Journal entry by Sheila Cope

This is the email that Gail sent to a group of us today:

"Frank fell on April 17 in our driveway and broke his hip, he had a partial hip replacement on April 19th.  He developed  double pneumonia after surgery.  He became very weak and was unable to get out of bed to exercise his hip and now it will be a longer time to heal, due to not being able to get up right after the surgery to exercise it. When he arrived at Saint Joseph hospital his blood pressure was only 37 over 50 so they gave him a blood transfusion which helped his blood pressure get back to normal.  He is still in the ICU and he was bleeding and lost so much blood but they did not know where in his body it was coming from at first and then found it was coming from his stomach where there were several blood clots.  They were able to stop the bleeding.  Frank is doing better but very weak and has not been able to move himself or walk.  The doctor said he would have a longer recovery because after the hip surgery he has not been able to get up and walk around, he has not been out of bed, too weak. Frank has not been able to eat since his fall (just a few bites at North Fulton of each meal), nothing to eat at St. Joseph, I am sure he has lost at least 20 lbs. They tired yesterday to feed him but found out he was not swallowing since they removed the breathing tube from his throat.  Frank has been through so much since in the hospital and even fell out of the bed at North Fulton, nurse came in and found him sitting on the floor. All of you have been so caring and I should have gotten out this e-mail sooner but I have been with Frank every day and at night time I am exhausted.  I have not been able to get back to everyone and I know you all want to know what is going on with Frank.  He knows everyone is praying for him and please keep praying for his physical and etc. to return to normal soon.  I will try to send another e-mail out soon.  He is getting better.  Love, Gail"
