Wayne’s Story

Site created on September 5, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

2018 has not been our greatest year.   We lost Mom in May.  That was devastating, heartbreaking and one of the hardest things I have experienced and am still experiencing.  We all were trying to adjust to a "new normal".  As each day passed through this Summer, we have tried to enjoy each other and all of the time we have got to spend together.

Last week, Dad was complaining of a severe cough, congestion and pain to his chest.  At first, he was diagnosed with pneumonia.  He was hospitalized to receive IV antibiotics and a couple of days later, felt a bit better, and home he went.
This Monday evening, he called me complaining of more severe pain to his left chest and back.  Back to the ER we went...admitted Tuesday morning with suspicious findings on his Chest CT Scan.  This next sentence is one that I thought I would never be typing.
After testing and pathology this morning, Dad has been diagnosed with Stage 4  small cell lung cancer with metastasis to his adrenal glands.

Our family would love your positive thoughts and prayers during this next chapter of our story.  This is what I hope to do with this Caring Bridge page, tell a little bit of Dad's story and give encouragement to him during this journey.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sandy Baumer

This past month was so hard for Dad.  He began to have increased pain due to the cancer spreading to his bones.  These past two weeks he also started to exhibit some signs/symptoms due to the mass on his brain.

This past Friday, we admitted Dad to the in-patient Hospice Unit at St. Elizabeth.  Since Saturday morning, he has been comfortable and essentially out of pain.

Today...at 2:30pm, Dad passed away peacefully.  He will now be forever without pain and that horrible cancer.  He is now with Mom.  He told me last Thursday evening that he did not want her to be alone anymore.  Well...she's not.  I cannot even begin to imagine the excitement, when at 2:30 this afternoon, in Heaven when they saw each other again.  This past Saturday, September 28th, was their 51st Wedding Anniversary.  How amazing that they are wishing each other "Happy Anniversary" right now.

There aren't enough words to tell you how much we will miss him.  He was the most sweetest, caring and loving man.  He loved us fiercely (and his grand-babies twice that!).  We will carry on his legacy every day.

Thank you for being the best Dad and Papaw ever.  Tell Mom we love her and miss her.
