Wayne’s Story

Site created on August 24, 2021

On Monday, August 16, 2021, Wayne left for a work trip. He woke up feeling just a little bit off but not bad enough to cancel his trip. As the day progressed he felt worse. Once he arrived and got to his hotel in Mount Holly, NJ he just went to bed. Tuesday he was much worse but just stayed in his hotel room. Wednesday he woke up very short of breath and on advice from myself and our children he went to urgent care. Because he was short of breath they would not see him and sent him to the ER. Once there they determined he had Covid pneumonia and he was admitted. From there it went down hill and he was moved to ICU just after midnight. Thanks to an ICU nurse, who I wish I had gotten his name, he avoided the ventilator. He tried the bipap and he made it through the night. They have also used some good drugs to fight the pneumonia.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Debbie Hanes

It has been a week since Wayne was discharged from the hospital. He is now completely off of supplemental oxygen. He has been on room air and maintaining O2 sats in the mid 90s. When he exerts himself he does drop but only to 88 at the lowest and re-sats within 15-20 seconds. He is regaining his strength but is still very weak. He has lost a good deal of his muscle mass and quite a bit of weight. We are not sure how much weight but more than he needed to lose, however he is alive. He has worked hard this week using his incentive spirometer and walking every hour. We both now feel comfortable traveling back to Alabama. We will take it very slow, 4-5 days.

We are both praising God for so many things. The peace we have both had throughout this could only have come from Him. We thank all of you that have prayed for us. I cannot tell you how important those prayers are/were. So many stories to share one day.

Please pray for these specific things
1. Wayne to continue to heal and recover.
2. Wayne to stay healthy. His immune system is very weak.
3. Our travels home, safety, stamina for both of us and good traffic.
4. Our car is still in the shop in FL and I would really like to be able to return this rental car once we get home.

"He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength." Isaiah 40:29
