Tom’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On July 28 we took Tom to the ER with a few symptoms of a possible stroke.  He was having trouble doing a few things.  We were sent to Sioux Falls and admitted for observation.  They did an MRI that night at 11:30 and did additional one on Sunday morning with contract and found what they identified  as a glioma blastoma  tumor.   The tumor was integrated into the brain which makes them very difficult to remove.  We were sent on to the Mayo Clinic on Tuesday, July 31st and August 1st where God allowed us to get set up with  the top neurologist and neurosurgeon in the world.   We were told that it takes 2-3 months to get into see these to doctors and their care teams and many get referred to other care teams.  We then began the long wait for the August 14th surgery.  We were supported by many friends and family through prayers, visits, cards, calls and text.

Journal entry by Cindy Steinkamp

Well the abscess ended up growing to the size of a quarter under the skin. If the abscess would have rupture there was and still is a really good chance that they'd have to remove the whole spinal cord stimulator system. The abscess started shrinking bit by bit last Sunday.  I believe this is why I started feeling a little better.  I have had lower amounts of pain on certain days as well.   I'm not out of the woods yet but I'm finally moving in the right direction.  Woo hoo! I went to the surgeon on Thursday and he agreed  with me that he thought the abscess was not quite as ridged and warm.

I cannot even begin to retell all the blessings God has given me through you all during this difficult journey.  God never said we would not have difficulties in life in fact it's quite the opposite in John 16:33 it says that I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” and in James 1:12 it says

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.  Won't that be a wonderful day.

Thank you to all who have stepped forward in so many ways to help Tom and I this pass year.  It just puts a great peace in my heart to know that God got this and that I'm not alone. He is always with me.  He is also using all of you to bring me through this.
