My dad peacefully passed with us by his side around 2am this morning. His strength, grit, and trust took him to a better place! William James Eckert III, you were a husband, father, son, brother, cousin, friend and protector to the community! Rest easy and be at peace! We love you!

Not too much change today. No attempt at weaning, his chest xray looks a little worse from yesterday and his temps are fluctuating. Still no movement on left side. His eyes open on command but not sure if he is focusing in on objects. He still reacts with hand squeezes on his right hand as before. They have an IPad to play music for him. Also I asked that they put the Phillies game on so he can listen although that may not be good for his BP or agitation if they are playing like crap! I am trying to focus on Hope but it is the hardest thing to believe in right now! We will stay the course and be my dad's voice and his advocate. Staff has been wonderful and grateful for the Jeff team! Thanks for the support! Let us pray for a thriving Thursday! ♥️

Minor info to report. Labwork stable, off of Insulin gtt and on Sub Q injections of Insulin. Blood pressure controlled. Still on vent with some periods of him breathing on his own with vent support. Hopeful to start a wean attempt soon. He is still weak on left side but again able to follow my commands of thumbs up, hand squeeze, and 2 fingers up which is good! He probably wants to give a different finger sign right about now but I will not ask :). The nurses continue to take great care of him. He is always comfortable and they cleaned up his hair and shaved him so that level of caring for his appearance amidst this critical state is comforting. Weaning from vent is a huge goal and will pretty much dictate his potential for recovery. I told him again about everyone's concern and calls and messages. I also told him the Phillies finally won a game! Until tomorrow!

Well some good news my dad's heart function which is measured by EF% (ejection fraction) is normal. 60% Which blows my mind honestly but good news. His atria are enlarged due to the atrial fibrillation but that is expected. So for those of you wondering, yes my dad has a heart and yes part of it is "big"! Small bursts of humor feed the soul! ♥️

Today was another rough day. Although he spent time breathing on his own with ventilatory support for a while, he needed more vent support with more Oxygen support by the afternoon. He was also placed on an Insulin drip for high blood sugars of 290 due to his critical status. He is back on continuous sedation due to his agitation and was able to respond intermittently but with a little less strength and his left eye a bit sluggish as well. Not sure of the IV sedation is partly the cause of this change. Met with the attending and discussed care goals for the short term. Our biggest hurdle continues to be a successful weaning process from the vent. Although without fever and a with stable white count and continued antibiotic support his chest xray still shows signficant pneumonia which will make the weaning process harder as well as the length of time on the vent, we are at day 6. My mom and sister and I are all in agreement with the goals fo care and thr team at Jefferson has been exceptional in their care and compassion. So alot of the same for now with some twists! I told my dad that we are all ok and he is allowed to be angry, afraid, tired, annoyed,a agitated! I promised him we will be his voice and that we will not let him suffer and told him about everyones calls and comments! Although he would never admit it I know he is smiling inside and that he appreciates the concern that others have for him.  I may have forgotten small details but the nurse daughter line is quite muddy right now!
