Wayne’s Story

Site created on August 1, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.  I experienced pain in my neck around the 10th of July as well as headaches. Those symptoms disappeared  by the 13th of July  as I traveled to Buxton NC to fish and spend time with family and friends.  It was a great few days, the water was clear and I had a blast playing in the water, watching my son and his friends catch fish and spending time with friends.  While there my throat became sore. I thought It may have strep throat. I sought treatment and antibiotics. My throat improved after the first round  but  I felt extremely tired and spent a lot of time in bed.  My neck pain returned.  My wife was out of town so I felt the desire to spend quality time with my son. I took Gavin out to Dinner and a movie.  We saw Spider-Man.  I had to lay down in the  truck prior to the movie.  On Sunday, July 28th after two rounds of antibiotics  and staying in bed two weekend in a row, the wife insisted I go to Riverside ER.  Wow! We thought pneumonia or a stronger antibiotic,  instead they suspected Leukemia.  I was transported to VCU and by Monday, July 29th late afternoon Liz and I received  an Acute Myleoid Leukemia diagnosis.  Please know, I am a blessed man. I trust God in all things. I have wonderful friends and family. I go to an amazing church with gifted pastors and an amazing staff! Best of all, I know God is with Us and we feel his presence.  On Tuesday morning, July 30th I wished my beautiful wife Happy Anniversary, we celebrated our  18 years of marriage in on the second floor in the oncology critical care unit in room 144 and there we began aggressive Chemo Therapy.   I have an excellent team of health care providers at this facility! Each call and message I have received from you I believe is God using you to encourage me. My daughter came in from NY and I have spent some time with her. Please pray! Prayer is what Liz and I need.   I will be at VCU 4 to 6 weeks.  Thank you all so much!!!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Wayne Sorrell

Morning all. Sorry for the delay in updating. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a good start to your New Year. I am doing well. God has blessed Liz and I repeatedly. We are grateful for the continued support and prayers.

Liz and her mother were sick last week with what we suspect was food poisoning, and not a flu or stomach virus. It was pretty viscous. Both met for lunch as Liz needed to get out. Needless to say, we were not sure so it was masks and gloves for us both. She had to sleep in the spare room too. I do not need that due to my very low immune system. Liz and her mother are much better.

Liz has been tough and amazing through it all.She was bleaching the walls, floors, counters, etc even while she was sick. If it was me, I am not getting out of the bed, it would just have to wait. God made woman to be so compassionate, loving and capable even during illness. Liz has been this way since we married and with the kids.

Currently, Liz prepares my meals, handles my meds, cleans, does the laundry, etc. because I am not permitted to do any of that. We have always done chores or household tasks as a team. So I do attempt to cheat a bit wearing gloves and a mask but she is quick to ask "what are you doing?". She has to be around me 24 -7 or her mother and sister in law are the back ups. She is working from the apartment, and we are grateful for the support of her fellow law partners.

Last Wednesday, I had another bone marrow biopsy. We expect results this week and we will post the results. Looking for continued remission. I have another one near day 100 post transplant. This is also an important date because I am scheduled to start going off the immune suppression medicine. The projected date is Feb. 15. This medicine is allowing my body to slowly accept my brother's blood which has taken over..Praise Jesus!

I have labs done only twice a week now and receive any product I need based on the labs. I still have to live 30 minutes from VCU. Look for that to possibly change by late February or early March. It will just depend on my body and blood work. I will still have some restrictions but could come home.

I am not sleeping but maybe 5 hours, and take alot of pills too. I do get fatigued during the day pretty easy but have been exercising or walking for 45 mins to 1 hour when I do. Stairs beat me down. I am down 24 pounds and the loss of weight has been a blessing. Dont recommend the Chemo Fast Diet that gets you there but I am grateful. I am also eating good too.

This morning and for the next 20 days, Liberty is doing praise and prayer. It is online and at each campus. Starts at 0600! Pastor Grant, the Campus Pastors, staff, and Praise Team members are leading the way. It was an awesome morning, a great start to the day, and impacted Liz and I both here in Chester, Virginia. I would encourage you to participate. You will draw close to our Lord and be blessed in return. We know it! Liz and I know the power of prayer as we have been on this difficult journey.

Speaking of Chester, Va. We have an apartment here and can receive visitors. If you are passing through and wish to visit, come on up. Just text Liz or me for the address. Just need a little heads up and for you not to be under the weather. We would love to see you.

I am grateful for the church leadership's continued support, Justin Greene (my supervisor), and the men who have stepped up to assist in my duties as Safety Director and sacraficed much of their time each week. They do this first out of service to our Lord's Church at Liberty, and compassion for me. I am forever grateful. These brothers in Christ are George Anderson, Ken Clark, Hank Snyder, and our Volunteer Campus Safety Team Leaders. God has blessed me.

I want to again thank you all for your continued prayers and support. We have much to be thankful for. Liz and I praise God for each of you.

I also wish to update you on a prior prayer request we had for Todd Filer. He had surgery for colon cancer and had successful surgery and did NOT have to have chemotherapy. He is resting and healing up. So praise God. Have a couple of prayer requests for you too.

Want to ask for prayer for a friend and fellow Liberty Safety Team Member, Alan. Alan has been diagnosed with Prostate cancer and has a procedure scheduled in February.

I have a former brother in blue who has been fighting cancer and has had many challenges. I ask for you to please pray for To . and his wife Cheryl, who is caring for Tom.

Again, THANK YOU FOR the love and support! Will keep you posted. Here are a few pics since being up here post transplant.
