Journal entry by Elizabeth Smith Engel

Wednesday was a huge day in the Engel house! Not only was it Will’s 12th birthday (how did he get so big? 😭) but it was the reveal day for Will’s Make-a-Wish!  Will was nominated and approved for a wish last summer. We found out he was going to get a wish during his long hospital stay in June, and waited to tell him about it until about a week before his major lobectomy surgery in August. When we met with Michelle, our wish granter, Will explained that he didn’t just want an experience that would be over in a flash, he wanted something that would last. When Michelle learned more about Will and the challenges he is facing she inquired more about our home and where Will is the happiest and most calm. From that conversation a plan was hatched to turn our second garage (thank you Jeff for sacrificing your parking space) into an arcade! Once the wish was approved the work began. We had to make the garage into a functioning room with heat/ac and electrical. Countless hours and many friends and family chipped in to help make this possible! Mitsubishi, Cole Oglesbee (College Hill Custom Construction), Color by Design, Keith Engel, volunteers from River City Painting, Mr. Handyman of Wichita, ICI Insurance, Greg Smith and many others came together to make this wish possible! I would personally like to give a shout out to Jeff for the countless hours and hard work he put into this room for his son! Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed!
Will’s arcade is super special because it will be in our home for a very long time. It will provide a safe place for Will to go when life seems dark and hard due to his emotional irregularities from having his dominant temporal lobe, amygdala and hippocampus removed. Will is facing some pretty tough days ahead as we reintegrate him into a new school next year. Will didn’t just receive one experience, he received years of fun and serenity for himself and his buddies. He may even share the room with Liv and Maddy 🤪.
This post ALSO marks the six month mark post surgery. Will is physically recovering perfectly! He has had zero seizures since final brain surgery last August! Praise God! We continue to work with amazing teachers, doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists who team up to give Will the best recovery possible! Thank you all for your continued support and prayers! They are much appreciated!
Thank you so much Make-A-Wish for making a not so little boy’s dreams a reality! We will be forever grateful!

Father Kapaun, pray for us!
