Dear Spencer,

Came across the blog when I'm doing some research for T-cell pediatric ALL. So glad to see that you recovered at the end of the story, you are such a strong kid. Now I'm more motivated to work harder to improve the prognosis for T-cell ALL. Best wishes to you and your family.

Spencer,

I remember when you were living at Duke and I would run around the courtyard at Maggiano's and play with you and your trucks near the fountains. I am so happy to hear that things are going well! Best wishes to you and your family and it was so wonderful to spend that time with you! You guys were always my favorite guests!

Best,

Debbie

Spencer,

While I do not know you I came across your page while visiting your dads Sideoff website. I have spent most of the afternoon reading about your journey and it has truly touched me. My daughter now two and a half years old has spent most of the first two years of her life at the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital with several disabilities, your story gives me renewed faith in the human spirit!

Just 3 weeks ago, my 8-yr-old son Kaden (he turns 9 this Sunday) was diagnosed with Early T cell precursor ALL. He's in treatment at St Jude in Memphis, TN. It was SO encouraging to find your Caring Bridge site!

Spencer,

It was a pleasure to meet you this past weekend at the San Diego Craft Fair. I was the guy who bought the card for a friend of mine who is going through cancer treatment and you signed the card. He and I have both been volunteering with LLS in their TNT cycling program for the last 15 plus years. I see you use the same site he does to keep friends posted on his progress. Here's his link: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/brucemillikin Thanks again for your time and your passion of photography.

Great meeting you.

Hello Spencer,
We bought your photo of the yellow warbler today at Art in the Park in Morro Bay. It's already hanging in our living room. Your photographs are impressive and your knowledge of and ability to identify birds is outstanding. Perhaps you will be the Audubon of the digital age. You made our day today. We hope we get a chance to see your photographs again.

Hi Spencer,
I met you today at the Morro Bay Art festival. I came just to see you and your fabulous photos. I bought the collage of flowers. You are an inspiration to all! Your strength and courage are amazing. I hope to someday be able to say when you are a famous photographer, "I bought one of his first photos, when he was just 10 years old, many, many years ago"!!!! You are an awesome kid!

I am so happy for Spencer and your family. I was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL on November 19, 2008. I had a bone marrow transplant on February 19, 2009 after induction chemotherapy was unsuccessful in achieving remission. Your story inspires me that I will still be around in 5 years. Thanks so much - I needed to see something positive in relation to T-Cell ALL.

So happy to hear that life is going well for you and is so full of adventure! I thought of you last summer when we were returning from Europe - there was a woman on our airplane transporting bone marrow from Germany to the Mayo Clinic. Hope you are having a great spring. Hi all,

Four years! Really? Whew, I'm so glad to see photos of an extraordinarily healthy and strong little boy! Is that the same kid who was so bald, sad, and in pain at Stanford right after relapse that roomed with us? What a kid! I'm so glad to hear all is well with you. It's just wonderful. Hi Caserio Clan....it has been a long time since I have checked in on you! Sounds like life has been moving along pretty normal, which of course is the best news ever! Was in your neck of the woods in July as Karleigh, our middle child is shopping colleges and had to include SLO. Her first choice is Westmont in Santa Barbara so we are keeping our prayers going! But, we thought of you all and wished I knew where you lived or had your phone number so we could have called or stopped in! Maybe our next trip! In the mean time, congrats Spencer on a clean bill of health...such fabulous news!!! You are a rock star and an amazing little spirit! Take care all....Shanon Vroman

Hi - I was researching t-Cell ALL Leukemia. My 7 year old nephew was just diagnosed with it today. My sister and her husband are in shock and I was wondering if I could talk to you more about you and your son's experience. Specifically, I'm interested to know about the unrelated umbilical cord transplant. Turns out I am pregnant and am wondering if I should save my baby's cord blood for Brian in case they need it. Would this be worthwhile even though I am a more distant relative? Thanks in advance for your help and I'm heartened to hear that your son is doing well

I don't know what exactly drew me to your guest book, but I'm glad I did. My daughter was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL way back in 1998 at the tender age of three. We live in northern california and therefore spent most (pretty much all) of her treatment at UC Davis. She had a pretty advanced case and was given the most aggressive chemo protocal available and thank God it worked. It is approaching on her 13th birthday and although the challenges of dealing with a teenager is rough I love every minute of it. Bless your family for enduring (my first marriage couldn't make it through). I am feeling very reflective and feel blessed to have the "normal" problems to deal with that at one point in my life I would have given anything for. Stay strong and relish everything! My daughter had very aggressive radiation on her brain and I was told all kinds of things we might have to deal with as far as mental retardation, etc. I am blessed to have a beautiful, talented, smart young woman in my life, and I can tell by Spencer's website you are blessed as well. Thanks for sharing your story at the point I needed it there wasn't much info from families available and I'm sure you have provided a great service. Bless You!

Wow what a spectacular trip! Loved the pictures and glad to hear that Spencer had such a great time. (Where did that lovely blond hair come from?) Too bad it was old hat for the two of you but I'm sure you still had a great time. North Shore --went there for our honeymoon. Loved that part of the island. Good to hear that Spencer is feeling good and having a great time.
Hope to talk to you soon! Just updated our site and hope to put some new pictures up soon. Wish I was better at doing it by myself...HUGS (please make a note of the new email --thanks).

Blessed Father's Day
For Fatherly Guidance

Lord God, author of all wisdom,
Teach me how to do my work as a father according to your will.
Enlighten my mind that I may understand what to tell my children when it is necessary to give them direction or advice.
Give me good judgment to understand true spiritual values and to guide my family in your ways.
The world makes little of your wisdom and is not instructed in your ways, and close contact with the world makes it easy to become dulled to the things of solid spiritual worth.
Be my guide at all times, that I may be a true father and husband, sensitive always to the divine wisdom that only you can impart.
God, by the light of the Holy Spirit you instruct the hearts of your faithful.
Grant that I may be truly wise and ever enjoy his consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Praying for you,

Hey Spencer, Long time since I've written but I do check in every so often. You look great and I can tell by your smile that you feel great too. I hope you have a great summer and that you keep your parents busy. There's a girl in my neighborhood named Katie Chapman who's at Duke right now going through what you did. I've told her about you and how AWESOME they are down there. She's at about Day 130 right now so she has a long way to go. I'm sure she'd love to hear from you if you have a chance.

As soon as your main page loaded and I saw that smile, tears came to my eyes. I remember so well when Spencer was dealing with the horrific mouthsores, trying to get into remission so you could all go to NC.

Three huge years later, that smile is like a cozy blanket on my worried heart. I just know if Spencer can kick cancer's butt like that, Hunter can too.

Sorry I missed being on time to wish Spencer a very wonderful re-birthday! Wow has it been 3 years already?!? He looks so good!! (The gal pals must think so too!) Oh and no wonder Spencer is such a good skiier (besides talent of course) --the views from the mountains are enough to inspire one to learn how to ski!! Really spectacular! Hope you all are doing well. Miss talking to you Kerri!

HAPPY 3rd RE-BIRTHDAY SPENCER! We understand our Shannon's 5th MUD BMT is this 7-30!!!

“Love...It bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.”
(1 Corinthians 13:7)

Hope you have a blessed Mother's Day!

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendoured miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

Kerri, wonderful to talk to you yesterday. When Spencer is all done with that flu - so sorry to hear it, but like you said a relief to know what it is - we'll chat more, no rush. I sent your hellos along to Melissa Fritsch and possibly to a few more people, but after about four hours in plastic chairs (no Day Hospital for us, since no IVIG), I was not too capable of smiley greetings. I will catch up with folks for you, though, I promise! Thanks for the nice notes and breacrumbs for us...we'll take 'em! Be well, kick this flu-bump and be back on the slopes - or at whatever outdoor venue you'll all enjoy together! Spencer just couldn't be cuter - wow - what a fantastic front pic on your site. Jelly beans & Jesus

Have you heard the story of the jelly beans?

Little jelly beans
Tell a story true.
A tale of our Father's love
That's just for me and you.

GREEN is for the new spring grass.
YELLOW is for the sun above.
BROWN is for the soft earth where
People sat hearing of HIS love.

PURPLE'S for the robe he wore
RED is for that precious wine.
BLACK is for the sins He washed
From your soul and mine.

BLUE'S for the sadness of
HIS friends and family,
and is for the glory of the Day
HE rose for you and me.

Now that you've heard the story
You know what each color means.
The story of our Father's love
As told by jelly beans.
So when you see jelly beans on this Easter season,
stop and remember,
Jesus is the reason!

"For God so loved the world, He gave His One and Only Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

What an absolute *joy* to read this update...I can't think of a better gift than a healthy (NORMAL) child. I was so amazed at reading how well Spencer's immune system fought off that *bug*...wow! Good going dude! I shall lift a glass to your precious son...give thanks...and pray for those still in battle. Spencer..it was also very special to hear how caring..giving..and kind your nature has become. I'm sure you shall never look at life quite the same way, and possess a quality only known by those who have been through the *fire*. God bless you all....

Howdy Rocket Boy and Caserio Clan, Greetings from the Sierras. I played my 3rd round of golf ever this week. No chance of me ever committing resources or time to this diversion. I was forced to Golf for work. There is snow in the forecast for the next 2 days. The wind blew like stink today. I hope to sail the mighty mud hole in Bishop on Thursday. I think I'm going to be too well to work and need to declare a well day. We just had the last 2 days off. I went to the dump today in Bishop to get rid of construction trash. There were big loaders and dozers moving dirt and trash in the wind. The wind won, everything went flying. What a dusty mess, only in Bishop. The fall colors are going off, the snow is coming. What are you planning for Halloween? Happy October. Be well and stay clear of kids with mumps. Thanks for sharing your updates. Aloha, Mammoth Medove's

Hi Spencer!
I'm a bank officer at RBC Centura Bank - located mainly in North Carolina but also has branch offices as far west as the Atlanta, Georgia area where my family and I live.

Your story makes me (some) sad and (mostly) glad: sad because it hurts to read of any children with difficult health problems like yours, but I am VERY HAPPY to hear of how you are doing so well now. My prayer is that God will continue to smile down on you not only with His love (which he ALWAYS does - in good and difficult/bad health) but with the blessing of continue and increasing good health.

I had to have open heart surgery when I was 16 due to having a bad heart murmur. That was almost 40 years ago when heart surgery was not nearly as good as it is today.

It's neat you like NASCAR so much and got to meet a pro driver! It reminded me of about 7-8 years ago when my family was on vacation in South Daytona Beach, Florida, and we met Sterling Marlin at the place we were staying at. He was nice enough to give us his autograph!

Take good care good buddy, and ALWAYS know that God loves you right with your Mom, Dad, and greater family!

Good to talk to you recently Kerri!
I was really sorry to hear about the fire in the truck and that you lost all that gear. Glad there wasn't damage to the truck --but I know that it's still "another thing to deal with".
On the bright side --your little guy sure is a swimmer --what great strides he has made!! (Not to mention his transplant recovery!!) Wow --jumping off the big board and then riding the waves too!! Impressive. Well, enjoy the last days of summer vacation.

Hey Bubba. Glad to hear things are going so well for you. Was there any doubt they would? (not from us, anyway). Hey I wanted you to know you were my inspiration to help my puppy beat cancer this winter. He just completed his last chemo treatment and is totally cancer free. His name is Nicoya--he's my six year old rotweiller and he's my best friend. Dr O in Cambria diagnosed him with bone cancer in January and I was told I'd have about three more months with him until the pain from the tumor became too much. Knowing a little bit about miracles and beating the odds and what putting up a good fight can do for you, I took him to the Vet Center at Cal Poly. They took tremendous care of him and hooked me up with the leading dog oncologist in the country down in Escondido. We visited him on February 14th, and the next morning he amputated Nicoya's front leg. The doc said he's got a good chance if he's a fighter, so we started him on a long list of medications and chemotherapy treatments. We've been driving back and forth to Escondido and chemo at Cal Poly and have had a ton of help from friends while I'm at the fire station. On Wednesday the doc declared him cancer free. He looks kinda funny running around on three legs but he still goes to the beach and chases rocks every day. He can run just as fast and seems very happy that he's still around. Like I said he's my best friend--he's my family. I'm not sure that if I hadn't met you and watched you fight I would have had faith in Nicoya getting better and taking this on. Thanks buddy.

Looking forward to seeing you boogy boarding at Moonstone soon.

Take care, Captain Mike

Hey Big Man: Glad you're doing so well. The Carolina Hurricanes just won the Stanley Cup. I know you're not a hockey fan yet, but you ARE a fan of Carolina, right? Anyway, we're gearing up for wildland fire season here at the station. We're gonna do some wildfire training early next month, possibly on the East West Ranch. We won't be able to light anything on fire, but we'll be stretching hose and squirting water and running around with our hands in the air screaming. I'll let your dad know when we'll be out there; it'd be great to have you come by training if you get a chance. Say hi to dad and mom for us. MG

Jelly beans & Jesus

Have you heard the story of the jelly beans?

Little jelly beans
Tell a story true.
A tale of our Father's love
That's just for me and you.

GREEN is for the new spring grass.
YELLOW is for the sun above.
BROWN is for the soft earth where
People sat hearing of HIS love.

PURPLE'S for the robe he wore
RED is for that precious wine.
BLACK is for the sins He washed
From your soul and mine.

BLUE'S for the sadness of
HIS friends and family,
and is for the glory of the Day
HE rose for you and me.

Now that you've heard the story
You know what each color means.
The story of our Father's love
As told by jelly beans.
So when you see jelly beans on this Easter season,
stop and remember,
Jesus is the reason!

"For God so loved the world, He gave His One and Only Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

John 3:16

Wishing you and yours Easter Blessing's

Hey rocketman and family so nice to read all the good news except the wean of the meds thing. You will make to that point soon I am sure of it. As of March 14th Meguire is completely medicine free except daily vitamins and calcium but guess what spencer Meguire had to get new glasses and he picked blue storm power ranger glasses although he don't like wearing them he needs them I am trying to get his daddy to take some pictures to post them on his website but, he does have a picture on there of his new bike and helmet courtesy of cody's wheels of hope. So go and check it out. Have a wonderful month and so glad to see how well you are doing I check in on you often just because you have a special little place in my heart because meguire looked just like you after his transplant and that was so amazing to me. THE JELLY BEAN PRAYER

Red is for the blood He gave.
Yellow is for His son so bright.
Black is for the sins we made.
Purple is for His hours of sorrow.
Green is for the grass He made.
Orange is for the moon at night.
White is for the grace He gave.
Pink is for our new tomorrow.

A bag full of jellybeans,
Colorful & sweet,
Is a prayer, Is a promise, Is a small treat.
Remember Jesus when you eat the jellybeans.

And Spencer I hope you don't mind that someone in NH has been following your story - you are a very brave, unbelieveably strong young man, that has taught myself and my family so much! My name is Amy Brown, my nephew Corey was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL on September 23, 2005. In a very late night (tear-filled) search session on the internet, trying to learn all I could, I found Spencer's story through the Side-Off site. Through which I then found the link to Caring Bridge. What a find! My nephew (who was 15 at the time)has a lot of friends and family to keep updated and receive support from, and without finding this, I am not sure what we would have done. Your education and description about ALL really taught me everything I needed to know to face the past 4 months (and beyond). Not to mention how uplifting it has been to see Spencer's smile. I just want you to know what a difference Mom & Dad and Spencer's smile have made for someone you don't know, and please accept a heartful Thank you again. Corey's site is http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/coreymcg if you should want to check it out. He is simply amazing as well, and doing wonderful! He is down to receiving one day doses of chemo. every 3-weeks (for the next 2 years) and will be going in for radiation treatment in March for 10 days. I must warn you that some of the wording on the site describing T-Cell ALL you might find sounds familiar :). Thank you so very much again and I do hope you don't mind me staying updated through Spencer's site. Oh and to close...what happened to your house while you were gone is unimagineable (sp?). I am glad to hear that they nabbed some of "bad guys" (rated G version), and I do hope you receive some of your precious goods back once the case is closed. Spencer - Thank you for teaching me so much, and keep having fun in school - I can see a medical doctor on the rise :) -Amy Brown & Family Farmington, NH

Hey Spencer, Kerri & Brian,
What a great update! Spencer looks awesome! I can't believe the bit about the i.d. because I just came across Jared's the other day in a duffle bag. It had been missing without me knowing, too. Thank goodness there is some justice after that whole ordeal. You will have to read our update after the 29th to hear how Jared's special outing went. We are going to the Hard rock hotel and the Tony Hawk show next weekend. There is a special surprise for Jared that I will write about. Things continue to move forward and we are always thinking of you guys and are so proud for Spencer's recovery. Jared pushes hard each day for it, too. God bless you guys and keep in touch!
Love,
Lynn, Don & Jared

Hi Spencer: Great ski picture--you look absolutely "smashing" in your new outfit!!! I can't wait to take a few runs with you in Tahoe in March--jut promise you won't leave me in the dust as you zoom down the mountain.
Hope all went well at Stanford yesterday.
We are having a good time in Scottsdale--tho it is more fun to play golf than hang around Mayo Clinic. The Marathon was great--lots of people out there running for the "cure".
See you in about 10 days.
Love & hugs to all.

It is so wonderful to see how well Spencer is doing!! We don't seem to have matching LPCH dates currently. Although, as you said, we really ought to do something non-hospital related. Hope the cyclosporine and hydrocortisone weans go well...

Hi Spencer - Guess you're on you way to "ski bum" status! Glad you have a lot of energy to fight the cold. Hope Mom feels better soon too. As for your Duke badge, they will make you a new one the next time you're there. Alex wanted a new one the last time we were there because he had hair :-) Just be sure to ask someone from Family Support. Hope you have a good check-up at Stanford and get some more ski time. Hugs,

I just came across your website. My 1 year old daughter had a BMT in July for Hurler syndrome. Her 4 year old brother was her donor. She is doing great now and we are home with every other week ckeck ups. It sounds like you all are doing fantastic. Best of luck to you all!
