It all started with what we thought was a running injury. Trisha was having pain all up and down her left leg. After several months of meeting with orthopedic doctors and other specialists, a MRI in June showed evidence of a mass in her left thigh. A biopsy revealed that the tumor was cancer. Thankfully CT scans of her lungs and abdomen showed no evidence that the cancer had spread!
The diagnosis is a myxoid liposarcoma which the doctor called the best type of sarcoma. Sarcoma is a cancer of the soft tissue. The tumor is 19 inches and is located on the back of Trisha’s thigh. It is right on top of her sciatic nerve which is why she had pain when she was running. It’s a blessing that it was on her nerve because sarcomas usually are not painful and therefore difficult to diagnose.
Treatment was 5 weeks of daily radiation to shrink the tumor. Then a 3 week wait before surgery because skin and tissues were sensitive from radiation.
Surgery is scheduled for the morning of October 10 for 9:45 am. I will provide updates post surgery.
