It is wonderful to hear how great Jessica and the whole family is! I too pray that 2010 will be ordinary because ordinary is GOOD! Thank you for posting the progress of Jessie and for your amazing Christmas letter. Remember, if you are ever down in the San Diego area, please let me know! After housing all our toys etc. over 8 years ago in your garage while we moved back here, we will always be grateful!! God Bless you all.

Dear Jo and Graham, Thanks for your card and the correct caringbridge web address, which has obviously worked this time. I have no idea what I have been doing wrong the last two years but I have now bookmarked it so hopefully I won't get lost in cyberspace looking for you again. It is great to see Ben and Jessie looking so well. Sorry about Jo's swineflu. I get into schools a lot and so far I have managed to avoid it but it can only be a matter of time before I catch it. I am delighted to hear about the music teaching, though, and I shall tell David Daniels about it next time I am in touch with him. He will be pleased too! Looking back through your entries I was glad to pick up a bit of news about Netta but sorry to hear Anne is not as mobile as she would like to be. My best wishes to them both when you are in contact, and of course to you all in California for 2010. Finally, thanks for the invitation to visit, don't think this is likely in the immediate future but I would like to get to San Francisco one day. If you hear of any need for an expert in school self-evaluation skills out there I would be happy to come and provide consultancy in the sunshine!

Hi Graeme and Joanna Just read the update today and am sorry to read that things are not as clearcut as we would all like. There isn't much that does seem to be clearcut about Jess's situation at all, sadly. It would be really fantastic to see you this summer. Love to you all; hope Spring Break has gone well. John was in your neck of the woods so I took the kids to Centreparks with a friend and her children. Tom was clutching the front of my swimsuit on the rapids and all was going well until I heard a man say 'nice buoyancy aids'and I glanced down to see that my 'buoyancy aids' had made a bid for freedom. The humiliation!!

Sorry we'll miss you at Liver Clinic today. Josh will be there the 17th. Great news on the scan! We'll keep praying and sending our best wishes. Hope Jessica can taper off quickly on the prednisone. Josh was a completely different child on it: insomnia, poor listening, hitting, the works! Also, I found that the drug side effects can last 1-2 weeks after taking it. All the best with tapering off.

Thanks for the update Jo. What a worry about your mother, and devastating news. She must be mentally so, so strong to deal with this. Ah, so that's where you get it from of course xxx I hope Monday brings encouraging news for her.

But poor old Jess and her cast. Great to hear she's mobile but I'm sure you're all desperate to be rid of it! That plus a 5 hour hospital stint isn't what the Easter Bunny should bring.

Hello my love. ONe day at a time, one issue at a time...but I know those are easy words. I know you must be immensly worried behind that tense smile, such a lot to take on and all the fears for the future. I do hope your mother will be out of hospital soon, and on her way home - one less thing to worry about for you although I realise that is rather a selfish attitude of mine! Your poor mum, 11 weeks - what a long haul it's been.

Hoping to hear encouraging news soon. Hugs to you all.

Joanna, Josh re-started on Prograf 2 months after this last chemo. Nine months after that, we tried weaning him off but he rejected 2 weeks later. He's now on a very low dose of Sirolimus which has kept his EBV numbers in check (less than 200 copies 9 out of the last 12 months) and is working really well as his only anti-rejection med. I wish you all the best. We are thinking of you a lot and hoping for the best always.

Dear Jo,
Can't believe this on top of everything else, but you mustn't blame yourself about Jess's ankle because these things happen with kids. It must feel like the last straw, though. I think of you all so much, and read your updates about Jess and your parents regularly. Your poor mum is going through such an awful time but you are a huge support to her. Am sending you lots of love and positive vibes as always, Kate xxxxxxx

Join the club of parents who let their children trampolines so they could break a bone! I took the boys to a farm where they have samples of climbng frames, trampolines with no nets, etc and heard Alistair shout, "This one's really bouncy!" and a few minutes later heard a horrible screach as he bounced right off and, as it turned out later, had broken his right arm - on first Friday of the 6-week summer hols! I can still feel guilty when remembering it. Does President's (or should that be Presidents'??) Day mean that Graham will be at home? With love as ever, Katharine

Oh no, it's so unbelievable that it's almost funny....but, of course, it's not funny at all. I just can't believe how things just seem to get worse and worse for you all. Broken bones and pox exposure are all normal parts of childhood, but the timing is deeply unlucky. And the added hassle and stress of the car is also a right pain.

Hmmm. Here's to an improving week for you all!

THanks for finding time to update us all Jo, I've been checking anxiously for news. Your daughter and your mother amaze me with their strength and grace. What a pain re the pox, endless outbreaks around here at the moment too but of course quite usual as no vaccine here. And the insurance stress must be ghastly.

I'm still stunned that I'm checking here for updates on Jessica PLUS your mum & dad. Lots of positive news, but plenty still going on to worsen those sleepless nights by the sounds of it. So pleased your Dad is clearly on the mend, and that your Mum is as brave and stubborn as an ox! And jessica CLEARLY needs a special badge for all medical personnel which says, 'Look...I'm a superstar....don't tiptoe around me just get on with it, I'll be fine because I always am.' Shall I make one?

Seriously, I'm pleased you get a double check on the radiation because it sounds like you need the reassurance.

Joanna, Josh's PTLD was also only in his neck and abdomen. He had non-Hodgkin's, that they referred to as Burkitt's-like, but definitely a more aggressive form of PTLD. Since Josh had his first blood transfusion at birth, I didn't think twice about it during chemo. He had 11 transfusions (with hemoglobin at 6.7 at times). So far, no negative side effects from it (as far as we know) and it's been 2-1/2 years. I'm not sure if that's reassuring at all. But, if you can find designated donors, that would be best. Your current journey reminds me so much of our own. I do hope that you get the silver lining Marcia had once mentioned to me, that Jessica is able to get off Prograf for good after this. For Josh, it was not to be. He is on Rapamune/Sirolimus now and doing well on a very low dose. Wishing you the best always,
Angeli

Dear Joanna

Jessica and your family are daily in my thoughts. I remember when Ben was born and also when Jessica arrived. I have watched them grow from afar through pictures and anecdotes and care for both of them very very much.

I hope 2008 will be easier for all of you.

With all my love

Dearest Jo,

If only I could just give you a big cuddle, but I do want you to know that you and your lovely family are daily in my thoughts and prayers, especially at the moment when things are particularly hard. You obviously have wonderful, kind friends around you, who want to help and support you in many different ways. And you have many others who want to send their support via this website. The reason you have so many friends, Jo, is because you are a kind, warm, generous person and such a super friend to them. Rely on friends as much as you can, Jo - you are not alone in all this - and I'm sure that having your parents there will be a great blessing too. I send my love to you, and am rooting for you all and for Jess as ever. Love from Kate xxxxxxxx

I'm sorry this has been such a bad week.
I just wanted to say that Tanner had a PICC instead of a Power PICC and the CT tech would always push the dye by hand. It's worth asking about.
We gave Tanner glutamine throughout treatment and it greatly helped reduce the mouth sores.
Hugs,

Joanna My tears are no help to you. Gregory and I go to a local toddler group which is attached to a church as they often are - this one is attached to The Vineyard Church. They have envelopes for prayer requests. I completed one for Jessica and one for you. At least that is something more than tears. Next time I'll simply complete one for the Allan and Read family (I don't think they'll refuse it on the basis of name differences - at least they'd better not).

I can't imagine what you are all having to go through, and I just wish I was nearby to give you practical help as well as all my prayers. Jess's remark about her hair is just one example of how incredibly brave and positive she is in the face of so much, and what a credit she is to you both. What a beautiful photo of her on the website. You are doing a wonderful job supporting her through it, and helping make all the dreadful medicines and hospital visits more bearable. I was delighted to hear that she'd scored a goal despite everything - amazing! I will be thinking of you all so much in the next few weeks, and sending as many positive, healing vibes across the miles as I can muster. Look after yourself too, Jo, as much as you can. Ps/ PICC vs broviac.. I would NOT do PICC but maybe a port that way she can swim and bathe and have the best quality with out the IV sticking out of her skin. Aiden had Broviac for 16 months and it was great, but for a 5 year old I would think possibly a port.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

May the Grass be soft as heather
as it sways beneath your feet
May smiles so bright and so cheerful
light up every face that you meet...

May your heart be ever hopeful,
and filled with glad songs to be sung,
And may the years always be kindly
to keep you forever young!

May the Luck of the Irish be with you...always, forever and a day!

Glad to hear things are going well - mostly , at least. I received a parcel from the US today - the one I sent for Jess and Ben in mid-July!! I'll need to check your address before I know whether to blame the US postal system or put my own hand up to a mistaken address. But am annoyed that you never received what was supposed to divert the 2 kids for even just a little while: sorry about that. I'll re-address and re-post it and maybe it will do as a birthday present for Jess instead.

TAKE IT EASY Graham!!

Hello dear friends (and neighbors).
It has been a while since I checked the website and I'm glad that I was able to read a lot of good news. Every morning after meditation Jessica's face jumps into my mind and I send her my prayers. Intuitively, I knew she was doing fine but I also wanted to see it in writing and I told myself that I would check the website when I got to work, so today I finally did. I hope to see you again soon, perhaps by chance, when we bike to Rancho San Antonio park. Our continued prayers and thoughts are with Jessica and the entire family.

So glad to hear that things have been going well for Jess and Graham over the past couple of weeks and that family life is resuming into a routine again. Can't believe Ben is going into first grade already; I remember so clearly visiting you the week he was born! It was good to read your most recent update and, barring your poor, painful tooth, I'm so glad to hear that everyone is doing so well. I was very sorry to hear about Jess being in such pain that night, but since then it seems as though her improvement continues to be really positive. Hello to you all

We have just recently returned from an extended holiday in Australia and have been bringing ourselves up to date through your journal. You are all amazing the way you are coping with the highs and lows since the transplant and you Jo must be finding it so difficult as you cannot split yourself three ways which I'm sure is what you really wish you could do. Graham, whilst I'm sure every parent would always do whatever they could for their children, other than everyday caring and support, not many of us are called on further. For you to do what you have for Jessica is so completely selfless and I so hope your recovery is as swift as it can be. As for Ben, from what you write, he is being so grown up about everything and he is a credit you and as for Jessica herself, it is unbelievable what she is having to go through and she is so brave. I know nothing can be rushed but we will keep absolutely everything crossed hoping for continued good news. Jo, take good care of yourself as they all need you. I know there is nothing tangible we can do from here but all our thoughts and hopes are with the four of you.
All our love

Dear Joanna,

We are so sorry things have been so rough for Jessica! We have to believe that once the right combination of immunosuppressants is found she will get over this rejection episode and start to enjoy the gift of the healthy liver from Graham. We can't imagine how difficult this is for you and your family. You are the best mother Jessica could ever have and your strength and love are going to get her through this. You are all in our prayers.
Love, Melinda, Mike, Daniel and Andrew

Dear Joanna,
Graham and Jessie are so lucky to have you managing their recovery! Hopefully this new treatment routine works well with minimal discomfort for Jessie! We are thinking of you guys often and praying that you can persevere through this latest turn. (Max mentions Jessie and her daddy in his prayers every night- without our prompting.) Thanks for keeping us posted on Jessie's and Graham's progress. It must be hard finding the energy to write these summaries- you are amazing. Hang in there!

Have been thinking about your for some time. My Ben also wants to send his best wishes. This weekend my dad gave me a piggy bank that I had made for my mom (now deceased) in grade school. It weighed 35#, filled mostly with pennies. We took it to Safeway to cash in the contents and I told Ben this would be the seed money for his allowance fund. I told him that we would divide it into three pots- one for spending, one for saving and one for sharing. He volunteered that the shared amount could be donated to Ben Allen's sister to help pay for her medicines. If you need pennies or anything else, please do not hesitate to ask.

To you all,

I was so relieved to hear that the surgery had gone as well as it could, and that Jessica and Graham are starting their recovery, but very upset to hear about Jessica's problems at night. It must be very upsetting for you. Jo, I send you my very best love as you take care of your family. Please look after yourself as much as is possible. Karen and I will both be thinking of you such a lot this week when I visit her in Gateshead. Doesn't Jessica look radiant in her photo on this website, and so like you?

Sending you all my love, and a huge warm hug each for you, Jessica, Graham and Ben.

We're thinking positive thoughts when it's daytime here, so hopefully that will help through the long, dark nights there. If it's any consolation at all I know people, including Dad, have hallucinated in ITU (as I'm sure you have) and the effects weren't long-lasting. Am very relieved to read today's news. Well done, Graham!! Is Jessica allowed hugs yet? Am pleased to hear, presumably, that no blood transfusion needed. Graham's kidney is obviously top quality, so Jess is in an excellent position to move forward. Hope she starts to feel a bit better and can move off some of the drugs soon. I am so pleased to read your message. As I was walking back from school today, out time 9.15am, I was wondering what was happening. It would have been the middle of the night and I was wondering if you, Joanna, were awake or asleep, or which member of your family in hospital you were with. I had to wait while Dad had a life-saving op, and then see him in ITU afterwards; and the scale of what you're experiencing is much greater so I can only imagine what it's like. A small package is on its way, I've been trying to think of something sendable to distract Graham and if I get any bright ideas I'll send it too. I know your parents will be looking after you. Please try and look after yourself. We'll be waiting for any news.Of course, we send all the love we can. As ever, we wish we were there.

Lots of Love Katharine, Jonathan, Alistair and Elliot
