Allison’s Story

Site created on February 26, 2020

❤️❤️❤️ Oh, hello there! Nice that you dropped by.  I'm Allison. Your favorite teacher, mother and conga line dancer.  (most definitely written by Luke)
I also recently found out that I have cancer. Breast cancer. Join me as I crush it into oblivion.  ❤️❤️❤️

I know my fight has just begun, but I have never been so in awe of my army. On January 24th, I felt a lump in my breast in the shower.  That turned into an office exam, which quickly became a mammogram, then an ultrasound, biopsy, MRI, pet scan and finally a diagnosis of Metastatic Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (breast cancer in the breast and lymph nodes).  The pet scan showed that it had not spread past my lymph nodes, which most definitely was welcome news.   I have a bilateral mastectomy on March 2nd and will start 6 months of chemo in April followed by radiation.  Since I have been diagnosed, I have been I have been floored by the kindness, love and generosity of my tribe.  I apologize for all the friend's and family that have seen me ugly cry this past month, but it is out of an overwhelming gratitude for you.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone that has made me feel like a cancer warrior princess.  I feel like I can take this on because you are by my side

Newest Update

Journal entry by Allison Trautwein

Oh why, hello there!  Glad you popped by for another installment of my podcast of “Cancer, Covid & Cool Kids". I’m your host Allison and in this week’s episode we will cover a range of topics from unicorns to the current treatment plan.  This is our first official week of summer that culminated in a Teacher Parade through our school neighborhood.  In all the excitement, my copilots Pearl and Olive fell asleep through the entire adventure.  The highlight was one of my adorable soon to be 2nd graders screaming into the car at a deafening level, “Hey, Mrs. Trautwein, are you wearing a wig??” And that about sums up why I love being surrounded by the brutal honesty of 6-8 year olds.  It was an unorthodox end of the year, to say the least, but the kids and families were resilient rock stars. I am looking forward to a serious computer detox though!  My Taxol treatment has been going swimmingly. It has moved to weekly sessions to avoid the side effects of the daily injections. I wrap up this round on July 7th and start the big guns, Adriamycin and Cyclophosphamide (AC) the following week. That lasts for 12 weeks. I am preparing for the much harder days to come, by taking advantage of every good moment now.  We have been taking walks, having picnics, sharpening my mad karaoke skills and getting away to the mountains.  We continue to be in awe of the absolute greatest tribe of supporters.  Signing off for now with lots of love.
