Terry’s Story

Site created on January 23, 2019

From Mickey:

Many of you know that Terry was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis – IPF – just over 5 years ago. This terrible disease is not well understood and Terry has been lucky to be in fairly good health over that time. Recently, he had a sudden, acute exacerbation of his IPF. We first thought it may be related to his heart, but once that was ruled out the doctors thought that there was some kind of lung infection, which is always a risk with IPF patients. They were not able to pinpoint any specific infection, but think that it may have triggered this acute exacerbation of his IPF.

Terry’s condition worsened rather quickly, and he is now in ICU and has been intubated and sedated for the past week. With virtually no improvement during that time with all of the treatments the doctors have tried, we are facing the very real possibility that he may not be able to get off the ventilator.

We will give him a little more time, and are hoping and praying that he will be able to turn the corner. There is nothing to do except wait now – but your prayers would be much appreciated.

From the Family:

While visitors to the ICU will be very limited, please leave a comment for Terry in the "Well wishes" section and we'll read them to him.  https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/terrylovaasupdates/guestbook

Journal entry by Jen Lovaas

From Mickey:

It has been one month since Terry's funeral and I can hardly believe how quickly the time has gone. There is so much to do, but I know things will slow down soon and we'll have to fully face our life without Terry. We miss him so much, but we are comforted by all the kind words, thoughts and memories about Terry that have been shared by family and friends over these past weeks.

We have been overwhelmed by kindness and generosity, including from everyone who came to the visitation and/or funeral; to the many, many lovely cards we've received; to the food people brought to us; to the memories and sentiments expressed on this site. Through the generosity of so many, we were able to make a sizable donation to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Terry. He would have been so proud, and we hope it will help to find a cure for this terrible disease someday soon.

I want to thank everyone for all their love and support through this extremely difficult time, as well as for the support I know we'll continue to receive. Terry left a legacy of love, optimism and sense of fun with all who knew him. We will miss him forever, and we will never forget him!

Thank you,

Mickey, Adam, Jen, Timm, Gail - and the rest of the Lovaas family
