Tim’s Story

Site created on November 5, 2020

In the fall of 2019 after experiencing some issues swallowing, Tim was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer.   Under the care of the team at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, Tim began chemotherapy, radiation, and immunology.  Tim had surgery to remove a segment of his esophagus in March of 2020 with the hope that this would keep the cancer at bay.  Unfortunately, the cancer had other plans and it has metastasized to his liver, pelvis, and shoulder.  It has progressed to Stage 4, and Tim's treatment is now palliative in nature.

Journal entry by Brenna Galvin

Today, we met with one of Dad's doctors from the UW Carbone Cancer Center to discuss his most recent PET scan, CT, and MRI. We also needed help digesting what the scans mean for him and our family moving forward.  The cancer has metastasized to many areas throughout Dad's body. Specifically, his liver, pelvis, and shoulder. The doc informed us that his cancer is aggressive, and there is no longer a course of treatment that can cure him of his disease.  Instead, the focus will need to be on managing his symptoms. They intend to do some radiation on his shoulder, because it is causing Dad a lot of discomfort. Dad will also be referred to hospice.
