying for you as well.

Love and Hugs,
Kristie

I hope the surgery went well. Suctioning often and blood is normal for the first 24-48 hours. The site will feel significantly better after the first change when they take out the stitches but the change itself hurts. I used IV pain meds for the first three changes. I hope the recovery goes smoothly with no complications. Feel free to ask any questions about recovery/complications. Wishing you the best!

PLEASE STAY STRONG AND KNOW THAT GOD IS A AWSOME GOD! HE SURE HAS REASONS WE DON'T ALWAYS UNDERSTAND! HE HAS PLANS FOR THIS BRAVE YOUNG MAN. OURS IS BUT TO WONDER AND HOLD TIGHT TO YOUR LOVE.
If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but have not love,
I have become sounding brass or a tinkling symbol.

And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and
all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing.

And if I dole out all my goods, and
if I deliver my body that I may boast
but have not love, nothing I am profited.

Love is long suffering,
love is kind,
it is not jealous,
love does not boast,
it is not inflated.

It is not discourteous,
it is not selfish,
it is not irritable,
it does not enumerate the evil.

It does not rejoice over the wrong,
but rejoices in the truth

It covers all things, it has faith for all things,
it hopes in all things, it endures in all things.

Love never falls in ruins;
but whether prophecies, they will be abolished; or
tongues, they will cease; or
knowledge, it will be superseded.

For we know in part and we prophecy in part.

But when the perfect comes, the imperfect will be superseded.

When I was an infant,
I spoke as an infant, I reckoned as an infant;
when I became [an adult],
I abolished the things of the infant.

For now we see through a mirror in an enigma, but then face to face.
Now I know in part, but then I shall know
as also I was fully known.

But now remains faith, hope, love, these three;
but the greatest of these is love.

1 corinthians 13:1-13

I HAVE A TRACH-you can e-mail me any questions. But I think it is very important for you to know of a much easier, better alternative that I used for my sleeping at night until I got weak enough to need a vent in the day. You can wear a ventilator with a mask. I did it for 6 years, my sister has been doing it for 10. Some people that are completely vent dependant use the mask...It is a ventilator. Mine on the mask was an LP10. Dr. Bach is the pioneer of this. A trach has a lot of complications like everyone reports a weaker voice and being colonized with a bacteria is common. I have colonized pseudomonis. Suctioning is very good for getting up junk...Anyway, I would be glad to answer any questions via e-mail. I am 22-used a bi-pap at night from 9-11, ventilator through mask at night from 11-17, trached and began using ventilator during waking hours as needed. I have a severe progressive muscle disease. tracheostomy.com is a great resource and support that I visit regularly. Sounds like you have been through the ringer!

Thanks for the update, I was so worried about Jeremy. I'm sorry to hear about the sleep issues. Hopefully with the trach jeremy will be able to get more sleep & restful sleep. My Jen had a trach back in 1992 after her liver transplant but she was decannulated before we came home. So our trach care learning was very limited since the nurses did most of it, or rather respiratory dept. My prayers are with Jeremy & you too.
