Hey, great news! Glad you had a fun birthday, Alex and are feeling good! We're sick of snow here, too, but haven't had it as bad as you. On the bright side, I see some green shoots coming up out of the ground! It's Spring!!!! We survived!!!!

Hi Alex,
Sounds like you had a nice birthday! Hey where are the pictures of you shoveling the big snowfall?! I hope that Spring is around the corner for all of us. We didn't have a lot of snow then we got quite a bit in February. I think it's high time for a "big melt". Talk to you soon!!

Happy Birthday Alex. I can't believe you are 14!!!! All that snow has been fun, but enough is enough. We lucked out so that the first time they closed school it was Wed. and Thurs. of the president's weekend so we got a "spring break" week and then this time it was Thurs. and Fri. Our Boy Scouts could be in big trouble if we have another snow day since that would extend school into the week they are at camp. Oh well not much we can do.
Happy Birthday again.
Love, Lynne

Big Hugs to you guys. We'll have to plan a time to get together. I have soooo many friends that live up that way, it would be silly not to just meet for a minute to say "hi". We'll see when we can say "hi". I'm doing OK. Will let you know when. Or tell me when you have a bit of "free time". I know--what is that? Haha. Take care and hopefully we can at least say hello. Take care.

Jill, unfortunately the statistics don't say it all. Our elementary school had 5 kids, in a school of 450, who were survivors and another family with an older sibling. It is hard to grasp how many kids are diagnosed. We did not get it until we started to have friends, from pre-cancer days in our house, whose children were also diagnosed with a cancer.
I am so glad to hear that Alex is doing well. We will root for him that he can be a stamper next year, what a great term. Good luck with germville, I am feeling that way this year too.

Boy the kids are really keeping you moving with their various schedules. Hope you have had some time for yourself while they have been gone. When does school start for them? They are already back in school here in Colorado. Are you ready for this one, Josiah started Kindergarten on Monday - then promptly got sick on Tuesday.

Emily - next time remember the bug spray, especially around the exposed areas of skin. My favorite is Avon's Expedition bug spray from the skin so soft line. It works in Asheville.

Congratulations Alex - you were a star at your Bar Mitzvah! It was impressive to see you all grown-up and so well spoken on Saturday, then having fun at your kid party on Sunday. It was great to finally meet Emily, although with the fantastic job your mom does with this website. we felt we knew her already. Thanks to Jill, Steve, and your whole family for a fabulous weekend! I'm sorry to hear about the latest rough spots for Alex. Remember that we are all pulling for you every day and that includes a lot more people than those who sign this book. Sometimes we can't avoid the potholes in the road and we just hope we didn't break an axle. Listen to me - I'm making life sound like a road trip. Anyway, I'm sure we all know people who need an oil change. Oops - I did it again. I hope you have a happy Passover and don't eat too much matzo (unless it's matzo brei).

Hi, Alex!

I love stopping by to read how well you are doing. I know there are bumps in the road, but the road is also filled with joy and love and birthday parties, and that's very exciting.

I'm sure you don't remember me as I was most likely a name attached to a present...a faceless stranger. But several years ago, I was your holiday ChemoAngel. I sent you and your sister eight days of Chanukah gifts (with far too much candy, I'm sure). I think of you often and am so glad I found your CB site so I can check in.

Keep on keepin' on, Alex. You are a winner!!

Hello Schwab family,
We met you in August during or Believe In Tomorrow vacation in Ocean City. We were the family that got "stood up" by the golf pro with you guys at the country club and our daughters decided to tango throughout the lobby (lol). Anyway, I found Alex's site through the faces and stories site and have followed you all intermittently. Imagine my surprise when I opened the Wisp House journal and saw that your family had been there just a few weeks before us! It sounds like you guys had an amazing time there and took full advantage of all that was offered. Our stay was too short and although it was cold, we got a lot more ice than we did snow. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and wish you Happy Holidays and a healthy New Year. Maybe our paths will cross again....

Hi, Jill:
My name is Sue and Alex and Emily were my holiday special assignment several years ago through the ChemoAngels program. I have thought about Alex and your family many times over the years and have wondered how he was doing (I believe you lived in California when I got the assignment). Imagine my surprise to find you on Khalita's guest book!!!!

It was so good to read through some of the history and to see the wonderful photos of Alex and Emily. They are sooooooo big--growing up beautifully. I know that Alex had GVH after the transplant, and I am so thrilled to see that despite all the medical issues that caused, he is doing well, looking very happy, and living and loving life!

God is so good! May He continue to bless you all for many years to come.

I was stunned, I can not believe it has been 6 years!!! I remember Dan coming home and telling me that Neil had a nephew with ALL, but I had no idea it was so long ago. Just for the record you are all heros to me, you got through this and are all still together and you are all "new normal". When Claire finished treatment the doctor told us we could go back to being a normal family, I just laughed and told her we were not normal before cancer and we were not going to start now. Enjoy the rest of the fall winter will soon be here. If you go to the Candlelighters christmas tree lighting in D.C. go when Woody is playing, he is a long time friend of Claire's (he plays for all the kids in the hospitals in PA), If you get a chance to see him and talk to him make sure to tell him you know Claire, it will get a big laugh. Must run the bus will be here soon. Love, Lynne

I have one word for you, Metro. The metro is great. I would not drive in D.C. on a bet. I did right after 9/11 but I had an expedition and everyone got out of my way. So glad that the kids had fun trick or treating. We have a rule in this house, it is "candy tax" Dad must check all the candy to see if it is "safe" and then he charges the tax, usually 1/3 of all the peanut butter cups. Only dad could get away with that. Take care Love, Lynne

It's been a looonngg time since I've checked in. What challenges you've been facing! Sounds like your move will be good for Alex's health care. I certainly hope he doesn't have to access it so often in the future!

We think Leticia has stopped growing at 5'2". She's quite disappointed and wants Growth Hormone shots, but doesn't need them! Aside from weird allergies, sinus and eye infections, lots of colds, ongoing dental issues, and a little skin GvHD - she's doing well. Struggling in school - finished off the year with mostly Cs, except a B+ in Physics! Go figure! Thrilled she won't have to attend summer school as a couple non-special ed friends will. Wants to get her drivers permit this summer - GASP!! We have a stick shift car, but that doesn't seem to be deterring her.

Do wish the best for all of you, and we're saying special prayers for Alex.

You guys are amazing!!!! I think I would have just sat down in the halls and cried or screamed in frustration if I had been forced to have a day like that at clinic. What a trooper Alex is!!!! Have a wonderful visit with all your company and enjoy summer vacation. Claire is doing just that- she got up at 9:30 and had breakfast and then went up to her room (I thought to get dressed) and she has been asleep since 9:45, it is now after 11:30. Wish I could sleep like that. We wish you no more craziness this summer. Love, Lynne

The weather this year has been very unusual. We have been getting tornado warnings in the Colorado Springs area also.

Hope you got the roof fixed or at least temporarily patched. It is a pain to try and get workman out when everyone else needs them also.

Did you say you were running a B&B yet? We are looking forward to our visit and catching up.

Hope Alex feels better and gives his cough the axe.

Welcome to the east coast. Funny you should mention how bad the storm seemed because down south, where I lived as a child they are even worse!!! You will find that after a few years you will get used to it and know when to panic and when to sit and watch because in all their fury they are beautiful displays of nature. So glad everyone is safe. Love, Lynne

Alex: please figure out how many birthdays I missed so I can send you a check for the missing gifts. I need to get myself organized. Hi, Jill and Alex! I saw your post on the GVHD board. My 3 yr old son David and I were at NIH last week. We flew from California. David has skin GVHD. The dermotologist was very good. Thank you for helping research! I hope your visits go well. The cafe near the patient/family entrance has great coffee and pastries. I was not impressed with the cafeteria, however, I did like the fruit and salad bar. The panini sandwiches were terrible.

Hi Jill,

Sorry about the tooth, and happy birthday! Great news that Alex doesn't have to go back for a month (and yes, no news is always good for a cancer parent). By the way, I secretly chuckle when husbands get a taste of the hospital run around...mine can't handle the run around and the horrible w-a-i-t-i-n-g for everything.

Hope to see you soon. :o)

I am glad to read that you guys are gonna get to NIH for that study. That should be a 'good' experience, well at least thorough. Thats an interesting campus. When you drive in they check your car out and even looked under the car with mirrors! I hope to meet you guys soon in the warmer weather. I have no experience with Thalomide but I have now been prescribed Solarace. Good luck Alex and I hope your skin gets better soon!

Happy Birthday buddy!! I've been thinking of and praying for you all day and just wanted to stop by to say hello. I think anyone who has a birthday that only "really" comes once every 4 years should have a HUGE celebration and that's exactly what I hope you have. Hang in there and take care. I won't be at clinic on the 4th. My appointment is on the 11th for all the "usuals", but since you live closer now, it'll be easier to see you more often, so I look forward to that. Take care and keep celebrating life. I love you guys!

Hi Alex! Happy 12th Birthday to YOU!!

Just wanted to drop by and say hello and let you know that we're thinking of you on your special day! Did you know that I've read that every 1 in 1,461 people is a leap year baby. I've also read that some people refer to themselves as "Leapers", "29ers", "Leaplings", and "Leapies" and they use the frog as their common symbol. Have you ever heard that? There's even a website for people who have their birthday on the 29th! (In case you're interested, it is called "The Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies".) Anyway, hope it's a very happy day for you!

I just noticed a post on Nancy's Matthew's CB site where your name now has Vienna, Virginia in the details, so I came over to read about your move. We live in Maryland, and I work very near to Georgetown Hospital. I remember Alex well from the ALL Kids list. I had to laugh about how crazy the schools are about delays and canceling . . . I'm sure your kids are home today in all this (not really) freezing rain.

Anyway, welcome to the area, and I hope you're feeling more at home every day. If we can be of any help, let us know! I don't post much since Clare died, but we're still hanging on in the cyber cancer community.
