It was so nice to read your journal entry and hear how well Degan is doing. I could just hear him giggling as I read your account. I totally agree with you about taking for granted the little things. I too am sooo looking forward to those with our next child. Degan is such an inspiration to us and we too can't wait to hear a giggle or see a simple smile. HELLO...YOU ARE BOTH ONE OF A KIND SPECIAL!!! Just a quick hi. I didn't talk to Jay today, so guess no news is good news. Hope as Deagan feels better each day,he gets stronger. Bonnie,just to clarify...Lori and Degan flew back to N.C./DUKE for his 9 month tests. The initial plan was to be out there for a week and jet set home. However Degan had infection in his central lines and also his g-tude...one I know was staff, which they are treating with I.V. antibiotics. They removed his central lines, replacing it with a temp. until all of the infection is gone and then they will replace the temp with a medi-port. They will possibly do the surgery in a week or so and then probsbly wait another week before coming back to Colo. I hope to talk to Lori and Degan tomarrow. If by chance you happen to drop by the site, remember how special you both are and how happy we will all be to have you home. One good thing is you are both missing the SPRING ALLERGY blitz that is so bad right now. Well, take care. I love and miss you both so very much. Good night grammy

Dearest Degan and Lori: Well I,m not sure it's Grammys place to update the world. But there you both sit back at Duke U and R.M. House. What was to be only a week, looks like will turn into a month easy. Honey, I am so sorry that you ate out there without any of your CO family, but thank God yor,re where you are at For Degans sake. I am so thankful the surgery to remove his central line was a success and that the line and g-tube infections were caught at this early stage. Just know that't there are thousands of POWER PRAYER'S being said every moment for both of you. Hopefully the next 3-4 weeks will not be so filled with stress as the initial testing week there was for you. Know that you are both in my heart and in my prayers. We had frustrating times when we got home too - they didn't think flushing Jeremy's lines everyday was necessary, didn't think we needed to change caps every week, etc. AND... when Jeremy had to be hospitalized in the Twin Cities for a virus, the nurse was going to change his dressing without using masks are gloves!!! I said No Way! I stepped in and did it myself - the way we learned at Duke. He didn't have one single line infection the whole way through!
Anyway - glad to hear he's doing so great!!

Hey guys! I hope all goes well with the eating! Sounds like Degan is making progress since his surgery! Yea!!! We miss you guys and can't wait for you to come home. Wow, has he changed. So have I. My spinal fusion has helped me to sit up better, I grew a couple of inches at least. I'm home now & doing much better than previous surgeries. I got to dress up at TCH for Halloween, I was a fairy princess. We pray for you every day & hope to see you soon. hi everyone, haven't written for awhile, but you are all in our thoughts daily. people at pizza hut are always asking how things are going with degan and to tell you you are all prayed for daily.. aunt betty keeps us updated mostly every week at our regular sat night supper at village inn. i'll miss this week since i have to work. scott might go. we are getting ready for halloween i'm cooking pumpkin seeds right now. the oven was still on from cookies for jenessa halloween party. i decided we better get the pumpkin carved soon halloween will be over. we'll do it tomorrow eve. not much else going on.. is degan going to dress up for halloween and go trick or treating? please send pictures. did you get jami's senior picture proofs. they are on your e-mail. thanks so much for the updates( we do need another one soon.) i will try to call soon. love,prayers and kisses to all. love donnie

I had originally planned to visit as many caringbridge sites as possible, and leave some encouraging words, prior to my daughters passing. Unfortunately her passing came sooner than we had expected, but longer than any of her doctors expected.

Another angel takes flight.

My daughter Pam had a brain tumor and was fighting the fight since November 4th, 2002, after the birth of her daughter (Casey Morgan). My youngest daughter, Karen, set up a caringbridge website for Pam. Karen's friends mother shared a prayer with us, that I would like to share with you and Degan. It's called DON'T QUIT:
Don't Quit -
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit - Rest if you must, but do not quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor's cup. And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.(Just call on Jesus).

I would also like to share a saying that was on the card my wife Diane picked out, and we bought for Pam:

That wasn’t expected back

And everyone went inside
When you got sad

WOW!!! I have been away for several weeks from your journal entry. I hear from Kelly and how things are going down there. It was so heartwarming to read your update on 10/14 and I can tell you that what you say is so true. Now that our sweet Gina, who transplanted in January 2000, is going on four years old, our lives are filled with preschool, fun outings, potty training and just being able to share in so many experiences with her. Our five month stay at Duke is merely a blink in time now that she is achieving so many wonderful milestones.......thanks to the work of Dr. K. She is one amazing doc and I am so glad that you have the ultimate respect for her! There is no one like her in the world!!! She always surpasses my expectations as a doctor and caregiver. She treats these children as if they were her own. How wonderful life is with Degan. It is almost unbelievable that he was born with Krabbe after knowing what course his life would be taking. Please continue to share you wonderful experience with all of us. I missed my 'Ole Kentucky home so much, but once I returned I realized how lucky I was to have had the opportunity to save my daughter's life.

Hello, my name is Joyce Keel. I recently learned of Degan and Megan through co-workers at Sprint. My grandson Christian Johnston passed away 10/19/03. He was born with a birth defect which utimately lead to transplants. Most of his 8 years was spent in hospitals which included UNC at Chapel Hill and Jackson Memorial in Miami. I can relate a lot to what your family is going through. Christian never ate very much and on TPN most of his life. Our hospital family are great life long friends. Faith in God and his blessings have continued to carry my daughter and I through. Keep faith and hope.

Look how handsome he is!!!!! He looks great. His picture reminded me of one I have of Gina when she was on the steroids. Her cheeks were so big and cute......Lori and Jey you guys are hanging in there great! Doing wonderful.....again you have so much to look forward to.. Even though you will never forget the transplant world, some day you will leave it and after a year or so life will normalize. You will be home, playing with your little man and you will smile so much!! Gina is the light of my life...I couldn't imagine it without her. She brings so much joy to our family. We waited a long, long time for her!

Hey Lori and Jey and Degan,

It is great to hear the news about the donor cells! It is truly wonderful news. You've made it through the first major transplant hurdle--the actual transplant and being outpatient. You have so much to look forward to and the further and further you get out of transplant the easier you will breathe!! The first year is the longest and then it gets easier and easier. Each med that Degan comes off of, each time he eats more, every ounce he gains, each little milestone he achieves will be celebrated. Gina just had her port removed this past week and that for us was the last of the transplant issues. HURRAY!!! Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.....hope daddy comes back soon.

We have been eagerly awaiting to learn when you all will be admitted, and we hope it will be soon. However, I understand the importance of making sure that all of the organ systems are in the best working order before starting chemotherapy, because that stuff is very rough on the body. I am sure the anxiety is building and it is hard to wait any longer, and we are praying that Degan can start his chemo this week. If he can't though, then maybe that is the best thing for his little liver, despite how very difficult it will be to have to wait another week. hi guys, really liked the new pictures. i wanted to to see the central line in. me and jenessa think it looked like he had been crying. he was probably wondering what in the heck was going on. we put the new pictures up on the donation jar at pizza hut. thought you might appreciate that more than the picture of you in your hospital robe. but you looked great in both pictures. we've been showing everyone the pictures. aunt betty and uncle claude thought they were so cute. we are having the fundraiser for degan on july 1st at pizza hut so anyone that comes and eats there that day, 20% of your ticket will be donated to lori and jey. no coupons though. i've been telling lots of people about krabbe disease and the transplant(even though i don't fully know how all it works) people have really been asking questions. the other girls at pizza hut tell them it's my nephew so then they talk to me. well enough of that. better go to bed . i am going to call you one of these days. just not sure when is best time to call. love ya lots, hugs and kisses. donnie and family

Hello, I am one of MANY, probably THOUSANDS of people you don't know or ever will know personally. But, I found your site by another caring bridge family member. I am Reesie Cup's mom... Reese passed away from complications with pneumonia after a successful transplant at Duke. He had Hurler Syndrome. I don't know how you knew to test for Degan's condition in utero but I'm glad you did. He is absolutley adorable.... I can't believe he'll be getting the transplant so soon. But, with these special children, the sooner the better. You will love the nurses on 5200 and will meet many families and children you will no doubt come to love and consider part of your own family.
