Journal

Sunday, January 29, 2006

It has been over a year since I have updated this journal. Seems as if today is a good day to bring you up to speed on our little guy -- as today is his 2nd birthday!

The biggest and most remarkable update is that Dylan started walking in Fall 2005. Despite the odds, Dylan amazed everyone on his team when he started pushing a push toy around the back yard. It didn't take long for him to start walking independently. Dylan continues to attend weekly physical therapy sessions, which has played an essential role in his development. I remember the day when Dylan stood on his two feet for all of three-seconds for the very first time -- his therapist and I were ecstatic! It certainly took a lot of little baby steps to get to walking.

Congnitively, Dylan is excelling. He loves his train table and is a big fan of Thomas the Tank Engine. Dylan can have a conversation with you now, too. He'll tell you when he's hungry, what he wants to eat, what he wants to wear, etc. In fact, he learned to count to 10 in Spanish before English. Dylan and Sasha attend a weekly Spanish class that they just love.

Dylan and Sasha are wonderful playmates now. Big sister Sasha loves to "read" to Dylan and play "tea party" together. Dylan adores his sister and seems to be her little shadow. He can hold his own, though, and if he is upset, you will know!

On the medical front, Dylan recently started seeing gastroenterology. This has been a very difficult area of treatment for Dylan and we are still trying to figure out the best combination of medications to help him out. It is a complicated issue that I won't go into here -- but please pray that he improves in this area.

Dylan continues to wear ankle-foot-orthotics (AFOs) and those seem to be working out pretty well for him. These are the only source of support/help he has -- otherwise, he is walking independently (without a cane or walker).

And, of course, visits to oncology remain part of our life. Just last week, Dylan went in to get lab work done in preparation for his exam with oncology this week. When we got to the phlebotomy, Dylan screamed "No! No! No, mama!" He remembers that's where he gets poked for blood draws.

Dylan had a great Thomas the Tank Engine birthday brunch today. And we took the kids up to Tahoe to see snow for the first time. It was a wonderful way to celebrate Dylan's special time.

Thanks for checking in.
