Janice Aune Chair

Janice Aune is past chair and CEO of Onvoy Inc., a Minnesota headquartered technology leader and telecommunications innovator. Upon joining Onvoy in September 2000, Aune led the company to a position of financial stability and growth. Under her leadership, Onvoy refocused its market emphasis to serve strategic enterprise, independent telecommunications and carrier markets with the goal of creating a market leader position in the development and delivery of IP-centric services. Janice left Onvoy in November 2007 upon the successful completion of the acquisition of Onvoy by Zayo, a venture-capital backed broadband company.

Prior to joining Onvoy, Janice served in numerous executive leadership positions at U.S. West (now Qwest) and ended her 30-year career there as a senior executive officer and president of the INTERPRISE division, the technology and innovations arm of U.S. West. There she was responsible for a $3 billion product portfolio.

Her past board of director experiences include: Minnesota High Technology Association, the Women's Healthcare Trust, Minnesota Telephone Association, the Capital City Partnership, RLX Technologies, Onvoy Inc., and AeA. In addition, Janice held an appointed seat on the Technology Enterprise Board, a public-private board that advised state government officials on technology from 2001 to 2004.

Beth Monsrud Vice Chair

Beth Monsrud has more than 20 years of experience in the financial management field. She joined UCare in 2001 as controller, and was named senior vice president and CFO in 2008. She provides executive leadership and oversight for all fiscal operations and is responsible for the strategic direction for UCare’s accounting, budgeting, forecasting, product pricing enrollment and reporting as well as information systems, among other key financial functions.

In 2009 she was recognized by the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal as a “Woman to Watch” and received the Women’s Health Leadership Trust’s Mid Career Award.

Cheryl Newell Treasurer

Cheryl owns Money$marts, LLC, teaching Essentials of Personal Finance for Young Adults. Her work in the corporate world with budgets, cash flow, debt and risk management, coupled with her training and development experience, gives her a unique background for teaching others about financial literacy. She also does consulting work for small businesses on financial and cash flow matters through Newell Consulting LLC.

Cheryl is a results and process oriented Business and Financial Executive with proven comprehensive business and financial skills. Her 35-year career includes retail, health care technology and consulting, mortgage banking, medical devices, manufacturing, and banking/investment banking companies, spanning Fortune 100 to entrepreneurial private companies.

As a trusted business advisor to CEOs, relying on her background as CFO, she has extensive experience in finance and IT, including taking two companies public (Paper Warehouse, k.n.a Party City and ev3, k.n.a Covidien), integrating extensive business process redesign at SuperValu, as well as acquisitions and mergers at Ingenix, k.n.a Optum Health, and US Bank. Cheryl divested a division at Paper Warehouse to raise needed cash, lead the implementation of major financial software-a global general ledger-for GMAC, k.n.a. Ally Bank, and implemented cross border cash systems at ev3. Cheryl’s banking career includes US Bancorp, Citigroup and Wells Fargo Bank. She was responsible for complex leveraged recapitalizations, acquisitions, international transactions, turnarounds, and treasury management.

Leigh Bailey Secretary

Leigh Bailey is the founder and CEO of The Bailey Group, a leadership development firm which consults with executive level leaders and leadership teams. Through executive coaching, team building, strategic planning and consulting, Leigh and his team have helped hundreds of leaders and teams reach their highest potential and achieve their business outcomes since 1989. His industry experience includes banking, financial services, insurance, advertising and marketing, healthcare, medical technology, law firms and distribution services.

Leigh sharpened his skills as a business leader in the financial services industry in various leadership and consulting roles. As an executive coach and consultant, Leigh has become an expert at facilitating coaching processes that sustain long-term behavior change in individuals and organizations. He earned his master's degree in human development from St. Mary's University. He has served as an instructor and advisor in the Masters of Human Development Program at St. Mary's University. He is the co-author of Grown-Up Leadership: The Benefits of Personal Growth for You and Your Team and author of its corresponding workbook Taking Charge of Your Career.

Alan Abramson

Alan is the senior vice president of information services and chief information officer at HealthPartners, a family of nonprofit Minnesota healthcare organizations focused on improving the health of its members, its patients and the community.

Alan graduated cum laude from Wheaton College in Illinois, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in computer applications and decision science.

Alan has served as an advisor or board member to numerous regional and national organizations for healthcare systems innovation and improvement. He co-chairs the Minnesota e-Health Initiative Advisory Committee, is a board member of the University of St. Thomas Graduate School in Business, is past board president of the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest and serves as the chair for the Managed Care Executive Group, a national organization that provides a forum for the open exchange of information, innovative ideas and experience among CIOs and senior health plan leaders.

Karen Hohertz-Jacobs

Karen Hohertz-Jacobs is a consultant with Trexin and is currently working at Regis Corporation. Prior to this she spent over 25 years in various leadership roles with Best Buy and the Geek Squad where she had responsibility for many components of operations including store systems, training, process design and field leadership support. She brings deep experience in utilizing user insights, system design and capability support models. Karen graduated with a BA in Business and a concentration in Marketing from Webster University in 1992.

Karen first encountered CaringBridge as a site author in 2007 when her infant daughter was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma. She has a passion for giving back to the organizations that she leaned on during her daughter's treatment and ultimate recovery.

Lawrence J. Massa

Lawrence (Lorry) Massa became president and CEO of the Minnesota Hospital Association in October 2008, continuing a 25-year career as a hospital and healthcare leader in the Upper Midwest. The Minnesota Hospital Association represents Minnesota’s 143 hospitals and health systems, providing advocacy, education and numerous other services to its members.

Serving as a policy-maker, hospital executive and grassroots advocate, he previously led Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minn. There he acted as CEO of the municipal organization for almost 15 years. Prior to that, Lorry gained more than 10 years of for-profit and nonprofit healthcare executive experience in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Lorry has served on numerous non-profit boards throughout his career. In addition to CaringBridge, Lorry currently serves on the board of the March of Dimes, Minnesota chapter. Lorry and his wife live in the northern Twin Cities suburbs and enjoy spending time with their three children and two grandchildren, all living in the Twin Cities area.

Bill McKinney

Bill McKinney is Vice-president of Talent and Strategic Development at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, an $80 billion fraternal benefit society that offers financial products and services to over 2 million members throughout the U.S. In his role as a member of the Senior Leadership Team for this not-for-profit firm, Bill has led groups responsible for distribution strategy, financial associate recruiting and training, mass market strategy, new business development, marketing research and analytics, business intelligence and, most recently, talent and change management.

In his 10 years with Thrivent, Bill has spearheaded a multitude of initiatives, from creating innovative financial education programs to redesigning the firm's grass-roots volunteer system that raises tens of millions of dollars to support local charitable causes.

Bill earned his B.A. in history from Minnesota's Carleton College and his MBA from the University of Minnesota. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Amy, and their three children.

Mikisha Nation

Mikisha Nation currently holds the Senior Business Partner of Healthcare Corporate Security position at Target Corporation and formerly held their Senior Benefits Business Partner in Wellbeing & Human Resources position for four years. Mikisha utilizes her diversified background of work in business, healthcare, government, nonprofits, and academic institutions to encourage engagement and inspiration through cross-functional collaboration resulting in optimal results.

With her all-encompassing experience in Program Management and Project Leadership, Mikisha has previously worked in various areas including consultation for multiple organizations, a director role at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and the position of Public Health Advisor/Senior Project Officer with the US Department of Health and Human Services throughout the country.

Mikisha currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Scott Petinga

As Chairman and CEO of The Scott Petinga Group, Scott Petinga is a pioneer in developing businesses with lasting impact in the fields of communications, sustainable real estate, a business accelerator, and philanthropy.

After serving in the military and in roles as varied as Vice President of Segmentation Management at Santander Bank and Adjunct Professor at several regional colleges, Scott put his brilliant marketing skills to work. He served in several senior executive roles at advertising agencies, including Accountability Director at Carmichael Lynch and Strategic Planning Director at RMG Connect – JWT, before leaving Madison Avenue in 2007 to launch his flagship company, the data-driven communications agency AKQURACY. Founded on the strength of a single client relationship, Scott has since grown the company into a multi-million dollar marketing endeavor.

In the last 2 years, AKQURACY earned a spot on Inc. Magazine’s prestigious List of Fastest-Growing Private Companies. During that time, Scott was also selected to join the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) – an invite only organization comprised of the world's most successful young entrepreneurs – plus was a semi-finalist for Entrepreneur magazine’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award. 

All these honors are just a small reflection of Scott’s “What’s possible?” attitude that actually came about after being diagnosed with cancer in 2004. Scott now has this insatiable drive, this compulsion to create change. To be change. Everything he pursues must have meaning and purpose beyond the norm.

Scott is also extremely passionate about serving the community: he is the founder of the TH!NK DIFFERENT Foundation and the Fairy Foundation, a board member at CaringBridge and the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation, Marketing Committee Chair for Angel Foundation, and a volunteer mentor with Imerman Angels of Chicago.

Ann O'Connor Sandgren

Dr. Ann O’Connor Sandgren specializes in health psychology focusing on persons affected by cancer and hospitalized patients facing serious illnesses. Previously Ann was a licensed clinical psychologist for Roger Maris Cancer Center at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND and has more than 22 years of clinical experience and psychosocial research. She is also a member of the North Dakota Health Care Review Board and has been a hospice volunteer for over 20 years.

Ann is married and enjoys family time, especially being a grandparent. She’s also an avid traveler. She’s learned from her work that time is precious, to slow down and be more intentional about living the moments well, and to take time for what matters most.

Katherine Tavitian

Kathy Tavitian offers CaringBridge a wealth of experience and leadership in the healthcare industry.

Kathy is a Yale Law School graduate and former CPA. She is also the Interim President and COO of the Consortium for Local Ownership and Use of Data, Inc. (CLOUD), a nonprofit dedicated to restructuring the Internet to enhance privacy and security,

She has also served as the CEO of the California eHealth Collaborative and the National Coalition for Health Integration, both of which encourage the secure exchange of health data to create a more patient-centric, value-based healthcare system.

Currently, Kathy holds the Chief Operating Officer title at edifyHEALTH. Earlier, Kathy was a Senior Executive at Walgreens, where she led several successful entrepreneurial business-to-business initiatives in addition to earlier roles as a Senior Attorney and Senior Real Estate Manager. During her 15-year career at Walgreens, where Kathy was responsible for almost $1 billion in incremental annual revenue, she gained a broad perspective of the pharmacy and healthcare industry. She also built synergistic partnerships across the healthcare industry and led the design and adoption of innovative pharmacy and wellness solutions that enhanced patient-centric care, including programs focusing on increasing care coordination and medication adherence.

Shawn A. Teal

Shawn A. Teal has over 20 years of remarkable executive leadership experience in owning, managing, and building nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Currently, Shawn is employed with the Fairview Health Systems Foundation in Minneapolis, Minnesota as their Vice President of Community Relations and Development which is responsible for all major gift fundraising and community relations programs and planning. Previously, Shawn worked for Forest Hill Capital LLC/Split Rock Financial Group/CVI, UniqueScreen Media Inc, St. Cloud State University and St. John’s University holding leadership positions at each company.

Along with his role at Fairview Health Systems Foundation, Shawn is involved with the Forest Hill Capital LLC Board of Directors, Anderson Entrepreneurial Center Board of Directors, Central MN Community Foundation Board of Trustees and EMR Process Pro Board Member as well as holding numerous other memberships and Board positions in the past. With this amount of experience in participating on varying Boards, Shawn will prove to be a great asset to the CaringBridge Board of Directors.

Jamie Thingelstad

As the Chief Technology Officer at SPS Commerce, the leading retail expert in supply chain strategy, Jamie Thingelstad understands the importance and power of the Internet’s ability to foster connections and help people. Jamie served as Chief Technology Officer for financial publishers including the Wall Street Journal Digital Network, Enterprise Media Group of Dow Jones and MarketWatch, Inc. He was the founding CTO of BigCharts, the leading provider of financial tools and information to consumers and financial services companies via the web. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, two children and their dog.

Jason Van de Loo

Jason Van de Loo brings to CaringBridge over 10 years experience driving innovation and growth in online higher education, and building online consumer brands in other industries. He is currently with Everspring Solutions, an educational consulting firm that partners with leading universities seeking innovating online solutions to enable their visions and missions.

He previously served as senior marketing officer for Capella Education, guiding the firm's international growth strategy, creating a framework for long-term growth, and designing the end-to-end student experience by launching innovative academic programs. Jason also built several successful e-commerce and digital marketing platforms for several Carlson Companies brands including T.G.I. Friday's, Radisson Hotels, and Country Inns & Suites by Carlson.

Jason earned his M.B.A. and B.S. in Business, both with distinction, from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.
