Vernie is home!

Vern has been home from Rehab for a week now and is settling in at her parents, Audelia and Isidro's house. Audelia has been able to take some time off work to be home with Vern and help where needed. Vern is doing most everything on her own now. She gets up and walks where ever she needs to go as long as she puts her helmet on first. She is eating, going to the bathroom and showering all on her own with help close by if she needs it. Her short term memory isn't there yet, so that is our big focus. Vern's family has her day scheduled for her so she is working on therapies and resting in routine to help with her memory. She is seeing physical, occupational and speech therapists 3 days a week. Plus some bonus work her family members are having her do at home. She is at a Rancho score of 6 (see link to understand what this means https://www.neuroskills.com/education-and-resources/rancho-los-amigos-revised/). She went into rehab at a Rancho 4, so she keeps making progress and that's all we can hope for.

Her surgery to put her skull piece back in (it has been preserved in some sort of deep freezer) is June 24th. We have been told it is a simple procedure and she will be back home once the anesthesia clears her system. Once she heals from that she won't have to wear the helmet anymore and her family will be able to rest a little better knowing her brain is protected again.

Vern's surgeon told Carlos that in just these short 2 months her progress has been remarkable. We know Vern is a fighter and with the support of so many family and friends she will keep fighting.

Keep our Vernie in your prayers,
The Hernandez Family
