Zephyr’s Story

Site created on June 22, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Father's Day Sunday, June 19th, 2022 Zephyr collapsed while running. He was rushed to the ER where they discovered he had a brain bleed. He was transferred to a hospital 90 minutes away and was diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumor. He will be traveling next week to get care in Boston. We may need to be setting up home in the city for an extended period of time.

Zephyr has been in the United States Coast Guard for over 21 years. He started out as a helicopter rescue swimmer and became an H-60 pilot. He’s known for showing up for everyone around him, when they need him, and now we have the opportunity to show up and support him.

We have started a GoFundMe, if you’d like to help support us with the mounting expenses. Please donate here: https://gofund.me/99c013a0

Newest Update

Journal entry by Zephyr Mays

Things are definitely moving forward... in good ways!

What we know

  1. My last set of MRI’s continue to be clean🎉 YAY! No change in my regimen or treatment plan.
  2. Save the date: I will be retiring from the Coast Guard at a ceremony hosted by the Aviation Logistics Center on Friday, May 31st, 2024 with a reception to follow in the afternoon at the Vine & Board in Duck, NC.
  3. The ceremony will be live streamed on ALC’s Facebook page, if you wish to attend virtually.
  4. We’re preparing the house to go back on the market, as we still very much need to be closer to my medical team in Boston, and for a litany of other practical reasons including transitioning to the VA Medical system.

How to RSVP

It would be very helpful to know if you plan to attend the ceremony and/or reception in-person; we want plan for enough food and beverages for everyone!

To get a semi-accurate head count, your RSVP is appreciated!

  1. Click this link to view the invitation.
  2. If you ONLY plan to attend the ceremony at ALC, please click RSVP and enter the requested information.
  3. If you also plan to attend the reception on the beach, please click RSVP, enter the requested information AND give me a call, shoot me a text, or email me at zephyr.mays(at)gmail.com.

[Edit: there is now an RSVP option to indicate if you intend to come to the reception, but please feel free to reach out as well.]

Note: to those I already know are coming in person, if you do not have an ID that will get you on base, please RSVP so that Base Security can pre-approve a pass for you.

I look forward to celebrating this transition with you!

With love and hope,

Fly and be safe!

Zephyr
