Newest Update

Journal entry by Shelly Silva (Presley)

Wes is 50 days old! The last two weeks have been a bit of a rollercoaster. Early last week, baby boy was not himself. He needed 100% oxygen and was still struggling. They decided to take a blood culture and test his secretions from his breathing tube. In order to do the blood culture, they had to stick an IV in his head because his veins were shot which resulted in his first haircut. Mom was a hot mess and crying as they shaved his little head. Not to worry, they saved it in a baggie for us!

The test results came back that he had bacterial pneumonia and traces of E. coli. Mom naturally spiraled because E. coli was what Wes had when he was born. Luckily, this time it was not in his blood stream so they caught it super early! Because his lungs are still so fragile, we had to give him a round of steroids to boost them up a bit. A round of antibiotics and steroids later, he was able to switch of the jet ventilator and onto a more conventional ventilator which acts as more natural breaths and he has already showed signs of breathing on his own!

Wes is now 1270g and they have started to wean his isolet temperature a bit. Once the isolet gets down to 26 degrees Celsius, they can pop his spaceship top and he can start wearing clothes!

Next hurdle is an eye exam next Tuesday!

Thank you all so much for your support during this trying time, little man is hanging in and just the cutest boy ever!
