Newest Update

Journal entry by Bixby Burbach

Hey All –

Shoo, posting this a week later than I had originally intended. Time is a weird thing these days. It’s difficult to describe how it goes so fast and so slow all at once. Someone said to me recently: “The days are long, but the years go fast.” I can’t tell you how much I relate to this. My baby is almost a year old – when in the world did that happen?!

Man alive, folks, when it rains it pours. These past 3 weeks has brought some of the most extraordinary happiness mixed with some of the most frustrating obstacles. More on this below.

First and foremost, thank you so much to you sweet humans out there for wishing us a Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday. It truly meant the world. We had some beautiful, intimate in-home celebrations for both events with our small little family and our wonderful nurses – the only people in addition to our therapists safely allowed in our home at this point in time! To stay safe for the kid, Jason has been working from home since March and only going out to the grocery store. I am only out and about when we’re off to a doctor’s appointment. Haha, the last time I was out of the house before this past Friday evening was July 8th for crying out loud!

Thankfully, there is PLENTY to keep us all busy busy busy within these walls:

  • Tristan is right on the verge of completing several major milestones. It’s one of those things that when one domino falls, the rest will follow soon behind. Stay tuned!
  • Tristan’s Godmother, my best and dearest friend of 21 years, was in town from Wisconsin for a few hours on Friday night. Getting to see this brilliant woman, even for the brief time we were granted socially distancing, really helped to keep me going. She is pure magic and I soaked up every single solitary second I got to spend with her.
  • The local wildfires have really sent us for a loop. I had no idea the true importance of air quality until working with my infant son and properly titrating ventilator settings to overcome his various ailments. Good grief. The poor kid has been pretty gunked up and struggling for about a week now, so we’ve kicked up his ventilator needs into high gear for the time being to bump him past this. I think we’re finally in a manageable place for now.
  • Just for some extra fun, we’ve had an unprecedented amount of medical equipment failure over the past week. It’s led to some pretty late nights/wee early mornings and some pretty worried parents, but we should have everything replaced within the next few days. Trust when I tell you guys it can’t come soon enough.

Some weeks, we’re just left exhausted. The best news is right now, it can only get better from here. We go into these upcoming weeks full of lots of hope in being uplifted moving forward. Stay safe and be well, my Dears!
