Tyler’s Story

Site created on March 7, 2020

Last summer, in 2019, Tyler was diagnosed with a brain tumor on the hypothalamus (mid brain) and it infiltrates into the left lobe. In August he had a brain biopsy; after weeks of analysis and genetic testing we finally had some answers. The tumor was the result of a never before seen gene mutation, is thankfully benign, & graded a level 2 (of 4). Unfortunately it is in a precarious, precious location & therefore inoperable. Only chemotherapy can stabilize or shrink it. If the tumor grows the tiniest bit it can affect a multitude of functions, both neurological & physical. After prayer, a second opinion & much thought, we opted to monitor the tumor through regular evaluations & MRIs (every 3 months unless there is a cause for concern). So, our prayers & hope is that it doesn't grow. I won't lie, the last months have been challenging for all of us - with the diagnosis came other issues, tests, doctors visits & procedures that were a result of the tumor. The range of emotions are incredible, to name a few...scared, blessed, fearful, sad, impatient, but strongest of all love. We're proud of Tyler, he is a loving, intelligent & sweet boy who has been very courageous & strong, handling the physical & emotional challenges like a champ. This unpredictable journey is a big "?", constantly looming & totally out of of our control, so we put it in God's hands & try to be positive. Please keep us in your prayers. On March 10 Ty will undergo his next evaluation. Thank you for all of your love & support!❤️ "Be strong and courageous for the Lord will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

Journal entry by Kathy Bourbon

Hi, I hope this finds everyone happy & healthy. I included a couple of photos from Camp Kanakuk in Branson where Tyler is spending the week; surrounded by unobstructed nature, caring leaders & new friends. We are grateful to every person at Kanakuk - they bring Christ to these kiddos in a fun way. Ty returns rejuvenated in mind, body & soul; it's a beautiful thing. (True to form, he is happy to bring his backpack along to all adventures.)

Regarding his health, Tyler had his 6-month neurological exam & MRI recently. Thank God there were no issues, no growth and no movement. The doctor said after a couple more he will move Tyler to annual checkups. We all look forward to this!

Thank you so much for prayers & well wishes. We have much to be thankful for, including the last year which has tested all of us in so many ways.

Love and our best,
  Kathy & Jerry
