Tom’s Story

Site created on December 28, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Tom was diagnosed with amyloidosis. It is a rare blood disease. He has been having chemo treatments once a week for 8 weeks. This was to slow the disease. He is now preparing to get a stem cell transplant. We are not sure of the exact timeframe for the transplant. Will update when we have more information. Thank you all for your prayers and concern.

Journal entry by Tom Haugstad

100 day plus.  Tom had his 100 day testing on Monday 4/6/2020.  We were in and out in 2 hours, which was great.  It was very humbling to see how empty the buildings were.  We had his doctor's appointment by phone today 4/10/2020.  Terrific news!!!!  His numbers were great.  His protein output went down by 2/3.  His kidney is recovering.  His immune system is on track.  She gave us some ideas for increasing his weight and stamina.  Such great news after such a trying beginning to 2020.  He is staying home and we are being extremely careful.  Please everyone stay home, stay safe and have a blessed Easter at home.  This will be our last entry.  We would again especially like to thank my sister, Kate, and friend, Lynn, for their help and support during our time at the Gift of Life House.  We are forever grateful to the Nephrology Team, especially Brandi and AJ, who put together the fundraiser for us.  The response was over whelming and so much appreciated.  Thank you, thank you everyone for your prayers, concerns and support.
