Vance’s Story

Site created on November 19, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On November 4th Vance went to his Internist because of a 4 day stomach ache.  He thought this was the final symptom of stress flowing through his stomach.  There were other symptoms as well....incessant belching, indigestion, heart burn, and other normal gastro issues with an upset tummy- the pain was the final straw.  He appeared at Dr Johnston's door at 8:00 am on that Monday morning of Nov 4th and said he needed to see the doc and he would wait until he could be worked in.  Little did he know how lucky he was that he followed up on his ailments!   What happened next was a flurry of activity!  CT the next day, first thing in the morning, which led Vance to a phone call from Dr Johnston the very next morning.....first thing!  Dr Johnston wanted Vance to come to his office for a talk, as soon as possible!  Vance immediately went to the office and Dr Johnston gave Vance his scan results, which showed a mass on his pancreas.  Vance was immediately scheduled for a biopsy the next day........which proved without a doubt that he has pancreatic cancer.  This all happened in a matter of days.   In a matter of days our world was turned upside down!!   It is now Wednesday November 20th and we are finally on the eve of the day of meeting with the oncologist.  It has been a very long two weeks with a lot of prayers and intentional thoughts.  Our thoughts have swung high and low as the unknown is sometimes worse than the known.  However, we have been clinging to the biopsy doctors words....the mass is small, localized, and not in the lymph nodes.  Tomorrow will tell us how accurate her words are.  Vance and I have been very encouraged over the last 2 weeks hearing success stories of pancreatic cancer survivors and hearing of the incredible advances in the medical field over the last decade.   We are blessed to have each other, our incredible sons, our fiercely loyal and loving family and multitude of friends who support and love us just as fiercely as our family!

Vance will conquer this.  He is so very brave in the face of this demon.  I am so very proud of him and could only hope if I were faced with the same challenge I could be as strong, calm, and fierce as he!

Tomorrow our war on cancer begins..................and we will CONQUER this nasty monster!!!!
