Hi Cathy & John - Thinking of you. This week, just outside our window (about 1 meter away), 7 cardinals were sitting in the lilac bushes....Of course, had to think of Hannah and her grandpa Stuart, and how they brightened our lives -whether singing, whistling, sharing stories. Sending you love & hugs from wintery Perth!

Dear Cathy and John,

I've just been catching up on all your news the last year, it's been wonderful to hear about all the new things going on in your lives :-) I was especially excited to hear you have moved out to the farm, I look forward to hearing how your crops go this spring and what you have been doing to the house. Also, where you ended up going for your winter holiday! Cathy, I am so happy to hear you are now over five years out from dx, that is great news! I checked out the retirement village where your parents are now living, John, it looks like a fabulous place (and happy belated 80th to your Dad!), I hope they are loving it there!! I had to laugh when I saw that you had been to Sedona, as this is where we ended up (mainly Phoenix but also a day in gorgeous Sedona!!) this summer for our holidays...I wish we had been there at the same time. Steve will be fortunate to return to Phoenix in April to do some golfing and staying at our friends condo, which is where we stayed with Quinn and Callum this past summer...we had such a great time there, looks like you did too! :-) I bought my Dad some fudge from a store there where you could look thru the window and see it being made...I was so sad that the Christmas store was closed that day :( We did have a delicious dinner at a magical restaurant overlooking the red hills, it was called "Top of Hillside Grill" and we enjoyed it very much!
The reason I come here tonight, of course, is to let you know that Hannah was on my mind, as tomorrow is her Angel Day, and I wanted you to know that I was thinking of you both. I was delighted to see a new photo of Hannah that I hadn't seen before, making her little snowman...Hannah always struck me as very industrious and very clever. Did you happen to take some of her crocuses that were at the Calmachie house and bring them along to the farm? It's funny, I can never see purple flowers and not think of Hannah, nor soybeans and not think of you both :-)) I wonder if I have ever eaten any soybeans that came from your very farm? Wouldn't that be neat? :-)
I would very much like to have your new email and address, so maybe you can drop me a line when you have a moment.
Thinking of you both and especially of our sweet girl Hannah, she touched my life and will always have a special place in my heart. I know you miss her every day. I hope you feel her love all around you.

Love Tracey, Steve, Quinn and Callum xoxo <traceyhewison@shaw.ca>

Good Morning Cathy & John:
Thinking of you this weekend, and esp. Sunday on Hannah's birthday. We heard one of her favourite hymns, while driving to church ("His eye is on the sparrow and I know He's watching me" ) and brought back so many memories.Hannah sure had a beautiful singing voice and I treasure the times we had singing together. Sunday on the way home from Woodstock, we saw clouds forming like an angel (similar to the Angel Card-"The Gift"). It was amazing! Thinking of you in the midst of packing....take care

Hi Cathy and John,
I am so sorry to have been unable to send you a message on Hannah's angel day....Callum had an unfortunate accident with my laptop and some water....it is back working, minus the keyboard, so I use a remote keyboard instead. I have been thinking of Hannah an awful lot the last few weeks, even more than usual. I also can't believe it's been five long years since she moved on to her heavenly home. It's hard to believe you can miss someone you never met, but you can. You were both in my thoughts.

Hi From Debbie and Mattie in Vancouver. It seems like such a long time since we met you and Hannah at the Ronald McDonald House in London ( (6 years ago). Matt celebrated his 10th anniversary of his liver transplant last on November 12th, 2009. We still talk about London often. Matt has fond memories of the London Knights hockey games ( He still follows the team on the internet)and of course of Hannah. Some people that Matt and I have met through his medical journey, stay close to our hearts. Hannah being one of them. I am so glad that Cathy is well and that you both still update the website. It is always wonderful to hear about both of you and your wonderful memories of Hannah. Hugs! and Happy New Year!

Hannah's treasures have become your treasures and we can well relate to what's involved in giving them away. Joshua received many teddies, and many have blessed others. But there are still quite a number here...the big stuffed dog was for the bigger days of outpatient visits. The other Sunday we had a couple families here. At one point the children all came into the room with teddies in their arms. Joshua would have grinned to see them enjoy their discovery of his teddies.

Hi Cathy and John!
Just stopping by to say hello :-) I hope your weather has improved, have you gotten the soybeans planted yet? Your bathroom reno looks gorgeous, I am sure it is nice to have all the amenities back once more! What type of red car did you buy this time? I know the other is a Toyota, was wondering if you stayed with a Ford or bought another import? ;-) My parents are big fans of Honda and Toyota, they really make such fabulous vehicles. Steve, however, is a Ford man, so we currently have a Ford Escape and a Ford F-150. I really like my little SUV, it's been a super vehicle and can even pull our trailer (hybrid). How was your long weekend? We had our first camping trip of the year, to a place called Nature's Hideaway, in DeWinton, not far at all from Calgary. It was great fun. There were 15 kids at our group site, 11 being boys, so you can imagine the fun that Quinn and Callum had. The Sheep River was running a strong current, but there was a small pool beside the river, so the boys all had a blast riding their bikes into the pool and wiping out :-) The weather was 29C to 32C everyday! But now it has been almost non stop raining for three days...but so green, it's just beautiful once again.
Well, I have stayed up much too late tonight, so off to bed. Take special care and good luck on the farm with planting. And especially, congrats to Cathy on being finished with treatment, hurray!

love Tracey xoxo <traceyhewison@shaw.ca>

Such a touching narration of memories of Hannah in your Mother's Day message. I'm sure there are more that will pop up in the future when you least expect it. I'm not sure we will catch up with you Victoria Day weekend with the two of you going to the Young Reunion. Any chance? We'll have to get you two up to Bruce Beach sometime before summer on a weekend when there is no need or chance for farm work to be done.

It's funny how the little things remind you of a loved one. The other day I was at the pet store with the children and Ryder wanted to see the birds, and proceeded to ask me what each one. Well it reminded me of Hannah informing me about all the birds she knew.....what a good memory!!

Hi guys,
Thanks for stopping into Emi's guestbook, John. I hope you guys have a Happy Easter, too. I will definitely pass your "hi" onto the nurses. We are really looking forward to spending the holiday with all the people up there. We miss everyone, it seems odd but when those people become your family for two or three years, as you know, you do miss them. We are going to be taking part in Relay for Life again this year and we are almost at three entire teams. Emilie's Idols will be seen in thier Black and Pink t-shirts, we hope to see you there and if you would like to join us we would love it. Take care and Cathy, give me a call sometime. I know life is busy but I would love to get together with you sometime and have a good catch up talk. God Bless.

Good afternoon from wintery, blustry hills of Perth County! The beautiful cardinals & bluejays,chick-a-dee's all are busy at the birdfeeders. They are preparing for the storm (worst is yet to come)
Had to think of you & Hannah yesterday, when I was at World's Day of Prayer at Wellesley---when we sang one of Hannah's favourite songs----"His eye is on the sparrow and I know He's watching me!" A beautiful song!
Your mom saw a robin---so spring is on the way!

John and Cathy,

Many hugs (and kisses!) were flying about our house both on Valentine's (my birthday! Who is older, John, you or me?? :-) and on Family Day. We are happy to honor both Hannah and you and Cathy this way, we know you were the most wonderful, loving family, each blessed to have each other. I am glad to hear that the young man was not hurt in the truck wreck and you could be there to assist him....maybe he had a little help from an Angel we know up above? ;-) I think perhaps our nasty cold weather has made it's way down to you, as it has now left Calgary and has been glorious and sunny....I heard the chickadee this morning that likes to taunt me each year, so it felt like spring was possibly around the corner...I know, wishful thinking, but one can hope...it's a long winter! I hope our sunshine will also make it's way down to you very soon. Interior design, eh? Is Cathy perhaps thinking of a career change?? ;-) All the best to you both, I think of you often and so appreciate your thoughts and prayers for Kristine, who by the way, is doing very well from her second surgery.
Hugs,

Tracey xoxo <traceyhewison@shaw.ca>

It was a beautiful day today! I took my new-to-me bike out for a spin and was delighted to learn it only takes 15 mins to bike to work. Maybe shorter, if I can find a good shortcut. On the way back to my place, I drove through a park and couldn't find the trails, but I did find about 30 community garden plots. It was hard to believe that I was in Toronto! Tonight, I talked to Pearl (of the Fair Ladies) and she said she came across a letter and photo of Hannah in her drawer of "important things". She also was busy at the fair this year. I can't believe one month is already past in my internship. I look forward to coming home to the farm on Thanksgiving wkd. I can't come to Oktoberfest the next weekend :( we have a big meeting at our church that I need to be at. I'm excited about our square dance--they found a professional caller and we're getting it catered. Take good care of each other. Lots of love from the big city

Thinking of you on Hannah's special day. I too have fond memories of that week at the cottage with Missy. I remember while we were walking in the parade, she pointed up to the sky and said "moon" and was so delighted in showing it to us. That was the same night she danced with Aunt Sus and later said "more dancing!"
I miss her dearly and think of Missy Jayne often.
Looking forward to seeing you when I come home in the fall
Love,

Sara

Interesting how you and us were given 2/10" rain which is greatly appreciated. The inches seem to fall around us and the corn is showing its stress. The soaker hose isn't long enough for the acres, but sure has been used in the garden and flower beds.
What a precious family photo that is so good to see! Thanks for sharing it!

How nice to see a family photo of all of you. I only recently discovered this site, and spent a tearful 2 hours reading through past journal entries. You are both so strong, and how lovely that in Hannah's short time on this earth, she had you for parents.

Hi Cathy and John: Wow I think of you guys a lot. Since summer has hit I have seen a lot of people who have been asking about you guys. How are you both doing? We had a fun week, Tuesday we went cherry picking in Winona and Thursday I went with our 4-H club to St. Jacobs to the market, Stone Crock and the theatre - great show Legends. If you get a chance go and see it - it is also coming to Grand Bend in August. Going camping this coming week for a couple of nights and then off to a piano teachers camp (and I thought I was going to have a quiet summer). Tonight we are heading to Scott and Tricia Hendersons for Scott's 40th birthday. Take care and keep in touch.

Hi guys,
Well it was great seeing you for a few minutes when you were at the hospital Cathy. You look so great. I was glad to hear that you got to walk to survivor's lap at the Relay in Sarnia, way to go!!! Thank you so much for the gift certificate to East Side Mario's, we will truly enjoy it. You guys are amazing people and I just wanted to let you know how special you are. Take care and God Bless.

Hi John & Cathy,
"It could be worse" is something I've said a hundred times. Funny how an experience like our's introduces us to a whole wide world of "worse". Like you, we could always find something to appreciate and many times it only took a glance down the hospital hallway to see it. I think it's so interesting that you would catch that news item about the little boy from B.C. What are the odds? It was meant to be that you would find out whatever happened to that little boy and his mom. A very sad ending but definitely a story worth sharing. Thanks, John.
I think of you both so often.
I had coffee with Lucille Weber today and we spoke of you with fond memories.

Good to catch up again with you both! What a beautiful story...typical of you both - so caring and helpful to others despite all you have been through yourselves.

Hope you got some much needed rain although I'm sure we could have used a little more!

Thanks for the update! Great to hear about what you've been up to. I just got home from a BBQ with some of the other Lutheran pastors in the city. The weather was a bit coolish and the bugs were getting bad, so I didn't stay too long. I had a great conversation with a new pastor who just moved here from Brazil. He and his wife speak English, German and Porteguese. I want to go over to their place sometime to learn the proper way to make Brazilian beans and rice, I still haven't been able to duplicate it since I was there! I took some chocolate cake to the BBQ and on the way home, the bus driver asked for some and then I stopped at our little corner store and gave some to the Zimbabwe couple who I've become friends with. So all in all it was an interesting evening! I start my new job at Hosanna tomorrow and am looking forward to a 9-5 job again--it's been a long time since I've had that kind of routine. Early Happy Anniversary to you!!! Lots of love

Hi guys,
Cathy it was so nice to see you a week or so ago. Time seems to slip by up here and not even realize it. As you both know so well, it is like a different world here in the hospital. I saw John had stopped into the website and wanted to say thanks. I wanted to update you guys on Emi. We got news today that she is not responding to the chemo. They are going to try something different this week but the outlook is not good. I know this is a horrible way to let you know but I am not good on the phone and this is the best way I know how. They are hopeful the new chemo protocol will show some slowing down of the cancer and that Toronto will do transplant without total remission. So that is where we are with that.
Please take care and talk to you soon.

It's a lovely summer evening in Edmonton. I just love my neighbourhood--it's one of the oldest in the city & it reminds me a lot of where I used to live in Halifax. Each house is differently shaped,(and lots of unique colours like purple, red and green!) and almost all of them have either a big veranda or a glassed in sitting porch. The flowerbeds are quite lovely around here too. I'm realizing just how far north we are compared to back home--the daffodils and tulips and lilacs are still blooming! The odd I thing I don't understand about my neighbourhood is that I never see anyone outside unless they are working. And that is rare too. Most nights I walk around after supper and no one is out! They all have these great comfy chairs on their porches, beautiful flowers and I never see them sitting there to enjoy their yards. I really do think it is because everyone has to work so hard to keep up with the economy and rising costs of living. It is not uncommon to hear of appt rents going up $400 a year. Yikes! Get me back East! Looking forward to seeing you in a few short months! Lots of love

Hi Cathy and John!

As usual, you two are keeping very busy :-) I hope you are feeling well, Cathy and have been out in your garden planting for a great crop this year! I hope John's branch raised lots of money for the hospital from the bake sale. I still have not gotten out into the garden, the weather is not cooperating at all but I am sure there are sunnier days ahead. I am going to have ALOT of weeding to do before the flower bed starts to look half decent, LOL! I am hoping to fully landscape the front lawn this year, which is quite an undertaking, since I truly have no idea what I am doing...I will go get some books on landscaping and do a little research first...I have a blank canvas at the moment, so anything will be an improvement! LOL Have a wonderful weekend, look forward to a new update soon. Love that photo of Hannah on the front page, that burnt orange was a great color on her :-)

Hi guys. Glad to hear things are going well for you. It has been some time since we dropped in. It was good seeing you at the home show John. Well since I spoke to you we have had some disappointing news as well. Emilie has relapsed and was diagnosed with AML a week ago Thursday. She is currently in the hospital and we will be here for quite some time. She is on a two to three month induction protocol of chemo to put her into remission and then we will be heading back to Toronto for a second bone marrow transplant. It is a very scary time for all of us. I knew you would want to be informed, I am just sorry I have to share such sad news. Emilie is strong and so far holding her own with the chemo. Talk to you soon. Drop by our caringbridge site. www.caringbridge.org/visit/emiliesmith.

Hi Cathy and John

Just been catching up (for the first time in a long while) on your diary. I'm so glad that your are doing well Cathy and that you are finished your treatment and you seem to be recovering well. Whenever I read up on what you have been up to, you always seem to be so busy. It makes me feel quite lazy in comparason. Where do you get your energy??

Everyone is fine here (Bert sends his regards too). We have had a very dry spell of weather this past couple of months making all the spring work easy. Today it is raining very heavily, hopefully just a "blip" in our otherwise good weather of late.

Best wishes to both of you from both of us!!

Hi Cathy,

Tulips, what tulips? Here it was SNOWING most of the day. My tulips are not peeking out of their greenery quite yet, and I don't blame them. I am sure as soon as it warms up (and I am holding fast the belief that it eventually will) they will explode into bloom.

I am sure your pie worked out just fine, if it looks funny just put some icecream (or whipcream) on top; however, it would still taste great.

Hugs,

Nice to hear from you. It sounds like you and John are busy - tis the season! I'm just grateful we are finally getting some sunny weather. I am looking forward to only 2 more driving days to London and then I am finished!
Elderberry pie - yummy! I sure hope you used sugar!
John should just be happy you are helping to pick stones. I never liked that job because the guys (i.e. my brothers) always seemed to be the one on the tractor! Maybe it would be more fun if I was collecting rocks for my flower beds like you were doing!
Good to hear from you Cathy! Enjoy this spring weather!

Hello John and Cathy,
We have been thinking of you guys often and are so happy to hear about your wonderful progress Cathy! My Mom is celebrating 5 years post treatment from breast cancer this spring! May the sunshine of spring bring you even more strength and resilience.
We are still mucking around in several inches of lovely mud but hope a nice rain will clean things up a bit. The calves are coming fast and furious this time of year and Allison may have her first "bottle baby" calf... we'll probably know in a day or so. I miss the sheep with their lambs frollicing about but I don't miss all the chores!!! I added some daffodil bulbs for Hannah in my "Memories" garden (a spot where I put some favourite/special flowers in memory of friends and family)and they are just starting to peek through.
Keep up the positive work you two!!

Hi Cathy and John,
Just checked in to see how you are and found Hannah's spring picture and your spring thoughts. We were cross-country skiing last week in the mountains near a very cold Jasper. Then came home to find winter had returned to New Dundee. I love snow but would prefer to have it in December and January rather than covering the Easter bunny's hidden eggs. I wonder how Brenda's birthday party was, and the Pamela Wallin lecture. Are you back at work yet - your journal said maybe in early April Hope you are feeling well and strong.
Hugs from here,

Hello Cathy and John.

We're dropping in to wish you both a blessed Easter. You have been in our prayers and thoughts. What a joy to read your diary. Your faith and love for one another fairly beams through the monitor. It's a good thing you can't see me as I read it - tears of joy my dears. I got so caught up in reading that I suddenly realized it was late morning and I'm still in my pjs!

I'm sorry to be so lax about keeping in touch - blame it on Norm being retired *grin*. You have certainly been in my thoughts. The calendar is as chaotic as ever. The hip replacement went well but the physio has been hampered by other things. However being stubborn has its benefits (You have a touch of that too Cath!) and I WILL get hiking again!

Great news here last week. Norm's PSA had doubled in the past year and that combined with more extensive biopsies and the recent death of our brother-in-law (prostate cancer), had us both anxiously awaiting the results. No cancer! That was the cake - the icing was a phone call from Chris telling us that they are expecting again - our second grandchild is due in October. They are coming to visit in June. It's so hard to finally have grandchildren and to have them living in Calgary.

Thank you for keeping your diary Cathy and John. I wonder if you realize how far your inspirational diary reaches and the lives that it touches.

With affection

Hi Cathy & John: Spring is on the way! I saw my first robin on Saturday, just outside our window....and the second one on our way to London. The "Music for a Cure" concert was wonderful! Our young university friend, Katherine, who organized the event did a super job in co-ordinating fellow music students and faculty members for the afternoon performance. It was so touching, that the event was dedicated in memory of Hannah. We all know how much she appreciated music and how we all were uplifted when we sang together.....and so it was very fitting that she was remembered at this event. Stay tuned to hear total receipts of the fundraiser. Take care...sending you lots of love & hugs ----

Cathy,

Hurray, I was so happy to read today that you are done your radiation treatments! I hope you and John had a very nice night out celebrating on Sunday :-) Drive safely on your way to London on Friday for your IV.
Today looks to be the beginning of the 'big melt' here in Calgary. The sun is shining out there, but I am busy doing laundry and trying to clean up this messy office...I think I am in early 'spring cleaning' mode, as I was trying to motivate myself this morning by reading the 'Flylady' site :-) Callum and I had a wonderful time last week at the Chevron 'Zoo School' at the Calgary Zoo. We were able to observe and sketch the meerkats, gorillas, giraffes, hippos and more. We also went to a conference room where we had a sneak peek at the Zoo's plans for their new Arctic/Antarctic exhibits, which are very large and well thought out for the animals who will one day make their home there. One of the highlights was seeing the two year old grizzly cubs (both rescued as they were left motherless, they are not related but both lost their mom's) playfighting in the snow, I took quite a bit of video footage, I will be sure to send some to you for your viewing pleasure :-) Have a wonderful week and I hope it starts to warm up in your neck of the woods!

Hi Cathy,
By now you should have finished your radiation. Hooray! We had winter with a vengeance here this week. I hope you were able to get to London and have this stage of the journey behind you. My Mom fell in early Feb and is in hospital awaiting a place in a long term care facility. We did not even venture from here to Kitchener to see her on Thursday. With the blowing snow and icy roads it was safer to stay home. I am going to make Mom a family photo quilt and Esther in New Hamburg says the best place to get photos transferred to fabric is St. Jacobs Printery. That brings back memories. Haven't been there since our AALP days but I will head up one day this week.
Thinking of you and sending lots of hugs your way.

Hi John & Cathy!
Just stopping by to say hi and let you know that we think of you often particularly around Hannah's "angelversary". It's hard to believe that it has been 2 years.
Glad to hear that your treatments are going well, Cathy. Stay strong!

Hello John and Cathy
I have a lump in my throat as I write this. We think of you both often and your dear Angel Hannah. It is hard to believe 2 years have passed since Hannah earned her wings. We are happy to hear that Cathy's treatments are going well. Our Katelyn continues to maintain her health and her zest for life. She proudly entered a gymathon on Sunday to help them raise money for new equipment they deperately need. She loves gymnastics. We wish you both all the best in the days ahead.

Hi Cathy and John
Just a quick note to say hi. Glad to hear the radiation treatments continue to go well - good report from the oncologist too. I was thinking about you this weekend as were many of your friends - you picked a nice picture to honour Hannah's memory.

Had a few minutes today at work and thought I would check in on the Youngs. Glad to hear that Cathy's treatments are progressing and I wish you both well wishes. It is stormy outside today and my younger 2 kids were home from school today with no buses running. My oldest son Matthew is in College in Kitchener and had a wild ride there last night but made it safe. Brrrr Winter. Keep warm.

John and Cathy,

Yesterday on Hannah's angelversary, as we were driving back from a boat trip, I saw a butterfly drop out of the sky and linger, floating in the air above the tarmac road, as we sped towards it,until it almost touched the windshield and then just as we were upon it, it floated up again and was gone....I remember thinking how odd that was, but I am only now putting two and two together. It really does make you wonder.
The butterfly quilt photo was the perfect choice and Hannah looks so beautiful.Thank you for sharing the new photos also, it was lovely to see Hannah as a baby and I had not seen the other photos previously either. Thank you for always sharing Hannah so generously with all of us and letting us love her too.
I am so happy to hear that Cathy's treatment continues to progress as we would like to hear, this is such good news. I wonder if this aloe gel that everyone uses here for burns would help to sooth Cathy's radiation 'tan' at all? Or maybe even just the plant itself, we used to have one and rub it on our skin, it seemed to help.
We will be in a bit of shock returning home to Calgary, we have heard that it has been -30C with the windchill....coming from above 80F will no doubt take a bit of adjustment! I guess winter had to arrive at some point!
We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, and remembering Hannah always...

John and Cathy, I was out running around all day yesterday, and didn't get a chance to sign in. You were in my thoughts though, as was sweet Hannah. I was at Costco, and picked up a book..something like "Angels All Around Us". I just flipped it open randomly, and opened it to a page about our angels often coming back to us as butterflies to let us know they're ok. How neat that I opened your page and you have posted a picture of Hannah with a butterfly quilt, and you mentioned butterflies. I really do believe they are all around us.
Take care,

We're almost an hour past Hannah's "angelversary date", but we did think of her on this special day and thanks to this website, the pictures we have, and hearing the two of you mention her (even, no matter how briefly) in your conversations, the memory of a wonderful girl stays strong with us.

It's always a good idea to be on the side of caution and go with the extra week of radiation. Cathy, we are pulling for you and if there's anything we can do to help, let us know. Heather would like a day to go with you to London. We'll be in touch.

Hi Cathy and John,
Marianne Hebb from Childcan. I just popped in to see how things were going; Cathy. Glad to hear your post-surgery results were so encouraging. I am glad for you that your treatment has started and will be over as quickly as possible. It was such a pleasure meeting you both at Leah's Wish in September. I had heard many wonderful things about you both and beautiful Hannah!! Cathy, I am sure that Hannah is keeping her "little angel wings" wrapped around her mom through this journey! Let me know if there is anything I can do or if you need anything while in London.

My thoughts, prayers and positive thoughts are with you!

Hi Cathy and John
Glad to hear that the treatments are going well. I know all about driving to London (less than 20 days left in this block) and I can't wait! It's too bad you are coming from the other direction otherwise I could bring you along with me!
That is a cute picture of Hannah. It looks like she was about 4-6 months old? I remember meeting her and holding her for the first time around this age. She was sooo good and cute!
Thinking of you, drive safely.

Hi guys,
Wow Cathy, you are a trooper. You have gone through so much and still have such a positive attitude. I hope the weather cooperates for you as well, although I'm sure today was a rough drive. I hope you stayed in London today as the weather is to be worse tomorrow. Emilie is doing well, but fighting many viruses this year. It is like being in Kindergarten all over again, and catching all the bugs that are going around. Overall she is doing awesome. She was in London for the day on Tuesday, visiting the ER with a temp of 39.2 but we were fortunate and sent home by the evening. It was good to sleep in our own beds. She has a viral infection as well as a bacterial bladder infection, she is feeling much better today.
Just wanted to let you guys know myself and Maddi (my youngest daughter, 7), are participating in the Make A Wish foundations St. Valentine's Day Hair Massacre. We currently have blue hair and on Feb. 13 we are going to London to have our heads shaved. We are hoping to raise $3000. We are going to be in The Observer in the next couple of days. If you can help us out at all it would be appreciated. Check out Emilie's website for more info and the link for donations. www.caringbridge.org/visit/emiliesmith
Hope all continues to go well for you. Maybe once everyone is better we can get together for a coffee. It would be great to see you.

I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you and praying that your therapy is going well. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing yourselves and Hannah with "health care workers", like myself. I've learned so much from Hannah's strength and feel so grateful for being able to have met her and yourselves.

All the best,

A quick hello from New Dundee. Tomorrow is Christine Dukelow's retirment party in Guelph. Brenda, Ann & I are having dinner - we'll be thinking of you for sure.
Tonight was ND Optimist Youth Appreciation annual banquet. Guest speaker was Samantha Whiteside from New Hamburg who swam across Lake Ontario last summer and plans to do it again (even faster) this summer. Wow - an amazing young woman. We sat with Angie and Kevin Shantz and their daughter Katelynn who was receiving one of the youth appreciation awards. Nice to have a visit with them.
I hope all is progressing on track with your radiation treatments.
Thinking about you and sending lots of hugs your way.

Heloooo! Just doing a quick check of e-mail before bed and also to see what you two have been up to. Loved your journal entry Cathy - it was like we were having a little visit together - very nice. Keep up the good work. I have no idea what it feels like to be going through all of this, but I certainly am amazed at your courage, strength and sense of humour! As the Aussies would say -"Good on ya mate!" We continue to think of you often and pray for only good news in 2007. Say hi to John and hope he had fun at the hockey game. We went to see the Leafs play last week. A once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us to go, and the kids were thrilled! The Leafs lost, but it was great any way.
All the best in the next bit as you go through the radiation process now. Take it easy and take care!

Hi Cathy
Great to hear from you although John does do a great job updating the website. That is good news that only 2 of 12 nodes were positive - I think I understood that correctly. I hope the weather cooperates for you and your drive to London. I can relate driving back and forth for school but this term hopefully only 3 days a week. I have the countdown on already!
I hope the radiation treatment goes well. Safe driving and say hello to John.

I finally got around to sending out my Christmas Cards which are now Happy New Year ones. Mark brought yours back to me after stamping all of the others and told me your address wasn't correct. Now I'm wondering if I did that last year too. Anyway, my records are up to date for now, hopefully.
We're off to St. Kitts Monday morning for a week with the kids and Mark's parents. We're stocked up on drugs for almost anything to prevent anyone from being in misery for more than a day. Ashleigh and Jordan are really excited...well us too :)

I thought of you on your Birthday Cathy...I remember the good ol days when we worked together...we used to have so many laughs...especially over Craig. I found an old card from you the other day asking about my brother's love life as he used to be another one of our amusements. Did I ever tell you he finally married the girl he dated on and off for 9 years. They live in Ottawa with their 3 children.

Our Christmas was good. It was great to get snow for boxing day. We made two big snowmen with the kids. I think that was the first time in a long time that we were all outside playing as a family. We don't do that nearly enough!

Greetings from Avonmore. Jeff and Jennifer emailed us with your recent news. I had no idea what you have been dealing with these past few months. I spent most of my day(with coffee and tissue in hand)reading the journal entries from the very beginning. Your strength is unbelievable and an inspiration to so many. I think back to the good old ROS days in Guelph, when our lives seemed less complicated. Must have been the training ground where you leared to deal with so much yet be able to keep on smiling. You are certainly in our thoughts, keep the faith.

Hey guys
I sure miss Hannah at Christmas. Last night when we were singing Silent Night by candlelight in church all I could think of was that magical night we had in Baden singing around the piano. I think that was the same night that Hannah drew a picture of "Sara's little feet". Where she came up with some of her stories---I don't know! but I sure miss them. I'm looking forward to seeing a cardinal when I'm back East--all we have in the city are magpies and the occasional chickadee. Take good care of each other. Lots of love,

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Young,
This message is from Tara. I was one of the residents who helped take care of Hannah during her stays at CHWO. I check in at your site often, as Hannah was such a special little girl, and loved by all the staff. I know the resident group remembered her often. Happy Birthday, Cathy! What a neat blessing, that today was the day I decided I needed to catch up on your news, as I wrote your Xmas card (on it's way soon!)and here I come to find it is your special day! :-) I was so happy to read that your MRI was clear, your surgery went well and you are recovering so well. I hope you have been able to get out and do some shopping, or have John do some for you :-) Do you have much snow, I wonder? We just have the last dregs of the last snowfall, which was some time ago now, we are currently having a chinook and sitting about plus 7C, lovely and brown :-) It is supposed to get a bit colder on the weekend, then start warming again...strange weather, this! Callum is lying all snuggled on the couch in the family room, he just let out a cough that sounded much like a seal, he is not feeling so well. I have been a good nurse all morning, fetching him grape tylenol, hot chocolate, cold water and 'egg mcmuffin' (actually, a fried egg on wheat bread, lol)....something has been going around the school, apparently it is a nasty one and it seems my wee boy has caught it! We will have to do much handwashing and hope for the best before Christmas, as apparently, this bug likes to run through the whole family. I am going to take a short video of Callum sending his Christmas wishes to you and email it soon :-) Wishing you a magical holiday season,
love Tracey xo

Thanks for the update. I'm so glad to hear that Cathy hasn't had to have painkillers and is even able to "help" make soup.
I ran into Dr. Kathy a couple of weeks ago. It was lovely and painful at the same time. But a good kind of pain. She helps bring back the happy memories of the time Caedan and Hannah were in the hospital. What a blessing she was to us and all the families that knew her then.

Another quick hello from New Dundee. Glad to hear you are feeling okay, Cathy, without painkillers. Your story about the nurse who is still expecting you for surgery reminds me of a visit with my Mom last week. We were admiring the tree in the lobby at Lanark and she told me it was left over from Christmas. It must seem that way when it goes up so early - but it is very pretty.
Sending lots of hugs your way.

Dear Cathy and John
So glad to hear that the surgery went well and the others tests were clear - hard to imagine what is considered out-patient surgery these days! I trust home care will look after you well and mostly it is easier to get better at home. I think of both of you often and check the website regularly. I start out-patient physiotherapy on my hip tomorrow - so that's another stage in my journey of recovery from hip replacement surgery. Please know you're both thought of fondly by so many every single day!

Hi Cathy and John,
So glad to hear than your surgery went smoothly, Cathy. I cannot imagine them sending you home on the same day but when I stop to think I guess that's a good sign. Denny has had home care nurses a couple of times and we have found them extremely helpful. I'm sure you will also. Will be thinking about you as your birthday approaches and hope that you are well enough to enjoy a bit of a celebration - at the very least a piece of cake. John, that's a hint. How are you at baking?

Hi guys, Merry Christmas
We are doing our Caring Bridge Family Merry Christmas rounds and of course thought of the two of you. We often think of Hannah and especially at this time of year, we remember all of our friends that have now joined the angels. We remember the times she was walking up and down the hallway with all her curls the first time we saw her. It was right before the Christmas holidays started in 2004, when Emilie had just came back from Toronto. She caught our attention immediately. She gave Emi a big smile. Emilie is doing great. She had lost 29 pounds since July 1st, being off the steroids. She is doing awesome at school and seems to be growing into a very beautiful young girl. We are very proud of her. Please know that our thoughts are often with the two of you. Try to have a healthy and happy holiday season.

Hi Guys,
We have enough snow on the ground now to cover any leaves that did not get raked - hope you do too. Our roofers were about 75% finished last week when the rain started again. This morning they were here early shoveling the snow off the roof so they could complete the job. Made me thankful I am not a roofer!
Will be thinking about you later this week.

Hey guys
I can't believe you're still able to rake leaves!!! We've had about 60 cm of snow so far and it's supposed to snow again tonight. At least it's getting warmer, up to -1 today, what a change from the -40 just a little while ago!
I'm recovering from the flu, so I've been home the last few days and will postpone starting my new job doing chaplaincy at the nursing home until next week. I'll be thinking of you both on Tuesday.

Hi Cathy, Hi John!

I did some catching up with you this morning, life has gotten very busy since Callum also started playing competitive hockey and I have not been out and about CB as much as I would like! Cathy, I hope you will do well with this new drug and are doing ok with the side effects. You remain in our thoughts and prayers. John, we did not have the usual beautiful fall that I so love each year either, but you sound like you have had more rain. They are saying now that we shall be having an artic front coming through end of the week, just in time for Hallowe'en, what a shame for the children...guess they'll be wearing snow suits over or under their costumes! What beautiful pumpkins you took to the fundraiser, and what a wonderful thing that is...great job raising all that money for CHF. I know Hannah is very proud of her Mommy and Daddy's efforts :-) I wish we lived closer, so I could also have a pumpkin from 'Hannah's Patch'. I will have to settle for a store pumpkin, I'm afraid. I am thinking that next year, we will use the space behind our garage to have our own pumpkin patch, I am looking forward to the challenge! I will be sending you an email soon, with some photos taken at our Terry Fox run and links to Quinn and Callum's team websites. Have a wonderful week and I hope things dry up for you!
Hugs,

Hi, John and Cathy,
I am so sorry to hear of your soybean/corn predicament. Makes my gardening woes pale by comparison. One watches the daily probs with a shriek and a wail.
We HAVE managed to bring in the walnut crop. They are sitting in 8 bags of sogginess in the back yard waiting for (thank goodness) this week's green pickup. Have NOT made tincture as my organic friend advises that it pretty well nails your liver, even as it renders you fluke free. My reasoning is more prosaic. Do not wish to have a walnut kitchen.....too dark.
Cathy, I think of you and hope you are managing O.K. as O.K. is fabulous in the circumstances. Onward and upward to a happy and healthy 2007.

Hello Cathy and John: Am glad to hear that you are hanging in there with your chemo treatments - Good news!
I was reading one of your messages about Monarch butterflies and for the last 2 years we have nurtured a rather large patch of milkweed beside our driveway. The first caterpillar has 'spun' its chrysalis and attached itself to the side of the house. The girls and Zachary think this is really special to watch. Hello, I haven't been able to look at the website in awhile but Cathy I am sorry to hear what you are going through. You seem to be staying strong which is awsome, I'm not sure if you's really remember us but we were near you in PCCU with Lawson the baby boy that had a brain injury, you also gave us one of Hannah's favorite books and just so you know it is now Lawson's favorite books. He is doing well we found out in the summer that he was cleared from all doctors so we have no more trips to London, we also had a huge party in the park for him and for everyone that helped up, we got $90 to donate to PCCU (which Steve and I are going to match) I really hope we can see you's sometime. John & Cathy, you have a beautiful garden. Didn't the weeds grow extra much this year? We finally got new tines for our tiller...so perhaps that was our problem. Since fresh fruit is not permissable at present, could you freeze some delicious fruit salad to enjoy your fresh fruit later? This is the first year we picked blueberries in New Hamburg as well. Sure is nice not to have to make as long a drive...and they are yummy! Wonder if Leonard will see you at the farmshow in Woodstock today. Remembering you in prayer!

Hi guys, Well, things are going well here with Emilie. She has returned to school full time this year and is in grade 7. She seems to be settling in well to her ordinary life and enjoying all the things a twelve year old girl should. She had a birthday on the 7th of this month. It is often hard to remember what life was life before all of this cancer stuff but I think we are starting to see some of it. My heart is sad when I read your "what ifs" I know that Hannah is enjoying her first day of Kindergarten with her new angel friends up in heaven and they are all what makes this earth bright every night. Today is Chelsey's 21st birthday and she headed back to Fanshawe for her 2nd of 3 years. We miss you guys, and think of you everyday. Glad you are fairing well with your treatments Cathy - they will be done soon! Thanks for the newsy updates John. You both are strong people.

Dear Cathy and John,

So glad Cathy, you are heading in a positive direction. We were all disappointed with the rain cancelling our reunion but we will try next year, perhaps in Kitchener.
Just heard over the radio, there were 5x the number of Monarch butterflies this year!
Your garden must be glorious in colour. My bushes are nice and lush,my grapevine over the back porch is especially lovely-was heavy with grapes until pesky raccoons ate most of them.
Angus and William spent a week with Shelley and Scott-they were at a French immersion camp in Waterloo and enjoyed swimming, hiking, roller blading and rock climbing. This past week, they spent four days with me-hiking to different playgrounds and Pioneer Village. They enjoyed helping the welder making a hook at his kiln and trying lawn crochet and stilt walking.
William is devouring books-locks himself in the bathroom so Angus won't disturb his reading and Angus enjoys art and creating paper kites etc. Both boys will be in the same school this fall ,Angus starting grade 1 in French immersion.
Cousins Kelyn and Henry are great buddies-take turns bossing each other.
Several organic blueberries are now in my freezer (from New Hamburg) so my cereal will be extra tasty this winter.
Love to you both, Aunt Joyce

Cathy,

You are at the half way point of your chemo, hurray! I am very sorry to hear about your Great Aunt's passing and that you won't be able to attend the funeral, but I have no doubt that she would truly understand. I hope to hear that your counts are up soon and the downward trend is stopped with the special shot. It does not seem right that a single dose costs so much money, it hardly seems fair when a person is in such a battle...I am so glad that you have such great health plans from work. When I hear things like that, it makes me very suspicious of the drug companies motives, to say the least.
Our weather of late has been quite lovely and a bit warmer than usual for this time of year. We had a week camping at Buffalo Lake, we stayed at Ol' Macdonald Resort. Driving to Stettler to pick up some supplies and seeing all the fields ready for harvest, I thought a number of times of you, John and Hannah. My favorite photo of Hannah was the one with the pumpkins, I just love that one :-) Quinn and Callum loved visiting with the animals and especially had many laughs over the snorting piglets. We also saw baby bunnies, which were adorable. There were goats, sheep, a dove, chickens, rooster (heard him crowing very early one morning!), bunnies, two piglets and a sweet pony with one deformed hoof. I took a number of photos and hope to figure out how to download to the computer so I can show you.
Take special care, thinking of you lots,

Half way there Cathy - that is great! I hope you are recovering well after your 4th round of chemo. I can't believe how much those injections cost but it sounds like they do the trick at bringing cell counts up to where they should be. Thank GOD for health benefits too! Enjoy the long weekend.

We're so happy to read your latest update. What great news!

Everytime I read your gardening stories I feel a built guilty - besides our sweet corn (our farm gate sales have been keeping us busy) all my other seed packets are still sitting in the closet..unplanted! Hopefully the kids and I will be better organized next year!

Things are getting crazy around us with the IPM/Rural Expo less than a month away. I now appreciate all those meetings you went to leading up to the Waterloo Match when I was living at the Sod Farm!

Hi Cathy and John!
Thanks for the update, always wondering what you are getting up to :-) The garden is keeping you busy, I can't wait to see the photos of the huge sunflowers! I am glad to hear that you have been enjoying some time away from home. When you mentioned the tour of the farm, it made me think of the tour I took in Wales of a dairy farm...I think I was only 13 or 14, I haven't thought of that in years! It was most interesting! I am so thrilled to hear that the tumor has shrunk...I can't think of a better Xmas present than hearing that all of that nasty tumor is removed and gone forever. You remain in our thoughts and prayers, I will email soon, I think I owe you one, Cathy! (soybeans, yum!!) Quinn and Callum are doing very well, busy with summer fun and going to the dirtbike track. We are off to Buffalo Lake to camp at Ol' MacDonald Resort for five days, leaving on Sunday. A lovely end to a really great summer, we feel so blessed.

Hi Friends
I was in total shock to read about Cathy. I know you folks are very strong and will get through this. As much as we hate the sounds of all those drugs, and know the side effects, we pray that Cathy will responded to them.
We are getting things together for In memeory of Leah's Wish day (Silent Auction and Blood clinic). It will be held on Sept 26. If Cathy is feeling up to it, it would be nice to have you come up again this year. There's a guy getting his head buzzed from the Canadian Blood Services. He had Cancer and won the battle.
We will be keeping you both in our prayers.

Hi guys,
Glad to hear Cathy is feeling good. Are you surviving the heat this week, it is brutal. We were in London all day as Emi had her psycho-social testing for school completed with Dr. Downy. It was a long day, 9 to 4, and I sat in the waiting room all day. We can't complain though, as she is feeling great and off her steroids, hopefully for good!!! We go back to London on Aug. 23/06 for her two year post transplant check up with all the frills and whistles (another long day!!). Talk to you soon and keep cool.

Hi Cathy and John,

So glad to hear that Cathy continues to do well and is even able to get in to do some work at her new job. The garden sounds fantastic, you are right, there is nothing like fresh picked veggies! I did manage to get down to the farmer's market by my Mom's house last Wednesday, the new potatoes and green beans were so, so delicious!! The blueberries in the stores right now are wonderful, the strawberries are awful, I will have to take the boys out to a 'you pick them' farm :-) Tomorrow the whole family is heading downtown for Indian at a restaurant we have not tried yet, and we are hoping to leave for a week of camping on Monday. Not sure if we will go to Sylvan Lake or Aspen Beach yet, I have been remiss in booking!! There are plenty of super places to camp, so I am not too worried. Steve has been doing a good job of prepping the house for restaining and we will continue working on that when we get home. Hope you can get some sunshine so you can get that wheat crop off the fields :-) Take care,
hugs,

Greetings from New Dundee. Glad to hear that the treatments are going okay Cathy and that you are able to go to work. I must keep Denny away from your guest book. If sees your Aunt Jean's note about free kittens he'll be off to N.H. to take a look ... and there is no such thing as 'just a look' when it comes to kittens! Glad you enjoyed the Crokinole video. Good morning! I got a morning off of chores, so thought I would check on you two and see what you've been up to! Glad to hear you are feeling pretty well Cathy. Nothing like a little TLC from your mom when you don't feel well! Even when we are fourty something! Came across a picture the other day in one of our scrapbooks of the kids blowing out candles on muffins we had made to celebrate Hannah's first birthday...so much has happened since then. You are still in our thoughts and prayers as much as you were back then, and send you lots of hugs and best wishes.
Our little garden has done well this summer too with all of the moisture. The kids have been busy picking the beans and peas. Thomas is very excited about his corn! Keeps checking it daily to see if it is ready. Last night after soccer he went out and was watering it until I reminded him we just had 1 1/2 inches of rain the night before! He is keen! Had his 10th birthday on Wednesday...he was making plans on Tuesday what he and his friends were going to play for the party and he suggested Pin the Tail on the Donkey. I wondered if maybe they were too old to play that game and he said "Mom it's a classic game! Besides I'm trying to relive the glory days of my youth!" What a kid...so much like his dad!
Give us a call if you are at the cottage again and we can even meet you somewhere for a visit. Take care of each other and enjoy your summer!

Thanks for your faithful updates on the site, John. We had been thinking about you two for some time and recently decided to look up the caringbridge site after having lost track of it for a number of months. As it turned out, our first sign-in was the day after you posted the Father's Day message. Strange how timing works sometimes. We were of course shocked and stunned to hear your news, Cathy, but relieved to hear you are managing the treatment regimen so far. We've known a couple people through work and church to go through the same thing, successfully. Chemo is no picnic, but you will get through it. Thinking of you both...

Good Morning! Very foggy up here this am! John flew home from 2 days of meetings in B.C. last night and Colleen is off at hockey camp this week so the boys and I had a chance to do some fun things together. We've hardly been home since Monday, but it is back to work today!
Hoping that your 2nd chemo goes well tomorrow and in the days to follow Cathy. By the sounds of the weathewr report, it will be a good weekend to stay inside out of the heat that is on the way! Our neighbours nephew is getting married on their farm on Saturday. I don't think I would want to be at an outdoor wedding this weekend! Remember how hot it was the day of your wedding? David Wilcox, wow, I have not seen him since my college days in Toronto! Ribfest sounds very yummy, I hope you enjoyed the chicken and ribs. I love the new photo of Hannah, it catches her personality very well :-) I wonder what Hannah would have thought of Mommy with long, red hair?? Hmmmm! :-) The flower beds in my back garden are so overgrown, I am not sure where to start! I am not a big gardener, but I am trying to learn. I guess I just start pulling! Have you planted many pumpkins, I wonder? I think that was my favorite photo of Hannah, with the pumpkins :-)
Take special care, you remain in our prayers,
big hugs and love,

Tracey and family xoxo HAB (enjoying Stampede in Calgary!) <traceyhewison@shaw.ca>

Hi John & Cathy;
I'm really glad that you keep this website up to date. As the two of you have so many international friends that this is to perfect way to keep all of us informed.
Cathy I'm glad the treatments are manageable; I know when Ken was going through treatment keeping a positive attitude, sense of humour and keeping busy as much as possible helps the time pass quickly.
It's these little bumps in the road that keeps life so interesting. It would be nice to have a straight road for awhile to catch your breath.
Hugs a Kisses any many prayers.

Hi, folks. Yes, wigs are an interesting shopping item. It's funny how much changes with hair colour! The up-side is that it gives you a bit of a chance to change your "look" and I hope you found one you like.
As for "Itsy Bitsy" et al, I had almost forgotten the joys of teaching that song to children. It is a universal hit, but good for Hannah to even out the gender bias.
Best of luck on Friday, Cathy; we'll be thinking of you.

A very quick hello! Hope you are still feeling okay, Cathy. Did we have a short office? Or do I have a short memory? I don't recall you having to reach top shelves in Guelph. I just remember the fireman's hat that sat on a top shelf so you could lead us out of the building - which fortunately you were not called upon to do very often!
Love and hugs to you both,

This is my first visit to your site. I am a "chemo" angel for another sweet little girl on the Caringbridge site. I too went thru the journey of fighting breast cancer. It was a very tough journey, but the big reward is survival. I was at first so afraid to lose my hair and perhaps a breast, but once it really sunk in, none of that mattered. It was all about living. I still had too many things to accomplish in my life.

My heart aches for the loss of your precious little daughter. I always say, that an adult going thru the cancer journey pales to that of an innocent child. Being diagnoised with breast cancer, is like joining a club that no one else wants to belong to. However, I found such strength and inspiration from other women that had walked in my shoes. To see that they had hair, and were living normal lives, gave me hope on my hardest days.

Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts. I pray that someday soon that they will find a cure, so that no other family will have to learn to live without their child and that no one ever has to endure the treatment for cancer. Bless you. Connie

Happy belated Canada Day! I hope you were able to take in some beautiful fireworks. I am very happy to hear that Cathy continues to feel better and better and look forward to seeing a photo with her funky new 'do'. :-) Of course, I loved seeing the photo of Hannah on Canada Day, waving her little flag and holding tightly onto Daddy's finger. I know she is watching over you both now and sending strength to her Mommy. I was going to tell you, I have now switched from dairy to soy milk, it is very tasty... and so has Steve! The boys, however, have not shown a willingness to join us :-) Who knows, maybe by a very long route, I am getting to have some of your wonderful soybeans, ha ha!

Hello John & Cathy,

I'm not sure if you remember me. My name is Renee, our daughters were in LHSC at the same time. Hannah was in 7 West and Steph was in 7 South. Steph had a brain tumour removed but at the time wasn't receiving chemo or radiation so she was in a different wing. We used to see you guys at the Coffee Hour put on by those fine folks from Childcan. We were in Toronto at a Rehab centre and didn't hear about Hannah until 4 months after. I am so sorry, her smile was precious. Now, to hear Cathy has cancer is just awful, I will definitely be praying for your family tonight and every night. I didn't even know you had a CB sight until I saw a link on Shauna's sight. I must get going, Canada celebrations and all to ready for. My family is going to watch the fireworks and I'm going to work a school Bingo to raise funds for the Home & School Association. I'll drop in soon. Praying all goes well.

Take Care,

Kathy, just a little note from Mandaumin to let you know that I think of you often and I'm praying hard that all goes successfully. It's a mean old world, isn't it - and why is it that bad things happen to the best people. But it's been said many times that these things are given to the "people who are strong enough to bear up under the load". Kathy we admire your strength and have faith that you will beat this one. Of course, we know that you've got the best husband and the best in-laws to comfort you.

John & Cathy

Hello Friends

I signed on today to tell you we did the Relay for Life on Friday here in London and that very close by our Angel Brennan's luminary was a luminary for Angel Hannah. We shared some great memories of Hannah. We especially remembered her facination with pony tails and Brennan's earings. How cute she was! I also found it interesting that with the hundreds of luminaries they ended up so close together as they so often had at Children's. On to your update - I was shocked and saddened by your news. I know your beautiful Angel will be watching over you and she will guide you and keep you strong. I am sure she inspires you everyday and that will give you the strength and courage to face this again. Finally HAIR oh my gosh after years of treatments and bald little girls I have learned hair is over rated and bald is absolutely beautiful. Beauty radiates from within and Cathy you always radiate!

In our thoughts and prayers

Hi Cathy and John,
I am staring at the screen wondering what can I possibly say. I am in shock - as I'm sure you must be too. The Father's Day picture of you and Hannah, John, says so much. It's lovely, filled with loving memories. And I have fond memories of your wedding day as well. I think of you often when I drive past the Hubertushaus and remember how thrilled I was to be invited to propose the toast to Cathy. And now here you are receiving such bleak news and sharing it with us on Father's Day. Yet somehow, as others have said, I know you will face this newest challenge (what an awful, cliche word but I cannot think of another)with the same strength and grace that we have admired in the past. We are thinking of you - what else can I say. With love and hugs,

Have you had time to take a breath yet? I am so sorry to hear about your news. I have no words for you that seem appropriate, but that I'm thinking of you and praying for you. It sounds like you have some great connections for support, but I am a nurse in an operating room, so if at any time you have any questions about what goes on behind the swinging doors, please don't hesitate to email me.
Congratulations on your anniversary, it sounds like you had a nice time together. Happy Belated Father's Day, I love the picture of you and Hannah!

I was thinking of you, John and Cathy, this weekend. We had a team in the London Relay for LIfe and I saw the luminaries dedicated to Hannah. I have been thinking of what an inspiration and more, that you were to us and other families dealing with such difficult times in our children's lives. Justin continues to do well. We are so saddened to hear that you and John will be facing another fight. You will be well prepared and I'm sure you will face this battle with confidence and humour. Best wishes

Thoughts and prayers don't seem nearly enough, but you can sure count on them from me. Cathy and John,
I am so sorry to hear this latest news about Cathy. Cancer stinks, we all know that. But our Cathy is strong and I know she will come through this battle victorious. My Aunty Phyllis is a survivor, I know of many more survivors than angels, this is a cancer that we can beat! Last week, my friend Leslie's Mom was dx with breast cancer also. She went straight to surgery, we are awaiting news on the lymph nodes, she will be having radiation, hopefully no chemo. It seems every woman dx is very, very individual and each must fight it in her own way. Cathy will get through this in her own way. We will keep her in our prayers every day and send her all our best energy. Everyone at HAB will be thinking of Cathy and of you John as well.
Hugs and blessings,

Dear Cathy and John: I have thought of basically nothing else since Susan called me with the bad news. I agree ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - I am angry right now. Why do such bad things happen to such great people? Anyway, Cathy please know that your friends are here and thinking of you. John if you need any help don't hesitate to ask. I so enjoyed our weekend together at the Relay to Life a great chance to reconnect. Also doing the Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a great weekend that I enjoyed last year - maybe sometime we will have to put a team into that. My friend Susan Elmes has told me to tell you that anytime you want to talk to a survivor please don't hesitate to call her or she can meet you for coffee. I love you guys.

Dear John & Cathy, more lovely photos of Hannah, I just love to see her with a smile and looking so sweet. You two are always so busy and what a garden you must have, Jackie is always busy but I have slowed down a lot, something to do with age maybe or am I getting lazy? When are you coming over here? hopefully you will have time to come and see us.
We are having a few days at Holy Island then home for six followed by 8 days in Llandudno or so we thought, we got a letter this morning saying our holiday had been withdrawn, so I have left it to our friends to sort something else out while we are on our first break. Our news at the moment is, we are going to be Great Grandparents, our granddaughter Becky is expecting a baby in January and everyone is over the moon. I AM TOO YOUNG TO BE A GREAT GRANNY but delighted all the same.

I'm glad you posted that entry of that day you spent at the hospital with Hannah. I think that would be a great entry to show people to get them interested in supporting cancer research. i dont think a lot of people really understand cancer, until they experience it. And that entry was very well written in showing what it's like to have a family member diagnosed with it, especially a child. Out of all the times I saw Hannah she usually just wanted to play with my hair (I don't know if you remember me but I was Chelsey's friend with the long blonde hair), or she would giggle with Chelsey, show off her matching bandana and I really would have broken down to see her playing those "doctor" games. At that age she shouldn't even have to know what an IV is. And I sometimes feel very angry when I get upset about Hannah and all that she had to go through. However I suspect Hannah was also part angel. I know she taught me a lot, as well as Chelsey. And I have shown your website (hopefully that's ok) just to show people that cancer isn't just an old persons disease.
I hope that you and your family are doing well, and I never once have forgotton about Hannah and never will... she was too cute to forget about lol

Hi Cathy & John: Sure was having a "Hannah would have loved this" moment last night. When I went down to the front lawn and saw the 6 newest kittens all cuddled up in one of my flowerboxes.....she sure loved our cat-stories, didn't she? We don't have names for this crew, just yet. It always amazed me how Hannah could remember our crazy names for the cats - like "Chrysanthemum"....and "Calamity Jane" and "Bob-cat-Bill"......It sure was a joy to share many good laughs with all of you.
I suppose you're "in training' for the "Relay for Life" walk. I'm sure your many friends will be filling out pledges for you. Hope to see you soon. Hugs from over here in Burnside (where we'll soon have a "super highway" ...well not quite...but the country gravel roads will be gone by the summer.....)

Hello Cathy and John,

I am very excited to hear that the soybeans will be planted, as you can imagine :-) I have only managed to have them everytime we eat at Earl's Place and I have the Bento Box....I need to get to the Asian market and buy myself another bag!
Yes, you are right, I often did wonder exactly how you spent your days with Hannah in the hospital, and what adventures you all went on together. Thank you so much for sharing that glimpse into a day in the life of Hannah, it made me smile and think of many of my other memories of Hannah. Purple flowers continue to remind me of Hannah, and everytime I walk into the back garden and see the hedges around the patio, I remember the time I sent the photo's of the hedges with autumn leaves, because Hannah was unable to get out at that particular time to see the fall colors. I always wondered if she thought it was funny (as in funny strange!) that someone sent her photo's of leaves and trees!
Steve took the boys on a bike ride down to the river last night, they were on the hunt for 'yellow fluffies' (goslings!). I told them to load up on bug spray, as the squeeters are out but they said it was not so bad. They only saw one baby goose, but very much enjoyed their ride. Quinn said that Callum kept cutting them off on the path....he did not want anyone to get ahead of him! :-) I hope you will soon have some more sunshine, our weather has been like summer, but we are looking to a very rainy weekend...I think we are once again going to switch weather weekly with Ontario, just as we did last summer. (although you did not get the 100 year flood, thank goodness!) I think of you often...

Hi Cathy & John,
What a lovely picture of Hannah with Cathy's dad. Just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you tonight. Hannah's little friend, Kent Reeve, is the grandson of Pat (Baker) Reeve, who was a teacher at New Dundee PS for many years. I think she taught Kathy in Kindergarten and Wendy in Grade 2. So we also have been thinking about Kent's family.

We worked several hours in the rain on Friday to spread bark chip mulch on the flower beds. A nice feeling of accomplishment. Now the flowers should really grow well. It was nice to read about your neighbour who shared her flowers with Hannah.
Hope the new job is going well, Cathy,
Hugs to you both.

Dear Cathy and John,

I was thinking of Hannah today and thought I would pop by and read all your news. I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed your trip to Texas (a friend who once lived in Texas once told me that the place she would recomment to visit was San Antonio, is it as beautiful as she said??) and also that we have a mutual appreciation for country music! My dial is always set to Country 105, even though the 'boys' try to sneak it to heavy metal (ugh!) when I am not looking :-) Congratulations, Cathy, on your new job, I am sure you will do very fine work. Well, I must say, I am sad to hear that all the soybeans are now gone, hee hee...luckily, I have managed to savor them each time I go to Earl's place for lunch :0) I am sure, however, that yours are much tastier! That is wonderful that the Jr. Farmer's raised so much money for RMH and that so many other families can benefit in the future. As always, it is wonderful to hear more "Hannah" stories, I especially love imagining her expressions as she saw the snowman all melted, and as she watched over Daddy, taking his nap :-)
Take special care, hugs,

Hi Guys

I just wanted to comment because I really felt Hannah here just now. A friend of mine's uncle passed away last night. Got me thinking about my Grandma and I was listening to a sad song crying...the song changed to a random song that happened to be You'll Be in my Heart-Phil Collins. I always considered that my song to Hannah. It was like she was trying to make me feel better.

Hi John and Cathy!

I don't remember seeing too many winter photo's of Hannah, so am very much looking forward to seeing those :-) Glad you are keeping busy and active....did you ask your Dad, John, how stiff he used to be? :-)

Today I was thrilled to meet an amazing young man, Tom Garrett, and am wondering if you know him? I am thinking you may. If not, check out his website at www.fightfortom.com and be sure to sign the petition if you have not already. Today is Tom's 18th Birthday! I was honored to take to him a gift from his BMT donor, Ron Giles....a very cool black Team Canada jersey, I believe Tom liked it very much! He is looking forward to a night out with his Dad and brother on Saturday, and then I believe he returns to Peterborough. The photopheresis treatments out here in Calgary are really helping his GVHD, please stop by his gb and say Hi and keep him in your prayers for the treatment to keep working it's magic for Tom!

Well, no sooner had I clicked to add the entry, than the phone rings and the building night is cancelled...there is so much snow!! Hi John and Cathy,

A big snowfall here in Calgary today, the best kind...packing snow! The boys and I will do some sledding, then supper and off to the school for family building night...Callum has to build his own Calgary Tower, I will take a photo of his project for you to see :-) Tomorrow, we can hopefully build a snowman. Did Hannah like to make snowmen? I know she loved her flowers and helping Daddy out in the garden :-) I remember her Mary Poppin days well, Hannah had so much fun and imagination. She left her handprint on my heart, it will be there forever.
