Journal entry by Lisa Chancellor

Hi all -

After Tonya's brain surgeries a few years ago, Tonya regained her communication and other abilities soon after our return to RIC.  While she has fully recovered physically this time from her surgery in March, she has not recovered her communication skills.

As I've shared, she has aphasia, apraxia, and perseveration.  She also lacks the ability to relate to her body so she doesn't understand if you tell her to get something that is next to her foot, for example.  The good news is that Tonya understands even if she can't communicate  clearly or make her body follow instructions told to her.  She is continuing her outpatient therapy each week so we are hopeful things will progress and improve.  For now she can't stay alone because she can't reliably do things necessary for safety or reaching others.

She wanted to sell her house before this medical event and so we have proceeded with selling it recently.  We are selling things from our houses to get her out of her house before closing and from my house to make room for her.  It would help a lot for you to check out our online auction for anything you may want to get and to share the link with others as much as possible.  There are many new items including mirrors, lamps, and furniture.

After we finish moving her out of her house, she will be staying with me and still spending time with kids.  My hope is that she gains enough independence to be able to live on her own even if she needs to be near family.   Only time will reveal what is possible moving forward.

Thank you for all your support and remembering Tonya even now.

Lisa
