Odin’s Story

Site created on August 6, 2019

Today is one of those days that changes your life. You really don't get it until it's happening to you.

Our 14yo son had difficulty breathing. We thought it was bronchitis again.
They did a chest x-ray.
There was a mass.
They did a CT.
Definitely a mass.
We transferred.
We saw an oncologist.
They kept saying lymphoma.
I finally just asked, "is it really cancer?"
"Yes, we're using the big C word."
I told my son we have to keep saying cancer so we can acknowledge it, to not be afraid of the word. We can be afraid of this journey, but not a word.

It happened in a matter of months. He had a clean chest a few months ago (bronchitis). My son said fuck cancer.
And that's the plan.

Journal entry by Christina Codd

I love insurance. But I hate the proper paperwork.
Let me explain what is going on.
We have Tricare, a wonderful insurance we can have because Marshall was in the military. We pay premiums but it is so low I have no complaints. However, I hate the referral and paperwork we need to actually get the proper care.

Odin needs to receive a specific infusion. It is a very expensive infusion. He gets it about twice a month. The first time, he was in the hospital so it was covered. But this time, our referral paperwork isn't done so everything is considered out of network, AKA, we can be charged a boatload of money.

I don't know why this is so complicated or taking so long as everyone involved has known for awhile. The bills are piling up without this referral. They will back date it, BUT it becomes EXTREMELY difficult when you add in this VERY expensive drug.

So essentially, Odin's care has been postponed once already because of this issue. They are beginning to say it might be again. IT CAN'T BE.

This is why healthcare is so messed up. Because someone in this big web didn't do something correctly, we are now already on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

LET ME BE CLEAR: We are getting it backdated but it is still nerve wrecking that they want to postpone care and there is a possibility it may not be backdated.

WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE! I know I am ranting but really? Get it together!!
