Terry’s Story

Terry passed away on Saturday, October 30th.

On his 70th birthday, April 1, 2021, Terry received life-changing news. He was advised to go immediately to the ER at Marin General Hospital. Over the previous two weeks he had begun experiencing shortness of breath at mild exertion. The medical workup showed 40% lung function, three liters of fluid in the right lung, and small masses in the lungs characteristic of cancer. The lung was partially drained, and subsequent testing indicated this was not lung cancer, but undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma––a very rare type of soft-tissue cancer whose origin in the body is as yet undetermined. He has been referred to specialists at Stanford, and is also pursuing a range of complementary approaches. Since Terry has many friends and belongs to a number of communities, we created this site to keep us all current.

Hi friend,

Like so many of us, you may still be in touch with a sense of tenderness and gratefulness since the recent passing of our beloved Terry Patten, and you may also be embracing the enlivening sense of possibility as we enter a new year (as Terry always did!).

Today, we are writing to enthusiastically and whole-heartedly invite you to a special, live, online event — “Celebrating the Legacy of Terry Patten and Carrying the Torch Forward,” which will be a free, public gathering on Saturday, January 15 at 10:30 AM Pacific (CA). To join us, please register here.

During our gathering next Saturday, we will join together in joyful appreciation and collective inquiry to explore the ever-evolving life’s work of our dear spiritual friend, teacher, wisdom-keeper, and evolutionary brother, Terry Patten. And we will also hear directly from some of Terry’s closest colleagues, including Diane Musho Hamilton, Jeff Salzman, Andrew Harvey, Craig Hamilton, Roger Walsh, Jeremy Lent, Indra Adnan, Emanuel Kuntzelman, Frank Marrero, and others.

At Saturday’s event, we will honor Terry by being with everything at once — the joy and the heartbreak, his legacy and our future. Here are some of the questions we’ll explore together:

• Which of Terry’s unique qualities and contributions can serve us most as we recommit to being of benefit to our hurting world?
• Which “worlds” did Terry’s ever-curious mind and ever-grateful heart open for each of us and for integral, evolutionary culture?
• How has your own practice, work or relationships been enriched by his support?
• Ultimately, how did 50 years of spiritual practice and a lifetime of activism culminate in Terry’s most recent expression as a change agent?
• Many of us witnessed Terry transform his dying into a gift to those he loved. How might each of us further embody and share his life’s work as a gift to all we love?

We hope you’ll mark your calendar for Saturday, January 15 at 10:30 AM Pacific (CA) and register now to join us for this special event.

With joy and ever-grateful hearts,

All of us on Terry’s team at A New Republic of the Heart
