It's me,
Chris...been meaning to update for months, so much to tell, yet so little relief.
Jessy's Memorial was,well, memorable to say the very least...Thanks to all my Awesome Family & Friends who helped make it happen!!!
I hope I did him proud and gave him the Party & Farewell he wanted and so well deserved...
Couldn't have asked for a better day & place...
Still haven't gotten around to Thank You cards...sorry all, everytime I try, I fall apart...feel utterly lost without him...but he is near me often and guides me...

This is LeeAnn's poem, a very brave Wilms mom...

What do we wish others understood about the loss of our child? Here is a partial list of such wishes:

I wish you would not be afraid to speak my child’s name. My child lived and was very important and I need to hear his name.

I wish you wouldn’t feel awkward if I mention his name.

If I cry or get emotional if we talk about my child, I wish you knew that it isn’t because you hurt me: the fact that my child died has caused
my tears. You have allowed me to cry and I thank you. Crying and emotional outbursts are healing.

I will have emotional highs and lows, ups and downs. I wish you wouldn’t think that if I have a good day my grief is all over, or if I
have a bad day I need psychiatric counseling.

I wish you knew that the death of a child is different from other losses and must be viewed separately. It is the ultimate tragedy and I
wish you wouldn’t compare it to the loss of a parent, spouse or pet.

Being a bereaved parent is not contagious, so I wish you wouldn’t shy away from me.

I wish you knew that all the “crazy” grief reactions that I am having are in fact very normal. Depression, anger, frustration,
hopelessness, the questioning of values and beliefs are to be expected following the death of a child.

I wish you wouldn’t expect my grief to be over in six months. The first few years are going to be exceedingly traumatic for us.

As with alcoholics, I will never be “cured” or a “former bereaved parent,” but will forever be a “recovering bereaved parent.”

I wish you understood the physical reaction to grief. I may gain or lose weight, sleep all the time or not at all, lose my short-term memory,
develop a host of illness and be accident prone, all of which may be related to my grief.

Our child’s birthday, the anniversary of his death, and the holidays are terrible times for us. I wish you could tell us that you are
thinking about our child these days and if we get quiet and withdrawn, just know that we are thinking about our child and missing him terribly.

Please understand the I am not the same person I was before my child died, and do not expect me to "get back to my old self". I am forever changed, but if you give me a chance, you may find that you like the "new me".

A handsome young man, I turned to this site several times during our battle with Wilms. Jessy was a strong boy and then young man. Will hold his family in prayers for some time. I am so sorry for the battle he fought so long. We have to keep working to give our kids the weapons to win every time.

I saw this news on the listserv, I am so sorry for your loss. I can't believe what a warrior he was, and for so long. He was truly amazing. My daughter has battled Wilms 3X already, and many times I wonder what the future holds for her. If you ever have time,please check out her site or contact me. Grace and Kate Olsen gave us a lot of Hope back in 2005 when Hollyn was first diagnosed. Words have no bearing on all you have gone through, but know we will pray for you all and hold Jessy close in our hearts.

Hello everyone...

I've been unable to update the page since they change the format & Jessy changed the password.

So I've decided to do it thru my own Guestbook.

It's been an incredible journey since I last posted.

It's with profound sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Jessy at the tender age of 20 yrs and 6 mths. He passed peacefully with his family by his side at Kingston General Hospital on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, after courageously battling cancer for 14 yrs.

I will try and post on the main page when I can figure out how to get back in!

Thank you all very much for all the help & support over the years.

Hi Jessy. I just want you to know that you are not alone in your fight with Wilms tumour. My son Daniel is 17 and was 1/2 way thru' his final year at high school when he was diagnosed. His cancer is already in both kidneys, lungs, and liver. He wasn't even sick until a few days before diagnosis!! Blood & urine tests were normal. The shock hasn't really sunk in for us. He's had 3 days straight of a 4 drug chemo cocktail - very frail with mouth & throat causing him the most distress. Cancer doesn't pick or choose. You have a battle on your hands - so our prayers are with you & those who care about you. Stay strong & fight Jessy.

Transition to PMH...ahhhhhhh remember it well, its tough leaving Sick Kids and entering into the adult hospital, but TRUST me Jess........the nurses are gonnna eat you up :)

I know what you guys are going through. I have a three year old cousin who has wilms. I worry about him 24/7. I only get to see him thanksgiving and christmas. But he is doing ok. I will send my hopes and prayers toward Jessy and his family. Like I do for my cousin.

Dear Chris, Just stopping by to see how things have been with you all. No news is good news...must be quiet. Which isn't all bad. We had our Relay for Life in August...I made a luminary bag with Jessys' photo on it. (I swiped it from the website) I also had a banner with all the children from our listserv. Jessy was also on the banner. People were stoppping and reading all the childrens names...it drew quite a crowd at times.

I can't imagine what Jessy has endured. He is an amazing young man. His struggle though is his families struggle too. Prayers are with all of you.

Anyhow, It had been a long time since I posted and wished you all good news. Would love to read an update....

I must admit, your story hits too close to home and straight to my heart. (I stumbled on your sight from Ms.Laurelrose)

My son, Christian, is 5 years old and still going through treatment for Wilms Tumor...also stage 3.

Most recent Wilms Warriors I have encountered are Stage 1 or 2. I have felt so alone...like they had no idea how much scarier it is for us with Christian. And I know that is silly...cancer is cancer....still...they didn't find it in THEIR child's lymph nodes!

Anyway, just seeing your handsome face, Jessie, and how full of life your spirit is has really helped me. I just wanted you to know that.

I know it has been a hard battle for you and your family. Keep fighting...

(and may I add, why is that Wilms seems to attack the most BEAUTIFUL of children?? Jessie you are too adorable)

I will add you to our daily prayer list and check in on your progress. June is just around the corner...in fact, Christian end his chemo on June 15th and will be having scans probably around the same time as you. WOuldn't it be awesome if we could all celebrate DOUBLE good news??!!

I've got a new plan for you.. You desperately need to find a position at Revenue Canada. Did you know that a federal employee at Revenue Canada gets 5 years...5 bloody years of protected job rights in the case of a critical illness within their family. Did you also know that even if it is a step child, you are entitled to 5 years of job protection....The other parent, the real parent who is not an employee of Revenue Canada gets 8 weeks...*if* the doctors feels the need..... Hey you! I don't have any words of wisdom because I didn't have to deal with a teenager with opinions. A two year old can't make these kinds of decisions so in that respect, I had it easier than you. All you can do is what you have been doing - support him and love him and try not to kill him in the process! LOL! Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it? Hey Chris and Jesse, Just stopping in to see how things went last night. I'm thrilled to hear you have one tube removed! Thats just amazing! I hope you get out of constant care soon! I SOOO understand the desire to get a proper night sleep..Chris, I don't know if you know there is a parent shower on the second floor. If you take the hallway towards xray from the CCU doors, there are vending machines on the right hand side, the first door on the right if you go in there, there are family rooms in that hallways, the last door on the right is the parent shower. Open 24 hours a day...:0) Its the best kept secret of HSC. Hope you have a better day today!! Hugs to you both!

Hey Everyone, I just got home from the hospital. I thought I would let you all know that Jesse has been moved up to 5A in the constant care room and I believe they got the epidural issue under control.Chris was saying he was starting to cough and sit up.He's just absolutely incredible! He must get that strength from his mom!! It looks like Chris is holding it together but I think only the most fearful part is overwith, She still needs some loving from her fansout here. The hardest parts are yet to come! Keep this family in your thoughts, they are just some of the nicest folks I have ever ran into at the hosptial! Keep showing them nurses what you're all about Jesse! Big Hugs to you all!

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the great update of a successful surgery! J-man is a fighter, quite spunky too, that's what will help him with his recovery. It's sure comforting to know they got all the tumors and that his blood pressure problems are better and that he may be able to move out of ICU soon! J-man I'm glad you got your wish to be off the respirator, now to work with the mask or whatever you need to get some good oxygen flowing in those blood vessels of yours. Sure hope they get the epi squared away so you are more comfortable with your incisions and chest tubes. You know you've got people all over this world prayin over you and your family--Praying you get your special Christmas!

So J-Man, does the "no visitors" rule apply to those who hold you near and dear to their hearts? I would be happy to come and visit, but only if you want me to! Just think about how much fun it will be with me harassing you and you not being able to harass me back 'cause of that tube! I am sure that the nurses will be happy given your behaviour the last time!

Seriously, I know that you are going to get through this just fine - how can you not with all your support system "up there" sprinkling angel dust on you!

Hi, I found your page through another CB page and thought I would check it out. My daughter spent most of her short life at HSC, it is a wonderful hospital, we were very lucky to have been sent there. We are 45 minutes from the Windsor area.

Chris - I've visited Jessy's site many times over the last month and I have to say my heart aches for you. As if dealing with a sick child isn't enough you have all this other stuff to worry about. How a father can make a child choose between his parents is beyond me. You haven't said but I'm sure hoping you and Jessy are together as you both need each other right now. I'm also hoping that everything is okay because its been a week since your last entry. I'm friends with another family that lost their 16 year old daughter a few months ago and I know it's so important to have support around you. Have you ever been on Matthew's site www2.caringbridge.org/canada/matthew His story is amazing in that they decide no more treatments in July 2004 and he's still feeling great. He's been battling the beast for 10 years so don't ever give up hope for Jessy. I don't know you but I can tell you are an amazing mom. Livestrong Chris and please know I'm praying for you & Jessy.

Dear Chris, I just stopped in to see how you are. I am sorry things are not going well for you right now. I don't mean to sound to pushy but isn't Jessy only 16? In the states you could be in court with an emergency hearing because a parent chooses not to comply with drs treatment for a minor (when life threatening). Not that you need another court battle but I am surprised that he (Dad) can neglect some of these things. Prayers and strength sent your way.

Chris,

You and I go along way back and no one I know including myself has ever struggled with their child fighting cancer as long as you and Jess have...
4 years was terrible enough for all of us, the uncertainty, the trying to give your kid as normal a life as possible, but you! 10 years and a bit, only to have the father of the year decide he can handle this with his son.
I just hope dad learns real quick about being vigilant and has the gut instinct as a mother does, (no offence to the great dads out there) to know when something goes wrong...
Just remember Jess has a hell of alot going on in his head, and who knows, maybe he thinks things will be easier for you if he can make you mad as a hornet at him...
easier for both of you to let go, one way or another...I know Christopher pulled away and I think it was his way of coping and trying to make us think he could handle it all...

Dear Chris, Prayers from Michigan for you and your children. Teenagers!#@%*? I remember when...thank God I grew up and saw the light. For myself better late than never. I remember when I was in HS, a friend of mine in and out of remission with hodgkins had lots of issues. She sure gave her parents a run for there money. She to had a very "unhealthy" boyfriend and she tended to act on emotions herself. Boy did she like to "party". I always use to think of all the fear and pain she must be feeling inside. She pushed away the people who were always at her side. I do remember he parents not enabling her and giving consequences and so on....I do believe they finally had a peaceful relationship with one another. My friend later passed away in her mid twenties from her final relapse.

Do you have any support to to talk to besides this cb page? In all of your running around to care for Jessy remember to take care of yourself. I find strength in a simple prayer...
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courgage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
When I have a bunch of stuff coming at me at once...I break it down phrase by phrase...many times a day to get me through. Some how it always seems to help...even though my troubles are still there.

Kyle and I decorated a luminary bag in honor of you Jessy. Our big Relay for Life event is June 11. We call ourselves "Cruisin with Kyle". Its pretty cool. I am the entertainment chair for the 2nd year...we have the Star Wars Storm Troopers coming out to the event! It is soooo cool. I don't know if you Canadians are as crazy over Star Wars as us Americans are. But if you want to check out the group who is coming for fun go to www.501st.com

Hi Chris,I am so sorry that you are going through such a difficult time. I hope that the medication will help your Jessy if he is feeling down. I personally have taken an anti-depressent since January. It has helped me sooooo much. I think depression is greater when things are happening that you don't have any control over. Mine started after my father's death this past summer. By the holidays I was a mess. The past month I have renewed my faith in God when at Christmas I had so little faith in anything. Hi Chris, I guess you were right! Apparently I have not yet signed Jessy's guestbook, although I have visited the site many, many times!

I can't believe we, as parents, have to go through something like this with our children. It just shouldn't happen.

The only good thing to come out of our experiences, is to have met such wonderful people, with whom we have forged a lifelong friendship! I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through Mitchell's cancer trials and tribulations without your support!

Hi guys and gals, Just got back from biking down the east coast of the great US of A. Hadn't driven in a long while and forgot just how much time a guy can think while riding alone. On my way down I made one of those special deals with our Friend upstairs. The deal... I'd say a pray for you everytime I'd drive by a church. Going thru Virginia, North and South Carolina was a breeze, but God was waiting for me at the state line. How was I suppose to know that Georgia was the church capital of the US. Anyway, I did them all. I didn't miss a single pray.
