Tristan’s Story

Site created on May 22, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Tuesday, May 21st, Tristan was at a friends house helping him clear some brush. They decided to burn some of it and Tristan was badly burned.  He was flown to Dell Medical in downtown Austin, where he was taken to the operating room to have his burns cleaned and bandaged. They estimate he has 2nd degree burns on 32% of his body.  Tristan has a long road of healing ahead. We are trusting Father as we wade out in these deep waters. Please keep Tristan in your prayers.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Cara Thames

I’ve had so many requests for an update on Tristan the past few days. I realize how poorly I’ve done on communicating to all of you who have been walking this journey with us. I’m sorry! Camp is a whirlwind of activity and Michael and I are doing our best to balance all the areas that need our attention during this busy time.  My mother in law has helped me immensely with my duties at camp this summer!  I absolutely couldn't have done it without her. I know Michael feels the same about all of his camp staff!

Tristan is doing well.   We were told after the accident that it would be “three steps forward and two steps back.”  Right now we are in the “three steps forward” phase and praying for no steps back!  Tristan was cleared by  the Plastic Surgery doctors last week. 🙌🏼 This week the burn team was so pleased with his progress!  They pushed his next visit out further and said they only needed to see him sooner if he had some complications. 🙌🏼🙌🏼  We are still doing daily dressing changes on his legs but are using less bandage materials as he grows more skin.  The more skin he grows the better his circulation will be as well . Tristan is also experiencing far less pain.🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼  He continues to wean down his pain medications. The  biggest hurdle we are facing now is that his new skin is very fragile. If a bandage sticks at all it tears off the new skin he has been working so hard to grow.  That is probably our biggest prayer request right now.  Tristan’s friend Zach came and spent the night and it was great to have him!  It is a blessing to have friends invest in Tristan even while his activities are still limited.  Thanks, Zach!

Brendan is playing 7 on 7 football.  He loves the game and being with his teammates.  A big thank you to Connor and family for getting him to the tournament today so that Michael could work and I could help with camp medications.  I (Cara) was able to go and watch Brendan play today and Michael will get to go tomorrow.   Our kids have all been troopers through this journey by understanding how our time has had to be divided temporarily.

Eden went home with G and is playing with her cousins and planning out how to start a band and become famous. 😜.  It’s big work for a 9 year old !  I couldn’t be more thankful for my mom and how she has helped with my kids since the fire.  It has allowed Michael and I to focus on Tristan while knowing the others were in good hands!

So that is where things are today.  Thank you so much for all of your sweet thoughts, words of encouragement, prayers and acts of service.  You are a blessing to us!
