Vonda N. McIntyre died at 6:25 pm, Pacific Time, in no pain and surrounded by friends. The funeral home has collected her body which will be cremated. Vonda was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on February 7; her death came swiftly, just short of two months later. Vonda's posse and local friends will get together for a brief gathering within the next couple days. A reception that is open to the public will be scheduled within about a month and will be announced here on CaringBridge as soon as the details are known. Good-bye, Vonda.

  • Candace Robb : Vonda and I took our first Aikido class together after watching a demo at a writing workshop. She persevered, I didn't. Always regretted that, and that we lost touch. She mentored me through my first experience with an agent, and cheered me on when I finally got published. But best of all, that week of her guidance in the writing workshop instilled in me a little voice--hers, of course--reminding me never to run with the easy idea. Shine on, Starfarer.

  • Maya Bohnhoff : As Sara said, Vonda's spirit is strong. She was a wheel horse at Book View Cafe—a kind, caring, giving person and a dear sister in arms. We miss her so very much. When I flounder in the face of a project I'm not sure I can pull off, I do believe Vonda's spirit will help me keep at it. She is an inspiration.

  • Jane Pinckard : I never got to meet Vonda, but she impacted my life profoundly through her work. I adored her Star Trek novels, which shaped a future that beckoned to me with hope. And her historical fantasy The Moon and the Sun ignited my imagination and inspired me, showing me that was it possible to blend fantasy and history in a seamlessly graceful way. I'll miss her and her voice and her faith in all of us.

She and I had our Picture taken, and had a 15 minute discussion about writing. :) She was a GREAT Writer, and one of my Inspirations to begin writing. :) <3 R.I.P Ms. Vonda... You will be sorely Missed. <3

  • Jon Bastian : I am totally gutted by this, because it happened much sooner than I expected. We were only communicating online a few days ago. I was very fortunate to have met Vonda over 25 years ago, and for her to become a friend and mentor. Sometimes, we're lucky enough to actually meet our idols, then find out that they're good people, and then be blessed with them deciding that we're worth the effort. Too often, we're unfortunate enough to learn that the universe is a random and senseless place -- snatching away the good and talented too early, while often letting the evil live forever. It was a fun ride, Ms. V., and I have many fond memories. In a lot of ways, you were definitely a mother figure when it came to my creativity, and you always accepted me for exactly who I am. Still... too soon, too soon, way way way too soon.

  • Donna Haraway : My condolences to all of Vonda's family and friends. Her writing mattered to me for decades, and then her beaded jellies for the crochet coral reef brought us together personally. May her whimsical and gorgeous beaded critters strengthen Vonda's world in the rich multispecies complexities that sustained her for such a rich and generous life.

  • Kevin Kuenkler : Thank you Vonda for all the wonderful stories you gave us. When we met at Norwescon back in the 80s, I knew I had a great friend. We lost contact till Worldcon in Spokane.. And when we met up again.. It was like yesterday that we saw each other. You will be missed but you will always be with us as you left a mark in each and every one of us who had the pleasure of knowing you. Rest sweet Vonda.

I am glad she had friends around her to ease the passing. I was braced for this. But oh, it feels like someone just blew a candle out and it's dark outside.
