Tom’s Story

Site created on March 2, 2021

Welcome to the CaringBridge website for Tom Sharek. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.  Late on February 28 while recovering from a mild case of Covid, Tom experienced dizziness and slurred speech. Cindy called 911 and Tom was taken by ambulance to the hospital where it was confirmed that he suffered a stroke. His brain showed swelling, and on March 2 the doctors performed a craniectomy to relieve pressure. The doctors say it went well but the family needs to be prepared for a long road of rehabilitation and recovery. As you know the family is currently grieving the loss of Cindy's dad on February 21 as well, and could use all the emotional support of family and friends. Thank you in advance for your support and words of hope and encouragement. This site will be the main source of updates and communication from the family about how Tom's recovery is going.

Dear Friends,,

Today marks one year since Tom suffered his stroke - and what a year it's been!

Tom is now walking with a cane and working with a vestibular physical therapist who has developed specialized exercises to rebuild his brain pathways and lessen his dizziness. I am so proud of him for working so hard and making such incredible improvements.

His doctors are amazed at the progress he has made. They've all commented on how rare it is to see patients who've survived strokes recover as much as he already has.

He's been faithfully doing his exercises and completing his daily walk to rebuild his strength and  has been able to get out and do more of the things he loves, like dining out and going to events like the sportsman show.

The biggest news is that we have decided to sell our home and move into a new place that doesn't require as much maintenance and is more accessible. We will be renting for the next year and hope the market cools down so we can re-enter and find our perfect forever home in 2023. We found a great apartment just 5 minutes from my work and 2 minutes from his doctor that will serve us well during this transition. This will be a big change for us, since we've lived in this home for nearly 27 years! Jordan was only 3 weeks old when we moved in.

As I've mentioned before, we couldn't be more appreciative for the incredible network of friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who have all stepped up to support our family and help us make it through. Thank you all - we love you so much.

Cindy
